Abstract:
In this article, we explore the efficacy of sport as an instrument for social inclusion through an analysis of the film Bend it Like Beckham. The film argues for the potential of sport to foster a more inclusive society in terms of multiculturalism and gender equity by showing how a hybrid culture can be forged through the microcosm of an English young women’s football club, while simultaneously challenging assumptions about traditional masculinities and femininities. Yet, despite appearances, Bend it Like Beckham does little to challenge the structure of English society. Ultimately, the version of multiculturalism offered by the film is one of assimilation to a utopian English norm. This conception appears progressive in its availability to all Britons regardless of ethnicity, but falls short of conceptions of hybrid identity that do not privilege one hegemonic culture over others. Likewise, although the film presents a feminist veneer, underneath lurks a troubling reassertion of the value of chastity, masculinity, and patriarchy. Bend it Like Beckham thus provides an instructive case study for the potential of sport as a site of social inclusion because it reveals how seductive it is to imagine that structural inequalities can be overcome through involvement in teams.

Abstract:
FQ columnist Bilal Qureshi compares two seemingly similar summer movies: Gurinder Chadha's Blinded by the Light and Danny Boyle's Yesterday, both of which feature music-obsessed South Asian male leads. However, while Boyle's film adopts a race-blind perspective, promoting a vision (or fantasy) of a multiracial Britain of friendships and intimacy, in Blinded by the Light, Chadha pushes her long-standing interest in race and multiculturalism beyond the feel-good sensibilities of her earlier hit, Bend it Like Beckham. Instead, Qureshi argues, Chadha has made a subversively political film, bristling with an urgent plea for empathy, inspired by the blinding xenophobia of Brexit.

Abstract:
The distribution and propagation of rock cracks have a significant impact on geotechnical engineering. Taking rock-like materials with bent cracks as the research object, the particle flow code in two dimensions numerical simulation method was used to study the impact of the bend number on rock-like materials strength and crack evolution. According to the results, when the bend number was 1, 3, and 7, the strength of the specimens gradually increased; the elasticity modulus did not change significantly with the crack bend number. Uniaxial compression generated tensile cracks in all the specimens with bent cracks, but in terms of failure mode, the specimens with 0 bend tended to suffer penetrating failure along the fracture strike, while the specimens with 1, 3, and 7 bend tended to suffer penetrating failure along the diagonal direction. Both the fractal dimension and bend number were positively correlated with strain; with the gradual increase of the stress percentage, the damage variable of the specimens gradually increased at a growing rate. The research results provide a reference for predicting the stability of the underground engineering surrounding rocks containing bent cracks.

Abstract:
A detailed numerical study of low-loss silicon on insulator (SOI) waveguide bend is presented using the fully three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The geometrical parameters are optimized to minimize the bending loss over a range of frequencies. Transmission results for the conventional single bend and photonic crystal assisted SOI waveguide bend are compared. Calculations are performed for the transmission values of TE-like modes where the electric field is strongly transverse to the direction of propagation. The best obtained transmission is over 95% for TE-like modes.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the institutional background and the incentive for FIFA executives to engage in corrupt activities. The authors also highlight recent FIFA scandals and discuss approaches that may affect FIFA’s corruption in the future. Design/methodology/approach The authors approach this subject through a historical narrative. The authors review the literature on corruption and apply these findings to the FIFA organization. Due to many similarities, the authors are able to juxtapose the successes and failures of the Olympics, and apply these findings to FIFA. Findings Based on the examination, the authors find that FIFA’s corruption can be mitigated, but it is a very difficult task to accomplish. The US Department of Justice has helped to jump start a corruption reform in FIFA. This has also facilitated the activities of the FIFA ethics committee. However, only time will tell whether these changes will be meaningful and last. Originality/value The contribution is that the authors closely link the sports management and economics literature on corruption using FIFA as the subject of analysis. Because of the recent FIFA scandal, the authors are able to update the corruption literature as it applies to this organization and, more generally, in sports.

Abstract:
Gravitational bending of light is a spectacular prediction of Einstein's general relativity, tested and observed in numerous situations. We examine the fine structure of gravitational bending in new light to obtain insights pertaining to some deep links between gravity and quantum mechanics. The new results include quantum-theoretical interpretation of part of the light bending, making a good case for gravity encompassing wave–particle duality, perhaps a new insight for quantum gravity itself. We reiterate the mutual compatibility of the equivalence principle and quantum dynamics in a simple proof. Finally, we address certain unresolved issues regarding the gravitational bending of ultraslow light and tunneling photons in the context of experiments that might pose fresh challenges for the interface of the two century-old theories.

Abstract:
H beam welds along rolling and transverse direction were investigated with nondestructive testing, mechanical testing and microstructural analysis. Crack and fracture occurred, during guided bend testing, in the specimens welded along rolling direction between flanges of the H beams with higher S content although no defect was detected prior to the bend test. The fracture seemed to be lamellar tearing because of step-like fracture propagation and terrace and wall fracture appearance of the ruptured bend test specimen. On top of this, lamellar tear was already created in the base metal area near the HAZ before the bend test in microstructural analysis on the welds. It seems that lamellar tearing occurred in the specimens welded along rolling direction between flanges of the H beams with higher S content as cracks were formed and propagated into a ferrite phase region in α-γ band structure in combination with low ductility in transverse direction due to MnS inclusions elongated along rolling direction.

Abstract:
For straightening of low-rigid cylindrical details like shaft and axes different types of loadings are considered which form tension different in size and in distribution. As the perspective direction, it is possible to consider correction by a bend at the influence of the distributed loading with the subsequent hardening of a billet by superficial plastic deformation based on a cross cheesing of it by flat plates. Purpose of the work was to define tension of the billet at cross correction for the choice of more effective type of loading and processing rational modes. The mathematical apparatus was used based on laws of the theory of an elastoplastic solid and Ansys Workbench software package. Novelty is the research of effective methods of loading at cross correction of cylindrical details. As a result of analytical calculations, value of the residual tension providing correction of cylindrical details was determined. Residual tension necessary for correction of cylindrical details depends on an initial deflection, material and preparation rate. Tension of cylindrical details was defined depending on a type of the application of cross loadings. Bend tension for correction of a shaft at distributed loading is less, than tension from action of cross force. For correction of a shaft with a diameter of 10 mm, 200 mm long and an initial deflection of 0.5 mm it is necessary to create bend tension equal to about 370 MPa. An effective method of loading at cross correction of cylindrical details is the bend at influence of the distributed loading. The received extreme values of bend coefficients are from 5.3 to 5.5 for all cases of shaft rigidity at correction by cross bend at distributed loading with l/L relation equal to 0.8. The developed mathematical model gives quite reliable values of the residual tension providing correction of cylindrical details. The analytical dependence for determination of the size of general deflections and definition of an effective loading type can be recommended for practical use in production for achievement of precision accuracy of low-rigid details like shaft.

Many researchers have been working on snake-like robots due to their flexibility, safety and dexterity. Traditional robots have rigid underlying structures that limit their ability to interact with their environment. In this work, soft robot is developed using three links of the flexible soft actuator connected by rubber joints. The actuators are fabricated using silicon Silastic P-1 where each actuator link consists of two semi-circular chambers and are reinforced with fibers. Fabrication process from CAD design, mold fabrication and validation with simulation and experiment is presented. The fabricated actuators can bend at 27.5o with maximum pressure of 180 kPa.

Abstract:
An experimental investigation is carried out to study the effect of several turn treatments like single guide vane (short and long) and multiple guide vanes on the pressure drop distribution in a square cross-sectioned smooth channel with a sharp 180° bend. The sharp 180° turn is obtained by dividing a rectangular passage into two square channels using a divider wall with a rounded tip at the location where the flow negotiates the turn. The study is carried out for a divider wall thickness to hydraulic diameter(W/D)of 0.2 for Reynolds numbers of 13,500 and 17,000. The pressure drop distribution normalized with the mainstream fluid dynamic pressure head is presented for the outer surfaces. The results indicate that the shape and position of the guide vanes significantly affect the pressure losses associated with coolant flows through a sharp 180° bend. Properly shaped 180° vanes located in the center of the bend decrease the overall pressure drop by as much as 40–45% compared to the no guide vane within the bend.

Abstract:
A new Filtered Cathodic Vacuum Arc coating system with a magnetic macroparticle filter design consisting of an off-plane double-bend (OPDB) filter is described. The transport of the vacuum arc plasma through this OPDB filter is investigated using Langmuir and deposition probes. Films of amorphous hard carbon have been deposited a 90° single bend and the OPDB filter and the macroparticle contents of the films are compared. The experimental results were found to be in good agreement with the simulations results based on an improved drift approximation model. The results demonstrate the OPDB filter has a relatively better transmission efficiency than the 90° single bend filter, lower macroparticle counts and is suitable for preparation of diamond-like carbon coatings with high quality. Some important applications of the ta-C coating produced by using the new FCVA system have been identified and where applicable industrial testing results are presented.
