Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper proposes a new description of the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia – Kingdom of Italy since 1861 – and the Principality of Serbia during a particularly delicate period of European history regarding the balances of forces in Central and Danubian Europe, at a time in which the diplomacy of Napoleon III’s France dominated Europe. The first part of the work, which deals with the action of the Sardinian consuls in Belgrade from the armistice of Villafranca until the death of the Prince Miloš Obrenović, who returned to the throne after the deposition of the Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević, is structured taking in consideration the most recent historiography (especially Italian and Serbian) devoted to the subject, without forgetting the older but still relevant reference works. The second part follows the contents of the edited Italian diplomatic documents that reveal the existence of a plan of a general uprising against the Habsburgs in the entire Hungary, whose creators were Kossuth and the general Klapka. This insurrection should to involve the action of the Danubian Principalities, Principality of Serbia, ruled by the Prince Michel (Mihailo) Obrenović III, and of the new Kingdom of Italy. Finally, this analysis is followed by a authentic transcription of a few of unpublished documents found in the Central State Archive in Rome, which provide new, remarkably interesting, and useful details about this project and its realization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Read back from the 1990s, the scenario of a Greater Serbian agenda based in Belgrade and using Yugoslavia as a means to that end continues to tempt Western scholarship. Serbian exceptionalism thereby doomed both Yugoslavias. This special issue of East Central Europe addresses connections between Belgrade, Serbia, and Yugoslavia promoting contradictions that belie this simple scenario. Focusing on the first Yugoslavia, these six articles by younger Belgrade historians critically examine a series of disjunctures between the capital city and the rest of Serbia as well as Yugoslavia that undercut the neglected pre-1914 promise of Belgrade’s Yugoslavism. First came the failure of the city’s political and intellectual elite the First World War was ending to persevere with that promise. Most could not separate themselves from a conservative rather than nationalist reliance on the Serbian-led ministries in Belgrade to deal with the problems of governing a new state that now included many non-Serbs. From Serbian political divisions and a growing parliamentary paralysis to the Belgrade ministries’ failure to support the Serb colonists in Kosovo, problems mounted. They opened the way for King Aleksandar’s dictatorship in 1929, with initial Serbian support. But as the royal regime imposed an integral Yugoslavism on what had been the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and punished disloyalty to the Crown in particular Serbs were punished as well as non-Serbs. Their locally organized associations were also placed under royal authority, whose ministries were however no more successful in uniform administration than their predecessors. At the same time, however, Belgrade’s growing connections to European popular culture skipped over the rest of the country, Serbia included, to establish a distinctive urban identity. After the Second World War, what was now a Western identity would grow and spread from Belgrade after the Tito-Stalin split, despite reservations and resistance from the Communist regime. This cultural connection now promoted the wider Yugoslav integration that was missing in the interwar period. It still failed, as amply demonstrated in Western and Serbian scholarship, to overcome the political contradictions that burdened both Yugoslavias.

Abstract:
??a<?o?e\?\? cAATjvuoj? (p. 1-300) ??? ?ndvrrioi? sic avr?v vn? ?e?a??. N. ???&?a??] (?. 301-860). .

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Splitting of Yugoslavia, reforms of the social and economic systems, context of the transition from a bipolar to a multipolar world, at the beginning of the 1990’s, Serbia faces an economical, moral and institutional crisis. With the end of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, that’s the Yugoslavian identity which disappears. The Serbian intellectuals have then to tackle the task to (re)define the Serbian identity. Two ways emerge: the one of the nationalist intellectuals who promote a traditional vision and another one we could call “liberal” turned towards modernization. But, in these two models, it’s the same pattern which is applied: a bipolar analysis of the Serbian society which leads to think two opposite Serbian identities, opposed and irreconcilable. The thesis searches first the causes that may explain the birth and the impact of such a black and white speech, always more widespread in a world in the middle of an identity crisis. If the bipolar outlook is not a prerogative of Serbia, this duality is here quite original. As the anthropologist Slobodan Naumović writes it: «The “Autochthonous”, “Authentic”, “Historical”, “Patriotic” and “National”, but at times also“Heavenly” and “Orthodox” Serbia was confronted by the “Anti-Nationalist”, “Pacifist”, “Modern”, “European”, “Cosmopolitan”, “Civil”, and “Liberal” Serbia». The opposition becomes strong enough to generate an almost ethnic entity known as “Druga Srbija” that we may translate by “Other” or “Second” Serbia. Committed in the fight against Milošević in the 90’s, the “Druga Srbija” had to redefine its project after his fall in October 2000. In a society it judges archaic and unfit to change, the “Druga Srbija” claims itself as the only chance for Serbia ̶ plunged in the economic crisis, blocked at the doors of European Union ̶ to access modernity

Abstract:
On river Danube in Belgrade, Serbia, abandoned coal power plant Power and Light and the surrounding historical industrial zone have been laying in shadows for decades, waiting to be reconnected to the city life.  This project deals with the revitalization of the old power plant giving it a new function – a school of architecture. As the use for which the building was build is so vastly different from the function of a school, one of the main points dealt with in the proposal is reconciling the existing structure and the new program. This challenge is addressed through working with the building, rather than against is - recognizing existing spatial qualities and seeing how they can be utilized in the new program.  Alongside developing the program for the building itself, the project gives a schematic proposal for future development of the industrial zone as a campus for the city’s growing university.

Abstract:
The project “Six weeks in Belgrade” is a comic book and an exhibition of our research on citizen participation in the planning process in Belgrade, Serbia.   The project discusses how participation can be used to improve the way we plan and build our cities: If, and how, participation can result in a more democratic planning, aiming at a more long-term sustainable and less market-driven urban development. It presents current planning conditions in Belgrade, and current actors and projects in Belgrade. It also introduces a speculative method for a participatory practice through fiction and the visual language of comics. The project maps both formal and informal initiatives in the field of urban planning. The research was done on the basis of interviews, books and articles. By mapping these initiatives we wanted to show their importance, hoping that people will get inspired and involved in the planning and making of the city, and also to strengthen already existing initiatives. The research is presented in the form of a comic narrative, presenting an alternative mode of communicating ideas in architecture and planning. Something which is of specific importance for the development of a participatory practice.

Abstract:
Belgrade is a growing European university city, today the largest in the Balkans. Up to 140,000 students share a total of 12,000 state-owned student homes. This growing trend will continue as the city and the country generally see economic growth greater than inprevious years. In an effort to respond to student housing shortages, I contribute with a proposal how to efficiently build for both students and the city. The site is centrally located at Bulevar kralja Aleksandra, which is Belgrade’s equivalent to Sveavägen. Until the fire in 2014 there was an indoor market on the site of what was previously a garage and turning point for the trams that go along the boulevard.

Abstract:
The thesis discusses the remembrance of the Ottoman heritage and presentation of Ottoman culture at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade. The study emphasizes the role and importance of memory and historical interpretation in the contemporary museum practice at the museum. The historical memories of a collection of 6 curators will be discussed and represented in order to examine the influence these recollections have on the exhibition of culture in the museum. The thesis gives the reader a further understanding of the mechanisms behind the continuous neglect and lack of appreciation of the Ottoman heritage in the Serbian society. In line with the current research within memory studies, this study focus on a museum as a site of memory, or a "lieux de mémoire" in Pierre Nora's term. The author concludes that there is a lack of awareness and emphasis in the museum on the Ottoman heritage. She also argues that the museum as a site of memory does little to provide for an arena where memories of different cultures and identities are channeled and presented in the society. Further studies should also emphasize museum presentations in other Southeast European countries in order to discuss the ways in which folk culture, cultural history and memory are presented to the public.

Abstract:
This study is about seven women’s organizations in Belgrade, Serbia and their relations to domestic and international donors during the period 2003-2006. My main research questions focus on their choices of either domestic or international cooperation partners. How and why did the women organize themselves? What factors were essential when selecting donors? In what ways were the organizations influenced by donors? Through interviews, with organization representatives’ concepts such as gift and reciprocity, power and dependency, trust and mistrust and collective identity emerged.  These concepts were used as points of departure for developing deeper understanding of women organizations’ choice of cooperation partners. The women organizations’ basically had two alternatives for cooperation: cooperation with foreign donors which offered funds, organizational development and social networks. Alternately, cooperation with local donors, which offered the equivalent except for the organizational development. Cooperation with the foreign donor has resulted in more professional attitudes to the work that have been desired by other international donors. A result is that they can compete with other women’s organizations’ for international funding. Cooperation with local donors has led to fewer resources but more independent working practices. For these women organizations’ independence was important so they choose partners who, they felt more respected this allowing them to write articles or discuss gender in the media with little external influence. Regardless of the chosen donor the reciprocity is embedded in the relation between the donor and the receiver of aid, which in various ways is beneficial for both parties.

Abstract:
Abstract: The paper examines correlations of architectural culture in Serbia with modern ideas of the twentieth century that were engendered through engagement with concepts originated by Le Corbusier. Based on analysis of primary sources, the paper examines the dichotomy vernacular – modern as a critical point of this correlation. For instance, what was the significance of vernacular or folklore heritage, that Charles-Édouard Jeanneret traced in Serbia in 1911, and how did its value became part of the foundational discourse of the modern movement? What kind of relation to Le Corbusier’s doctrines were forged by modern architects in Serbia of the interwar years, and which lessons learned in his Parisian atelier by collaborators from the late 1930s had been transmitted far and wide in socialist Yugoslavia’s urban planning? This paper focuses on comparative analysis of direct material evidence of sources on the one side and interpretations on the other, with the aim to show more clearly a two-way working of sources, reception and selective transmission through architectural thinking and design process. In sum, the argumentation will aim to elucidate the processes of acknowledgment, emulation, idealization, analytical probing, dogmatization, critique and annihilation of Le Corbusier’s ideas in the long march of modernism’s emancipation and decline in Serbia over the course of the twentieth century. Abstract:
The widespread use of artificial sweeteners as additives in food, beverages, medicines and oral care products has led to the accumulation of these substances in aquatic ecosystems around the world. Since most of them are metabolically inert and are incompletely eliminated in wastewater treatment plants, municipal wastewater is the main source of these compounds in the environment. Due to the limited knowledge of their environmental fate and ecotoxicity, artificial sweeteeners are recognized as high-priority emerging contaminants. Some of them, such as acesulfame and sucralose, are very persistent in the aquatic environment, so they can be used as chemical markers of municipal wastewater pollution. In this paper, the presence of the most commonly used sweeteners in the Republic of Serbia (acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate, sucralose and aspartame) was investigated in groundwater from two Belgrade Ranney wells, as well as in the Sava River, in order to assess the impact of untreated municipal wastewater on water sources, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry.ers as additives in food, beverages, medicines and oral care products has led to the accumulation of these substances in aquatic ecosystems around the world. Abstract:
The demand for nature and ecotourism has been constantly rising last forty years and it will continue to grow. Due to the coronavirus, domestic tourism will increase exponentially, which would enhance ecotourism development. Foreigners and local tourists have become more aware to leave a positive impact on the environment where they travel and where they live. Serbia and Slovakia have a great potential to become attractive ecotourism destinations. Both countries are countries with a similar population number, no access to the sea, but with preserved nature, great gastronomic offer, and the main potential next to the capitals of Bratislava and Belgrade lies in ecotourism. At the same time, domestic ecotourism is a perfect economic activity that promotes sustainability and development. In the less developed regions, ecotourism can bring new employment opportunities and increase demand for local products. Agrotourism and rural tourism are inevitable part of sustainable development in Slovakia and Serbia. Despite of small territories of Slovakia and Serbia, both countries can offer a wide range of sceneries and natural beauties to be explored. This article aims to analyze the potential of ecotourism in the Slovak Republic and Serbia. To achieve the objective results, we’ve surveyed the foreign and local respondents. Our study also analyzes whether marketing strategies and promotion of domestic ecotourism is effective to attract tourists. The obtained results will be evaluated and compared. In the last part, the paper focuses on eco labels that currently exist in Serbia and Slovakia.

Abstract:
In the second decade of the 21st century, there is an ongoing discussion on the value of online classes in higher education as the implementation of new technologies in the higher education processes is on the rise. The main questions that are emerging are the level of interactions, quality of knowledge transfer, and development of critical thinking. Several previously conducted research concluded that online models of higher education teaching add more value than traditional methods, and some of the research has shown the shortcomings of online higher education programs. The pandemic of Covid-19 disease caused by a Corona Virus (SARS-CoV-2) has forced most of the higher education institutions in Europe to transfer almost the entire educational process to online platforms. In this paper, the satisfaction of the teachers and the students with the online classes’ effectiveness regarding the teacher-student communication, knowledge transfer, and development of critical thinking in the case of the School of Engineering Management in Belgrade, Serbia, is researched through a short survey and interviews. Statistical analysis has shown that there is a statistically significant difference between students' and teachers' satisfaction. Furthermore, in short interviews, it is shown that the students are more receptive to knowledge transfer, teacher-student communication, and the development of critical thinking through online classes than the professors. As the sample is small, further empirical research on the wider sample is needed in order to get more compelling conclusions.
