This article discusses briefly a category of New Testament manuscripts with ‘hermeneiai’ before offering a critical edition of P.CtYBR inv. 4641, a Coptic codex leaf containing portions of the text of John that was recently discovered by the present author in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. Unidentified until now, this codex leaf represents the first known example of ahermeneiamanuscript of John written solely in Coptic. As such, the Yale fragment has much significance for discussions about the ἑρμηνεία manuscripts, their origin, influences and functions.

Abstract:
This paper proposes an excerpt of Bartolomeo da San Concordio’s commentary on the Poetria nova (vv. 1-263) on the basis of the two manuscripts that bequeath the work: the Casanatense 311 and the ms. New Haven, Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book Room and Manuscript Library, Osborn fa.6; the first one contains the exegetic text in its entirety, whereas the latter only the initial part. In this paper, the distinctive features of the commentary and the sources used by Bartolomeo are exposed. The potential similarities and relations with other ‘Italian’ coeval commentators of the Poetria nova – especially Guizzardo da Bologna – are examined in order to better define the cultural context in which Goffredo’s work was read and commented between the thirteenth and the fourteenth centuries in Italy.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 analyzes the rise of digitization from the mid-1990s to the mid-2010s through four separate digitization projects, each of which created a new digital manuscript of John Lydgate’s Fall of Princes: Digital Scriptorium and New York, Columbia University, Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Plimpton MS 255; a student-driven digitization of Victoria, University of Victoria, Ms.Eng.1; the British Library’s Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts and London, British Library, Harley MS 1766; and Bibliotheca Philadelphiensis and Philadelphia, the Rosenbach Museum and Library, Rosenbach MS 439/16. Even when digitized manuscripts exist in the atemporality of the internet, each is the product of particular institutional homes, creators, and moments in internet history. Reading these digital book histories together brings into view some of the overlooked ancestors of modern digital manuscripts, showing how these precedents have shaped digital manuscripts and our expectations of them today.

Abstract:
Abstract Three rare and striking illustrations feature women and music in the fifteenth-century Oppenheimer Siddur (Oxford Bodleian Library MS Opp. 776), a dated, user-produced Ashkenazic book of daily prayers completed in 1471. Women playing musical instruments occur rarely in Hebrew manuscript art, and, when they do, it is most often in a specific, archetypical context, such as narrative scenes in Passover Haggadot. Due to rabbinic prohibitions against instrumental music in the synagogue, the inclusion in a Jewish prayer book of women playing musical instruments is enigmatic and invites close study of this unusual aspect of the manuscript’s iconographic program. This chapter examines the symbolism of the feminine elements in these three compositions, examining how they relate to other illustrations in this prayer book, contemporaneous love iconography in Christian secular art of the period, and other medieval Hebrew illuminated manuscripts, as well as Jewish literature.
