Abstract:
This book looks at representatives of the top 0.1 per cent of Russian society: their stories, trajectories, ideas about life, and how they see their role and position at the top of Russian society. They are explored through their own stories: eighty interviews with multimillionaires and billionaires, and their spouses and children, conducted between 2008 and 2017. These people grew up and lived through a historically unique period of economic turmoil and social change following the collapse of the Soviet Union. When taken in a wider historical context, however, we see the repetition of a time-honored process whereby new money becomes respectable money. Rich Russians applies the sociological frameworks of Max Weber and Pierre Bourdieu in substantiating the claim that bourgeois Russians have acquired all sorts of cultural and social resources that help consolidate their power individually and as a group. They have elaborated more distinguished and refined tastes, rediscovered their family history, and begun actively engaging in philanthropy. Most importantly, they have worked out a narrative for themselves justifying why they deserve their elitist position in society—because of who they are and their superior qualities over others—and why they should be treated as equals by the West. This new, empirically grounded research helps us to understand the Russian bourgeois elite and its increasingly complex relations with Western societies.

Abstract:
In this chapter the authors further explore how public attitudes about inequality shape support for redistributive tax policies by taking advantage of Washington State’s highly redistributive initiative Proposition 1098. This proposal, dubbed the millionaire’s tax, allowed citizens to vote directly to increase taxes on the wealthy, in the context of a policy debate that very much focused on the growth of income inequality. This episode provides us a rare opportunity to understand how inequality shapes individual voter attitudes toward redistribution and increasing taxes on the wealthy in the context of specific policy debates in which discussion of inequality features prominently, which has been very rare in recent decades. While most states are unlikely adopt highly progressive tax policy in the near future, the authors show that recent trends in initiative states to push for higher taxes on the rich can provide insight into the future of state tax policy.

Nolan, Brian, ed. Inequality and Inclusive Growth in Rich Countries. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198807032.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book addresses the central challenge facing rich countries: how to promote growth and prosperity that is widely shared rather than concentrated at the top. Rising inequality in income and wealth across the rich-world members of the OECD has been widely recognized and identified as a major concern; this book links this phenomenon with stagnation in wages and incomes for ordinary working households, which are also increasingly seen as threatening social and political stability. The book aims to identify what structures and policies are associated with success or failure in limiting the rise in inequality and promoting income growth for those in the middle and lower reaches of the income distribution. It does so by analysing the varying experiences of ten rich countries over recent decades in depth, through a common analytical lens. This brings out that there are indeed responses that governments and societies can adopt, stagnation and rising do not have to be accepted but can be combatted given the political will and capacity.

Jubin, Olaf. Tim Rice. Edited by Robert Gordon and Olaf Jubin. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199988747.013.21.

Abstract:
Although his major passion has always been pop music, Tim Rice is in certain respects the most successful British lyricist in musical theatre history. But what exactly is a ‘Tim Rice musical’? It turns out that the lyricist with a unique voice is most prominently at work in those musicals which he conceived himself and which investigate themes such as the plight of individuals who stand out from the crowd because of their talent and the way they are treated by the people that admire them—or tear them down. This ‘pop star scenario’ also addresses such aspects as the unpredictable behaviour of the crowd, the discrepancy between public and private image, the danger that the latter will be consumed by the former, personal ambition and its price, as well as the dissatisfaction and potential downfall that follows after early success.

Stokes, Dustin. Rich Perceptual Content and Aesthetic Properties. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786054.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
Both common sense and dominant traditions in art criticism and philosophical aesthetics maintain that aesthetic features or properties are perceived. However, there are many reasons to be sceptical of this. This chapter defends the thesis—that aesthetic properties are sometimes represented in perceptual experience—against one of those sceptical opponents who maintains that perception represents only low-level properties, and since all theorists agree that aesthetic properties are not low-level properties, perception does not represent aesthetic properties. This chapter offers a novel argument—the argument from seeing-as—against that sceptic which moves from consideration of ambiguous figures to consideration of visual art, concluding that aesthetic properties are sometimes perceived and delivers a general lesson for philosophy of perception. Contrary to extant theories of rich perceptual content, aesthetic properties are better candidates for high-level perceptual contents than standardly theorized rich contents like natural kinds.
