ABSTRACTWe investigate the production of relative clauses in Italian children aged 3 years, 4 months to 8 years, 10 months and in adults, focusing on object relatives (ORs). For both adults and older children, we test the production of passive ORs (PORs) as an alternative to the production of active ORs. We also test the comprehension of active ORs and PORs in older children, showing that the comprehension of the latter is significantly more accurate than the former. The persistent difficulty that children experience with ORs is interpreted as due to intervention, following Friedmann, Belletti

ABSTRACTIn two sentence repetition experiments, we investigated whether four- and five-year-olds master distinct representations for intransitive verb classes by testing two syntactic analyses of unaccusatives (Burzio, 1986; Belletti, 1988). Under the assumption that, with unaccusatives, the partitive case of the postverbal argument is realized only on indefinites (Belletti, 1988), we tested whether children used indefiniteness as a feature to assign the partitive case to the verb's argument. In the sentences, we manipulated whether the subject preceded or followed the (unaccusative or unergat

Abstract:
Basic sentences in Maōri have VSO constituent ordering, but the nominative argument can precede the verb in constructions that have sentence-initial Topics, Focused constituents, or negatives. In the constructions with pre-verbal nominatives there are restrictions on the tense-denoting particles that may be present. This chapter proposes that, except in the case of subject Topics, when a nominative expression precedes the verb of which it is an argument, it has raised to Spec, Fin/T within a CP domain where it is c-commanded by higher Tense. The structural analysis is developed in the terms of a cartographic approach, drawing in particular on proposals of Belletti (2015) as to reduced forms of cleft CPs and separating out distinctions in the locations of splits and hybrids involving Force and Finiteness in the left periphery.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the characteristics of a vision for a region, organization, or group are discussed, and then attention turns to examining the roles of forecasting and backcasting, and scenarios to anticipate the future. Subsequently, the characteristics of both sustainable development and resilience as possible visions to guide resource and environmental management are examined. In the context of sustainable development, the distinction between weak and strong sustainability is reviewed. Next, attention turns to the implications of the Anthropocene for achieving sustainable development and resilience. The concept of the rule of hand is explored, which suggests that normally not more than three to five variables are significant when trying to understand complex social-ecological systems, followed by consideration of how both adaptation and transformation can become strategies to address complexity and uncertainty. Kathryn Bellette provides a guest statement focused on implementing a strategy for sustainable development in metropolitan Adelaide, Australia.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this essay is to propose a unified analysis of a range of “secondposition” phenomena that have been attested in various languages, and in so doing to motivate a more elaborated theory of Nominative Case assignment. The proposal is that many languages, including a number of Germanic and Romance languages, have a projection that intervenes between Comp and the highest Infl-type projection (which, following Belletti 1990, we take to be AgrP). We refer to this projection as AgrlP, and we refer to the lower, “traditional” AgrP as Agr2P. Thus our claim is that in the languages in question there are two Agr-heads and two projections of Agr. These two Agrs are both “subject” Agrs; in this respect, our proposal is distinct from but not exclusive with Chomsky’s (1989) idea that, in addition to the standard “sub¬ject” Agr, there is also an “object” Agr.

Abstract:
Abstract According to most analyses, (Rizzi 1982, 1990; Burzio 1986; Belletti 1990, among many others) the preverbal subject in (2a) has been A-moved to Spec, IP. It has been often noted (Brito and Duarte 1983; Brito 1984; Ambar 1988; Calabrese 1990; Saccon 1993; Pinto 1994, among many others) that the preverbal subject in (2a) has different discourse properties from the postverbal subject in (2b): preverbal subjects are topics, whereas postverbal subjects are foci. Based on this observation, Saccon (1993), Pinto (1994), Adger (1996), Grimshaw and Samek-Lodovici (1994), and Costa (1996) proposed that overt movement to Spec, IP in the NSLs is triggered by some “topic” feature. Under this approach, the NSLs differ from the non-NSLs in the possibility of leaving foci subjects in situ, but, from a strictly configurational point of view, subject initial constructions in the NSLs do not differ substantially from subject initial constructions in the non-NSLs: in both cases the subject is raised to Spec, IP, an A-position.

Abstract:
Abstract In the modular framework of generative grammar, passive is reduced to the interaction of various principles involving Case theory, movement, and Theta theory (Chomsky 1981). Movement of the object to subject position is dependent on the thematic vacuousness of this subject position, which in turn is obtained by the “absorption” of the external thematic role by the passive morphology transmit¬ ting this thematic role to the by-phrase (Jaeggli 1986; Baker, Johnson, and Roberts 1989). Movement is triggered as aconsequence of Burzio’s (1986) generalization: a verb without an external Theta-role has no accusative Case to assign. Since no accusative Case is available for the object NP in the postverbal position (or in Spec AgrOP, in the minimalist framework), the object NP moves to subject position, where nominative Case is available. If the object stays in object position, it can only do so if provided with inherent partitive Case, yielding impersonal passives (le) with necessarily indefinite (partitive) NPs in object position (Belletti 1988).

Abstract:
Abstract The main empirical area studied in this chapter concerns Inversion structures with a subject that linearly follows the inflected verb, displaying the word order VS. Seemingly unrelated structures that involve reordering of complements (in the sense of Belletti & Shlonsky 1995; henceforth B&S) are also considered and are assumed to involve the same derivational process at work in Subject Inversion. Both are argued to be instances of clause-internal Focalization.1 The term “Subject Inversion” is thus a purely descriptive label, referring to a subset, albeit an important one, of a more general clause-internal process. The descriptive term “Inversion,” with reference to Subject Inversion structures, implicitly capitalizes on the idea that the order VS reverses the canonical order SV(O). However, that Subject Inversion configurations cannot be derived through a lowering operation, moving the preverbal “high” subject to some clauseinternal position, has been assumed ever since Romance Subject Inversion phenomena have undergone serious examinations in Government and Binding (GB) terms.

Abstract:
Abstract This volume presents the first results of a long-term research project aiming at the discovery and mapping out of the functional structure of natural language sentences. The impetus of the study of functional structure, after Chomsky (1986, 3) first suggested extending the X-bar format to the nonlexical categories of Inflection and Complementizer, can be traced back to some fifteen years ago, with Abney (1987) for the DP, and Pollock (1989) for the sentence, with subsequent modifications by Belletti (1990), Ouhalla (1991), and Chomsky (1993), among others. Since then, the amount of work produced in the study of functional structure on a variety of languages, has grown to such an extent that a systematic mapping of the various functional heads found in the sentence and other phrases of the languages of the world has become appropriate, if not imperative. The idea is that we are at a point when it is finally possible to set the question in a systematic and empirical fashion, by having the various types of evidence considered in the literature interact and converge onto distinct functional hierarchies for each phrase.
