Full textThis thesis is a collection of three essays on poverty, inequality and well-being for Brazil. The first chapter aims at understanding the key determinants of the Brazilian inequality. this chapter firstly sketches a poverty and inequality analysis for Brazil and then investigates the main determinants of inequality, particularly racial and geographical differences, by applying several decomposition techniques. the second chapter investigates Brazilian poverty by exploiting geographical differences and questions whether the standard approach in measuring poverty is informative enough taking into consideration that the population is clearly heterogeneous. The first two chapters of this work apply techniques able to measure and decompose both poverty and inequality within the context of the standard monetary approach. The purpose of the last chapter is to enlarge the perspective of our analysis by adopting the capability approach. hence the third chapter aims to model and estimate the health functioning production function as a relation that conveys to what extent people are able to convert private and public resources into the achievement of the specific functioning being healthy .

Full textThe aim of architecture is to act in the interests of man, to be between man and natural environment in which he lives. Its main aim is to maximize the satisfaction of the man’s physiological and psychological needs. The designer has to consider the environment and the human reality which coexist and influence each other within the architectural space. The purpose of this research is to develop a methodological interdisciplinary framework, a support to the design process that could generate new knowledge and theories, and proves that the health and wellbeing can be enhanced through conscious and aware projects of architecture. The man is a "bridge" between different science: architecture, electromagnetism, informatics, neuroscience, psychology and historical and philosophical culture. Comparing data of multidisciplinary analysis, guidelines arises for efficient requalification of urban areas, for the optimization of working and educational environments, for the humanization of hospital, and to design domestic space where man find protection, safety, peace. This multidisciplinary methodology considers the discipline of architecture as a means to achieve homeostasis, and it considered the architectural space as a place where it is possible to create the best conditions for the man: physical comfort (sound, light, air quality, etc..) psychological and social well-being (the space can promote or inhibit social relations): the ultimate aim of architecture is to "produce" well-being.

Full textAim of the present project was the evaluation of the effects of different prebiotics and yeast strains of Saccharomyces boulardii on the intestinal ecosystem of dogs, by use of microbial and chemical analyses. In the first part of the project, the effect of S.boulardii (SB), fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), lactitol (LAC), and their combination were evaluated. There were 6 treatments: 1) control diet with no addition of substrates; 2) SB; 3) FOS; 4) LAC; 5) SB+FOS; 6) SB+LAC. In this study, SB failed to exert any effects on the selected bacterial populations. Conversely, administration of FOS and LAC may improve canine intestinal health, reducing proteolysis and enhancing VFA production. In the second part of the project (in vitro + in vivo trial), the effects of two yeast cell wall products (MOS and CW), a yeast strain of Saccharomyces boulardii (SB) and, only in vitro, fructo- oligosaccharides (FOS) were evaluated; the in vitro trial focused on 6 treatments: 1) control diet with no addition of substrates (CTRL); 2) MOS; 3) CW; 4) FOS; 5) SB; 6) CW + FOS. the in vivo feeding trial was conducted with 16 healthy adult dogs and 3 supplements were studied: 1) MOS; 2) CW; 3) SB. This was the experimental design: 1) 28d of adaptation to the base diet; 2) 28d of treatment with 2 groups (CTRL vs. MOS); 3) 28d of treatment with 2 groups (CTRL vs. CW); 3) 28d of treatment with 2 groups (CTRL vs. SB). After each experimental phase, a 14d wash out- period was conducted with the CTRL diet. Results from the in vitro study seem to show that supplements had both inhibitory and stimulating effects on faecal bacterial populations. Results from the in vivo study failed to highlight strong effects of the tested supplements on canine intestinal microbiota.

GOTTARDO, DAVIDE. "BENESSERE ANIMALE E QUALITA' DEI PRODOTTI: RUOLO DI STRATEGIE NUTRIZIONALI INNOVATIVE." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/545171.
Full textOptimal animal nutrition allows adequate productive performance and correct welfare conditions of livestock species; moreover, it ensures animal’s products with high-quality characteristics that meet safety and security requirements for the consumers and guarantees a suitable nutritional value. In this context, the application of nutritional strategies, including the supplementation of additives, used to improve feed nutrition, may play a significant role in livestock production; it also represents an important issue in the regulatory framework of the European Union. In this paper, four in vivo trials are presented to evaluate the dietary effects on the quali-quantitative performance of broiler chickens and pigs. In particular, the use of synthetic emulsifiers, a polyphenols-enriched olive pulp extract and a probiotic was considered in the whole production cycle of broiler chicken. Whereas, the polyphenol-enriched olive pulp extract was added in the diet of sows and piglets to investigate the positive effects of this supplementation in two critical moments of the productive system of this species: the peripartum of the sows and the weaning of piglets. In the first experimental trial, a total of 1200 one-day-old ROSS 308 broiler chicks were assigned to four experimental groups consisting of 15 pens with 25 birds per pen. A 2×2 factorial design was applied to compare the different dietary treatments [control diet (CTR) or diet supplemented with AVI-MUL TOP (AMT) at 1g/kg from d 0 to 12, 0.75g/kg from d 12 to 22 and 0.5g/kg from d 22 to 44] and gender. Growth performance (BW, ADG, FI and FCR) were determined on days 0, 12, 22, 37 and 44 for males. One female chick (day 37) and one male chick (day 44) from each pen were chosen on BW basis and slaughtered to collect blood, liver samples and caecum content and to determine the dressing and breast muscle percentages. AMT supplementation increased BW on day 12 (P=0.02), ADG from day 0 to 12 (P<0.05), ADFI from day 12 to 22 (P=0.06). Moreover AMT supplementation reduced FCR from days 0 to 44 (P<0.05) in males. Dietary AMT significantly increased the b* index (yellowness) (P<0.01) and reduced cooking loss (P=0.03). The emulsifier also increased plasma cholesterol, HDL and LDL content compared to the control (P<0.01, P=0.02, P<0.01, respectively), while no significant differences were observed on intestinal microbial flora among treatments. The expression of Apo A-I and Apo B lipid metabolism related genes was evaluated from the liver samples and a significant up regulation (P=0.0056) of the Apo B gene was found in AMT females chicks. In conclusion, the supplementation of AMT may have a beneficial effect on the growth performance, lipid metabolism and meat quality of broiler chicks. The second experimental trial evaluated the dietary effects of a polyphenol-enriched olive pulp extract on 720 one-day old ROSS 308 female chicks, equally assigned to four experimental groups consisting of 12 pens and 20 animals each. The dietary treatments were control diets (CTR) or diet supplemented with 200 IU/kg of vitamin E (T1), 1 and 5 g/kg of Ethifenol (T2 and T3, respectively). The substance in exam had a total polyphenols concentration of 25mg/g. Growth performance (BW, ADG, FI and FCR) were determined on days 0, 10, 20 and 35. At the end of the trial, one female chick was chosen from each pen on BW basis and slaughtered to collect blood, liver samples and caecum content and to determine the dressing and breast muscle percentages. The supplementation of the olive pulp extract did not show any significant differences (P>0.05) on the growth parameters and caecum microbiological analysis among the groups; while the dietary supplementation significantly improved the b* index (yellowness) of animal skin (P=0.003). The extraction and quantification of total polyphenols and the expression of some lipid metabolism related genes (PPARα, ATGL, ACACA, CPT-1, ACOX and FASN) were performed from hepatic samples. The hepatic concentration of phenolic compounds did not show any statistical differences (P>0.05) among the groups, although it reflects the supplementation level. No statistical differences were also found in the gene expression. In conclusion, the olive pulp extract showed minor benefits on the growth performances, which however appear interesting considering the short production cycle of these animals. The third experimental trial was divided into two phases to investigated the effects of the polyphenolsenriched olive pulp extract supplementation on the performance of sows and piglets. During phase 1, 18 multiparous sows, homogeneous by age and birth order, were assigned to two experimental groups of 9 animals each. The dietary treatment were control diet (C) or diet supplemented with 1.25kg/ton of olive pulp extract (T). The compound of interest was added to the diet for a period of about 40 days (from two weeks before the expected date of birth to the end of lactation). Body condition and reproductive parameters were analyzed and colostrum samples were collected to determine the total polyphenols concentration and the antioxidant activity. In phase 2, 180 newborn piglets, homogeneous by body weight, were assigned to four experimental groups consisting of 45 animals and 9 replicates each. The Ctr-Ctr piglets were born from control sows and did not receive the extract, the Ctr-T group was composed by control sow’s piglets who received the compound; the T-Ctr piglets group was born from treated sows and they did not receive the olive pulp extract and the T-T group was composed by treated sow’s piglets who received the extract. Phase 2 was divided into two periods (prestarter from d 0 to 14 and starter from d 15 to 42) and dietary treatments were control diet (Ctr) and diet supplemented with 5.0 and 2.5kg/ton of olive pulp extract (T) in the first and second period, respectively. Growth performance (BW, ADG, FI and FCR) were determined on days 0, 14 and 42. The supplementation did not show any significant differences (P>0.05) in phase 1; however, it was observed that the body condition and reproductive parameters of the treated animals were higher than the control group. The antioxidant activity of T sows was statistically higher (P=0.05), although the total polyphenol concentrations did not show significant variations (P>0.05) between the two groups. In phase 2, the T-Ctr group showed higher body weight at day 42 (P=0.03) and higher ADG during the second period (14-42d) and overall (0-42d) (P=0.03 and P=0.05, respectively) compared to the other groups. Moreover, FCR, carcass yield and transformation yield of the T-Ctr group were statistically significant (P≤0.01) compared to the other experimental groups. In conclusion, the supplementation of the compound of interest showed the best results on the piglets’ performance, underlining the importance of milk as a vehicle of functional substances and suggesting possible beneficial effects on the general health conditions. In the fourth experimental trial, a total of 960 one-day-old ROSS 308 male broiler chicks were assigned to four experimental groups consisting of 12 pens with 20 animals per pen.The dietary treatments were control diet (CTR) and diet supplemented with 600, 400 and 200g/t of METALACT (T1, T2 and T3, respectively). The probiotic additive was composed by a mixture of Lactobacillus pharmacimis and L. rhamnosus and supplemented for a period of 48 days. Growth performance (BW, ADG, FI and FCR) were determined on days 0, 11, 22 and 48. At the end of the trial, one chick from each pen was chosen on BW basis and slaughtered to determine the dressing and breast muscle percentages. The METALACT supplementation did not showed any significant differences (P>0.05) on the growth parameters investigated. In conclusion, the probiotic did not modify the growth performance, but it is not possible to exclude possible beneficial effects on modulation of the microbial intestinal flora and on the qualitative properties of the meat. The overall results showed that the dietary supplementation of beneficial substances is not only able to significantly modify the animal’s growth performance and the quality of the products, but it is also able to improve the general welfare conditions and the intestinal balance of the livestock species.

Full textCurrently, the interest in the relationship between nature and human well-being has increased and many disciplines are investigating the influence nature has on human health, both physical and psychological. Exposure to a natural environment, for example, proved to be a useful practice in improving attention levels as well as in lowering stress levels. Horticultural therapy also uses plant care activities as a non-pharmacological therapy associated for the improvement of physical and mental health. The aim of this industrial doctorate is to study new ways of promoting psychological well-being through exposure to natural environments and the use of orthotherapy practices, considering the relationship between an individual’s exposure to the natural environment and his psychological health. In the first part of this dissertation is presented a systematic review of literature and is also shown an analysis of the specific context of the learning center where the research was carried out (psycho-educational context, type of users, needs of users and professionals, etc...) The design and construction of two outdoor spaces inside the center are illustrated, suitable to accommodate various types of orthotherapeutic activities, including sessions of psychotherapy and outdoor teaching. The second part of the paper illustrates three parallel projects with the common aim of promoting outdoor activities and exploring at a later stage the possible consequences on psychological health. First, using the space of the center was designed and built an external structure suitable for hosting psychotherapy sessions, primarily aimed at adolescent and adult patients. At the same time, an equipped garden has been designed and built for younger users, allowing them to teach outdoor skills, propose functional games in a natural context and make a didactic vegetable garden program. Finally, an evaluation in the form of an anonymous online questionnaire, which takes into account the benefits perceived by the therapist, relating to himself and the patient, has been proposed to various professionals engaged in psychological well-being, during an outdoor psychotherapy practice. This practice, called walk and talk, consists of performing an outdoor therapy session and literally "talking and walking together". The aim of the investigation is manifold: firstly, to promote the choice of an outdoor environment by professionals, provide professionals and clients with new forms of experimentation within the therapy path and finally collect the opinion of the therapists themselves on the perceived benefits, so as to evaluate any improvements to the protocol currently in use. The various projects initiated within the company will be kept active over the next two years at least and the data collected will be compared with those obtained from the sessions illustrated in this paper. The expected results related to psychological well-being are an increase in levels of well-being related both to the exposure of individuals and professionals to a natural environment and to the implementation of therapies in the outdoor context.

Full textThis work is focused on the identity process among adolescents and young adults internationally adopted and their well-being. The four studies that compose this dissertation are characterize by the quantitative approach and the assumption of a family perspective. The first study explore well-being, ethnic identity, family relations and the perception of social context among adoptees and their parents. The second study identifies a type of identity of adoptees for different patterns of ethnic identification and national. The type of adoptees shows differences with respect to the quality of family relations, well-being and multiple motives on identity construction. The third study develops a model of the explanatory factors determining the adoptees well-being; it confirms the influence of some family and social variables on identity processes and assess whether adoptees’ identity is related to psychosocial well-being. The fourth study is focused on the perception of cultural socialization and discrimination as predictors of ethnic identity in Italy and the USA, highlighting common aspects and specific cultural differences. The results show that family relations and the degree of integration between two cultural identities are important protective factors for psychosocial adjustment and well-being of adoptees. Parents play a vital role in supporting this process through cultural socialization strategies.

Full textThe transition to primary school constitutes an event of a great impact on the construction of children’s Self-image. In this environment, children are confronted with new learning tasks, which should develop curiosity, interest, motivation, and confidence in their own abilities, with positive effects on their well-being. However, in the face of the teacher's demands, feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and refusal often arise. This can be particularly noticeable in the case of difficulty in learning, as learning how to read and write properly is one of the abilities on which children and their parents have greater expectations at the beginning of school. In such a challenging environment, children can develop resources that it is good to support. Based on these assumptions, three studies were conducted with the aim of: a) exploring the child's experience of well-being in a quali-quantitative way (study 1); b) identifying the factors that can affect the child's experience of well-being in the school context, through an integrated study of the characteristics of the child and his/her parents (study 2); c) implementing and evaluating a program to enhance literacy abilities and well-being of school-age children (study 3).

Full textThe overview of Animal Welfare (AW) assessment systems shows that it is based on multiple direct and indirect indicators, but for all systems examined, there is never the possibility of confirming the welfare estimate with objective and independent reference methods. Even though the various systems want to estimate an objective data of animal welfare, they respond to specific social categories: public opinion (e.g., Welfare Quality), administrative policy (e.g., IBA), breeders (e.g., FARM, IBS and SDIB), consumers (FARM, Welfare Quality). At the moment, there is no truly holistic system; in relation to the main need to satisfy, there is a tendency to simplify the evaluation by omitting some significant aspects. The general aim of this research activity was to evolve an animal welfare evaluation system (SDIB model), that has been carried out at the DIANA Department of Piacenza. Firstly, this system is suggested for farms as a tool for innovation of the livestock enterprise, but in full compliance with the regulations, social sensitivity, and ethical requirements. The main objective was to develop a software, called IDEAL, dedicated to the SDIB evaluation model. The possible redundancy of the welfare indicators included in the model was evaluated within an adequate population of farms in the Po Valley and in the State of Oregon. In addition, SDIB has shown encouraging results about its use as a tool for the evaluation of extra company factors. In fact, some evaluations have been carried out in groups of farms characterized by differences in production and management (e.g., biological system vs. conventional, adherence to Grana Padano Disciplinary vs. Parmigiano Reggiano Disciplinary, Po Valley system vs. Oregon system) to assess the possible impact on the level of AW. Applying this methodology, the investigation of these factors goes beyond the current trends. On the contrary, it favors the animals' response to these factors. With regard to the comparisons carried out, a high variability relative to the level of animal welfare has been found for all groups of farms, demonstrating how different disciplines or farming systems are not sufficient to ensure an optimal level of AW, if not related to something else. A second objective of the project was to study blood reference values at the various stages of lactation in order to provide greater objectivity to the AW assessment systems with independent data. Therefore, blood samples were taken from the most representative categories of cows during the production cycle (dry, immediate post-partum, end of the first month of lactation and advanced lactation) belonging to herds with a good level of welfare in all SDIB clusters, adequate feeding at all stages and excellent standards of facilities and equipment, with the aim of identifying the reference levels of various physiological indicators. For the 4 phases, new reference ranges have been identified, and they can be used to validate the various assessment systems of the AW.
