In this article, I examine the autobiographical writing and reading practices of Giovanni Bembo, a colonial governor posted to Skopelos and Skiathos in the Aegean in 1525. During his term as rettore in the Aegean, Bembo’s scribe had an affair with his daughter and helped her to abort her ensuing pregnancy. Bembo then ordered the scribe to be publicly castrated. In the aftermath of this violent act, Bembo was blacklisted from any further governmental position in Venice. In his autobiographical letter, written ten years after the events on Skiathos, Bembo reflects on his role in the colonial Aeg

The basis of this study is the correspondence of Pietro Bembo, the well-known humanist, papal secretary and latterly Cardinal, with his cousin Gian Matteo Bembo and his long-standing secretary and friend, Cola Bruno. These letters are revealing of how a non-medical man understood and described illness in the sixteenth century, and his personal experience associated particularly with ?mal delle reni?, wh

In his writing, he directed his attention to the past via texts--Ciceronean Latin and Petrarchan Italian--for their potential to transform present and future ideas. His assembly of antiquities and contemporary art served an intermediary function parallel to his study of texts. Two notable typological characteristics of the Bantu languages are the phenomena of subject and object marking, the cross-referencing of co-referential arguments via verbal morphology. The cross-linguistic variation with respect to the distributional and interpretational properties of Bantu subject and object markers has led to a dichotomy of their roles between being either agreement morphology or (incorporated) pronouns. Despite an increasing number of explanatory attempts of these phenomena, a unifying formal derivation of this inter- and intra-language variation is yet to be found. This th
