Abstract:
While it may seem that "The Cap and Bells" finds its primary source in Yeats's love for Maud Gonne, the poem is also symbolic of his search for truth in occultism. In the 1880s and 90s Yeats coupled his reading of Shelley with a formal study of magic in the Golden Dawn, and the poem is a blend of Shelleyan and occult influences. The essay explores the Shelleyan/occult motif of death and rebirth through examining the poem's relation to the rituals, teachings, and symbols of the Golden Dawn. The essay examines the poem's relation to the Cabalistic Tree of Life, the Hanged Man of the Tarot, two Golden Dawn diagrams on the Garden of Eden, and the concept of Kundalini.

Abstract:
The salons were considered important sociability places, where relationships and alliances were settled and marriages arranged since the 18th century. The social article, in its turn, lead the representation of this sociability to the newspapers pages, turning them into a space of recognition for the high society, describing the fashion, the public, the events and the very worldliness ambiance. Through the comparative analysis of the texts by Marcel Proust and João do Rio, the present research intends to investigate this genre of great preeminence in newspapers and magazines form the Belle Époque in France and Brazil. In order to do so, we provide, in the first place, a historical and cultural context of the high society, the salons and the press from both countries. Then, we will exploit the journalistic and literary traits in the social articles. How did the writers take advantage of the printed media protocols? How fictional traits were inserted in these sections of the newspapers and why? How did João do Rio write salon articles in a country whose population was predominantly illiterate? Those were a few of the questions raised. Through systematic readings and analysis of text and genre on the newspapers Le Figaro and Le Gaulois regarding Proust, and O Paiz in the case of João do Rio, we were able to infer that the society pieces were made from a tension between the attempt to represent the Carioca and Parisian high societies salons splendor and the need to supply the demands of the media. We can state that both authors understand the genre and make good use of its rules and literary traits. Marcel Proust and João do Rio, despite being inserted in such different contexts, describe the salons rituals whose liturgy is know and acknowledged by its readers and yet place them into this universe, at the same time real and imagined, between economy and politics columns.

Ephemeris ganha importância no tocante à conservação do mito troiano, pois no Ocidente latino, desde o século I a.
Abstract: In this work, we study and translate integrally a late Latin work known as Ephemeris belli Troiani (Diary of the War of Troy ), anonymous and dating from the fourth century AD. Ephemeris reports the events of the Trojan War from the viewpoint of a first person narrator who presents himself as a Cretan soldier named Díctis, enlisted in the troop of the Greek com mander Idomeneu. The account of the battle between Greeks and Trojans, known in literature primarily by the reading of the Homer's Iliad, is dressed in Ephemeris of a rationalistic intention by diminishing the heroes to the regular human condition, by decr easing the performance of the gods and structuring the narrative logically and chronologically. Composed of six chapters, preceded by an epistle and a prologue, the work is a Latin version of a text of second century, written originally in Greek, which is now fragmented. Ephemeris gains importance with regard to the conservation of the Trojan myth. In the Latin West, since the first century BC, the story of Trojan War was less known through Homeric poems and Greek literature in general because of a precario usness in diffusion of the Greek language among the Roman elite. Add to this factor the later and growing pressure of the Church that rejected the polytheistic gods who inhabited the Homeric narrative. In this way other works composed in Latin assumed the transmission of the Trojan story that offered the Homeric epic. Of particular note is Ephemeris, which ...

Abstract:
Belly Laughs: Body Humor in Contemporary American Literature and Film Scholars are more than happy to laugh at but seem somewhat reluctant to discuss body humor, which is perhaps the most neglected form of comedy in recent criticism. In this dissertation, I examine the ways in which contemporary American writers and filmmakers use body humor in their works, not only in moments of so-called "comic relief" but also as a valid way of exploring many of the same issues that postmodern artists typically interrogate in their more somber moments. The writers discussed in this project-Philip Roth, Thomas Pynchon, Charles Johnson, and Woody Allen-were chosen for the divergent ways in which they present the body's comic predicament in psychological, metaphysical, and historical situations. The introduction explains the diverse traditions that these artists draw upon and considers how various theoretical approaches can affect our understanding of body humor. The first chapter examines Jewish-American novelist Philip Roth's use of absurd and grotesque body imagery as manifestations of his characters' moral dilemmas. The second chapter looks at how slapstick comedy informs a worldview dominated by paranioa and chaos in Thomas Pynchon's novels. Chapter Three looks at Woody Allen's early films, in which he parodies and revises the slapstick cinematic tradition of artists like Charlie Chaplin and The Marx Brothers. Chapter Four considers African-American writer and cartoonist Charles Johnson's depiction of the ways in which the body's desires and pitfalls complicate the quest for spiritual enlightenment.

This work objective is to establish a relation, starting from the analysis of some of Lima Barreto s works, personal writings, newspaper articles and chronicles, between those characters - created by him - which are, in some way, bound to madness, and the author s questioning view on the new urban scene, then on development, considering two fundamental points: (1) the author s utilitarian conception of literature, by him defended, able to contribute to the fighting against republican regime distortions, and (2) the moment of consolidation of psychiatry, with prominence to the author`s critics towards this science s discriminatory character in early XXth Century.

Abstract:
The available analysis on Lima Barreto\'s work give little emphasis to the failure of his life project. Starting from this new point of view, I will cast a light on the authors ill-fated literary trajectory. To do so, firstly I will rebuild the internal and external flows that exerted influence over Limas career. I will analyze three fundamental aspects of the literary activity: the macrosocial and historical structure of the carioca Belle Époque; the writers life trajectory; and how the different thematic flows pervaded his writing. By doing so, it will be possible to avoid the two most common explanations discussed on the specialized literature: either blaming his unsuccessfulness on the authors choice of Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha as his first novel to be published, or accepting the image of the cursed writer without properly pondering over it. The researchs conclusion will demonstrate that a different explanation is possible, one that comprehends both the social structure and the individual choices on a dialectic relation.

Basilio, Elena. "The translation of American radical feminist literature in Italy : the case of "Donne è bello"." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18029.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the role played by the translation process in the diffusion of some North American radical feminist concepts in Italy and, in particular, focuses on Donne è bello, a volume which has been selected as a case study because of the particularly important role it played within the Italian feminist movement and also because of the particular circumstances of its creation. The introduction (chapter one) states the research questions and briefly explains the reasons that led to the focus on this specific volume. Chapter two focuses on the methodology adopted, which was inspired by Toury's descriptive translation analysis but was also adapted to the needs and characteristics of this research. Chapter three provides some basic historical information regarding the Italian and North American feminist movements. Particular attention is devoted to the second wave of feminism in both countries and to the characteristics that they had in common. Subsequently, chapter four focuses on the Anabasi movement and on the volume Donne è bello, which constitutes the focus of this research. This chapter also provides some unpublished information about the Anabasi collective and about Donne è bello provided by Serena Castaldi, the founder of this group. The second half of this thesis (chapters five, six and seven) concerns the textual analysis of some features of Donne è bello in order to reconstruct the translation process and assess the reception of the translation by Italian readers. In particular, the aspects analysed include the sexual revolution, the role traditionally played by women in society and the practice of consciousness-raising, which had great importance for Italian feminists. Finally, chapter eight summarizes the results of the research and provides answers to the research questions raised in the introduction.

Oates, Caroline Jane. "Rereading women's magazines : the feminist identity of Best, Bella and Take a Break." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1997. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12776/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the attraction of women's weekly magazines to their readers was explored. Three bestselling titles in Britain, Best, Bella and Take a Break, were analysed for their production, content and reception using Hall's (1980) encoding/decoding model as a theoretical framework. The production of the magazines was addressed via interviews with the three editors and documentary sources, all placed within an environment of postfeminism which characterised the magazines' launches. The editors claimed their publications were intended to act as more than entertainment to the readers and identified Best, Bella and Take a Break as incorporating feminist elements. This feminism was interpreted as an attempt to support working class women in their struggles with everyday life via two distinct approaches: first, to offer advice, reassurance and information in the editorial (for example health, articles on employment and finance) and second, to give women a voice in the true life stories from which other readers could draw strength. The editors' intentions for Best, Bella and Take a Break were realised (although with different results for each magazine) in the content, which was analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. It was found that despite the potential ambiguity of certain content, the magazines nevertheless incorporated a supportive feminist agenda, but this was not always recognised by the readers. Over one hundred women were interviewed individually or in focus groups and it was found that they interpreted the magazines in a number of ways. This finding expanded on Hall's original three decoding positions of accept, negotiate and oppose. Although readers did not necessarily decode the magazines as intended by the editors, further evidence for the supportive feminism was apparent in the community ethos generated by the sharing of magazines amongst readers. It was also found that the trust and mediated interaction between a reader and her magazine further encouraged a sense of community. It was concluded that Best, Bella and Take a Break were offering a supportive feminist agenda to their readers, some of whom recognised and used this content in their everyday lives.

Abstract : In this study, we investigate the journalistic and literary work of Carmen Dolores (one of the pseudonyms of Emilia MoncorvoBandeira de Mello). Writer, chronicler, lecturer, dramaturgist and literary critic of the 19th century, she is commonly referred to as, in the intellectual field of her epoch, manlike, courageous, and audacious. From her work, we focus her journalistic, intellectual, critic and feminist acting by analyzing her chronicles published in O Paiznewspaper from 1905 to 1910. Recognized by the journalistic critic of her time, politically forgotten by canonical Literature History and Literature Critic along the 20th century, she is being rediscovered by contemporaneous feminist literary critic. We followed the trend of researches made in terms of retrieving works made by female writers, concerned about discover her collection, in order to analyze it, reveal repeated misconceptions, as well as to understand the insertion process of this woman into the historical-social-cultural context, identifying the prejudices faced by her; in other words, to evaluate the feminist position occupied by her in both intellectual and literary fields. This way, we aim to, concomitantly, give visibility to the work of a feminist writer of the 19th century, which waspolitically forgotten by the canonical studies, and to contribute with the rereading of the literary canon and to the construction of the literary historiography of Brazilian female writers. Such purposes conducted us to the thesis that the retrieval of literary and journalistic works, as well as the life and intellectual and feminist acting of Carmen Dolores, could lead to the recognizing and visibility of this writer and journalist as an intellectual feminist of the Brazilian Belle Époque. Notions of Feminist Criticism, Cultural Studies, New History, and Biographical Criticism are used in this work as theoretical support. Critical texts of chroniclers from the Belle Époque, other secondary sources, such as historians and canonical literary critics like Silvio Romero (1888) and Luciana Stegagno-Picchio (1997), as well as contemporary academic researches regarding feminism criticism were used in the literature review of this work. Aiming to undo misconceptions, to fulfill the lack of information of contemporary readers, and to build a biographical profile of the author from her social context and literary field, we make use of primary sources, such as parochial registers, institutional documents, obituaries, and social notes published in Brazilian periodicals during the lifetime of Emilia Mancorvo Bandeira de Mello.

Abstract:
The research has as its main object parts of João do Rio s writings found in A Alma Encantadora das Ruas (1908). The goal of the research and dissertation herein presented is to investigate the style present in these texts, intending to demonstrate that they represent a interwining transition between a strict literature contribution to a specific jounalistic text: João do Rio would had established the bridge to contemporaneous journalistic writings. The research approach consists in the analysis and classification of selected texts the object under investigation usualy qualified as chronicles by literature experts. However, the relevance of a remarkable journalistic style is found in João do Rio s writings. The chapters of this dissertation add on each other leading to place his writings in the cathegory of chroniclereportage, the concept that motivated the research developed. The investigation encompasses: the writer biography and the background literature influencing him; the historical, social and economical context existing during the first decade of the 20th century, a period during which had appeared a number of writings that contributed to the framing of the interwining components of the journalistic and the literature styles. The flânerie incorporated by João do Rio in his texts and the outcomes of this practice on his writings are analysed in the present dissertation. Furthermore, comments on the stilistics were added demonstrating that the flanêur was not present in the environment he described. The evolution and definitions related to chronicle and reportage are addressed as demanded by the the coexistence of both styles in João do Rio s writings. In addition, the contextual and conceptual components described are step by step followed by a detailed analisys of the investigated object.

Abstract:

Abstract:
By the 1980s, Quebec formalists, including Bellefeuille, had abandoned the formalist practice typical of the previous decade. Bellefeuille then chose to write differently, integrating the expression of both self and reality in his work. He didn't, however, exclude the formalist contribution altogether, wishing rather to find a mixed aesthetic, combining both formalist and intimist elements. The dissertation will consider this aesthetic as exemplified in the poetry collection entitled Elle était belle comme une idée, a work encompassing an awareness of one's self as well as the Other and the world, while exploring the need of making room for reality and the difficulty this entails. The study examines the poet's overall approach as well as his attempts at opening up to the Other and his quest for a different way of writing. It concludes that the resulting aesthetic represents a compromise between formalism and intimism, two seemingly opposite poles.

Abstract:
Intertextuality, Literature and Fine Arts in José Lucas. An investigation from a semiotic-analytical perspective. Mª Encarnación Navarro Martínez. Universidad de Murcia. 2015 Abstract: The main objective of this work is to analyse Jose Lucas’ working life from a semiotic viewpoint, as an act of interpretation, this document is trying to present his meaning and his sense from an intertextual perspective. Other objectives that have been developed are “to conceive of” the painting as open work, having in mind concepts like “implicit reader” or “intertextual reader”; focussing on “heterosemic values” of the work for the intertextual encounter between the artistic world of the autor and the reader’s aesthetic world. This document tries to give “intertextual” links with the artistic work of José Lucas from the recognition and understanding of the “poliedric range” of his output in different aspects and texts as a poetic pretext which links both. and interpreting the ecfrastica painting of José Lucas with an element of mediation between the painting and reality. This PhD thesis follows a qualitative methodology, based mainly on the interpretation of information through a triangular analysis: the PHD candidate’s research, review by the supervisor of the thesis and engagement with the author’s ideas. The information discovered by these studies can be divided into three main categories: direct observation, in-depth interviews and the use of different documents. It’s important to emphasise the large amount of unpublished documents which helped in getting closer to an understanding of Jose Lucas’ work; names like Jaime Siles, Antonio Colinas, Luis Antonio de Villena, Antonio Lucas, Xavier Ribalta, Juan Antonio Molina, José Antonio Lozano,… The conclusions reached by this work started from a ‘heterosemic value’ standpoint. On the uncertain meaning of the pictorial signs, it is necessary to consider how essentially polemic and versatile his character was for explaining the effective consequences of that uncertainty – that even though the behaviour and meaning of the sign is uncertain, it is no less real for him. The imposition of modern art has created the abdication of the canonic order of referencing realism which has contributed to opening up the possibilities of plasticity of suggestion in text; strengthening the collaboration of the receiver. It is this that has occured with José Lucas´ work. To be able to give sense and establish some meanings, the person who contemplates his life´s work needs a lot of context about where and from whom is the artist’s inspiration. The relations between between text and image in José Lucas work, establish numerous links which sometimes have their origin in the text and sometimes in the image or vice versa. This generates a dialectic which germinates in a synthesis of both from a semioticisation (in Peirce´s meaning) of one of them or both together. The stylistic mechanisms used by José Lucas to build his “ecfrásica” work are knowledge of the relations between painting and literature which are at the same time a way to be close with reality and interpret it. This is essential in every “ecfrástico” exercise, the presence of the absent poem like an element of mediation between the subjectivity of the “I” which is painted and the first objectivity already lost. In this camp José Lucas is noted from his mediator painting as a deeply original author rooted in a new tradition “the ut poesis picture” tradition, unquenchable of ramifications and derivations

Abstract:
Various contemporary female authors deploy supernatural motifs portrayed through or alongside diverse forms of intermediality in texts which thematise the patriarchal oppression of women. In order to throw light on this phenomenon, this thesis investigates the intermedial relations and supernatural motifs of Carmen Maria Machado’s novella “Especially Heinous: 272 Views of Law & Order: SVU”, and their relation to the political themes of the text. The analysis is based on the method of intermediality, primarily on Lars Elleström’s and Irina O. Rajewsky’s categorisations of intermedial relations. The supernatural motifs are situated within the hybrid context of the gothic and magical realism, and understood as an expression of strangeness. The analysis of this thesis finds that media transformation in combination with supernatural motifs serve to visualise oppressive and violent structures that are typically obscured. What is more, the similarities and tensions between intermediality and supernatural strangeness emphasise the dread and confusion produced in the encounter with uncanny or eerie societal forces. Finally, the tension and the resistance that arise where supernatural strangeness and intermediality meet illustrate a fundamental dilemma of communication: that it is always mediated, and thus, always incomplete.

Abstract:

This study aims at identifying and interpreting the variety of literary types found in Lima Barreto s prose. We understand the typification process in the building of a character is related to two diffferent and articulated sources, in one side there is the living world, from which it can be taken; in the other side, there are the literary traditions, in which the types go round and tranform themselves, getting new contents. Nonetheless, the perspective of this study is to analyze the typesin the literary universe of a unique author that, as far as we know, built a critical vision of the brazilian society in the chaotic age of republican transition, in the beginning of the 20th century. We start from the idea that in the literary picturing of a realistic character the typification of characters and the narrative situations repeats itself and doesn t depend on a flat or round nature. Therefore, the literary typeis not seen as a superficial simplification, but as a try to elaborate a previous notion, an almost concept, which has the role to elucidate the historical and social situations represented in the narratives. We understand that the critical content of Lima Barreto s literature can be considered consistent and a work of quality due to the typification. And this is one of the reasons for his critical fortune that got him a place as a Brazilian 20th century literature canone. From the methodological point of view, this study is far from the perspective of bringing up the typical characters in a substantial way and chooses to analyze them in their articulations during the narrative process; so the type doesn t exist alone, but as the result of intercrossed relationships in which they are in: the bovarist and quixotic characters that are in Lima Barreto s literature, show up in a contradictory game against the conformist characters, the smart, the naive, the positivist, the skeptic that surround them. In this way, we try to situate ourselves in the inner narratives perspective, eventhough, in order to to do so we have searched for the reality of the living world in Rio de Janeiro and the belle époque biographical, historical and sociology s elements to understand the analyzed narratives picturing. In Lima Barreto s literature s corpus we analyse four short stories ( Na janela , Miss Edith e seu tio , O filho da Gabriela , O homem que sabia javanês ) and the novel O triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma ; but, in order to do so, we have gone through his chronicles as in his other works of fiction, elements that allow na intercrossed analysis of Lima Barreto s typicological universe

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis explores the notion of opposition in the Sonetti romaneschi by the Roman poet Giuseppe Gioachino Belli (1791-1863). It sees the poet as a warring rebel on the literary scene and examines his poetics and rhetoric of war through his choice of form (the hallowed sonnet structure), language (the ‘rotten’ vernacular) and subject (the downtrodden, previously voiceless underclass); it shows that these cornerstones of Belli’s opus are in polemical response to literary stimuli and intimately connected to the political, religious and sociological upheavals in and beyond Rome in the troubled run-up to Unification. Chapter one, entitled ‘Breaking the mould’, draws on Belli’s explicit declaration of war on his literary predecessors, and considers the influence of the Milanese writer Carlo Porta, arguing that Belli is more inimical than amicable, and not the simple imitator as thought to date. Chapter two, ‘A passage of arms: possessing the dialogue sonnet’, maintains that the fulcrum of Belli’s antagonistic poetics and his realist enterprise lies in his unprecedented use of the dialogue sonnet form and the staging of direct debate. Chapter three, entitled ‘The Battle of the Sexes’, treats opposition at a thematic level, applying gender studies and related theory to Belli for the first time. Chapter four, ‘War and peace: the silent revolution’, examines Belli’s creation of a totally new literary language, fulfilling the criteria for what Deleuze and Guattari, within broadly Marxist parameters, would identify as a ‘minor literature’ in the work of Kafka, in which a major language is somehow wrested from its anchors of power, or ‘deterritorialized’, to subvert the literary world from within. The thesis shows that Belli is more revolutionary than previously thought as a literary innovator, and an understudied giant of modern European literature as opposed to the marginal figure the historiography is wont to maintain.

Abstract:
Forgiveness by Andradina de Oliveira: Urban Fiction in the Rio-Grandense Belle Époque aims at making a discriptive-analitical study on this novel published by Andradina de Oliveira in 1910, in Porto Alegre City. Andradina de Oliveira's fiction is built through an ethnographic view which registers the heterogeneity of the city landscape with accurate detailment, highliting power relations in terms of gender and social class. Such relations establish themselves in belle époque changings to modernity. The investigation of the city brings out discussions about southern identity in opposition to national and cosmopolitan identity, as well as discussions about modernity, which are established in the peripheral urban space in formation. The structure of the work is consisted of three chapter focusing respectively on culture and regionalism, class and gender, and male public place and narrative voice. It was concluded that, although the novel is not there in the literary historiography due to authoral positioning issues, it is an outstanding moment in the literary history of the state and this present dissertation can become one of the elements to enable a future insertion of this work in the canon.

Carpenter, Damian A. "Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and American Folk Outlaw Performance." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://www.amzn.com/1472484428.

Abstract:
With its appeal predicated upon what civilized society rejects, there has always been something hidden in plain sight when it comes to the outlaw figure as cultural myth. Damian A. Carpenter traverses the unsettled outlaw territory that is simultaneously a part of and apart from settled American society by examining outlaw myth, performance, and perception over time. Since the late nineteenth century, the outlaw voice has been most prominent in folk performance, the result being a cultural persona invested in an outlaw tradition that conflates the historic, folkloric, and social in a cultural act. Focusing on the works and guises of Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Bob Dylan, Carpenter goes beyond the outlaw figure’s heroic associations and expands on its historical (Jesse James, Billy the Kid), folk (John Henry, Stagolee), and social (tramps, hoboes) forms. He argues that all three performers represent a culturally disruptive force, whether it be the bad outlaw Lead Belly represented to an urban bourgeoisie audience, the good outlaw Guthrie shaped to reflect the social concerns of marginalized people, or the honest outlaw Dylan offered audiences who responded to him as a promoter of clear-sighted self-evaluation. As Carpenter shows, the outlaw and the law as located in society are interdependent in terms of definition. His study provides an in-depth look at the outlaw figure’s self-reflexive commentary and critique of both the performer and society that reflects the times in which they played their outlaw roles.

Abstract:
Linda Hogan is a Chickasaw author whose extensive work includes novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and essays. She is also an environmentalist whose activism is built upon a Native understanding of nature and the relations between human and nonhuman beings. This thesis focuses on two of her novels, Solar Storms (1995) and Power (1998), and explores the healing processes of their protagonists, Angela and Omishto, respectively. In both novels, the characters engage in a movement of abandoning a mainstream American way of being – a way of being highly informed by the ideology of Manifest Destiny – toward a reconnection with their Native ancestry and a tribal apprehension of life and the world. Specifically, this work explores the characters’ gradual engagement in what Laguna author Paula Gunn Allen (1992) defines as a ceremonial time sense, a particular experience of time that engenders a psychic integration, as opposed to a mechanical, clock-based time sense, which generates fragmentation and enhances a separation between time and space, person and place, nature and culture. This work explores how the characters’ movement toward a rich self-recognition as Indians (OWENS, 1994) represents a movement of opening to the motions of the lifeworld, as well as the dissolution of deep-rooted categories such as subject and object, internal self and external world. Furthermore, this thesis examines how a ceremonial time sense is connected to the Plains tribes’ conception of a sacred hoop – an all-encompassing unity that contains the whole of existence, and in which all movement is related to all other movement.

Rio de Janeiro was the first Brazilian city to undergo a comprehensive urban reform, as early as the first years of the 20th century (1903-1906). This was not only a structural and architectural reform but also ideological and cultural. It aimed to transform the city and to involve it in a larger framework of modernization, adding to its attractiveness at a moment of high demand for european investments, technicians and immigrants. Bearing this context in mind, the core of this dissertation lies in the analysis of the idea of city the proposers of the urban reform wanted to see realized. The materials employed for the aforesaid analysis were the official documents produced for the undertaking and those chronicles of Paulo Barreto – best known as João do Rio – published in the Gazeta de Notícias’ Cinematógrapho column from 1907 to 1910.

Abstract:
Originating from Northern Africa, atypical in our part of the world, the European genet (Genetta genetta) is remarkable for its physiognomy (pointed head, fox-like ears, panther spots and a long annulate tail) as much as its furtiveness. This nocturnal animal is mysterious, and its history has never been fully studied: how, when and by whom was it introduced in southern Europe? Was it hunted? Has it ever been tamed? By whom, when and how has it been represented? What have been its symbolical meanings? It is important to establish the link between the genet and the physical environment in which it has been evolving, thereby establishing it as an environmental indicator. Indeed, if this project aims mostly at delivering the history of the genet and of its representation with a focus on its relation to man in the Mediterranean region, it also considers the wider perspective of environmental studies. Thus, the historical continuum points to the changing relationship between man and animal according to different geographical, social, economic and political contexts. Understanding the past and present history of an animal, its historical and imaginary relations to man and its various representations can help to preserve the species more effectively. This research lies within the scope of a co-evolutive history of the relationships between Mediterranean societies and the animal kingdom, from prehistorical times to the present. To complete this project, it proved necessary to resort not only to textual resources, but also to use archeological and iconographical resources

Abstract:

This work studies three texts by Sylvia Plath: “Lady Lazarus”, “Daddy” and The Bell Jar from a feminist, gender and cultural perspective. I investigate how the texts take a stand regarding the motive and meaning of the representations of suicide in these works through the theoretical framework of African-American activist Huey Newton. The Black Panther party cofounder Newton redefines the concept of suicide. First and foremost he views suicide as a reaction to social conditions, coining the terms Reactionary Suicide and Revolutionary Suicide. Revolutionary Suicide is fueled by hope, when refusing to take part in any game of slave and master in society; instead of the normative view that suicide may be fueled by powerlessness and despair, as in the case of Reactionary Suicide. A feminist and gendered perspective on representations of suicide deconstructs traditional preconceptions of femininity and masculinity in the case of suicide and a normative reading: an embodiment by women and men of madness and rationality; viewing them as objects and subjects respectively. This study proposes that the representations of suicide in the texts from a cultural reading show the refusal of women to partake in a life defined by patriarchy, limiting and oppressing women’s everyday life. Suicide is seen through this unusual approach as an emptying out, a repositioning of the self through these performative suicides. Furthermore, through Revolutionary Suicide agency is claimed, with a hope for a better reality for the oppressed, in the intersection of the dichotomies of reality and utopia, literature and history, oppression and freedom. From a feminist perspective suicide is the catalyst to express social, political and cultural critique.

Large, Sophie. Thesis, Dijon, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014DIJOL031.

Full text
Abstract:
This work deals with the first six novels of the novelist, poet and ex-revolutionary from Nicaragua, Gioconda Belli. It explores three recurrent themes – Revolt, Revolution and Utopia – and endeavours to explain the reason for their obsessional presence. As intermediaries between the individual and the collective, these concepts require both a psychoanalytical and sociological perspective. These two academic disciplines thus constitute the main tools of the research, as well as social psychology, which deals indeed with the psychological processes at play in interpersonal relations. The underlying assumption is that commitment stems from the characters’ unstable identity at the beginning of each novel, and that the choice between Revolt, Revolution and Utopia depends upon the circumstances of the creation of these identities. To put this assumption to the test, our study tries to locate the marks of emotional deprivation in each protagonist, and analyses the identity processes which are likely to influence the determination to commit and the psychological mechanisms resulting from such decision. Yet, the quest for identity is not quenched by commitment and this puts into question the ideological function of Revolt, Revolution and Utopia in these novels. Hence, this study equally tries to determine the role of these three objects in Belli’s work. It considers their temporal dimension, which has both a diegetic and an ideological function, and studies the argumentative devices attached to them, revealing thus the author’s political instrumentalisation of literature
