Abstract:
This article analyzes the relationship between the Belbin’s team roles and their performance in road design courses. Data were collected from four Civil Engineering groups (undergraduate and postgraduates students) divided into 25 teams. As a result, a consistent relationship was not found between the team balance and its performance in all teams. However, the three most influential roles in performance were identified, but this was only relevant to postgraduate students.

Abstract:
Leadership in start-ups has its specific features, which are connected to a high uncertainty, moving of current boundaries, outstanding adaptability and perseverance of the founder. The main goal of this research paper was to identify the role of founders in successful start-ups. The purpose of this research is to determine whether there are certain common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs- start-up founders. In our analysis, we used the questionnaire- Belbin Full Individual Report. This questionnaire analyses and compares self-evaluation of an examined individual with 360-degree analysis of four members of his team. As a successful start-up we defined a company which fulfilled all of the following conditions: creates a unique scalable product/service, exists on the market 4 to 6 years and is achieving revenues in the amount of the third quartile (Q3) in its industry. To make the analysis comparable, analysed figures are only men. In our research we analysed nine founders and CEOs of start-ups base on a 360-degree evaluation- self-evaluation and evaluation of four members of the team. To view cumulative results, we have used the function boxplot.

Schoenhoff, Peter Klaus. "Belbin's Company Worker, The Self-Perception Inventory, and Their Application to Software Engineering Teams." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36117.

Full text
Abstract:
Software engineering often requires a team arrangement because of the size and scope of modern projects. Several team structures have been defined and used, but these structures generally define only the tasks and jobs required for the team. Various process and product metrics seek to improve quality, even though it is generally agreed that the greatest potential benefit lies in people issues. This study uses a team-based personality profiling tool, the Belbin Self-Perception Inventory, to explore the characteristics offered by the Company Worker, one of the team roles defined by Belbin.

Abstract:
This thesis is written at Örebro University as an ending of the writers’ time at the university. The report examines the problem that temporary project groups does not perform well and has troubles with collaboration. This affects the process of product development projects and can affect the result of the project. This thesis describes how the composition of the project group, with respect to Belbin’s team roles, affects the process of product development projects. The report will also examine if it is possible to find any links between successful product development projects and the composition of the project group. The thesis is based on a literature study that has been combined with interviews at a product development company. By analyzing the data from the interviews and the literature study the writers could see positive effects due to differences in the project groups. By adding a person with the team role Plant to the project group the level of creativity increases, which can improve the result of the project because of better ideas. The writers also found out that if you hold too many strong individuals in a project group it can cause the timeframe and the budget of the project to fail. The strong characters may have problems collaborating, which will create conflicts, causing the project to take longer time than expected.

Gifford, Solomon Stephen. "A Roadmap for a Successful Software Development Team Assembly Model Using Roles." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43109.

Abstract:
Software development requires teams due to size, scope, and location of the project. A few software development team structures have been proposed based on tasks and job descriptions, but no team structure or model has been proposed to assemble software development teams based on individual characteristic and trait differences. This thesis presents two studies that support the argument that a new model needs to be developed for assembling software development teams. A roadmap for developing such a model is presented as the response to the inapplicability of applying current models to software development team assembly.

Van, Heerden Dalina Louise. "The application of Belbin's team role theory in information service enterprises." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/7449.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Inf.
Belbin's team role theory is a popular team building tool. This study aims to establish whether Belbin's theory can be meaningfully applied to an information service enterprise. Belbin's team role theory is explained and its uniqueness, when compared with similar theories such as Margerison and McCann's team role theory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, is highlighted. Belbin's theory is then applied to a team in the Unisa Library to evaluate how the 'end-user', the trainee, views the value of this team role theory. Their views are then evaluated using a research/evaluation questionnaire. The findings are discussed and the conclusion is reached that Belbin's team role theory can be meaningfully applied in an information service enterprise. The feedback of the respondents indicates that they were satisfied with the accuracy and truthfulness of the results and that they were of the opinion that their team roles reflected their personalities rather than their values and culture. For them the main value lies in the renewed self-insight and increased self-confidence gained from the exercise. They also indicated its potential for improved cooperation and problem solving within team context. Furthermore they were confident that the team roles could be used when the reengineering plan is implemented in the Unisa Library. Finally it is recommended that team building needs to form an integral part of the reengineering implementation process. With regard to team development the need to focus on the 'task', 'team', 'individual' and the 'organisational context' is emphasised.

Abstract:
In Software Engineering, personality traits have helped to better understand the human factor. In this chapter, the authors give an overview of important personality traits theories that have influenced Software Engineering and have been widely adopted. The theories considered are Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Big Five Personality Traits, and Belbin Roles. The influence of personality traits has provided remarkable benefits to Software Engineering, especially in the making of teams. For software project managers, it is useful to know what set of soft skills correlates to a specific team role so as to analyze how personality traits have contributed to high performance and cohesive software engineering teams. The study of software engineers’ personality traits also helps to motivate team members. Creating teams that involve compatible individuals, each working on tasks that suit them, and having a motivated team improves team performance, productivity, and reduces project costs.
