Abstract:
The aims of the article is to discuss the losses sustained by the Diocese of Kielce in relation to the sacral bells during the Second World War. This issue was not so far discussed in detail in historical literature. On the basis of available sources (materials stored in the Archive of the Diocese in Kielce) it should be noted, that during the last war the diocese of Kielce lost more than 160 church bells because of the German military requisition and at least a few as a result of the warfare. The highest intensity of the action of confiscation bells by the Nazis were recorded in 1941–1942, after that time it took place only very occasionally. Among the confiscated bells were 43 antique ones, cast before 1900. The most historical bells, as many as five, lost the Parish of Gnojno. The oldest bell, looted by the Germans from the Church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Książ Mały, was cast in 1500. The most of the bells made before 1900 was the work of unknown artists. Only a few of them bear the signature of the craftsman. Bells funded in the interwar period came mostly from the three Polish foundries, that is factories of Felczyński Brothers in Kalush (Kałusz) and Przemyśl, workshop of Karl Gustav Schwabe in Biała near Bielsko and the „Bells Foundry Francis Lott, Michael Dziarski and Company” („Odlewnia Dzwonów Franciszek Lott, Michał Dziarski i Spółka”), located in Pustelnik near Warsaw.

Abstract:
While it may seem that "The Cap and Bells" finds its primary source in Yeats's love for Maud Gonne, the poem is also symbolic of his search for truth in occultism. In the 1880s and 90s Yeats coupled his reading of Shelley with a formal study of magic in the Golden Dawn, and the poem is a blend of Shelleyan and occult influences. The essay explores the Shelleyan/occult motif of death and rebirth through examining the poem's relation to the rituals, teachings, and symbols of the Golden Dawn. The essay examines the poem's relation to the Cabalistic Tree of Life, the Hanged Man of the Tarot, two Golden Dawn diagrams on the Garden of Eden, and the concept of Kundalini.

Abstract:
The salons were considered important sociability places, where relationships and alliances were settled and marriages arranged since the 18th century. The social article, in its turn, lead the representation of this sociability to the newspapers pages, turning them into a space of recognition for the high society, describing the fashion, the public, the events and the very worldliness ambiance. Through the comparative analysis of the texts by Marcel Proust and João do Rio, the present research intends to investigate this genre of great preeminence in newspapers and magazines form the Belle Époque in France and Brazil. In order to do so, we provide, in the first place, a historical and cultural context of the high society, the salons and the press from both countries. Then, we will exploit the journalistic and literary traits in the social articles. How did the writers take advantage of the printed media protocols? How fictional traits were inserted in these sections of the newspapers and why? How did João do Rio write salon articles in a country whose population was predominantly illiterate? Those were a few of the questions raised. Through systematic readings and analysis of text and genre on the newspapers Le Figaro and Le Gaulois regarding Proust, and O Paiz in the case of João do Rio, we were able to infer that the society pieces were made from a tension between the attempt to represent the Carioca and Parisian high societies salons splendor and the need to supply the demands of the media. We can state that both authors understand the genre and make good use of its rules and literary traits. Marcel Proust and João do Rio, despite being inserted in such different contexts, describe the salons rituals whose liturgy is know and acknowledged by its readers and yet place them into this universe, at the same time real and imagined, between economy and politics columns.

Ephemeris ganha importância no tocante à conservação do mito troiano, pois no Ocidente latino, desde o século I a.
Abstract: In this work, we study and translate integrally a late Latin work known as Ephemeris belli Troiani (Diary of the War of Troy ), anonymous and dating from the fourth century AD. Ephemeris reports the events of the Trojan War from the viewpoint of a first person narrator who presents himself as a Cretan soldier named Díctis, enlisted in the troop of the Greek com mander Idomeneu. The account of the battle between Greeks and Trojans, known in literature primarily by the reading of the Homer's Iliad, is dressed in Ephemeris of a rationalistic intention by diminishing the heroes to the regular human condition, by decr easing the performance of the gods and structuring the narrative logically and chronologically. Composed of six chapters, preceded by an epistle and a prologue, the work is a Latin version of a text of second century, written originally in Greek, which is now fragmented. Ephemeris gains importance with regard to the conservation of the Trojan myth. In the Latin West, since the first century BC, the story of Trojan War was less known through Homeric poems and Greek literature in general because of a precario usness in diffusion of the Greek language among the Roman elite. Add to this factor the later and growing pressure of the Church that rejected the polytheistic gods who inhabited the Homeric narrative. In this way other works composed in Latin assumed the transmission of the Trojan story that offered the Homeric epic. Of particular note is Ephemeris, which ...

Full text
Abstract:
Belly Laughs: Body Humor in Contemporary American Literature and Film Scholars are more than happy to laugh at but seem somewhat reluctant to discuss body humor, which is perhaps the most neglected form of comedy in recent criticism. In this dissertation, I examine the ways in which contemporary American writers and filmmakers use body humor in their works, not only in moments of so-called "comic relief" but also as a valid way of exploring many of the same issues that postmodern artists typically interrogate in their more somber moments. The writers discussed in this project-Philip Roth, Thomas Pynchon, Charles Johnson, and Woody Allen-were chosen for the divergent ways in which they present the body's comic predicament in psychological, metaphysical, and historical situations. The introduction explains the diverse traditions that these artists draw upon and considers how various theoretical approaches can affect our understanding of body humor. The first chapter examines Jewish-American novelist Philip Roth's use of absurd and grotesque body imagery as manifestations of his characters' moral dilemmas. The second chapter looks at how slapstick comedy informs a worldview dominated by paranioa and chaos in Thomas Pynchon's novels. Chapter Three looks at Woody Allen's early films, in which he parodies and revises the slapstick cinematic tradition of artists like Charlie Chaplin and The Marx Brothers. Chapter Four considers African-American writer and cartoonist Charles Johnson's depiction of the ways in which the body's desires and pitfalls complicate the quest for spiritual enlightenment.

Analysing some familiar essays (crônicas) published in newspaper columns by João do Rio and Olavo Bilac, we developed a study aiming at tracing a parallel between the production of the two writers regarding the modernization of the city of Rio de Janeiro on the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The research has been based on readings that offer theoretical subside to understand the essays within the historical and social context of the city and of the press at that moment, trying to get to some conclusions about its contribution to the construction of the carioca modernity. The work consists, in essence, on the enchainment of the theoretical readings together with the literary/journalistic texts, in order to offer a vivid sample of the similarities and the differences between the two writers, considered as paradigmatic figures of the tropical Belle Époque

Full text
Abstract:
Model experiments in this paper explains the response of the moonpool encountered through waves at different wave heights, time periods and attack angles, which reflect close to real situation at sea for ships equipped with moonpool. EMD method is used to have a meaningful data collected through hydrophone, pressure sensors, acceleration sensor and wave height meter. Results show that fluid natural oscillating frequency remains constant at 0.7 Hz in calm water with forward model speed condition (Fr = 0.26∼1.3), while by increasing the time period, wave height or both; it fluctuates between 0.6 Hz∼0.9 Hz. The fluid inside the moonpool faces internal sloshing, resulting in transverse breaking waves that are added to the vertical motions. Sloshing motion in the moonpool couples with the piston mode due to which results of calm water with forward speed, and combined waves and flow condition are quite different. Square shaped moonpool at different attack angles and circular shaped moonpool are also discussed for fluctuating pressure level (dB) at increasing time period and wave height. Moreover, Oscillation pressure results at only-wave condition and wave and flow condition together are represented by using frequency ratio between ‘oscillation pressure frequency’ and ‘sloshing natural frequency’ with varying ‘KC’ number. KC varies from 4.16 to 5.67 at 1-sec time period having frequency ratio f/fo of 1. Once time period increases to 2-sec, KC becomes around 22.69 at same frequency ratio. Dynamic magnification due to waves and flow combined situation may cause slamming on diving bells or ROV that are launched, green water over the edge of the moonpool which can be dangerous for the crew, or can increase drastically the resistance of the vessel in transit conditions therefore, this experimental research gives very important factors and results for designing moonpool; we believe that this paper has a significant contribution in the permanent literature.

Abstract:
The paper analyzes Sasamegoto (Whispered Conversations, 1463–1464), a treatise by Shinkei, the influential Buddhist poet and thinker of the Muromachi period (1392–1568). In this treatise on the collaborative poetry of “linked verse” (renga), the author addresses the category of the “Way” (michi) or the “Way of Poetry” (uta-no michi), which he interprets on the basis of ancient Chinese philosophers (Confucius and Lao Tze) and early Japanese authors of Zen school (e. g., Mujū Ichien, who wrote the Shasekishū — The Collection of Sand and Rocks, 13th century) and even endows it with a new meaning. In Shinkei’s view, the Way is not only mastery and its perfection. This is a sum total of many diverse things: the entire corpus of belles-lettres, theoretical treatises, schools, teachers and disciples, ideal poets, trends, styles, inner discipline, lifestyles, the past and the present.

Gerbert, Göran. "Driven Pulley Jumping of Timing Belts." In ASME 1992 Design Technical Conferences. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc1992-0063.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A model and criterium for the jumping limit torque of timing belt drives are presented. The following parameters are considered: pulley geometry, belt geometry, belt strain stiffness, belt tooth stiffness, belt flexural rigidity, shaft stiffness and initial tension. Friction is important in separating jumping on driver and driven pulleys since the jumping behaviour is different at the two sides. Other parameters might influence the jumping limit torque as well. Moreover, great care must be taken to get good parameter data from the test setup. The present analysis is restricted to driven pulleys. Calculated results of jumping limit torque and shaft load are presented for an XL-belt drive. The results exhibit the same behaviour as test results presented in the literature.

Abstract:
Abstract Analysis of power transmission in a belt drive consisting of e. g. two pulleys might be treated as a boundary value problem. Tight side tension FT, slack side tension FS and the wrap angle α are the three natural boundary conditions. In the literature, theories are developed where seating and unseating as well as the power transmitting part of the contact are considered. The solutions presented so far don’t fulfil the boundary conditions properly, since a certain tension ratio FT/FS is associated with a certain contact angle and not an a priori specified one. It appears that a new type of full sliding solution must be introduced to handle the boundary condition problem. During part of the contact there is almost no tension variation in spite of the full sliding conditions. The designation adhesive like solution is here introduced for that part. Conditions and character of the adhesive like solution are outlined in the paper.

"Numerical Investigation of the Interaction of a Circumferential Groove Casing Treatment and Near-Tip Modifications for a Highly-Loaded Low-Speed Rotor Under the Influence of Double Leakage." In ASME Turbo Expo 2023: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2023-101545.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In [1], Eckel et al. proposed using a convex-profiled pressure side region close to the tip, known as belly, as an effective method of extending the operating range of low-speed axial compressor rotors. In the literature, circumferential grooves are another well-described technique for improving the stable working range of a compressor rotor. No research has been conducted to date to determine which modification is more effective and how they interact when used together. This paper numerically investigates the influence of circumferential casing grooves and near tip modifications on the flow field in the tip region of a highly-loaded, low-speed axial compressor rotor. The simulated rotor consists of a hybrid blade configuration with a tandem profile in the mid-span region and single blade profiles near the endwalls. The single blade profile close to the tip features three different convex-profiled elements, which differ in their respective thicknesses. The aim of the numerical analysis is to explain the interaction of the secondary flow phenomena when applying the circumferential grooves and the belly geometries. For this purpose, eight different axial positions of the circumferential groove are investigated for each of the three belly configurations. These are arranged in 10 % increments from −7 % to 63 % along the axial rotor tip chord. The potential of the concept is evaluated by a numerical investigation in the 1.5-stage setup with an inlet guide vane and tandem stator. It is shown that a circumferential groove can further increase the operating range for all belly configurations when positioned axially correctly. In this respect, equalization of the near-casing deceleration in the circumferential direction leads to an extension of the stall margin with both modifications. Concentrated regions of low momentum fluid with a large extent in radial direction should be avoided consequently. A tip vortex stability factor is introduced to quantitatively evaluate this effect. The operating range can thus already be estimated in a first approximation at the design point. In general, the groove and belly should be positioned where the tip leakage vortex meets the pressure side of the adjacent blade. If the groove is used together with the belly, the leading edge of the former should be situated at the location of maximum thickness of the near tip modification. The effects of the circumferential groove and the belly are then superimposed. If using only one modification, the belly appears better suited for ensuring an extension of the operating range while maintaining high efficiencies.

Omar, Hossin. "Interactive Computer Aided Preliminary Design of Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers." In ASME 2010 Power Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/power2010-27011.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to develop an interactive computer aided preliminary design program for shell and tube heat exchanger based on the Bell (Delaware) method with internal evaluation of all required physical properties utilizing the best methods in the open literature known for their accuracy and reliability. FORTRAN90 is the program language used in this work. All mechanical and geometrical required data are internally evaluated. This program will be used to study the performance of Bell (Delaware) method by comparing the results obtained via this program with experimental data from industry. Cost estimates are to be generated by the program for all components, using very well known cost estimate techniques. Finally, the developed program was tested for accuracy and consistency against existing design cases from industry. The program was tested with other six experimental samples, and it was found that the program work accurately and the percentage of error in most parameters are in the allowable.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper presents a new procedure to design a two-pulley synchronous belt transmission connecting, with no belt tensioner, two parallel-axis shafts with a variable velocity ratio. The procedure takes into account the limited number of choices for pitch and length of off-the-shelf synchronous belts, which translates into the need of fine-adjusting either the center distance or the law of motion. Differently from other approaches reported in the technical literature, the suggested method is based on the numerical solution of a set of functional equations. A numerical example shows application of the proposed method to a case study.

Abstract:
Model based tracking (MBT) of painted cars in the automotive mass production on conveyor belts with robots is a challenging task. Manydisturbing sources that have an impact on the MBTexist, like the influence of the localized work illumination, the synchronization of the MBTto the conveyor belt, reflections in the paint, variants of the cars and the complexity of the used CAD models. By having such complex systems the mere assessment of the accuracy and stability of MBT approaches by literature can be hard. A real world application is necessary for a better understanding. Therefore, we present the evaluation of MBT for a robotic gap measurement system onpainted cars. The influence of local lighting and car paint is analysed in detail regarding the MBT accuracy. To reduce complexity considering the car variants on a production line,we evaluated the MBT with different model setups and show the influence on the MBTresults. Regarding MBT in a complex calibrated system that runs twenty-four-seven, a broken or slightly displaced camera should not have a huge impact like a loss of production. For this reason,we present a method to exchange a camera within minutes andwithout a loss of the overall accuracy. The method relies on a separate test specimen and isevaluated in detail. The presented evaluations can help researchers and the industry to better understand and assess the influence and correlations of different error sources or disturbing factors for the usage of MBT in complex conveyor belt based robotic applications.
