Restaurant delivery services have gained in popularity among college students; however, students participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are not allowed to redeem their benefits via restaurant delivery services. This mixed-methods head-to-head crossover trial assessed whether college students experiencing marginal food security prefer benefits via a grocery store gift card (as a proxy for traditional SNAP benefits) or via a restaurant delivery service gift card of equivalent value, and which type of benefit is more effective at improving food security status. Abstract:
AbstractSmall electric vehicles (SEVs) have the potential to contribute to climate protection, efficient land use, and mitigation of air pollution in cities. Even though, they show many benefits that could enhance urban quality of life, they are not yet widely used. In this paper, benefits as well as drawbacks for these vehicles are discussed by combining literature research and outcomes of a mixed-method approach with expert interviews and an online survey. Resulting from these arguments, a vision for SEVs in urban areas is drawn showing them integrated in a mix of various transport modes. Environmental benefits are derived, for example, from their lower weight and low maximum speed making them a more energy-efficient transport option than heavier cars. Additionally, the small vehicle size lowers land use for SEVs and, e.g., allows for less parking areas needed. However, they also hold constraints that need to be dealt with in different ways. On the one hand, the lower safety compared to passenger cars is an issue that is further worsened by current traffic regulations. On the other hand, costs in terms of purchase prices seem to be an issue for SEVs.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractCoupled aquaponics is the archetype form of aquaponics. The technical complexity increases with the scale of production and required water treatment, e.g. filtration, UV light for microbial control, automatic controlled feeding, computerization and biosecurity. Upscaling is realized through multiunit systems that allow staggered fish production, parallel cultivation of different plants and application of several hydroponic subsystems. The main task of coupled aquaponics is the purification of aquaculture process water through integration of plants which add economic benefits when selecting suitable species like herbs, medicinal plants or ornamentals. Thus, coupled aquaponics with closed water recirculation systems has a particular role to fulfil.Under fully closed recirculation of nutrient enriched water, the symbiotic community of fish, plants and bacteria can result in higher yields compared with stand-alone fish production and/or plant cultivation. Fish and plant choices are highly diverse and only limited by water quality parameters, strongly influenced by fish feed, the plant cultivation area and component ratios that are often not ideal. Carps, tilapia and catfish are most commonly used, though more sensitive fish species and crayfish have been applied. Polyponics and additional fertilizers are methods to improve plant quality in the case of growth deficiencies, boosting plant production and increasing total yield. The main advantages of coupled aquaponics are in the most efficient use of resources such as feed for nutrient input, phosphorous, water and energy as well as in an increase of fish welfare. The multivariate system design approach allows coupled aquaponics to be installed in all geographic regions, from the high latitudes to arid and desert regions, with specific adaptation to the local environmental conditions. This chapter provides an overview of the historical development, general system design, upscaling, saline and brackish water systems, fish and plant choices as well as management issues of coupled aquaponics especially in Europe.

Abstract:
This chapter is concerned with the challenges of smart cards as a system innovation in the banking industry. System innovation is the innovation which cannot be adequately introduced by a single entity and is likely to fail unless two or more parties collectively accept the innovation. The study aims to understand the network system nature of smart cards. The comparative study of previous bank card innovations (ATM/Cash cards, Credit cards, EFTPOS/Debit cards) suggests a collaborative approach to reduce the risk of competitive innovation in the case of smart cards. However, the current situation reflects the competition among the powerful players. Unless innovators in the smart card industry see the benefits of collaboration, the diffusion of smart cards may not happen. Innovators may use an empirical analysis in this chapter to define strategic approach for their plan to compete in the smart card industry.

Abstract:
The authors investigate the payment adoption rate under consumers’ and merchants’ awareness of network externalities, given two levels of interchange fees in a multi-agent card market. For the purpose of their research, in multiple instantiations of the model (scenarios) the investigated effects are analyzed over the complete process of adoption, until the market’s saturation point is achieved. Then, for each scenario, a comparison is made between two different levels of interchange fees and different degrees of consumers’ and merchants’ awareness. To this end, the authors model explicitly the interactions between consumers and merchants at the point of sale. They allow card issuers to charge consumers with fixed fees and provide net benefits from card usage, whereas acquirers can charge fixed and transactional fees to merchants.

Specific technologies such as smart cards, PDAs, and MISs are explored in detail and case studies are provided. MFIs can also use ICTs to facilitate income-generating opportunities for borrowers, and the case of Village Phone will highlight this potential. It is hoped that this chapter will advance the case for the continued use and research into the synergistic combining of microfinance and ICTs.

The demand for increased computational power is continuing at an unrelenting pace. To meet this demand, board vendors are forced to increase the density of their systems. For example, some vendors today offer 1U servers with four processor motherboards. Accompanying this demand for increased computational power is an increasing demand for memory. With the introduction of multi-core microprocessors, the demand for memory will increase further. Traditional air-cooled memory modules, i.e., DIMMs, are increasingly consuming greater levels of motherboard real estate. In addition, rising internal sy

ABSTRACT Background: The maternal and child health handbook is a tool used by all postpartum and breastfeeding mothers up to the child aged five years. In Indonesia, the maternal and child health services recorded separately in sheets/ cards with a high probability of being lost and scattered were integrated into a home-based record handbook in 1994. This study aimed to investigate the evidence of maternal and child health handbook as health promotion tool for postpartum and breastfeeding mothers. Subjects and Method: A systematic review was conducted by searching from PubMed, Google Scholar,

It is estimated that as many as 1.5 billion people globally do not possess any form of identification [1]. Most of these people currently live in Africa and Asia. The lack of identification prevents them from accessing the basic rights and services afforded to them. In healthcare, proof of identity is required to access basic health services, and accurately monitor one’s diagnosis and treatment. This enables health care facilities to provide quality services. Without any identification, governments and development organisations cannot cater to the basic needs of these individuals. This is a ke

Graphic Processor Units (GPUs) on the latest models of computer graphic cards generate significant amounts of heat. In fact, the required dissipation rate is so large that cooling fans mounted on heat-sinks must be used to maintain satisfactory GPU temperatures. The packaging of these fans is small and similar designs have been used for cooling of electronic packaging for decades. The appropriate application of these fans as well as their optimal design for minimal noise generation and maximum air movement has not kept pace with that of large industrial sized fans. Abstract Prediction of large-scale marine structures under extreme loading conditions (e.g. impact, fire) requires the use of computational tools that are both accurate and efficient. To resolve models at this scale, engineers normally use shell elements in which two of the (in-plane) dimensions are much larger than the third (thickness) one. Herein, we propose a consistent characterization framework for shell-element models commonly used in metal marine structures. The underlying model is based on a three stress-invariant plasticity model that accounts for the effects of stress triaxiality an

Access to identification cards (IDs) is often required to claim government benefits. However, it is unclear which policies to increase ID ownership are more effective. We experimentally analyze the effect of two policy interventions to induce the timely renewal of identification cards on access to a government social program in Panama. Sending reminders about expiration dates increased the probability of on-time renewals and of accessing benefits from a social program by 12 and 4.3 percentage points, respectively, relative to a control group. In contrast, allowing individuals to renew their ID
