Abstract:
Abstract The objective of this study was to identify the pig belly characteristics and to develop regression equations predicting its composition. Based on video image and chemical analysis of 216 bellies, the predictive variables were selected according to their relation to chemically determined belly lipid contents. To estimate the belly fat percentage (BF%), the two best equations constructed were: Equation 1: BF% = 49.960 - 0.7174 × SHME2 + 0.5047 × HE2A (R2 = 0.66, RMSE = 3.22); Equation 2: BF% = 43.888 - 0.6014 × SHME2 + 0.4769 × HE2A + 0.0014 × ARTO2 - 0.2697 × HE3A (R2 = 0.70, RMSE = 2.25), where: SHME2 = lean meat percentage area of the belly 2 from total cut area, HE2A = the Belly2 height at point 1, ARTO2 = the Belly2 total cut area, HE3A = the Belly3 height at point 1. Compared to lean meat, the percentage of belly fat (BF%) appears to be a more appropriate criterion for the objective evaluation of belly composition due to the simplicity and accuracy of the final regression equation (higher R2).

Abstract:
Commercial technologies for assessing meat quality may be useful for performing early in-line belly firmness classification. This study used 207 pork carcasses to measure predicted iodine value (IV) at the clear plate region of the carcass with an in-line near-infrared probe (NitFomTM), calculated IV of belly fat using wet chemistry methods, determined the belly bend angle (an objective method to measure belly firmness), and took dimensional belly measurements. A regression analysis revealed that NitFomTM predicted IV (R2 = 0.40) and belly fat calculated IV (R2 = 0.52) separately contributed to the partial variation of belly bend angle. By testing different NitFomTM IV classification thresholds, classifying soft bellies in the 15th percentile resulted in 5.31% false negatives, 5.31% false positives, and 89.38% correctly classified soft and firm bellies. Similar results were observed when the classification was based on belly fat IV calculated from chemically analyzed fatty acid composition. By reducing the level of stringency on the percentile of the classification threshold, an increase in false positives and decrease in false negatives was observed. This study suggests the IV predicted using the NitFomTM may be useful for early in-line presorting of carcasses based on expected belly firmness, which could optimize profitability by allocating carcasses to specific cutout specifications.

Growing pigs were fed either ad libitum to 85 kg live weight, or ad libitum to 95 kg and then half maintenance until their live weight was reduced to 85 kg, when both groups were slaughtered. The middles were divided into eye, wedge and belly dorso-ventral portions and dissected. The carcasses of pigs which lost live weight before slaughter had less fat in the wedge, and less fat and muscle in the belly. They also had a greater proportion of the total middle fat and muscle in the eye portion, less fat in the wedge and less muscle in the belly portion.

Abstract:
Abstract. The objective of study was to evaluate the effect of sex and terminal sire line on pork belly composition of commercially produced pigs. The animals were progeny of White Meaty sows and three terminal sire lines: HA × PN, LA and YO × PN. Barrows: gilts ratio was 97:102. Pigs were slaughtered at average carcass weight 85.73–89.0 kg according to genotype. Day after slaughter, the dissection of right half sides was done. After that, the detailed dissection of trimmed belly to individual tissues (bones, meat, fat and skin) was performed. The effect of sex on belly characteristics was significant. Gilts had higher meat proportion in belly than barrows (51.41 vs. 47.21 %), which reached higher content of subcutaneous and intermuscular fat (43.92 vs. 38.83 %). The influence of terminal sire line was also significant. All differences were found between HaxPN genotype and other two terminal sire lines. Progeny of Ha × PN sire line had the highest percentage of meat in belly (51.28 %) while progeny of YO × PN had the highest content of fat and skin (42.79 %) and bones in belly (9.48 %).

Over-eating, with its inevitable result, being overweight ranging from 'the fuller figure' to obesity - is rated as undesirable today as leprosy was in Biblical times. Being fat is the object of shame and ridicule both external and internal. This essay is a study of the work I am doing with a client who weighs 148kg. The initial phase of therapy and aspects of our work to date are described, with emphasis on the model and techniques of The Healing Dance Therapy that are employed, and on the relationship that has developed between this client and myself the therapist, as a result. Abstract:
Abstract Corpulence is an area of body-history which is receiving increased attention in line with current concerns about rising obesity as well as social movements which champion body positivity and fat acceptance. Historians have challenged the traditional narrative that in past societies being ‘fat’ was simply viewed as a positive sign of wealth and prosperity, showing instead that fatness could be criticized as early as the sixteenth century. Yet the complexities and contradictions present in historical understandings of bodyweight and size often remain overlooked. This article explores such nuances in conceptions of fatness and thinness by examining the various ways in which bodyweight and size held meaning in the specific context of the Lutheran Reformation. Through a consideration of the bodily resurrection, apocalyptic belief and the form of heavenly bodies, it demonstrates how discussions of weight and fatness were embedded in fundamental debates about sin and salvation. Within these discussions, the significance of the belly comes to the fore. For Luther in particular, the belly was a source of nuance, enabling understandings of weight to be flexible and presenting the complexity of differentiating between fat and thin bodies, where ‘fat’ could be deployed as a metaphor regardless of actual physicality. Luther’s own large size has been shown to be linked to his theology as well as to his success as a reformer, and this article takes this position further, using the figure of Luther as a lens through which to view the wider significance of bodyweight and size in the Reformation.

One experiment was conducted to determine the collagen and adipocyte characteristics in pork belly fat with different iodine values (IV) and if these factors contribute to belly firmness. An additional two experiments were conducted to create an objective method to score bacon distortion during cooking and to determine how IV and cooking method contribute to bacon distortion. Experiment 1 sorted pork bellies (n=72) into three IV categories: High 76.5 g/100g, Intermediate 70.5 g/100g, and Low 64.9 g/100g. Belly characteristics and firmness were measured before processing into bacon. After processing, 3 bacon slices were selected from the belly and analyzed for histochemistry and collagen analysis. No differences were observed between belly characteristics, while High IV bellies showed softer bellies. Adipocyte characteristics remained unchanged between IV groups. High IV bellies showed greater amounts of collagen. Experiment 2 cooked bacon slices (n=585) on three different appliances (griddle, microwave, and oven) and scored the resulting distortion using a subjective scale. Raw and cooked bacon characteristics were measured to determine which response variables contributing to distortion. Bacon slices were removed from 6 different locations within each belly sampled. Two distortion measurements were created to objectively describe distortion response (crest frequency and bacon distortion index. Subjective distortion scores, crest frequency, bacon distortion index, and raw and cooked bacon characteristics were shown to change between locations of the belly. Accuracy of predictive equations developed to predict distortion scores were low. Experiment 3 evaluated how IV interacts with cooking methodology to influence cooking characteristics, fat quality and distortion of bacon. Bacon slices (n=300) were organized into two IV categories, Low (61.52 to 65.54 g/100g) and High (78.83 to 85.34 g/100g) and cooked using three different appliances (oven, microwave, and griddle). Bacon from the Low IV group had the greatest amount of fat. Cooking bacon on a griddle showed the greatest distortion scores, while the oven produced bacon with the lowest distortion scores. Bacon with higher IV produced bacon with increased distortion scores. Bacon from the High IV group showed smaller cooked dimensions than the Low IV bacon. Neither cooking method nor IV level affected the cooked fatty acid composition.

The Centrifugal fan inlet clearance leakage has a great impaction on its efficiency and energy consumption. Energy conservation and carbon reduction are promoted vigorously around the world. This topic should be studied in-depth. This thesis takes advantage of two methods to research centrifugal fan inlet leakage. One is experimental method, and the other is numerical method. The eccentric effect is studied mainly by experimental methods. The labyrinth leak-proof analysis of high pressure fan inlet is purely by numerical method. The numerical method in this thesis will make use of commercial software package Fluent released by ANSYS Inc. The eccentric effect experiment uses a test bench which can simulate the centrifugal fan inlet geometry, with wind tunnel that in accordance with AMCA-201-99 specification to measure air flow rate and pressure drop by changing three radial clearances between stator and rotor(ε=3mm、5mm、7.5mm), five axial overlap lengths(L=10mm、20mm、30mm、40mm、50mm),and different rotor eccentricity(e=1mm、1.5mm、2mm...~6.5mm), six rotor revolution speeds(N=600rpm、1200rpm、1800rpm、2400rpm、3000rpm、3600rpm). This thesis analyzes the effect of these four parameters to the drag coefficient Cd when air flow through the gap. The experimental results shows that when ε increases the impact of the eccentricity to Cd will decrease, overlapping depth effect on the Cd is also reduced with the increase of ε ; revolution speed effect in a small gap is greater than that of large gap. Eccentricity effect is also the same. In high pressure fan inlet leak pressure drop software analysis will include the following effects. First is with or without the labyrinth, second is labyrinth installation in bell-mouth or shroud, third is labyrinth first tooth position on the axis direction, the last is number of labyrinth installation. . The numerical analysis results show that labyrinth first tooth align with overlapping entrance will has better leak-proof effect(Seal A). After analysis eight cases which are consisted by different gap, flow rate and two seal position situation. After compare and judge the results comprehensively. We find that when the labyrinth installed in the bell-shaped mouth elongation and diameter less than that of the shroud(Case12). The leak-proof effect is better than the others and the more dense teeth the more better effect. And labyrinth axial pressure distribution diagram show that when increase labyrinth axial length to 6mm leak-proof effect will nearly approach saturated

Abstract:
‘The fat and the thin: The Belly of Paris’ evokes the violent beginnings of the Rougon-Macquart family during Louis-Napoleon’s coup d’état of December 1851. The novel tells the story of Florent, who is unjustly imprisoned and exiled following the disturbances. On returning to Paris, he finds it transformed beyond recognition by the Empire’s burgeoning capitalist economy, epitomized by the prosperous butcher’s shop owned by Florent’s half-brother Quenu and his wife Lisa. A temple of gluttony, the shop is situated close to the great new food markets, Les Halles. The novel turns on Florent’s malaise in, and eventual expulsion from, this monstrous world of food.

Abstract:
Abstract Mechanical and fatigue properties of cold sprayed (CS) Cu20Sn bell metal were tested in order to assess the potential applicability of the technology to repair impact areas of church bells. The CS bell metal was compared to its traditional cast counterparts, a fine-grained Cu22Sn bell metal seen in small bells, and a coarse-grained Cu20Sn seen in large bells. Similar to other CS metals, it was shown that both the strength as well as the fatigue crack growth rates at low loading are similar to the cast materials. The fracture toughness of the CS material was comparable with the finegrained Cu22Sn bell metal, while both were significantly lower than the coarse-grained Cu20Sn bell metal. The impact damage rate of the CS material determined by a periodic impact test was significantly higher than the (finegrained) cast material. Both materials showed a stabilized, very slow damage rate after the relatively fast initial crater formation. The results presented in this paper identify CS as a feasible restoration technology for church bells, and the introduced methodology presents a characterization method for quantitative description of bell metal impact damage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Mechanism of destruction caused by electrostatic discharge of PN junction was examined from two viewpoints; classification of destruction mode with consideration to destructive energy density, and comparison of destruction shape. Destructive energy density of PN junction was calculated based on Speakman model, and destruction mode was classified by Wunsch-Bell plot. As a result of Wunsch-Bell plot, electric discharge which occur at low resistance, for example machine model (MM: C∙R = 200pF ∙ 0Ω), resulted in adiabatic destruction that does not involve thermal diffusion. With electric discharge at high resistance, for example human body model (HBM: C∙R = 100pF ∙ 1500Ω), excessive destruction in intermediate region that involves thermal diffusion, and depending on the device, destruction at equilibrium region were proven to be reproducible. In case of MM, (adiabatic region destruction) destruction was confirmed in a wide extent of the joint part, but in case of HBM (intermediate region destruction) destruction was confirmed near the center of the joint part. From this fact, it was found that by verifying the places of destruction and their shapes, although in special cases, it is possible to know the destruction mode when destruction occurs.

Abstract:
The reduction of noise generated by aircraft at take-off and approach is crucial in the design of new commercial aircraft. Landing gear noise is significant contribution to the total noise sources during approach. The noise is generated by the interaction between the non-aerodynamic components of the landing gear and the flow, which leads to turbulence generated noise. This research presents results from the European Clean Sky funded ALLEGRA project. The project investigated a full-scale Nose Landing Gear (NLG) model featuring the belly fuselage, bay cavity and hydraulic dressing. A number of low noise treatments were applied to the NLG model including a ramp door spoiler, a wheel axel wind shield, wheel hub caps and perforated fairings. Over 250 far field sensors were deployed in a number of microphone arrays. Since technologies were tested both in isolation and in combination the additive effects of the technologies can be assessed. This study describes the different techniques used to quantify the contribution of each technology to the global noise reduction. The noise reduction technologies will be assessed as a function of frequency range and through beamforming techniques such as source deletion.

Abstract:
With the development of mobile technology and the progress of an Untact society, the number of people who listen to lectures or music in various urban environments is increasing. In response to such an increase in demand, Active Noise Canceling(ANC) earphones that remove ambient background noise or static and also enable stable listening have been developed, and the earphones are enjoying great popularity. However, these ANC earphones can put the user in a dangerous situation at any time because they block even major alarm sounds such as a car horn or fire alarm. In this study, 10 men and women in their 20s, who frequently use ANC earphones, were asked to listen to music by wearing ANC earphones without prior notification of the fact that a fire alarm sound was transmitted. After that, the fire alarm bell or emergency broadcast sound was randomly generated for them to recognise the fire situation, and the time it took to start evacuation was measured. And in all these processes, EEG was simultaneously measured to analyse changes in emotions such as arousal responses felt by the experimental participants As a result of the experiment, it was found that the case of transmitting an emergency broadcast made the participants start evacuation approximately 23 seconds faster than the case of sounding the fire alarm bell. However, as a result of correlation analysis with EEG values indicating arousal responses such as tension, irritability, and nervousness, the significance probability(p-value) was 0.825, indicating that there is no statistically significant correlation. Therefore, it was found that the participants’ awareness of the fire alarm sound decreased when wearing ANC earphones regardless of the types of the fire alarm whether it was an alarm bell or an emergency broadcast.

Abstract:
The project was originally aimed at investigating and developing new efficient methods for cost effective removal of ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO), in particular broiler and laying houses (NH₃) and hog houses (H₂S). In both cases, the principal idea was to design and operate a dedicated air collection system that would be used for the treatment of the gases, and that would work independently from the general ventilation system. The advantages envisaged: (1) if collected at a point close to the source of generation, pollutants would arrive at the treatment system at higher concentrations; (2) the air in the vicinity of the animals would be cleaner, a fact that would promote animal growth rates; and (3) collection efficiency would be improved and adverse environmental impact reduced. For practical reasons, the project was divided in two: one effort concentrated on NH₃₍g₎ removal from chicken houses and another on H₂S₍g₎ removal from hog houses. NH₃₍g₎ removal: a novel approach was developed to reduce ammonia emissions from CAFOs in general, and poultry houses in particular. Air sucked by the dedicated air capturing system from close to the litter was shown to have NH₃₍g₎ concentrations an order of magnitude higher than at the vents of the ventilation system. The NH₃₍g₎ rich waste air was conveyed to an acidic (0<pH<~5) bubble column reactor where NH₃ was converted to NH₄⁺. The reactor operated in batch mode, starting at pH 0 and was switched to a new acidic absorption solution just before NH₃₍g₎ breakthrough occurred, at pH ~5. Experiments with a wide range of NH₃₍g₎ concentrations showed that the absorption efficiency was practically 100% throughout the process as long as the face velocity was below 4 cm/s. The potential advantages of the method include high absorption efficiency, lower NH₃₍g₎ concentrations in the vicinity of the birds, generation of a valuable product and the separation between the ventilation and ammonia treatment systems. A small scale pilot operation conducted for 5 weeks in a broiler house showed the approach to be technically feasible. H₂S₍g₎ removal: The main goal of this part was to develop a specific treatment process for minimizing H₂S₍g₎ emissions from hog houses. The proposed process consists of three units: In the 1ˢᵗ H₂S₍g₎ is absorbed into an acidic (pH<2) ferric iron solution and oxidized by Fe(III) to S⁰ in a bubble column reactor. In parallel, Fe(III) is reduced to Fe(II). In the 2ⁿᵈ unit Fe(II) is bio-oxidized back to Fe(III) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (AF).In the 3ʳᵈ unit S⁰ is separated from solution in a gravity settler. The work focused on three sub-processes: the kinetics of H₂S absorption into a ferric solution at low pH, the kinetics of Fe²⁺ oxidation by AF and the factors that affect ferric iron precipitation (a main obstacle for a continuous operation of the process) under the operational conditions. H₂S removal efficiency was found higher at a higher Fe(III) concentration and also higher for higher H₂S₍g₎ concentrations and lower flow rates of the treated air. The rate limiting step of the H₂S reactive absorption was found to be the chemical reaction rather than the transition from gas to liquid phase. H₂S₍g₎ removal efficiency of >95% was recorded with Fe(III) concentration of 9 g/L using typical AFO air compositions. The 2ⁿᵈ part of the work focused on kinetics of Fe(II) oxidation by AF. A new lab technique was developed for determining the kinetic equation and kinetic parameters (KS, Kₚ and mₘₐₓ) for the bacteria. The 3ʳᵈ part focused on iron oxide precipitation under the operational conditions. It was found that at lower pH (1.5) jarosite accumulation is slower and that the performance of the AF at this pH was sufficient for successive operation of the proposed process at the H₂S fluxes predicted from AFOs. A laboratory-scale test was carried out at Purdue University on the use of the integrated system for simultaneous hydrogen sulfide removal from a H₂S bubble column filled with ferric sulfate solution and biological regeneration of ferric ions in a packed column immobilized with enriched AFbacteria. Results demonstrated the technical feasibility of the integrated system for H₂S removal and simultaneous biological regeneration of Fe(III) for potential continuous treatment of H₂S released from CAFO. NH₃ and H₂S gradient measurements at egg layer and swine barns were conducted in winter and summer at Purdue. Results showed high potential to concentrate NH₃ and H₂S in hog buildings, and NH₃ in layer houses. H₂S emissions from layer houses were too low for a significant gradient. An NH₃ capturing system was designed and tested in a 100-chicken broiler room. Five bell-type collecting devices were installed over the litter to collect NH₃ emissions. While the air extraction system moved only 10% of the total room ventilation airflow rate, the fraction of total ammonia removed was 18%, because of the higher concentration air taken from near the litter. The system demonstrated the potential to reduce emissions from broiler facilities and to concentrate the NH₃ effluent for use in an emission control system. In summary, the project laid a solid foundation for the implementation of both processes, and also resulted in a significant scientific contribution related to AF kinetic studies and ferrous analytical measurements.
