Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the knowledge level of beneficiary and non-beneficiary farmers regarding chickpea cultivation technologies demonstrated under the Cluster Front Line Demonstration (CFLD) program in Bikaner district, Rajasthan. A total of 200 farmers were selected, comprising 100 beneficiary farmers who had participated in CFLD activities and received relevant training, and 100 non-beneficiary farmers who had been cultivating chickpea independently for at least five years. Data were collected using structured interview schedules, and knowledge levels were assessed based on a knowledge test. The findings revealed that a majority (69%) of beneficiary farmers had medium-level knowledge, followed by 25% with high-level knowledge, and only 6% with low-level knowledge. In contrast, 55% of non-beneficiary farmers had medium-level knowledge, 36% had low-level knowledge, and only 9% had high-level knowledge. The data indicated a clear impact of CFLD training, as beneficiary farmers exhibited higher knowledge in areas such as harvesting, sowing time, improved varieties, and seed treatment. The study also highlighted significant knowledge gaps in certain aspects, particularly among non-beneficiary farmers. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in knowledge levels between the two groups, particularly in nine key aspects of chickpea cultivation. The study concluded that CFLD programs significantly enhance farmers' knowledge, and recommended expanding the program's reach, improving training strategies, and utilizing modern communication tools to further boost knowledge dissemination.

Abstract:
Knowledge on farming practices helps in implementing the best practices in the farm to improve the production system to get higher returns by the farmers. Krishi Vigyan Kendras are the knowledge network centres with district as jurisdiction. Due to the limited availability of knowledge tests to measure the knowledge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra KVK beneficiary farmers on farming practices, an attempt had been made to develop a test for measuring knowledge of KVK beneficiary farmers on farming practices. For this purpose, pertinent items were collected covering all aspects of farming practices. After getting jury opinion on the items of test, the item difficulty index, item discrimination index and point bi-serial correlation were worked out. Thirty eight statements were finally selected from 60 statements to measure the knowledge of KVK beneficiary farmers on farming practices. To administer the knowledge testa score of one was given for each correct answer and zero was given for a wrong answer. Thus the standardized knowledge test developed in this study can be used to measure the knowledge of beneficiary farmers by any KVK and the respondents can be categorized into low, medium and high groups based on the mean and standard deviation.

Abstract:
Agriculture is the most pivotal sector of Indian economy in the current phase of development. There is need for transfer of improved agricultural technology from research station to the farmer’s field. The ICAR mooted the idea of establishing KVK for imparting vocational training to the farmers and field level extension functionaries. The present study was conceived with measuring the impact of KVK in terms of knowledge of farmers about potato production technology in Deesa KVK of Banaskantha district of Gujarat State. For research study, from seven talukas of KVK, Banaskantha-I (Deesa) four taluka and total twelve villages from each selected talukas was purposively selected on the basis of maximum numbers of activities carried out by KVK, Deesa. From each selected villages 10 beneficiary and 10 non beneficiary potato growers were selected randomly. Thus, 120 beneficiary and 120 non beneficiary potato growers were selected for the study. Ex-post facto research design was used for this study. Results of the investigating showed that nearly three-fifths (57.50%) of the beneficiary farmers had medium level of knowledge followed by 25.00 per cent with high and 17.50 per cent with low level of knowledge about potato production technology. Whereas, half (50.00%) of the non beneficiary farmers had medium level of knowledge, whereas remaining 31.67 per cent and 18.33 per cent of non beneficiary farmers had low and high level of knowledge about potato production technology, respectively.

Abstract:
National Food Security Mission (NFSM) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched in 2007-08, with mission aims to increasing the productivity at the individual farmers through the adoption of improved technologies and farming practices. To assess the effectiveness of the NFSM-pluses in Rajasthan state the chickpea crop is select for this study because India is the single largest producer of chickpea in the world and it is called as King of Pulses. The study was conducted in two Agro-climatic zones of the Rajasthan state i.e. Ic (Hyper arid partial irrigated) and zone IIIa (Semi-arid eastern plains). From these zones 120 Beneficiary Farmers (BFs) and 120 Non-beneficiary Farmers (NBFs) were selected randomly from selected village. Thus, total sample size of 240 respondents. The findings of study shows that majority of beneficiary farmers (46.67%) and non-beneficiary farmers (40 per cent) had medium knowledge level about recommended package of practices of chickpea. According to practice wise extent of knowledge it was found that both BFs and NBFs possessed maximum knowledge level for practice like Time of sowing with (91.53 MPS & 74.03 MPS) and assigned first rank while last rank order assigned for the practices like Physiological aspects (59.50MPS), Plant protection measures (42.25 MPS) and Weed management due to lack of knowledge, its complexity and risky application to the crop. The comparative data related to extent level of knowledge between BFs and NBFs show significance difference in all packages of practice of chickpea cultivation except the Irrigation Management show good impact of NFSM on change in knowledge level of beneficiary farmers of both Agro-climatic zones. The value of rank correlation (rs) was 0.61 which shows positive rank correlation between beneficiary and non-beneficiary farmer’s knowledge level.

Studien visar även på en slående avsaknad av källkritik då konsumenter utvärderar nyckelhålsprodukter.<br>The purpose with this study is to illustrate if the keyhole-symbol of food products has an impact on consumers view on, and choice of food product. This study will also illuminate if the consumers reasoning is critical of the sources. Fifty interviews were applied. The study shows that the keywhole-symbole has a positive influence on respondent's perception of healthiness and on likelihood to buy the product. The study also shows striking results int the absence of critical thinking about the sources.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中興大學<br>企業管理學系所<br>107<br>Social media has become an important platform for people to communicate and cooperate in life. Social media is inseparable from our daily lives. In addition to personal usage, more and more companies apply social media to acquire the information and knowledge provided by customers. Through the customer knowledge involvement via the social media, firms can acquire information and ideas shared by customers and knowing the potential needs of customers. Therefore, customer knowledge involvement could constitute the nutrients for the company to innovate in the age of open innovation. As the increasing of customer knowledge involvement in the social media contexts, this study aims to understand the factors to facilitate customer knowledge involvement, and the influence of customer knowledge involvement. The main purpose of this study is to explore market orientation (responsive market orientation/proactive market orientation), social media capabilities (external social media capabilities/internal social media capabilities), customer knowledge engagement (customer involvement as information source, customer involvement as co-developers, customer involvement as innovators) and the relationships among firm’s innovation (incremental innovation/radical innovation). Our data is collected from the the winner of the "2017 and 2018 D&B TOP 1000 Elite SME Award" that selected by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. A total of 1936 questionnaires were sent out and 193 valid questionnaires were collected. The effective questionnaire response rate was 9.9%. The empirical results of this study show that customer knowledge involvement has a positive impact on innovation. Both the market orientation and social media capabilities have positive impact on customer knowledge involvement and innovation. Further analysis found that among the three types of customer knowledge involvement, customer involvement as innovators has the greatest impact on innovation. Responsive market orientation has greater impact on incremental innovation, while proactive market orientation has greater impact on customer knowledge involvement and radical innovation. In terms of social media capabilities, internal social media capabilities have a significant impact on innovation and customer involvement as co-developers and customer involvement as innovators.

Abstract:
The monograph reveals the key socio-economic problems of the innovation economy: its content as a knowledge economy and its role in evolutionary development; human capital (living intelligence) as the main resource of the innovation economy. Much attention is paid to the institutional support of innovation through a system of institutions and mutually beneficial contracts. The mixed mechanism of implementation of innovative activity as a synthesis of spontaneous market self-regulation and conscious public administration is shown. The result of the "social control" of society and the state is the coordination of the actions of economic entities and the ordering of economic processes.&#x0D; The most important institution of human society is the family as a strong power in the state. And the person himself with his knowledge, culture, ethics and morality is the main value of society. The main purpose of the family is to reproduce life and provide a person with everything necessary. The state as an institution manages a person's education and health, helps to change his lifestyle, strengthening humanity, ethics, morality and culture of life.&#x0D; The modern global economy remains a sphere of domination of market egoism. It is the market that performs the function of morality as a person and society as a whole. In the global economy, a person is not a representative of the people, but a representative of the system, a standard way of life. And he should live in communication based on respect for each other.&#x0D; It is concluded that today the main wealth of society is not material, but social wealth: the person himself with his knowledge, culture, ethics and morality is a living intellect; a family with the reproduction of life; immaterial knowledge that covers all types of work that cannot be calculated and paid, where the motive is the joy of free cooperation, free giving and community. In this "invisible economy" people mutually teach each other humanity and create a culture of joint thinking and living together. The State and society must preserve and increase the social wealth of human society.&#x0D; For students and postgraduates of economic and managerial specialties, as well as for anyone interested in this problem.

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, internationalisation has become key for institutions wishing to secure funding for higher education and research. For the academic community, this strategic shift has had many consequences. Priorities have changed and been influenced by new ways of thinking about universities, and of measuring their impact in relation to each other and to their social goals. Debates are ongoing and hotly contested. In this collection, a mix of renowned academics and newer voices reflect on some of the realities of international research partnerships. They both question and highlight the agency of academics, donors and research institutions in the geopolitics of knowledge and power. The contributors offer fresh insights on institutional transformation, the setting of research agendas, and access to research funding, while highlighting the dilemmas researchers face when their institutions are vulnerable to state and donor influence. Offering a range of perspectives on why academics should collaborate and what for, this book will be useful to anyone interested in how scholars are adapting to the realities of international networking and how research institutions are finding innovative ways to make NorthSouth partnerships and collaborations increasingly fair, sustainable and mutually beneficial.

Abstract:
Without assuming prior legal knowledge, books in the Directions series introduce and guide readers through key points of law and legal debate. Questions, diagrams and exercises help readers to engage fully with each subject and check their understanding as they progress. This book explains the key topics covered on equity and trusts courses. The content of the text is designed to emphasise the relationship between equity, trusts, property, contract and restitution to enable students to map out conceptual connections between related legal ideas. There is also a focus on modern cases in the commercial sphere to reflect the constantly changing and socially significant role of trusts and equity. The book starts by introducing equity and trusts. It then includes a chapter on understanding trusts, and moves on to consider capacity and formality requirements, certainty requirements and the constitution of trusts. Various types of trusts are then examined such as purpose, charitable, and variation trusts. The book then describes issues related to trusteeship. Breach of trust is explained, as is informal trusts of land. There is a chapter on tracing, and then the book concludes by looking at equitable liability of strangers to trust and equitable doctrines and remedies. This new edition includes coverage of significant recent cases, including the Supreme Court decision on interest to be paid by tax authorities on monies owed; the Supreme Court decision on the test of dishonesty applicable to civil matters; the Privy Council decision on the division of investment property acquired by cohabitants; the Court of Appeal decisions on Quistclose trusts; fiduciary duties in arms-length contracts; transactions prejudicing creditors; beneficiary anonymity in variation of trust cases; exemption clauses; discretion exercised beyond trustee’s authority; implications of GDPR for trustee disclosures; trustee personal liability; causation and equitable compensation; statutory relief for a professional trustee’s breach of trust; use of proprietary estoppel to reward work undertaken in farming families; costs of seeking court’s directions; injunctions ordered against persons unknown; equitable jurisdiction to rectify agreements.

Abstract:
Abstract Digital twins appeared under four different names on the Gartner’s hype cycle of emerging technologies—as digital twins for business (2018), digital twins of government (2019), digital twins of a human (2021), and digital twin of a citizen (2022). Digital twins of government come closest to exemplifying digital twins for urban governance, however it doesn’t mean that the public sector is the technology’s sole user or beneficiary. Policymakers are just one of several urban stakeholders that leverage digital twins to achieve their objectives. Architects are using digital twins to create optimal designs to comply with planning regulations. Property developers take advantage of the model-based submission process to expedite an approval by a building authority. Construction professionals see digital twins as an opportunity to better manage on-site operations and de-risk digging. For utility companies, digital twins provide a means to prepare for and mitigate the impact of emergencies when they happen, such as sewage spills or flooding. The pool of use cases has grown substantially over the years. Even so, with an impressive body of knowledge accumulated to date, we barely scratch the surface of what is possible with digital twins. By incorporating a broader spectrum of elements that shape urban dynamics, digital twins have the potential to represent urban reality more holistically than is currently the case. Once more dimensions start getting added to complement a physical city, it may be more appropriate to talk not of digital twins but of digital multiples, such as triplets (with social dimension included), quadruplets (plus cultural), or quintuplets (plus political). It’s this enhanced representational capacity combined with the ability to change local reality through a two-way synchronisation with the physical world that separates digital twins from other e-governance tools like Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) or Building Information Models (BIM). That said, the road ahead is far from smooth as there are a number of challenges and challengers to the concept. The paper discusses them and provides a critical reflection on how digital twins can evolve to remain relevant in the future.

Abstract:
AbstractSophisticated applications in natural language processing, such as conversational agents, often need to be able to generalize across a range of different tasks to generate natural-feeling language. In this paper, we introduce a model that aims to improve generalizability with regard to different tasks by combining the original input with the output of a task-specific expert. Through a combination mechanism, we create a new representation that has been enriched with the information given by the expert. These enriched representations then serve as input to a downstream model. We test three different combination mechanisms in two combination paradigms and evaluate the performance of the new enriched representation in a simple encoder-decoder model. We show that even very simple combination mechanisms are able to significantly improve performance of the downstream model. This means that the encoded expert information is transported through the new enriched input representation, leading to a beneficial impact on performance within the task domain. This opens the way for exciting future endeavors such as testing performance on different task domains and the combination of multiple experts.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is an increasing pressure on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to produce societally relevant and impactful research, and to actively engage with non-academic stakeholders who are looking for answers to their challenges. This is a special challenge for social sciences, such as business, management, entrepreneurship, as opposed to natural sciences that rely largely on quantifiable data and statistics. The present chapter addresses this challenge and introduces the dimensions of societal impact of research produced by HEIs and describes the mechanism through which HEIs can provide impactful research needed for economic competitiveness and societal well-being. Illustrations are offered on how HEIs can boost their ability to transform the results of academic and applied research into beneficial knowledge and management practice for stakeholders, including business, industry, economy and civil society at large. The chapter sheds light on how to reinforce collaboration with non-academic stakeholders and partners within research and innovation ecosystems. To support the HEI’s work, a framework for managing research with societal impact in HEIs is proposed.

Abstract:
Agriculture contributes a fifth of the greenhouse gas emissions on earth. To help reduce this large ecological footprint, there is the need for collaborative efforts aimed at increasing farmers' environmental consciousness. This chapter used the ladder of participation as a framework to assess how knowledge co-creation between local farmers in Ghana's Upper West Region and NGO agro-technocrats is associated with farmers' environmental consciousness. Using an exploratory sequential mixed method design, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with NGO officers and beneficiary farmers. Probability sampling was then used to select 1,050 beneficiary farmers for interviews and analysed using descriptive statistics and logistic regressions. Results show that the use of robust categories of participation were associated with farmers' increased likelihood of adopting most of the environmentally conscious practices co-created. Conversely, less robust participatory approaches resulted in either a reduced likelihood of adoption or non-adoption among beneficiary farmers.

Abstract:
The paper encompasses both Research and Development by addressing how the Knowledge Translation process works to convey discoveries from concept to application, along with how the Technology Transfer process facilitates the transition from application to marketplace. The thesis is that both processes need to be explicitly linked to ensure beneficial impacts for the stakeholders involved in transforming outputs into outcomes, and for the target beneficiary stakeholders who will experience the impact of innovative devices and services. The field of Assistive Technology (AT) continues efforts to move technology-related prototypes resulting from development in the academic sector, to product commercialization within the business sector. The article describes how technology transfer can be linked to knowledge translation. This linkage is designed to increase the relevance of technology-oriented knowledge from upstream academic research, through downstream industrial development and production, and out to persons with disabilities. The linkage also provides the government sector with opportunities to conduct evidence-based project tracking and program evaluation. The relevant models, methods and measures can be applied to other fields involving technology-based innovations.

Abstract:
According to many cases, it has been demonstrated that sellers with bad intentions have manipulated letters of credit system in many ways, including fraud. Thus, many legal jurisdictions have recognized the fraud exception rule. In order to apply such exception, some conditions must be met. Among these conditions, the bank’s knowledge and a requirement of a clear evidence. Notably, the bank’s knowledge is crucial, meaning that the establishment of the sole exception will depend upon the status of the bank’s knowledge. Meaning that if the bank is aware of existing fraud, it is under a duty to refuse presentation. Otherwise, it should not. In turn, the establishment of clear evidence by the English courts is somewhat hard to achieve, consequently, such condition criticized often. Further, if the beneficiary himself commits the fraud, or has knowledge of the fraud, then the fraud exception rule will apply.1 This raises the question of whether the fraud exception should also bite where the fraud is committed by a third party but without the beneficiary’s knowledge. From these facts, this chapter will try to analysis the status of the bank’s knowledge and the hardship related to the clear evidence requirement in conjunction with the third-party fraud.

Abstract:
Abstract The effect that even small concentrations of H2S can have upon CO2 corrosion has been recognized since at least the 1940's. Early studies showed that the FeS corrosion products that were formed had an impact, but disagreed whether the impact was beneficial or not. Although H2S corrosion has not received the level of attention given to CO2 corrosion, the information available in literature has advanced the state of art over the last 10 years. A review of the literature and knowledge of corrosion of carbon steel by H2S in CO2 containing oilfield environments was presented in 2006. Since that time there has been a number of significant publications about H2S corrosion by researchers in the fields of corrosion, geochemistry and thermodynamics. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge based upon a sampling of the publications during the past ten years. In 2006 it was stated that “there is still a great deal that is not known”. Although there are still no generally accepted algorithms for predicting H2S corrosion, the understanding of complexities of the mechanism for H2S corrosion are much closer to being defined. The challenge for the next ten years is going to be to consolidate the available knowledge into a generally accepted model of H2S corrosion/pitting that spans the range from low ppm to high percentages of H2S. Issues such as the differences between laboratory-predicted corrosion rates and those in the field as well as pitting versus general corrosion rates will also have to be addressed.

Abstract:
Service-learning integrates experiential learning with community service, yet its community impacts have not been systematically studied. This may reflect the lack of a conceptual model for impact assessment, and failure to investigate the end-beneficiary’s perspective. This study proposes a tripartite model, in which the community impact of service-learning is analyzed from three perspectives: that of the community partner, the end-beneficiary, and the service-learning intervention itself. The model identifies three impact domains salient for the community partner: the level of capacity for service; goals and value achieved; and new knowledge and insights gained. For impact domains salient for the end-beneficiary, the model utilises the needs fulfilment matrix developed by Max-Neef (1991), along with the concept of quality of life. It is argued that the model can accommodate the community impact generated from the community partner, the end-beneficiary and their interactions.

Implementing a performant knowledge management system in military institutions involves emphasizing the role of the organizational dimension that promotes learning, increasing the quality of employees' work and consolidating managers in these institutions as leaders who encourage learning at all levels. The objectives of knowledge acquisition must be defined in such a way as to improve performance and support the trust of the beneficiary of the public service provided. The development of organizational culture within the institution allows people to adopt new values, attitudes and behaviors. Investing in an efficient knowledge management system involves the development of training and education programs that contribute to improving the skills of employees and knowledge sharing both vertically and horizontally, in order to provide quality public service and create value within the community. Knowledge management can be implemented more efficiently and beneficially in the context of the increasing use of technology in educational activities. Thus, integration of e-learning in knowledge management systems allows the removal of space and time barriers from learning. The question is whether current e-learning systems meet the requirements of knowledge management and provide results comparable to those obtained through traditional learning.

Abstract:
Science and technology have started to advance at an incredible pace already, the political, social, and economic environment is to be found in a perpetual state of transformation, therefore the usual life of the ,,usual" people has to adapt, too. After graduating school, more often than not, we no longer have the physical time to go to school, but still we need to learn. Life-long learning is the key to success in our era. This is one of the main reasons why e-learning has been gaining so much ground lately imposing a different perspective on teaching means. Together with the means, the teaching methods are changed too and teachers, before being able to pass on their knowledge, they must assume the students' roles themselves. The goal of this paper is to approach the concept of e-learning for foreign languages from various angles: that of the course organizer, that of the course ,,final" beneficiary (the company or organization sending an employee to be trained thus) who, willy-nilly, gives me as a teacher the course purpose and direction. The second beneficiary is taken into account afterwards, the ,,direct" beneficiary, that who takes part in the course. In this respect we will refer to different teaching methods, making the difference between the approaches used in the organization of a traditional language course - according to the level - and the approaches used in organizing an on-line course, underlining the most significant aspects that must not be overlooked in order to obtain the best results. Although we support the importance of e-learning in foreign language training nowadays, we intend to also reveal some drawbacks of this system, with the sole intention of showing that, if correctly identified and analyzed, each drawback can be ,,corrected". The third point in our agenda will be that of the technical means used in language e-learning which are relevant for the teaching process and are considered to have emerged as such together with Web 2.0. Finally, we will mention some of the possibilities of implementing this system of teaching/learning by anyone, no matter where they are.

Abstract:
Open (unrestricted) Access, Open Access (OA), constitutes a new paradigm and a movement in the preservation, dissemination and popularization of science. The reading of scientific texts in free access leads to the efficiency of documentation, the urgency of some analytical-synthetic processes in the academic field, the reduction of their costs and time terms. From the perspective of the popularization of science, open access facilitates the (self) training of the general public, the continuous formation of the community, stimulating private (horizontal) initiatives in the field of scientific research. Open and fast access cancels spatial and temporal boundaries, cultivating a culture of Open Science, while also announcing neo-enlightenment values in the given field: enlightening the masses, public orientation. The user of information services from the beneficiary often becomes the provider of such services. Freedom also generates freedom in science. All this stimulates scientific and social progress, community and individual efficiency. Openness also perpetuates openness in the area of knowledge and research. Certainly, all these aspects need to be strengthened by legislation, institutional axiology and professional deontology.

"Because history is larger than history books" this is why MyStory (Creating an ICT-based inter-generational learning environment;Project no. 511641-LLP-1-2010-1-RO-KA3-KA3MP) has been planned to explore and bring out into the light the stories of the past. Their stories matter! The stories of all those who have had history for a daily life. It is through these stories that we hope to bridge the gap between generations. Understanding the other is the first step towards embracing generations which may seem so far away or ahead of times. Seniors and teenagers - two social extremes in the present world, each of them carying an impressive load of knowledge, values and abilities. Seniors have the memories of a world slowly fading away while teenagers have the pulse of present and vision of future. It is therefore a must that these two ends bound to create a constant interconnection through sharing, input and intake on the part of both sides. Factual information is moulded by personal experice and in this particular context subjectivity brings an added value to already stored historical information. The "I" stands not for distortion of reality but for personal experience which needs to be valorised and treasured for its great potential of casting light upon present. Past itself can be updated and present technologies be put in its service. MyStory project empowers seniors and encourages them to share their stories with the young generation through interviews collected by young people. Films, the final form of these interviews, are presented to the final beneficiary on the project website at www.mystories.eu and are accompanied by complementary information on the historical and social background. This is mainly targeted at teenagers, educational institutions, museums, researchers etc who can use the processed or row material in their professional activities. On the other hand, seniors are involved in training classes to develop basic ICT skills which allow them to have access to online information and thus add a new alternative to daily activities. Training is being done with the help and support of teenagers and this ensures a bidirectional transfer of knowledge and abilities. Technology in the case of MyStory project is being used to facilitate access to online information but also to equip the user with transversal competences which can be used either on the virtual or the face-to-face medium. Combining past experiences with present innovative technologies is a means of reviving history in a functional way and making it part of the present dynamics.

Full text
Abstract:
Although knowledge spillovers are at the core of the innovation policy's justification, they have never been properly measured by any impact evaluation. This paper fills this gap by estimating the spillover effects of the FONTAR program in Argentina. We use an employer-employee matched panel dataset with the entire population of firms and workers in Argentina for the period 2002-2010. This dataset allows us to track the mobility of qualified workers from FONTAR beneficiary firms to other firms and, therefore, to identify firms that indirectly benefit from the program through knowledge diffusion. We use a combination of fixed effect and matching to estimate the causal effect-direct and indirect-of the program on various measures of performance. Our findings are robust to a placebo test based on anticipatory effects and show that the program increased employment, wages, and the exporting probability of both direct and indirect beneficiaries. The analysis of the dynamic of these effects confirms that performance does not improve immediately after the treatment for neither direct nor indirect beneficiaries.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, we evaluate the short term impact of a Fruit Fly Eradication Program in the coastal areas of Peru. Exploiting arbitrary variation in the program's intervention borders, as well as precise geographic location data of farmer's households, we use a Geographical Regression Discontinuity (GRD) approach to identify the program's effects on agricultural outcomes. For this purpose, baseline and follow up surveys were collected for 615 households -307 treated and 308 controls- . Baseline data shows that producer and farm-level characteristics in treated and control areas are balanced. This confirms that the program's intervention borders were set only as a function of financial and logistic restrictions and independently of the pest incidence levels and/or other producer and/or farm characteristics. The results show that farmers in treated areas improved pest knowledge and are more likely to implement best practices for plague prevention and control. Beneficiary farmers also present increased fruit crops productivity and sales. The robustness of these findings is confirmed using placebo tests.

Abstract:
Aid agencies, governments, and donors are expanding investment in the digitisation of their beneficiary identification and registration systems, in digitised systems for cash payments, and in the remote and algorithmic control of humanitarian and social protection programmes. This is happening in ways that may facilitate the move from humanitarian assistance to government provision and may enable the delivery of shock-responsive social protection. Yet humanitarian and social protection actors are increasingly concerned about a range of risks and accountability vacuums associated with the adoption of these technologies. While claims for the benefits of digitisation often rest on cost savings, data relating to these costs and benefits are not easily accessible. There is also an urgent need to adopt approaches to value for money in this sector that recognise the digital dignity of beneficiaries. A knowledge gap exists around how the movement towards biometric identification and algorithmic management using humanitarian and social protection data will affect the interests of vulnerable populations – so too does a gap in research that is focused on the standpoints, interests, and priorities of these populations.

Abstract:
This report explores the linkages between climate change, food security and conflict in the Central American Dry Corridor region. Specifically, the report analyses how climatic shocks and stresses affect food security and the risk of conflict in the Dry Corridor, through case studies of Guatemala and Honduras. In addition, the research analyses if, and how, the World Food Programme’s (WFP) Food for Assets programmes, which seek to increase resilience, are mitigating conflict risk, and WFP’s role in longer-term peacebuilding efforts against the backdrop of negative climate trends. The research was conducted in a selection of WFP’s intended beneficiary communities considered part of the Dry Corridor in the departments of Chiquimula and Zacapa in Guatemala and in the departments of La Paz and Santa Barbara in Honduras. Two theories of change are proposed for how WFP can improve the prospects for peace and reduce conflict sensitivity risks through its Food for Assets Resilience programming in the Dry Corridor: one related to land tenure and a second related to water governance. The research was part of a wider knowledge partnership between SIPRI and WFP. The partnership aimed to inform WFP’s potential contributions to improving the prospects for peace and how to address these through WFP’s programming.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents the results of an impact evaluation for the CRIAR program, implemented in rural areas in Bolivia. The objective of this program is to increase the agricultural income and food security of smallholder farmers through productivity gains that result from technological adoption. We use data obtained from a sample of 1,287 households-817 beneficiaries and 470 controls- interviewed specifically for this evaluation, and rely on a methodology of Propensity Score Matching. Overall, the main impacts of the program are observed in short- and medium-term variables, including crop diversification, input use and expenditures, and variables related to sales and home consumption. For the medium-term variables, the program had a positive impact on sales at the farm gate, market sales, agricultural income from sales, and a decrease in the proportion of production allocated for home consumption. The program also had a significant and positive impact on the food security of beneficiary households. For the long-term indicators, the analysis did not identify significant impacts on productivity variables. The lack of productivity impacts is probably due to the short period after program implementation, which corresponds to only one agricultural cycle. This length of time may have not been sufficient for farmers to gain experience and knowledge with regards to their effective use of the newly acquired technologies or to adjust the production process through input changes.

Tranchant, Jean-Pierre, Jessica Gordon, Jo Carpenter, et al. Bangladesh Initiative to Enhance Nutrition Security and Governance (BIeNGS) Final Evaluation Report. Institute of Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2024.036.

Full text
Abstract:
The BIeNGS programme was ultimately designed to lead to improved nutrition status of children and mothers in the two Bangladeshi districts of Jamalpur and Sherpur. This report summarises the endline findings from the evaluation of the BIeNGS programme. This comprised of a mixed methods design combining quantitative surveys with project beneficiary households, Community Clinic and CNP staff together with a qualitative and process component to gather community and implementer perspectives and process monitoring data. Quantitative findings provide a ‘before-after’ comparison of project logframe indicators amongst core target groups (i.e. women and children) in line with the project’s theory of change. Qualitative findings provide complementary, in-depth perspectives on the effectiveness and sustainability of BIeNGS activities from the perspective of beneficiaries engaged in various project components (including Producer Groups, MenCare Groups, CG, CVA and Adolescent Clubs), as well as implementing partners’ experiences. Comparing baseline and endline results, we see many positive changes in these indicators, particularly in terms of an improvement in overall food security and the frequency of consumption of different food groups in the past seven days, children’s dietary diversity, particularly amongst girls, children’s diet frequency and overall adequacy; consumption of iron-rich and zinc-rich foods, mothers dietary diversity and consumption of healthy and nutritious foods (including green leafy vegetables and eggs); and consumption of Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) during pregnancy. Accompanying these nutritional improvements, we also see positive improvements in nutrition knowledge from baseline to endline, nutrition knowledge for adolescent girls, the proportion of children who are fully immunized and 100% coverage of treatment of child diarrhoea with oral rehydration salts. We also see that many indicators improved most amongst the poorest households compared to the rest of the population, including in stunting, MAD and exclusive breastfeeding. Several aspects of the programme were targeted at women and gender relations, particularly producer groups, but also the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) support delivered by both community health clinics (the target of the programme’s capacity strengthening) and the programme’s own dedicated community nutrition promotors. Such activities also included the MenCare component, which was designed to tackle men’s role in family care structures and to address wider patriarchal structures. Here we see some similarly impressive results: improvements in women’s participation in agricultural activities; women’s feeling that they have inputs in health and nutrition matters and women’s feelings that they have control over their income. Some of these increases are particularly strong, where, for example, in Jamalpur, women’s involvement in grain farming went from 32% to 60%, high value crop farming from 6% to 25%.

At the start of this project, fungi in the genus Trichoderma were known to be potent biocontrol agents, and their primary mechanism was considered to via direct effects upon the target fungi. Due in large part to the efforts of the two PIs, we now know that this view is far too limited; while Trichoderma spp. do indeed have direct effects on pathogenic fungi, they have very far reaching effects directly upon plants. Indeed, these fungi must be considered as opportunistic plant symbionts; they provide a number of benefits to plants and themselves are favored by large numbers of healthy roots. Research under this BARD grant has demonstrated that These fungi induce resistance mechanisms in plants. They increase root development and depth of rooting; Bradyrhizobium enhances this effect in soybean. They enhance uptake of plant nutrients. They have abilities to solubilize nutrients, such as oxidized metals and insoluble phosphorus compounds by a variety of different mechanisms and biochemicals. This is a marked expansion of our knowledge of the abilities of these organisms. This knowledge has direct implications for understanding of basic plant responses and abilities, and already is being used to improve plant productivity and reduce pollution of the environment.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Exercise after breast cancer surgery has proved beneficial to rehabilitation. We evaluate the best exercise for different post-surgery complications. Information sources: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, VIP China Science and Technology Journal Database, China Biology Medicine, EMBASE and PubMed databases were searched. Combinations of breast cancer (“breast tumor”,“breast carcinoma”,“mammary carcinoma”,“breast neoplasm”) and rehabilitation exercise (“exercise”,“physical therapy”) were employed when screening abstracts/keywords of articles. Two researchers independently searched, read the title and abstract of the literature, read the full text of the preliminary included literature, and extracted the data. In case of divergence, a third researcher was consulted.
