This essay analyses the evolution of the Holocaust film genre in Italy through the paradigm of sacrifice, understood both as a process of martyrisation and Christianisation of the Holocaust, and from the point of view of the instrumental use of the figure of the national hero. This chapter connects distinctive animal territories to specific uses of film language through a series of case studies, most notably Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar (1966), Michelangelo Frammartino’s Le Quattro Volte (2011), Bela Tarr’s The Turin Horse (2011), and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (2012). Significantly, becoming-animal cannot be represented by conventional point-of-view and shot-reverse-shot editing (the structural mainstay of filmic suture), because it ties the animal to the conventional (and thus delimiting) human vectorial space of Deleuze’s action-image. In this direction, “becoming-woman,” which is revealed by Deleuze as the first becoming type is quite impressive for feminist theory. Women can enter into becoming-woman by disturbing the dichotomic order with their line of flight instead of acting according to the identities imposed on them. This study is based upon the concept of becoming-woman in the context of Deleuzian feminism tries to approach the issue of “becoming-woman” in the new Turkey cinema based on the film Zephyr (2011) by Belma Baş.

This chapter explores the understanding of “film art” that prevailed at Lenfilm during the last three decades of the Soviet Union’s existence. It was unusual for filmmakers at this period to produce manifestos or detailed discussions of their own artistic practices, but the studio discussions over nearly thirty years allow conclusions to be drawn about overall aesthetic aims. Though the term “socialist realism” was used seriously only by official figures from the film management and Communist Party worlds, filmmakers were deeply concerned with the representation of lived reality, even if they

This chapter examines the characteristics of bad acting, drawing on a range of textual and other evidence to propose a means of understanding subsequent cultification and re-evaluation – or lack thereof. A range of case studies are included, from the cultification of ‘has-beens’ like Bela Lugosi, to bad acting in sexploitation films, as well as critical analysis of performances by director-actors, such as Ed Wood, and cult personalities like Criswell. As the various case studies demonstrate, bad acting reveals the work of acting and therefore has the potential to collapse the boundaries betwee
