Abstract:

Populations of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring in the Charleston, SC area declined sharply during December and remained low through March and April in a two-year study (1991–92). Populations of this whitefly increased slowly during spring with highest populations on collard (Brassica) and potato. Infestations of B. argentifolii were present in 13 of 14 greenhouses at 10 commercial nurseries that were monitored. Eggs were more cold-tolerant than adults and nymphs, respectively, at temperatures of −2°, − 6°, and −10°C.

Abstract:

A survey was conducted to identify which native parasitoids of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (sweetpotato whitefly strain-B = silverleaf whitefly) are present in coastal South Carolina and to monitor their seasonal abundance. South Carolina is the northern geographic limit of year-round field populations of B. argentifolii in the eastern U.S. Yellow sticky cards were used to monitor the parasitoids. Parasitoid abundance varied over time and among five coastal South Carolina sweetpotato field locations where pesticide was not used. Five species of parasitoids were found (Encarsia pergandiella, E. nigricephala, E. strenua, E. quaintancei, and Eretmocerus sp.). The most abundant species were E. nigricephala and E. pergandiella (89% in 1993; 70% in 1994). No parasitoid fauna of B. argentifolii had heretofore been reported from fields in South Carolina. This background information will aid in developing a biological control component in a management strategy for B. argentifolii.

Abstract:

Bacteria called ‘Fritschea’ are endosymbionts of the plant-feeding whitefly Bemisia tabaci and scale insect Eriococcus spurius. In the gut of B. tabaci, these bacteria live within bacteriocyte cells that are transmitted directly from the parent to oocytes. Whiteflies cause serious economic damage to many agricultural crops; B. tabaci fecundity and host range are less than those of Bemisia argentifolii, possibly due to the presence of this endosymbiont. The B. tabaci endosymbiont has been characterized using electron microscopy and DNA analysis but has not been isolated or propagated outside of insects. The present study compared sequences for 11 endosymbiont genes to genomic data for chlamydial families Parachlamydiaceae, Chlamydiaceae and Simkaniaceae and to 16S rRNA gene signature sequences from 330 chlamydiae. We concluded that it was appropriate to propose ‘Candidatus Fritschea bemisiae’ strain Falk and ‘Candidatus Fritschea eriococci’ strain Elm as members of the family Simkaniaceae in the Chlamydiales.

Abstract:

AbstractThe effectiveness of inundative releases of the parasitoid Eretmocerus eremicus n. sp. Rose & Zolnerowich for control of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring on poinsettia in replicated experimental greenhouses was determined. We evaluated two release rates of E. eremicus: a low release rate (one female per plant per week, released in two greenhouses, in spring 1995) and a high release rate (three females per plant per week, released in two greenhouses, in spring 1994), each over a 14 week growing season. Each release trial had either one (1995) or two (1994) control greenhouses in which B. argentifolii developed on poinsettia in the absence of E. eremicus. Life-tables were constructed for B. argentifolii in the presence and absence of E. eremicus by using a photographic technique to follow cohorts of whiteflies on poinsettia leaves. Weekly population counts of whiteflies were also made. In the absence of E. eremicus, egg to adult survivorship of B. argentifolii on poinsettia was 75–81%. At the low release rate, egg to adult survivorship of B. argentifolii was 12% and parasitism was 34%. At the high release rate, egg to adult survivorship of B. argentifolii was 0.9% and parasitism was 10%. The average net reproductive rates (Ro) for populations of B. argentifolii in the absence of E. eremicus ranged from 20.5 to 26.1, indicating a rapidly increasing population density. Net reproductive rates for whitefly populations subject to parasitoid releases were 3.7 in the low release rate greenhouses, and 0.25 in the high release rate greenhouses, indicating substantially reduced B. argentifolii population growth. At week 14 of the trial, densities of immature whiteflies were lower in greenhouses at the low release rate when compared to the high release rate greenhouses. This was attributed to high levels of in-house reproduction by parasitoids at the low release rate.

Abstract:

In crosses of bifenthrin-resistant and susceptible populations of the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring or b-strain Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, we found that net reproduction (Ro) was significantly different between the parental populations and “F1, male” backcrossed populations with approximately a two-fold increase in Ro occurring in the backcrosses. Also, the level of adult emergence was positively related to the changes of Ro in B. argentifolii. The average longevity of adults, number of eggs adults oviposited, and percentage female in the progenies changed across populations, with some factors enhancing reproduction in the bifenthrin resistant backcross. These results confirm that, not only does increased vigor occur in bifenthrin-resistant whitefly backcrosses, but also that males of cross-mated females differ from males of the parent population in their ability to induce increased vigor in the backcross. This is the first evidence that whitefly males from mated and unmated females could be genetically distinct.

Abstract:

Occurrence ofBemisia Argentifoliion Chrysanthemums in Northern TanzaniaSamples of whiteflies were collected fromDendranthemaspp. in major growing areas of Tanzania. The insects were transferred onto test plants to confirm host specificity. Infested with insects, test plants were then protected with polyethylene bags. Samples of whiteflies from infested plants were taken at 10 day intervals post-infestation (dpi), 28 dpi and 35 dpi, for behavioural studies. At 10 dpi eggs were seen as oval bodies while at 28 dpi crawling bodies and newly emerged adults were observed, leaving behind characteristic shiny hollow cases. At 35 dpi, all the stages of development were seen. The features observed are typical ofBemisia argentifoliiand the area is endangered by the occurrence and spread of viruses transmitted by this species. This identification, which is an integral part of pest surveillance, initiates a study of the viruses and will lead to pest records for regulatory purposes. The international scientific and trading community is assured that the report reflects the real situation. The pest is thought to be present in the reported areas only and the pest status is actionable and under surveillance.

Abstract:

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a preferência de Bemisia argentifolii em relação a algumas plantas hospedeiras potenciais como: abobrinha, feijão, repolho, tomate, mandioca, pepino, soja, pimentão, milho, poinsétia, brócolos e berinjela. Utilizou-se a metodologia de, em testes de livre escolha, expor uma população de mosca-branca previamente criada em plantas de poinsétia, às diversas espécies botânicas. Após 48h de exposição às diferentes espécies, insetos adultos e ovos presentes nas folhas foram contados e a área foliar medida, calculando-se o número de adultos e de ovos por cm² de área foliar. Em outro experimento, após três gerações de associação de uma população de mosca-branca com berinjela, repolho e mandioca, avaliou-se a utilização destas plantas como substrato para o desenvolvimento pré-imaginal de B. argentifolii. De maneira geral, as plantas abobrinha, tomate, feijão, pepino, berinjela, repolho e soja atraíram adultos de B. argentifolii, que efetuaram posturas nestas plantas. Mandioca, milho e pimentão foram as plantas menos preferidas. Uma relação positiva entre o número de adultos presentes, a área foliar e o número de posturas, sugere que o mecanismo de escolha do hospedeiro para alimentação e abrigo do adulto, envolve a conseqüente seleção do hospedeiro para oviposição. O número de adultos e ninfas foi maior em repolho e a porcentagem de ninfas vivas foi semelhante para repolho e berinjela. Em mandioca, uma elevada porcentagem de ninfas mortas demonstra não ser esta planta adequada para a sobrevivência do inseto.

Abstract:

Cold temperatures affected the biology of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring on cabbage both directly and indirectly. Continuous chilling of 0°C and 4°C significantly increased mortality of adults and eggs. Variable daily chilling of 0°C for 6 h and then greenhouse conditions for the remainder of the day increased adult mortality but did not affect egg mortality for the 10 days of exposure. Prior plant exposure to 0°C resulted in reduced adult B. argentifolii preference and increased adult mortality. Previous 0°C and 4°C plant exposure also had an impact on within plant distribution of adults and eggs. On nonchilled and recently chilled plants, adults and eggs were found on the youngest (highest) leaves. On plants chilled at 0°C and 4°C three and five days before infestation, adults and eggs were found on lower leaves. Lower immature mortality was recorded on the nonchilled plants than on the chilled plants.

Abstract:

Acylsugars, the primary components of the exudate secreted by type IV trichomes of Lycopersicon pennellii (Corr.) D'Arcy LA716, mediate the resistance of this accession to silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, n. sp. Reduction in the settling of the adult silverleaf whiteflies correlates with the concomitant increase in applied acylsugars. Oviposition of B. argentifolii is also affected by acylsugars, resulting in a reduction in the number of eggs and nymphs found; however, acylsugars do not affect hatching of nymphs. The threshold amount of acylsugars required for deterring settling and oviposition is under the amount of acylsugars (50 to 70 μg·cm–1) required for control of other insects.

Abstract:

A mosca-branca Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, 1994 causa danos em diversas culturas de importância econômica no Brasil. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar o potencial biótico do inseto nas plantas de abobrinha, feijão, mandioca, milho, poinsétia, repolho e tomate. Os experimentos foram conduzidos na Embrapa Hortaliças, em Brasília-DF, em câmaras climatizadas, à temperatura de 28 ± 2ºC e casa de vegetação, à temperatura ambiente (25 ± 8ºC), partindo-se de uma população de B. argentifolii, criada em poinsétia desde 1995. Repolho e feijão foram as plantas hospedeiras que apresentaram períodos pré-imaginais mais curtos, respectivamente 20,5 e 21,9 dias. As maiores porcentagens de mortalidade nesses períodos foram observadas em mandioca (97,9%) e milho (94,2%). A razão sexual em geral foi favorável às fêmeas. O inseto apresentou valores muito próximos de r m (capacidade intrínseca de crescimento da população), variando de 0,18 em feijão a 0,13 em repolho, mostrando estar igualmente adaptado a estes hospedeiros. Resultados diversos foram observados em milho e mandioca, onde as fêmeas apresentaram alta mortalidade (> 90%), o que sugere baixa capacidade de utilização destes hospedeiros pela mosca-branca.

A bifenthrin-selected whitefly population, Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring, exhibited reproductive vigor in several backcrosses compared to both the bifenthrin-resistant and bifenthrin-susceptible parent populations. Net reproductive rates (R0) ranged from 5.7 to 32.9 with the highest rates occurring in populations resulting from resistant × susceptible F1 females backcrossed to males from the same resistant parent population. The genetic mechanism for increased vigor in the backcrosses of bifenthrin-resistant whiteflies is not known.

Abstract:

Bemisia argentifolii is a major pest of melon crop in key production areas of Mexico. Foliar applications of chemical insecticides for their management have been ineffective. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of commercial formulations of Beauveria bassiana and different rates for biological control of silverleaf whitefly in cantaloupe melon grown under tropical conditions. Experimental plots were treated with three rates of Mycotrol ES and only an of Naturalis-L or Endosulfan as conventional insecticide. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete-block design with four replicates. Effects of the treatments on B. argentifolii larval and adult populations and the amount of damage to the foliage and yield melon were recorded. There was not a significant difference between Mycotrol ES rates in nymphs and adults killed. Mycotrol ES, Naturalis and Endosulfan have a similar effect on nymphs and adults control. The nontreated control melon plants had significantly greater number of silverleaf whitefly nymphs and adults than Mycotrol ES, Naturalis-L and Endosulfan treatments. Also, marketable yield was lower for the nontreated control melon plants due to higher whitefly infestations. Results from this study indicate that B. bassiana use resulted in consistently lower whitefly infestations compared to the control. The field results are promising and confirmed the potential of B. bassiana as a microbial control agent against B. argentifolii in melon crop under tropical conditions.

Abstract:

A análise de RAPD foi utilizada para avaliar a variabilidade genética de 12 populações brasileiras de Bemisia spp. (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). Foram analisados dez primers que permitiram a detecção de polimorfismo entre as amostras testadas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os indivíduos analisados provenientes de uma colônia mantida desde 1983 apresentaram perfis de RAPD próximos do padrão de B. tabaci oriunda da Califórnia, EUA. As outras populações analisadas apresentaram padrões semelhantes ao de B. tabaci raça B (=B. argentifolii), também oriunda da Califórnia, EUA, indicando a grande disseminação deste último biótipo no Brasil. A análise fenética dos dados dessas populações revelou uma alta homogeneidade entre os indivíduos do biótipo B de B. tabaci.

AbstractDelphastus catalinae (Horn) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was mass reared to support field studies addressing augmentation and colonization for control of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) in southern California. Beetles were reared on B. argentifolii infested poinsettia plants grown inside greenhouses located in northern California. Potted plants, reared from rooted cuttings, were cycled through the rearing system over ca. a 12-week period, then discarded. A total of 174 245 adult beetles were harvested over a 20-week period. Each plant averaged 46 adult beetles (range 21–89) over the same period of time. Harvesting strategies were investigated using a computer simulation model based upon published and hypothesized reproduction and survivorship parameters. Results suggest that removal of approximately 50% of adults per week produced a stable and maximum production of beetles. Actual harvest rates were between 40 and 60% of available beetles. The cost of producing each adult was estimated at US$0.22, with the major cost being labor at 86% of the total.

Abstract:

The outbreak of a new whitefly was first reported in Summer 1993 at two sites in the southern part of Guam. Vegetable crops heavily damaged by this pest included cucumber, yardlong beans, and tomato. At present, the whitefly is found infesting tomato, eggplants, cucumbers, watermelon, and other vegetable crops throughout the island. The whitefly was identified as Bemisia argentifolii with the characteristics of a wide host range and the presence of silvering leaves on cucurbits. A larval parasitoid was recovered from eggplant and tomato leaves. The efficacy of pesticides against the pest is being investigated.

The relative abundance of parasitoids of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring was studied in insecticide-treated and untreated field plots of cantaloupe, collard, cucumber, and tomato. Treatments were made using foliar-applied chlorpyrifos (Lorsban®, DowElanco, Indianapolis, IN) in 1994, and foliar-applied imidacloprid (Provado®, Bayer Corporation, Kansas City, MO) in 1995 and 1996. Yellow sticky cards were used to monitor parasitoids associated with B. argentifolii in plots untreated or treated weekly in 1994 and bi-weekly in 1995 and 1996 with insecticide over 10 wks. The abundance of parasitoids varied among fields and across years. Five species of parasitoids were captured: Eretmocerus sp., Encarsia nigricephala Dozier, E. pergandiella Howard, E. quaintancei Howard, and E. strenua (Silvestri). The first three species comprised approximately 95% of the captured parasitoids. Parasitoids persisted in all field locations and crops whether the vegetables were treated or not. Parasitoids were captured in the treated plots throughout the study, although in fewer numbers than in the untreated plots. Overall, about 60 to 70% of parasitoids captured were from plots without insecticide. Whitefly captures on the sticky traps were relatively high in collard compared with the other crops studied. In addition, more E. nigricephala and E. pergandiella were collected in collard than in the other vegetable crops.

Abstract:

Feeding nymphs of the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii (formerly known as Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, B strain), cause a physiological disorder known as squash silverleaf (SSL) in summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.). This disorder is characterized by a progressive silvering on the upper leaf surface caused by the development of large air spaces between the palisade mesophyll cells and the adaxial epidermis. Severely symptomatic plants can exhibit stunting and fruit yield reduction. A University of Florida C. pepo breeding line, designated Zuc76, confers resistance to this disorder and its inheritance was characterized. Data from F1, F2, and backcross progeny from crossing a SSL disorder-susceptible zucchini squash (C. pepo) with Zuc76 indicated resistance is conferred by a single recessive gene. Determining the mode of inheritance of SSL disorder resistance found in Zuc76 will contribute to future studies to develop SSL disorder-resistant C. pepo cultivars with superior horticultural potential.
