Full textThe problem of homeless social integration into society is analyzed in this work. This problem occurred in Lithuania after regaining independency and reforming planar economy into market economy. After sudden economical and social changes production recession showed up, increased unemployment and decreased living standards. As a result part of a society didn’t manage to adapt to changes taking place, therefore a new phenomenon appeared – homeless subculture. Got into this subculture it’s very hard to get out because people adapt and even become accustomed to such life. Homeless have lost their social and professional skills, they can’t resolve their problems on their own, can’t avail of public sector afforded services. Problem of homelessness is topical and studied little in Lithuania. Little attention is given to this problem, there’s lack of objective and reliable information. There is laws released regulating integration of different social groups into society: individuals, which returned from prison, the disabled, risk group families, refugees. However homeless becomes individuals belonging to all social groups, that’s why they should be pointed out as separate group whose social integration was regulated by separate laws. Objective of this work is to analyze possibilities of homeless social integration into society. Tasks: 1. To study phenomenon of homelessness and its origin of cause. 2. Examine homeless social integration implementation principles and ways. 3... [to full text]

Full textDescriptions of the Somali dialects include a variation in vowel quality and duration, between southern Somali (Benadiri) and northern Somali. Native speakers of Somali confirm noted variations and describe a possessive ending eey in Benadiri, different from the northern Somali equivalent ay. This survey aimed to investigate if, and how, vowel quality and duration vary in the diphthong ay in southern Somali and northern Somali. This study was limited to measuring vowel quality and duration of the possessive ending -ay. Values of F1 and F2 in the initial phase of the diphthong, as well as the duration, were measured in pronunciations, which native speakers have labeled as northern or southern respectively. The measured differences in vowel quality were in line with the expectations. Mean values of F1 and F2 were lower/higher in all measuring groups for the pronunciations labeled as southern, than for those labeled as northern. It was noted, however, that the distance between the diphthongs in northern and southern Somali, was significantly larger in the word aabahay than in hooyaday. The reason for this should be investigated further, focusing on contextual differences. The expected difference in duration between the southern and northern pronunciations could not be found.

Full textCare for and rights protection of homeless animals are the pressing problems of today’s World. The attitudes of EU members towards homeless animals do differ depending on national policies and legislation, local traditions, history and culture. The problem of homeless animals’ excessive reproduction is recognised at some level but not yet globally. Society is ready to care and protect homeless animals, which shows the level of its consciousness and responsibility. The purpose of this master’s work is to analyze the issues concerning the rights and protection of homeless animals; define the root of the problems and suggest the solutions relying on the expertise of Lithuanian specialists who work for the animal welfare, and incorporating the successful experience of EU countries. The literature of both foreign and Lithuanian authors has been studied in the project in order to help to indicate and set the tasks for this work and to support the validity of choosing the topic. In order to evaluate the efficiency of regulations concerning the welfare and rights of homeless animals, the analysis of legal (and other types) documents of Lithuanian Republic, European Union, United Kingdom and German Federation has been undertaken. The information gathered from observing the activity of the administrative and public structures as well as the experience of problem-solving in the EU and summarizing the views of Lithuanian experts have all supported the hypothesis that the problems of... Full textIn the heart, fibroblasts represent the major cell type. They contribute to the production of the extracellular matrix. Cardiac remodelling during pathological injury is associated with differenciation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. The aim of this study was to characterize at molecular and functional levels a new K conductance in these cells. Among K channel transcripts which were screened by high-throughput real-time PCR, SUR2 and Kir6. 1 mRNAs were found to be the most abundant. Western-blots showed that SUR2 and Kir6. 1 protein expression levels increased with culture duration as fibroblasts differenciated into myofibroblasts. In the inside-out configuration of the patch-clamp technique, SUR2/Kir6. 1 K channels were recorded and showed insensitivity to ATP, inhibition by glibenclamide and activation by pinacidil and UDP. These properties are similar to those reported by Yamada et al (1998) for the SUR2/Kir6. 1 molecular signature. In the whole cell configuration, these channels gave rise to a macroscopic glibenclamide-sensitive current which was activated by pinacidil and which amplitude increased with culture duration. This current was also activated by the endogenous sphingolipid sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) at the nM concentration range. The activation of this current was found to stimulate cell proliferation and to decrease IL-6 and collagen secretion. All these functional effects occurred for culture duration greater than 5 days. In conclusion this work shows for the first time the presence of a glibenclamide-sensitive current which appears during differenciation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. This SUR2/Kir6. 1 current, which may be activated in pathological conditions where fibroblasts differentiate into myofibroblasts and where S1P level increases, may modulate cardiac ventricular function
Mendes, Giovana Oliveira.

Full textThe bachelor thesis examines the institutional expression of power of the social organizations of the homeless in Hungary – Szeged and Lithuania – Siauliai. The paper analyzes the formation of the public policies, the functioning of social institutions and their influence on a human being; it also analyzes the concept of power and its means of expression. Since the power to control exists within every institution, the empirical part of the research examines this expression of power of Social workers code of ethics; it is being established that the power to control manifests in social organizations of the homeless. It was determined that the institutional expression of power is beginning to be formed in the Social workers code of ethics, in which the homeless are formed as dependent on social workers. In the social organizations of the homeless the institutional expression of power is detected in every implemented activity of the organization.

Full textThe problem of homelessness, the complexity of the limits of homelessness concept and the difference in defining it in the EU countries are analysed in this Master’s thesis. The policy on homelessness carried out in Lithuania and EU countries is also dealt with in it. In the first part of the thesis, the literature of foreign and Lithuanian authors on the subject is explored It helps to make the tasks of the work more precise, to corroborate the validity of the theme, to state the sufficiency of the target explored. The causes of homelessness and the process of becoming a homeless are analysed as well, the problem of the concept of homelessness and the classification of the homeless are disclosed here too. The second part explores the sources of the EU policy and its development in the context of homelessness, and the EU strategies that are in progress to diminish poverty and homelessness are described. The indices of poverty risk level as reported by the EUROSTAT in 2009 and 2010 are analysed and compared. The third part of the thesis deals with the Lithuania’s social policy in the context of homelessness, its sources and development, the strategies and projects in progress in Lithuania to diminish homelessness. Also, the indices in years 2010 and 2011 on poverty risks are presented and compared according to the data of the Statistics Department of Lithuania. The fourth part presents the results of the empiric research: the character of work, the goals of the activities and... [to full text]

Full textThis dissertation presents the analysis of three letters, written by Olga Benario and addressed to Luiz Carlos Prestes, during the period when she was imprisoned in Nazi Germany of Adolf Hitler, and he in dictatorial Brazil of Getúlio Vargas. Understanding the importance of epistolary writing, especially when it becomes the only form of communication, we seek to find Olga profile brands that escape existing stereotypical view in the popular imagination. For this, we analyzed the letters from the perspective of war, love, and readings that Benario did, alongside his life, and records in the space of reflection that the letter provides. The proposal is to allow, through writing own Olga Benario, find his reflections, anguish and desires. Therefore, base us in theoretical as Alfredo Bosi, Leonor Arfuch, Maria Luiza Tucci Carneiro, Martin Gilbert, Peter Gay, Primo Levi, Silvina Rodrigues Lopes, Tzvetan Todorov, among others.

Full textSingh, Asheel. "Assessing anti-natalism : a philosophical examination of the morality of procreation." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8288.
Full textConsider a couple planning to have children. There are many reasons one could offer these potential parents for reconsidering bringing new people into existence. One could for instance say to them that they currently lack the finances, or maturity, to adequately take care of any children they produce. If it were almost certain that this couple would pass on a terrible genetic disease to their offspring, one could see it as one’s duty to warn them against reproduction. One could even draw attention to the plight of orphans, and suggest to these (and other) potential parents that a more pressing responsibility lies not in planning to give homes to persons not yet in existence, but in attempting to give homes to those already in existence. However, when deciding whether or not to create children, rarely does one consider, over and above the preceding considerations, whether there might be some fundamental wrongness to the very act of procreation. In other words, rarely does one consider the possibility that creating people might, all things considered, never be permissible. At its extreme, “anti-natalism” implies the view that coming into existence is always a harm that outweighs any of its benefits. This position is defended by David Benatar (Benatar 1997, 2006). However, one need not believe that coming into existence is always an overall harm in order to favour an anti-natal perspective; one need only believe that it is morally problematic to inflict serious, preventable harms upon others without their consent. Such a consent-based anti-natal position can be derived from the argument put forth by Seana Shiffrin (1999). To be clear, according to either of these versions of anti-natalism, creating a new person is considered an impermissible harm. When I refer to “anti-natalism” in this dissertation, I will be referring to this negative judgement regarding procreation. Anti-natalism has a rich philosophical heritage, with its roots stretching back to antiquity. For instance, Ecclesiastes (1:1-18) of the Hebrew Bible bemoans the apparent meaninglessness and futility of existence—a state of affairs with which any number of generations of humans must cope. Not until very recently, however, has the anti-natal position been given due consideration by philosophers. Arthur Schopenhauer (1851), for instance, is perhaps best known for advocating a pessimistic philosophy that is, broadly speaking, anti-natal in its implications. The key figure in this field, however, is Benatar, who defends an unequivocally anti-natal position.
