Karakas, Fahri. "Benevolent leadership." Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=86595.

Abstract:
This study develops a higher-order conceptual model of benevolent leadership based on four paradigms of common good in organizational research: Morality, spirituality, positivity, and community. This study is based on the assumption that these four areas of research can provide management scholars and practitioners a theoretically sound basis and a wealth of knowledge to create common good in organizations. The term "common good" is used in the sense of shared benefits or positive outcomes for all or most members of a community (Bryson, and Crosby, 1992). I define benevolent leadership as the process of creating a virtuous cycle of encouraging, initiating, and implementing positive change in organizations through: a) ethical decision making and moral actions, b) developing spiritual awareness and creating a sense of meaning, c) inspiring hope and fostering courage for positive action, and d) leaving a legacy and positive impact for the larger community.
This thesis makes three key contributions to organizational research and literature: First, the major theoretical contribution is the development of a higher-order conceptual model of benevolent leadership based on four paradigms of common good in organizations. Second, the methodological contribution is the development of a theory-based instrument (Benevolent Leadership Scale) to measure the multidimensional higher-order construct of benevolent leadership composed of four dimensions: ethical sensitivity, spiritual depth, positive engagement, and community responsiveness. Third, the empirical contribution is the exploration of potential outcomes of benevolent leadership in organizations; namely perceived organizational performance, affective commitment, and organizational citizenship behavior.
Results indicate positive and significant relationships between benevolent tendencies of leaders and their affective commitment and organizational citizenship behaviors. Positive and significant associations were found between benevolent leadership and perceived organizational performance. Three clusters emerged based on benevolent tendencies of leaders: Social Activists, Spiritual Visionaries, and Benevolent Leaders.

Ak, Kurt Deniz. "Glass Cliff In Relation To Hostile And Benevolent Sexism." Master's thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613851/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the glass cliff phenomenon and two forms of sexism: hostile sexism (HS) and benevolent sexism (BS). Glass cliff refers to the tendency to endorse a woman candidate for a normally desirable, high-status position at the time of downfall or when things are not going well. A questionnaire package was first administered to a working people sample (N = 328) with diverse occupational backgrounds. Based on the analyses and findings, to be able to eliminate the potential confounding effect of the order of the scales in the package, the study was repeated on a student sample (N = 147). Finally, analyses were repeated after the data from both samples were combined. Results showed no evidence for 1) the presence of glass cliff and 2) the presence of a relationship between glass cliff and two forms of sexism. The results from both samples were discussed, presenting some plausible explanations for the findings. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are also presented.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I present three manuscripts in which I integrate race into an ambivalent sexism framework using experimental, correlational, and cross-sectional methods. The first paper tests whether a female's race acts as a subtype to differentially elicit benevolent sexism (BS). Two experiments demonstrated that BS is more strongly associated with White women than Black women. The second paper explores the relationship between protective paternalism (a subcomponent of BS), anti-minority attitudes, and threat. Threat was associated with stronger endorsement of protective paternalism and a corresponding increase in anti-minority attitudes, particularly for White men, implicating BS in the maintenance of racial inequality. Finally, my third study investigated potential real-world consequences of the differential application of BS to Black and White women in the context of police responses to intimate partner violence (IPV). Officers were more likely to file supplemental paperwork for White victims than Black victims, and were most likely to do so when encountering a White victim and a Black suspect. White victims were also written about with a greater "risk focus", consistent with BS. In sum, chapter II establishes racial differences in who receives BS, chapter III demonstrates how paternalistic protections of White women are racialized, and chapter IV reveals how the intersection of BS with racial stereotypes may impact women seeking help from police. This dissertation is the first investigation in the social psychological literature of how race informs the targets, function, and consequences of BS.

Campbell, Dawna Jeanette. "Demographic Variables as Moderators Between Benevolent Sexism and Relationship Satisfaction." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3932.

Full text
Abstract:
Romantic relationship satisfaction relates to better overall health, and identifying factors that affect relationship satisfaction could lead to better understanding of romantic relationships. This study examined the correlation between benevolent sexism, a subtle form of sexism resembling chivalry and relationship satisfaction; gender, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, education, and length of time were also considered as moderators. The ambivalent sexism theory, which posits that sexism is ambivalent and ranges from hostile to benevolent sexism was the theoretical framework guiding this study. Previous research indicated benevolent sexism may predict relationship satisfaction. However, there remained an important gap in the literature; the demographic variables above had not been considered as moderators in those analyses. Thus, the purpose of this non-experimental study using data collected from a U.S. sample of adults who had been in romantic relationships for at least 1 year was to determine if such links existed. Correlation and regression analyses revealed that benevolent sexism, measured by the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory did not predict relationship satisfaction, measured by the Relationship Assessment Scale, and none of the demographic variables served as moderators. Results were trending toward significance though, suggesting that benevolent sexism might influence women's relationship satisfaction. Further research using longitudinal, mixed-method studies of dyads is recommended to gain a clearer understanding of this phenomenon. Findings would make important contributions to existing literature and enhance social change by providing professionals and individuals with awareness of how benevolent sexist attitudes may affect relationship satisfaction.

Abstract:
Master thesis in Political Science by Alexander Gaber, 2015, ‘Evidence of the BenevolentState?- The Case of the R2P’ The study sets out to analyze the validity of the soldiarist prescriptive hypothesis that a shared understanding amongst the society of states can induce a circumstance where states will act selflessly by willingly subordinating their rights and sovereign prerogatives for the sake of individual rights. For this purpose the R2P legal doctrine is analyzed genealogically to generate an inference on if the dominant consensus within the society of states on the doctrine has generated this circumstance. The analysis concludes that the R2P doctrine has neither in customary - or codified international law enabled the individual’s right to protection to hold precedence over the right and sovereignty of the state. The case study, conclusively does not serve to validate the hypothesis, but neither does it invalidate it as the R2P constitutes a representative case. The intermarriage of the genealogical method with the English School framework is deemed fruitful and new insights into, specifically, the concept of sovereignty is generated which serves to evolve and reinforce the theoretical framework of English School Solidarism.

Abstract:
The study of watersheds in the humid tropical environment, has acquired great importance in recent decades due to growing demand for water resources planning. However, many studies have confused the concept of watersheds, believing that this was simply a network of interconnected channels that form the hydrography of the land, thus making it as simple cartographic unit of study. This commonplace is the use of concepts related to the studies of basins, causing serious confusion in the current academic productions. Assuming that the basins are territorial spaces of vertical and horizontal movement of water, the interconnected network of channels, as one of its main elements, we chose the basin of Rio Benevente to study the relationship between the dynamics of this river and its structural and morphological constraints. Based on the method of the Association and indeterminacy in geomorphologic Leopold and Langbein (1970), and through information from the technical and operational procedures of geomorphological partitioning and compilation of data from hydrographic parameters, could find that the sub-drainage systems that make up the total of the hydrographic basin, driven by evolving litoestruturas crystal and the tectonic proterozóico, therefore, the old organization, and that, apparently, show not suffer reactivations modern as to intervene in the evolution of sub-compartments of regional importance and the evolution of the network of river channels. Enough is thus concluded that the processes to fit the drainage, catch river, sectioning of litoestruturas, gênesis of knickpoints and evolution of longitudinal river profiles are associated with the dynamic of geomorphic processes differential, under litoestruturas of strong anisotropic nature and complex organization geotectônica. Fact responsible for the diversity of sub-compartments of important configuration and evolutionary dynamics of river systems of differential.

In 1814, a group of wealthy Boston merchants led by Francis Cabot Lowell established the Boston Manufacturing Company in Waltham, Massachusetts. In the decades before the Civil War, Lowell and his partners constructed public schools for Waltham children living in the vicinity of the mills and paid many of the schools' educational expenses, including teachers' salaries. The company also promoted adult education through its establishment of the Manufacturers' Library and its support of the Rumford Institute for Mutual Instruction, one of the first lyceums in the United States. Previous research on the Boston Manufacturing Company has primarily focused on its unique labor force ("mill girls") and its role as America's first modern industrial corporation, while the story of the company's involvement in education has been neglected. Based on company records, school committee reports, newspaper accounts, Francis Lowell's personal correspondence, and other archival sources, this study highlights the forgotten history of corporate support for education in antebellum Waltham. The findings indicate that the support given to Waltham educational institutions by Francis Lowell and his business partners can be attributed to their patriotism, generosity, and belief in civic virtue. Implications for the history of American education, the Industrial Revolution, and twenty-first century public/private sector educational partnerships are addressed

Abstract:
All studies to date that have assessed the direct impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on performance outcomes have done so in the context of a Western society. Because of this void in the literature, it remained unknown how living in a low egalitarian and/or non-Western society may impact women's experiences of sexism. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in the literature. This study investigates the impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism on women in four Turkish textile factories. 210 Turkish female textile factory workers were randomly assigned to the benevolent sexism, hostile sexism, or control condition. Performance and level of gender identification were measured. The results of this study indicated that while participants were impacted by sexism, the impact of benevolent vs. hostile sexism resulted in different outcomes than for women in higher egalitarian Western Societies.

McMahon, Jean Marie. "Benevolent Racism? : The Impact of Race and Sexual Subtype on Ambivalent Sexism." PDXScholar, 2014. http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1971.

Abstract:
How does a woman's race influence perceptions of her sexual behavior? This study investigated how race and sexual behavior intersect within an ambivalent sexism framework. Benevolent sexism characterizes women as pure and defenseless, which contrasts with the cultural stereotype of Black women as aggressive and hypersexual. Gender and racial stereotypes may combine to produce different outcomes for women who behave according to negative (promiscuous) or positive (chaste) sexual subtypes. According to shifting standards theory, evaluations and treatment of these women should vary depending on whether the measured behavior is non-zero sum (limitless) or zero sum (finite). To test this hypothesis, participants read about a chaste or promiscuous Black or White woman and reported their hostile and benevolent attitudes about her (non-zero sum) and whether she should be picked to represent an organization that supports women of her sexual subtype (zero sum.) Results suggest, consistent with shifting standards, that more benevolent sexism was expressed to a chaste Black, rather than White, woman. However, the Black woman did not receive more positive trait evaluations or experience an advantage on the zero sum outcome. Minority women who conform to benevolent sexism ideals may be highly praised (non-zero sum reward) but are not given tangible rewards (zero sum reward) for their behavior. This pattern of treatment perpetuates discrimination against Black women within society.

Abstract:
Using the theoretical lenses of attribution theory, contact hypothesis, and exemplification theory, this study examined how narratives of homelessness influenced domicile individuals when determining benevolent behaviors. Survey data were collected from 331 participants regarding the influence of particular narratives on the likelihood and types of assistance participants would be willing to provide homeless individuals. Participants also responded to two open-ended questions to identify other factors likely to influence the offering of assistance. Findings revealed that participants considered 12 factors when choosing whether or not to act benevolently, including cause, vulnerability of the homeless individual, and willingness to escape homelessness most commonly mentioned. The findings also suggested that domicile individuals divided the homeless population into categories (e.g., deserving and undeserving) based upon narratives to decide whether or not to act benevolently. The practical applications of these findings stress the importance of accurate representations of homelessness from narrative sources including media outlets. Keywords: narrative, attribution, exemplification theory, contact hypothesis, homelessness, benevolence.

Habitat use by organisms is directly influenced by resources availability. This availability is affected by physical parameters varying through space and time. Thus, home range, social organization and behavior of the species in the environment are usually determined by the mosaic distribution of resources. Given this, this study aimed to investigate the biotic and abiotic descriptors that can be explanatory of habitat use by Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in Benevente Bay, Espirito Santo State, Brazil, also to identify possible areas of preferential occupation (key habitats). From January to December, 2012 we carried out 34 surveys using 4 or 14 meters boats, and measured environmental variables along parallel transects. From the systematic (n = 17) and opportunistic surveys (n = 17) we sighted 33 groups of dolphins. The survey effort was of 142 hours and 3 minutes, comprising 7 hours and 8 minutes (5.02%) of direct observation of the animals. For each sighting, it was recorded the group’s geographical position, size, composition and behavior. The average number of individuals and infants per group were 5.24 (± 3.25) and 1.03 (± 1.29), respectively. Spatial analysis revealed that encounters occurred in 30 (23.44%) out of the 128 cells of the grid created using ArcGIS 9.3.1. to represent the sampled area, evidencing that habitat occupation by dolphins is not uniform (χ2 = 22.97, p<0.001). The area used by groups (estimated through Minimum Convex Polygon) was 48.14 km2, which represents 39.40% of the studied area (122.18 km2) and demonstrated the significant concentration of dolphins in certain regions (χ2 = 22.43, p<0.001). Generalized linear models applied to the data showed that Guiana dolphin’s spatial distribution can be explained by latitude (GLM regression, z = 2.57, p<0.02), depth (GLM regression, z = 2.18, p<0.03) and flood tide (GLM regression, z = 2.39, p<0.02). Regarding to the group characterization, we observed that its size increases as a function both of dissolved oxygen in the water (GLM regression, z = 2.08, p<0.04) and infants presence (GLM regression, z = 4.27, p<0.001), unlike it tends to decrease during displacement activities by the dolphins (GLM regression, z = -2.86, p <0.005). From 6 hours and 26 minutes of behaviors counted, 46.37% were spent by animals on foraging/feeding, 34.20% in travelling, 10.62% in resting and 8.81% in socializing. The latitude in the study area has influence on the occurrence of foraging/feeding (GLM regression, z = 2.74, p = 0.006) and all records of this behavior (n = 15) occurred at bay’s northern/northeastern sectors. The spatial use was heterogeneous and the occurrence of groups concentrated in the north of the area. Some variables as latitude, tide, dissolved oxygen, infants presence and behavior are likely to influence the habitat use of the Guiana dolphin in this environment. The presence of infants throughout the year, coupled with the proportion of time spent by the groups in foraging/feeding observed in this study indicate that Benevente Bay has been used by Guiana dolphin for breeding and feeding, and demonstrate the importance of this habitat for the species.

Abstract:
Scotland has a distinctive youth justice system founded on the welfare ethos of Kilbrandon and the unique Children's Hearing System. The most recent addition to the youth justice landscape is the Whole System Approach and of primary concern to this research, Early and Effective Intervention (EEI). EEI a multiagency decision making process which takes a holistic, child-centred approach to offending by children and young people; views offending as a potential wellbeing concern and aims to act in a timely, effective and proportionate way. While its use in practice has increased, scrutiny of the process is scarce. Applying a modified grounded theory methodology, this research examines how and why decisions are made at EEI and its potential impact, exploring practice in three case study locations. The research makes an original contribution to knowledge as it provides an expose of EEI decision making in practice, which then provides the opportunity to consider implications which arise from that practice. The findings reveal inherent complexities and tensions between the intentions and practice of EEI on the ground. Applying social control theory, the potential impact of these tensions are considered in relation to outcomes for young people, practitioners and the wider youth justice system. The researcher argues that EEI represents an extension of the formal youth justice system, where the stated benevolent intentions on the part of practitioners through diversion and addressing wellbeing are met; but that net-widening, up-tariffing and boundary blurring to the detriment of rights are present and unavoidable. The system may be producing the outcomes which it aimed to avoid, particularly for groups already considered 'the usual suspects'. The research concludes that the inherent tensions in EEI, representative of wider youth justice system tensions, must be acknowledged by actors at various levels of the Scottish Youth justice system; scrutiny applied to both practice and underlying concepts; and a consideration of a truly diversionary, rights-based and inclusive system required for those involved in offending or who come into contact with the formal youth justice system.

This minor dissertation engages a theoretical feminist discourse to identify the lack of benevolent female relationships in the development of religious mythology. The study explores two diverse belief systems, Hinduism and Shi'ism, in order to demonstrate that the feminine is reduced to a subservient and controlled creative force across different religious and cultural systems. The study further develops the roles of the woman in the religious tradition, as mother and nurse to the hero and the guardian of male symbols and language. I have drawn on the feminist critical analysis of Luce Irigaray, and on classical Hindu and Shi'ite myth, to discern ways in which the femaile has been alienated from patriarchal social reality, due to the male-defined construction of the sacred, divine and submissive woman.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the nature of religious cults and the question of what it is about such groups that leads some former members to experience them as producing lasting harm. The methodology of Classical Grounded Theory is identified as the most suitable for this enquiry and two interrelated studies using Classical Grounded Theory are reported. The first gives rise to a coherent and overarching conceptual model of the structure and function ofgroups that are now defined within the study as ‘mission focussed’. The second study produces a model of the elements that contribute to what certain members of such groups have identified as lasting difficulties. It is theorised that the mission focussed function of certain groups interacts with elements in some individuals (principally their perception of themselves as‘outsiders’ with a consequent high ‘need to belong’) to produce effects which participants within this research experience as lasting difficulties in living. The thesis goes on to explore which main-stream psychological paradigms might lend themselves to an understanding of this interaction and the emergent theory is related to psychotherapeutic constructs to derive an approach which may enable psychotherapists who undertake work with this client group to have a sound conceptual framework underlying their interventions. In the conclusion the potential generalisability of some of the constructs is considered.

Abstract:
As seen in the 2007 commemorations of the bicentenary of the British abolition of the slave trade, abolitionism has largely supplanted proslavery in the collective memory and national history of slavery. However for two hundred years prior to the rise of abolition British society accepted, promoted and benefitted from its extensive involvement in the system. My thesis addresses the uncomfortable history of domestic participation. It argues that whilst colonial slavery took place at a geographic distance the profits flowed back and forth across the Atlantic enmeshing the metropole with the colony through the ties of kinship, business, finance and political identity. George Hibbert, an 'eminent West India merchant', lived through both the abolition of the slave trade and finally slavery. This periodisation offers a unique opportunity to chart the course of both British abolition and anti-abolition through the lens of a single man. Hibbert constructed for himself an enlightened identity and took pride in the idea that through his cultivation of character he promoted not only himself but the West Indian mercantile class as a collective. My thesis considers how he imagined the figure of the West India merchant arguing that Hibbert crafted a distinct form of anti-abolition mercantile identity. Whilst Hibbert’s biographer continued the process of mythologizing Hibbert as the benevolent merchant this thesis will reconnect him to the disturbing origins of his power. It will highlight some of the legacies of British slave-ownership. Defining those legacies in terms of the cultural, social, political, economic and physical imprint that Hibbert left behind, the work will contribute towards a more precise understanding of the ways in which colonial slavery helped to form metropolitan London.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the feminist hypothesis that rape functions as a tool of social control through which women are kept in subordinate social positions (Brownmiller, 1975). In examining this hypothesis, the current thesis explores the role of benevolent and hostile sexism in accounting for people's responses to different types of rape (i.e. stranger vs. acquaintance rape). An examination of the literature suggests that there are general societal beliefs in the distinction between "good" and "bad" rape victims (Pollard, 1992). Interestingly, researchers have observed that benevolent sexism (BS) is related to the idealisation of women in traditional gender roles (i.e. "good" women; Glick et aI., 2000). It is, therefore, argued that individuals who idealise women in traditional roles (i.e. high BS individuals) are more likely to negatively evaluate rape victims who can be perceived as violating these norms. Nine empirical studies are presented in this thesis. Study 1 examines the potential role of BS in accounting for previously observed differences in the amount of blame attributed to stranger and acquaintance rape victims (e.g. Pollard, 1992). Studies 2 and 3 examine the psychological mechanisms that underlie the relationship between BS and victim blame in acquaintance rape situations. Studies 2 and 4 also explore the psychological mechanisms that underlie the relationship between hostile sexism (HS) and self-reported rape proclivity in acquaintance rape situations (c.f. Viki, 2000). In Study 5, the relationship between BS and paternalistic chivalry (attitudes that are simultaneously courteous and restrictive to women) is examined. Studies 6 and 7 examine the role of BS in accounting for participants' responses to stranger vs. acquaintance rape perpetrators. The last two studies (Studies 8 and 9) examine the potential role of legal verdicts in moderating the relationship between BS and victim blame in acquaintance rape cases. Taken together, the results support the argument that BS provides a psychological mechanism through which differences in the amount of blame attributed to stranger and acquaintance rape victims can be explained. In contrast, HS provides a mechanism for explaining differences in self-reported proclivity to commit stranger and acquaintance rape. The thesis concludes with a summary of the findings, a discussion of the methodological limitations of the studies and suggestions of directions for future research.

Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to answer how social and economic mechanisms operate in individual, community and state levels to impact volunteering. Both social processes and economic factors significantly impact the amount of volunteering. However, researchers have a tendency to explain volunteering only by one of these factors. As both theories are equally important in explaining volunteerism, the development of a coherent theory is necessary to combine economic and social theories. This dissertation suggested that, when evaluated together, the influences of the economic factors on volunteering diminish as individuals get more connected with the other members of the society. The three-level analysis of the volunteering largely supports the primary hypothesis of the dissertation that economic concerns for volunteering are crowded out when individuals or the society is highly connected. This finding can help practitioners design better strategies to enhance volunteering such as creating opportunities for the members of the society to interact with each other.

This thesis covers two studies. The first study sets out to determine whether benevolent apps are effective. Benevolent apps, are created to offer useful information to consumers or otherwise help them with decision-making, instead of attempting to generate sales or promote special deals. In this first study, I analyze the effect of a benevolent app on the brand consideration of the company that creates the benevolent app. Specifically, I build Android and iOS benevolent apps for Suruga Bank, and evaluate Suruga's brand consideration among the respondents both Pre and Post the app experience. I introduce several software enforcement to ensure that each respondent goes through the entire app experience. I detail the design and implementation of the experiment, from the software point of view, and present the significant results from data analysis of a 1500-user data base. In this study, I demonstrate that benevolent apps are in fact more effective at improving brand consideration when compared to traditional media advertisements like magazines. The second study sets up enforcement and methodology for serving video in an upcoming study to evaluate the effect of story-telling on brand consideration.

"This study of Ballarat and its Asylum covers the period between the 1850s and the early 1900s when an old-age pension was introduced in Victoria. It is essentially a case study. It argues that Ballarat's Asylum progressively developed and expanded upon a model of organised poor relief practiced among the industrial classes in England, in consequence of the perceived need for rapid capital expansion in Australia, and knowledge of the dangers associated with mining, building construction, and other manual work. The introduction of a secular education system in Victoria, together with enthusiasm among producers for technological innovation and skill development, led to changes in the nature and conditions of paid work, as well as to a push among workers and their sympathizers for greater appreciation of past contributions by older workers and the needs of the ill and/or incapacitated. This push was only partially addressed by the Victorian government in 1901 when it introduced the old-age pension."

Abstract:

In Brazil, research with cetaceans has been intensified the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, has gained distinction because of the increasing number of studies regarding its conservation status. An estuarine dolphin population in the southern state of Espirito Santo was chosen for this study due to lack of previous studies. Between 2012 and 2014 efforts were done by methods covering a spatio-temporal scale. A total of 117 boat trips were made (472.4 hours), from December 2011 to November 2014. The application of photo-identification technique allowed the identification of 60 individuals. Most photo-identified individuals were faithful to this area during this period and in various degrees of residence. Among individuals photo-identified no difference between the sizes of home ranges and from the overlapping areas of life of individuals and sighted groups, it observed that the portion farther north of the sampled area of Benevente Bay was most commonly used by dolphins. The largest home range previously reported for the species were recorded in this study. From the mark-recapture method was estimated 59-80 individuals. Estuarine dolphin groups were sighted in all the years and seasons, corresponding to 54.38% of the effort days. On average, the groups were composed of eight individuals, and mostly we observed the presence of calves, as well as over all the years and seasons. Since the presence of calves were correlated to the increase in size of the groups. The observations of the behavior of the sighted group found that the most common behavioral state was foraging, followed by the displacement, socialization and resting. The occurrence and fidelity of this population of Guiana dolphin in Benevente Bay, as well as the presence of calves in all seasons and prevalent behavior was foraging, all are indicators of the importance of Benevente Bay as an feeding and breeding area. In this context, the size of this population associated with anthropogenic threats already identified puts this population in a state of attention to possible management actions.

Burgess, Kaleena Dennielle. "The Effect of Hostile and Benevolent Sexism on Women's Cardiovascular Reactivity to and Recovery from a Laboratory Stressor." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4646.

Full text
Abstract:
Hostile sexism is the antipathetic expression of sexism, in which men are antagonistic towards women who threaten their superiority. Benevolent sexism is the patriarchal expression of sexism, where men express protective, yet restrictive, attitudes towards women. Both forms of sexism originate from the view that women are inferior, frail, and only suited for nurturing or domestic responsibilities. Benevolent sexism may be more harmful to women because coping is thwarted by observers' underestimation of its effects (Bosson, Pinel, & Vandello, 2009). The present study aimed to examine women's responses to and recovery from hostile and benevolent sexism utilizing measures of cardiovascular reactivity and recovery. I predicted that women would exhibit greater reactivity to hostile sexism, but impaired recovery to benevolent sexism. Participants were 124 undergraduate women (50% Caucasian, age M = 18.92), with no history of cardiovascular health issues. Sexism condition - benevolent, hostile, or no sexism - was manipulated by exposing participants to comments made by a male experimenter. Cardiovascular responses were obtained during rest, task, and recovery periods. As predicted, women exhibited greater cardiovascular reactivity after exposure to hostile sexism, and women who experienced benevolent sexism showed impaired recovery, compared to the other two conditions. Findings illustrate that hostile sexism elicits immediate responses that resolve relatively quickly. However, benevolent sexism may be more pernicious in terms of psychological and physical health due to its prolonged effects.

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, philanthropists in Britain created a large number of clubs for young people. Whilst many of these were connected with churches, British Jewry founded a number of their own clubs for young Jewish men and women. These clubs were run in the East End of London and other urban centres with high numbers of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe such as Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Liverpool. The club managers were established Jews who lived in wealthier areas of the cities who sought to pass on positive British attributes to the immigrant population. In addition to secular activities such as sports, the clubs used religion as a way to encourage young immigrants to adapt to religious life in England, a neglected aspect of their work. This thesis explores the inclusion of a religious element within these clubs, examining the period from the beginning of the clubs existence in the 1880s, responding to the influx of Eastern European immigrants arriving in the UK, until the outbreak of the Second World War when the focus of Anglo-Jewish philanthropy shifted from domestic concerns to those within Europe and on combating anti-Semitism. This thesis explores how religion promoted an ideal of national identity, specifically designed for working class immigrant Jews, as well as the ways in which religion promoted gender identities which were designed to aid integration into British society. The first two chapters analyse Orthodox Jewish boys’ and girls’ clubs. As the majority of clubs fall into these categories these chapters will look at these groups as providing normative experiences. The third chapter will look at uniformed groups and explore the extent to which these groups provided a ‘uniformed’ experience not only in relation to outward appearance but also in terms of gendered religion. The final chapter will examine Liberal Jewish clubs, the major alternative to the other organisations explored. These were attacked by those within the Orthodox mainstream due to their religious affiliation and this thesis will discuss the ways in which this criticism was heightened in response to deviations from gender norms. This thesis therefore demonstrates the centrality of gender norms in religious programming for young people.

Abstract:
Participation Space Studies explore eParticipation in the day-to-day activities of local, citizen-led groups, working to improve their communities. The focus is the relationship between activities and contexts. The concept of a participation space is introduced in order to reify online and offline contexts where people participate in democracy. Participation spaces include websites, blogs, email, social media presences, paper media, and physical spaces. They are understood as sociotechnical systems: assemblages of heterogeneous elements, with relevant histories and trajectories of development and use. This approach enables the parallel study of diverse spaces, on and offline. Participation spaces are investigated within three case studies, centred on interviews and participant observation. Each case concerns a community or activist group, in Scotland. The participation spaces are then modelled using a Socio-Technical Interaction Network (STIN) framework (Kling, McKim and King, 2003). The participation space concept effectively supports the parallel investigation of the diverse social and technical contexts of grassroots democracy and the relationship between the case-study groups and the technologies they use to support their work. Participants' democratic participation is supported by online technologies, especially email, and they create online communities and networks around their goals. The studies illustrate the mutual shaping relationship between technology and democracy. Participants' choice of technologies can be understood in spatial terms: boundaries, inhabitants, access, ownership, and cost. Participation spaces and infrastructures are used together and shared with other groups. Non-public online spaces, such as Facebook groups, are vital contexts for eParticipation; further, the majority of participants' work is non-public, on and offline. It is informational, potentially invisible, work that supports public outputs. The groups involve people and influence events through emotional and symbolic impact, as well as rational argument. Images are powerful vehicles for this and digital images become an increasingly evident and important feature of participation spaces throughout the consecutively conducted case studies. Collaboration of diverse people via social media indicates that these spaces could be understood as boundary objects (Star and Griesemer, 1989). The Participation Space Studies draw from and contribute to eParticipation, social informatics, mediation, social shaping studies, and ethnographic studies of Internet use.

The Delphinidae exhibits great plasticity of acoustic signals and adapts their sound emission according to circumstances. Currently, ocean noise pollution is a threat to cetaceans and this issue has not been well studied in relation to the estuarine dolphin (Sotalia guianensis). Therefore, their acoustic signals represent an important biological aspect to be understood. In this context, this study aimed to characterize the sound repertoire and investigate the acoustic environment of estuarine dolphin in Benevente Bay, ES, Brazil. The recordings were performed using hydrophone Cetacean Research C54XRS coupled to digital recorder Fostex FR-2 LE recording at 96kHz/24bits. Data collected between December 2011 and July 2012 totaled 27 hours and 55 minutes of effort recording. We evaluated 69 whistles, 42 burst sounds and 33 clicks’ train. Among the whistles contour the most common type was ascending (N = 37, 53%), followed by ascending-descending (N = 15, 22%) and multiple (N = 13, 19%) types. The fundamental frequency of whistles ranged between 3.51 kHz and 37.56 kHz. The frequency parameters analyzed were: start, end, minimum, maximum, range and frequencies at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of the duration. The duration and inflection points were also analyzed. The average duration of whistles was 0.298 second (SD = 0.147). About the burst pulse sounds the sign "bray call" (N = 36) was more common and longer than the "buzz sound" (N = 6). These two types occurred immediately after or near echolocation clicks. On these, 33 trains were analyzed and presented 36.45 (SD = 43.47) clicks and 11.404 (SD = 21.226) seconds, in average length. The interval between clicks or “Inter-click interval” (ICI) lasted 0.308 (SD = 0.301) seconds in average. It was also found two distinct temporal patterns for ICIs: 81% (N = 946) intervals lasted between 0.001 and 0.400 seconds and 19% (N = 224) lasted between 0.401 and 1.246 seconds. Most of the frequency parameters’ average from whistles were higher than those observed in studies with S. guianensis at south of the study area and lower than populations at north. This could be related to different frequency limits and/or the assumption that the frequency increases from south to north. The burst sounds observed were previously cited for S. guianensis and other odontocetes. Besides presenting a social function, these sounds may be related to obtaining prey. The distribution of the ICIs’ values in distinct temporal patterns was also reported for S. guianensis and other species of dolphins, which may represent the different functions of echolocation clicks. The estuarine dolphin occurred in the presence of a low-frequency anthropogenic noise. On this occasion there was a change in the acoustic behavior that possibly expresses an attempt to compensate for the effect of masking to maintain effective communication in an acoustically polluted environment.

Abstract:
This thesis is about moral philosophy, moral education, and the relationship which one has to the other. I argue for a particular moral philosophy and derive from that a view of moral education. But I also argue that the relationship between the two is of a special nature and differs from the relationship which might exist between philosophy and education in general or between, say, the philosophy of mathematics and education in mathematics. The moral theory I offer incorporates a view of moral thinking which is, in many respects, similar to that given by Hare. However, the thesis includes an extended criticism of Hare's form of utilitarianism and, especially, of his rationalist justification for the form of moral thinking which he recommends. The criticism of Hare's theory, and of his approach, forms the background against which I recommend a fundamental modification of utilitarian moral theory. Although the theory offered yields a utilitarian view of right action, it is a nonconsequentialist theory which is based upon a notion of an ideal agent. The theory is founded upon a notion of the benevolent archangel as universal ideal. The moral theory is offered as a perspective upon those moral views which we share. That perspective is recommended as one which can elucidate, underpin and inspire those moral views. The form of moral education which is derived from that theory focusses centrally upon the development of the virtues of benevolence, nonmalevolence, understanding and humility.

Abstract:
Tudo fundamentado no método escolhido.
The role of lithology and Proterozoic tectonic organization for understanding the genesis of relief in terms of differential erosion, has been relatively neglected in recent decades in boon of lines of explanation based on paleoclimatic changes, modern tectonics, and geochemistry. This fact has allowed the formation of \"closed\" on the genesis and dynamics of relief explanatory models. However, in sites of crystalline basement tectonics organization and compositional diversity chemical-mineralogical Rocks strongly supports the understanding of the role of differential erosion, in explaining the diversity of geomorphic compartments. The tectonic organization of the rocks through system failure and bottom folds (studied in the 1950s by Francis Ruellan) plays a fundamental role in understanding the processes of differential erosion responsible for the diversity of geomorphic compartments. In this sense, this work seeks to prove, by the method of the Association and Indeterminacy Geomorphological Leopold and Langbein (1970), the mountainous region of the Espírito Santo, and in special the river basin Benevente is the result of differential erosion of rocks rich chemical-mineralogical diversity, organized by folds background and strike-slip fault systems combined. To carry out this research hydrogeomorphological a proposed mapping is designed to survey watershed studying the evolution of longitudinal river profiles, profiles morphogeologicals, tectonic structures and chemical-mineralogical composition of rock units associated with morphological partitioning of relief. All based on the method chosen. This certainly seems like an obvious thing, however, highlights the work of a true system of river dissection, associated with the lowering of baseline levels (knickzones) that evolve according to the metamorphic foliation dipping flanks of the folds and the damage zone associated with the fault. The conclusion reached is that the relief Benevente River basin, and in turn the mountainous region of the state, appears as residual geomorphic compartments resulting from the evolution of river knickzonas associated with the organization of tectonic folds background responsible for the genesis of differential levels of lithologic resistance and spatial distribution of faults and fractures. The composition of the lithological units also influences strongly the partitioning of relief, being the level of reliefs and round dissecting the strong dependence of the degree of participation of the group of the minerals plagioclase amphibole and pyroxene in the lithological constitution of lithostructurals

Ulu, Sinan. "Attitudes Toward Marital Violence: Individual And Situational Factors." Master's thesis, METU, 2003. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12604933/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study aimed at investigating the relationship between factors that are inherent in the perceiver, inherent in the situation
attitudes toward marital violence, attributions of blame in a violent incident, and judgments on what the victim should do after a violent incident. Attitudes are assessed via three beliefs that the violence can be justified, the husband is not responsible from the violence, and the blame of the violence can be attributed to the wife. Factors inherent in the perceiver (named individual factors), which are thought to be important, were defined as patriarchal and traditional beliefs about marriage and the family, hostile and benevolent sexism, beliefs about normative approval of violence, and gender. Factors inherent in the situation (named situational factors) were existence of (perceived) provocation in a violent incident, severity of the violence, and employment status of the wife and the husband. 327 METU students (176 female, 151 male) had filled out a questionnaire, in which a violent episode between a husband and a wife was described. The scenario contained manipulations on the situational factors. Other constructs were assessed via Likert type scales. Analyses revealed that the sample had held negative views of marital violence, but tend to disagree with immediate precautions like calling the police after a violent episode. Both situational and societal factors had differential effects on the dependent measures, patriarchy and hostile sexism was found to be especially related with the beliefs about wife beating whereas severity and provocation was strongly related with the attributions of blame. Existence of children had decreased the agreement with reactions that would end up the marriage. Suggestions for future research, and limitations of the study are discussed in addition to the findings.

Adefila, Arinola Anneke. "The role of voluntary organisations in developing the capabilities of vulnerable young people." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3893/.

Abstract:
What do people need to live functional and flourishing lives in today’s global society? They require sophisticated socio-economic skills and the prowess of political and cultural participation to undertake duties as world citizens. Can schools in the United Kingdom, adequately prepare all young people for these challenges? Data published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF, 2009b) show that two in five children do not acquire key literacy and numeracy skills before leaving primary school. Some young people leave the education system altogether with no qualifications and limited understanding of their rights and responsibilities as global agents. Most of the young people in this category have multiple and sometimes complex disadvantages; they may live in poor and deprived neighbourhoods, experience poor physical and mental health or lack the support of adults who are able to model successful, flourishing and capable citizenry. Sen (1992) argues that the instruments needed for individuals to flourish are “capabilities”. These are the “potentials to be and do”. This study examines the means by which voluntary organisations improve the capabilities of vulnerable young people. It focuses on three major vulnerable groups: young people who have been excluded from mainstream education, those in cared for by the State and young people with learning difficulties. The research uses a mixed methods approach, skewed in favour of qualitative methods to analyse diverse trajectories of vulnerable young people towards capability. It relies on the capability approach to investigate the methods used in Voluntary Organisations which support the participants’ transformation to functional individuals. Organised as communities of learning, Centres of non-formal education provide the space, expertise and pedagogies for transformative learning processes to take place. The study shows vulnerable individuals need to combine and convert specialised capabilities in specific suites to enable them make the transition to capability successfully.

Gaston, Lindsey Eugene. "The Rugby Players Association's Benevolent Fund : a sociological study of the development of a social integration discourse in rugby football." Thesis, Durham University, 2014. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10759/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how player welfare and post-athletic retirement preparation is discussed by both professional rugby union athletes who play in the English Premiership and the Board of Trustees of the Rugby Players’ Association’s (RPA) Benevolent Fund, the non-profit division of the trade union which represents the employment and welfare interests of professional rugby union players in England. A career in professional sports is one that is uncertain and unpredictable (Roderick 2006a; McGillivray et al. 2005). A consequence of rugby union transitioning into a professional format on 26 August 1995 was that rugby union became a stand-alone career. Along with the transition in employment structure, the athlete became bigger, faster and stronger (Olds 2001; Norton and Olds 2000). This resulted in an increase of injury severity (Kaplan et al. 2008; Brooks and Kemp 2008; Bathgate et al. 2002; Garraway et al. 2000). In an effort to address the growing concern of injury severity and injury induced retirement, the RPA created the Benevolent Fund in 2001. The Foundation was given the remit to provide assistance to professional rugby union players during times of injury or illness, which included programmes that assisted with medical treatment, rehabilitation, counselling and direct financial assistance. To specifically address the growing numbers of players being forced to retire due to injury, the RPA commenced its ‘Life After Rugby’ programme, which provides educational opportunities that helps athletes to acquire alternative careers. The data gathered in this research shows, with the assistance of Levitas’s discourse models (2005, 2004, 1996a, 1996b, 1989), that there is a mixed level of involvement amongst rugby players in retirement preparation. It also underscores that players’ understanding of their risk of becoming ‘socially excluded’ – a prevailing concern of the RPA’s Benevolent Fund – is varied. The data shows that players who have spent more time as professional athletes are more likely to mirror the language used by the RPA to describe their policy objectives than those who have just recently started their professional sporting career. Early career rugby players are aware of the risk of injury, but they tend to ignore the possibility that it could happen to them personally. This research highlights the RPA’s successes with senior players but identifies the need for the RPA to modify their approach so as to encourage earlier adoption of the ‘Life After Rugby’ scheme by players just starting their career in professional sport.

Abstract:
This thesis work adopts the point of view of educational political philosophy to contemplate a metamorphosis of authority in democratic modernity, in the light of the principle of individualist legitimacy. In this context, we acknowledge the major changes which occurred in modern democracies since 1945, as well as the path of the notion of authority over the same period of time. Then, we consider the syntagmatic articulation of authority and kindness concepts, to turn them into means serving autonomy of individuals. This conceptualization of benevolent authority allows to reconsider, from the very beginning, the link between authority, and the positioning in time and relationships between the beings within democratic modernity, that is to say redesigning the roman trinity authority – religion – tradition. Hence, one can also investigate jointly the questions of authority acknowledgment in its legitimacy, and of the role of authority relationships in everyone’s quest for individual reconnaissance. Thus, the praxis of benevolent authority in education can be explored, allowing to highlight its fruitfulness to face contemporary educational challenges. Considering authority in education as a praxis means renouncing to propose a frozen model of authority, applicable to any situation and for anyone. This approach can only strengthen the assumption of a place of authority. Setting individual authority as a goal of education requires this ethics to be neither moralistic, nor paternalistic nor abstentionist

Abstract:
As Lower Canada/Quebec industrialized, the system of poor relief that developed followed a private, confessional model. While the Catholic Church controlled services for Catholics, the lay Protestant elite controlled the relief network for their community. Elite women played a major role in this network, managing most of the charities for women and children.
This thesis uses the two most important female-directed Montreal charities---the Protestant Orphan Asylum and the Montreal Ladies' Benevolent Society---to study Protestant charity and particularly child charity from 1822 to 1900. It examines the organization and work of female charity committees as well as the services offered, the relevance of gender to charity management, and attitudes to childhood and family. Extensive source material, from the archives of the two societies, enables an analysis of the characteristics of the children admitted, as well as of the management committees, and their policies.
In this period, serving on a charity board was an expected activity for elite women. As a result, committees had many members. However, this thesis reveals that only a small number of women actually participated in the substantial administrative and organizational work that was involved in running a charity. This lack of participation made it more difficult to supervise the institutions and to organize fund-raising events.
Formed by the elite to regulate as well as to help the poor, these charities permit an examination of working-class agency. Organisers used their control of admissions and discharges as well as the institutional regime to impose their values of parenting and work. Nonetheless, the study of these two charities shows that families managed to use charities to shelter their children temporarily, occasionally circumventing restrictive access rules or challenging a charity's refusal to discharge children.
As "ladies" acting in public, the women in control of these charities were influenced by restrictive gender ideologies, particularly that of "separate spheres." Gender conscious and conservative, they respected social conventions in their public appearances and deferred to men in critical areas such as investments. Yet, at the same time, they affirmed their abilities and defended their authority and their autonomy in areas considered in the women's sphere, including child-care and charity management.
Understanding charity from within a conservative culture that emphasized religion, tradition, and values like work, family, and social hierarchy, these benevolent women sought to relieve the poor but they also sought to train useful citizens. In their charity work, they faced many complex questions connected to child abuse, changes in apprenticeship systems, adequate training for children, and the rights of parents. This study argues that both their conservative approach and their women's culture, centered on a personal approach, influenced the way they dealt with these issues. Of equal importance, however, was the experience they had acquired over years of child-charity work. As a result of these factors, their emphasis on protecting the children under their care increased over time. Consequently, the policies they developed in favour of helping families with temporary care and in favour of using apprenticeship and finally extended training in the institution itself diverged from those advocated by late-century reform groups, which opted for placing children in families instead of institutions and which advocated more restrictive, scientific charity methods.

This dissertation is an interdisciplinary rhetorical project that explores the discourse of race and technology in the African-American experience, particularly at HBCUs. It examines HBCUs as a site that historically and actively embodies the African-American rhetorical tradition, resists American racial animus, and works as a conduit and a corrective for the discourse of race and technology in America. The first argument this dissertation makes is that there has been an ongoing discursive tradition of technology within the institutional framework of HBCUs that long prefigures “the digital divide” debate. These conversations not only envision how best technology can be used, but also how HBCU leaders envisioned an approach to technology in order to accomplish community goals. The second argument that this dissertation attempts to make is that this persistent discourse within HBCUs is embedded with an ethos of community well-being and support. I am referring to this notion of support as a “techno-ethos”: something hardwired into the DNA of HBCUs since its inception, and, when ignored, can have disastrous, embarrassing, or counterproductive results. Finally, this dissertation is designed to acknowledge the value of applying theories of technological discourse to the study of HBCUs and to offer avenues of practical application for the successful use of a techno-ethos of support for HBCUs on a programmatic and institutional level.

Abstract:
This thesis shines a light on tools that can be used in order to create persuasive and meaningful video games. This research was designed as an exploration of the game Behind Every Great One, with the purpose to determine if and how the game could attain a persuasive and meaningful representation of a benevolent sexist situation. To achieve this, the research took on three different approaches: an interview with the developer, a textual analysis of the game, and a qualitative survey analysing players' reactions to, and perceptions of, the game. The findings suggest that displaying characters' emotions in ways that transmit them to the players, paired with a realistic, complex representation of the social situation portrayed, are imperative for making the game have a persuasive and meaningful impact on the players. The researcher also suggests the term persuasive meaningful play as an applicable way to refer to games that contain similar characteristics as Behind Every Great One.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on Lombard Southern Italy during the early middle ages and it analyses the history of political and social conflicts between the eighth and ninth century, taking into account the transformation of Lombard political power and social practices in this area. Starting from the eight-century judicial sources, this work explores political and social competition in the Beneventan region by taking into account its geographical position at the center of the Mediterranean see. Southern Italy was considered as a periphery, and sometimes as a frontier, by both the Carolingian and Byzantine empires, and endured almost a century of Muslims' attempts to conquer the peninsula. The first chapter focuses on the ducal period and investigates the formation and consolidation of the duke of Benevento's political authority before 774. During the seventh and eight centuries, the dukes developed a military and political autonomy in Southern Italy. This was due to the geographical position of the Duchy of Benevento in the Lombard Kingdom: it was far from Pavia, the king's capital city, and it was relatively isolated from other Lombard territories. Since a dynasty was established here as early as the seventh century, these dukes developed a strong and precocious political consciousness. As a result, they were particularly concerned with the formal representation of their authority, which is early attested in both coinage and diplomas. In this chapter, the analysis of the eight-century judicial records opens two important perspectives on the duke of Benevento's practices of power. Firstly, judicial assemblies were one of the most important occasions for the duke to demonstrate and exercise his authority in a public context. In contrast to all other Lombard dukes, who rendered judgement together with a group of officers, the duke of Benevento acted alone before the competing parties. By behaving exactly as the Lombard king would in Pavia, the duke was able to utilise the judicial domain as a sort of theatre in which to practice, legitimise and represent his own public authority in front of the local aristocracy. Secondly, the analysis of seven judicial case-studies suggests that the duke was not simply the sole political authority in Benevento but also the leading social agent in the whole Lombard southern Italy. Almost all the disputes transmitted by the twelfth-century cartularies implied a ducal action, donation or decision in the past, which became the main cause for later conflicts between the members of the lay élite and the monastic foundations of the region. Consequently, the analysis of judicial conflicts reveals more about the duke of Benevento's strategies and practices of power than about the lay and ecclesiastical élites' competition for power. Since there are no judicial records between 774 and the last decade of the ninth century, both conflicts and representations of authority in Lombard Southern Italy are analysed through other kinds of sources for this period. Chronicles, hagiographies, diplomas, and material sources are rich in clues about political and social competition in Benevento. By contrast, the late-ninth-century judicial records transmitted by cartularies and archives are quite different from the eighth-century documents: they have a bare and simple structure, which often hides the peculiarities of the single dispute by telling only the essentials of each conflict and a concise final judgement. In contrast to the sources of the ducal period, the ninth- and tenth-century judicial records often convey a flattened image of Lombard society. Their basic structure certainly prevents a focus on the representation of authority and the practices of power in southern Italy. On the contrary, these fields of inquiry are crucial to research both competition within the Beneventan aristocracy during the ninth century, and the relationship between Lombards and Carolingian after 774. After the fall of the Lombard Kingdom in 774, Charlemagne did not complete the military conquest of the Italian peninsula: the Duchy of Benevento was left under the control of Arechis (758-787), who proclaimed himself princeps gentis Langobardorum and continued to rule mostly independently. The confrontation and competition with the Frankish empire are key to understanding both the strengthening of Lombard identity in southern Italy and the formation of a princely political authority. The second account the historiography on the Regnum Italiae, the third section of this chapter focuses precisely on the ambitions of Louis II in Southern Italy and it analyses the implication that the projection of his rulership over this area had in shaping his imperial authority. Despite Louis II's efforts to control the Lombard principalities, his military and political experience soon revealed its limits. After the conquest of Bari in 871, Prince Adelchi imprisoned the emperor in his palace until he obtained a promise: Louis II swore not to return to Benevento anymore. Although the pope soon liberated the emperor from this oath, he never regained a political role in Southern Italy. Nevertheless, his prolonged presence in the region during the ninth century radically changed the political equilibrium of both the Lombard principalities and the Tyrrhenian duchies (i.e. Napoli, Gaeta, Amalfi). The fourth section focuses firstly on the competition between Louis II and Adelchi of Benevento, who obstinately defined his public authority in a direct competition with the Carolingian emperor. At the same time, the competition within the local aristocracy in Benevento radically changed into a small-scale struggle between the members of Adelchi's kingroup, the Radelchids. At the same time, some local officers expanded their power and acted more and more autonomously in their district, such as in Capua. When Louis II left Benevento in 871, both the Tyrrhenian duchies and the Lombard principalities in Southern Italy were profoundly affected by a sudden change in their mutual relations and even in their inner stability. The competition for power and authority in Salerno and Capua-Benevento also changed and two different political systems were gradually established in these principalities. Despite the radical transformation of internal competition and the Byzantine conquest of a large part of Puglia and Basilicata at the end of the ninth century, the Lombard principalities remained independent until the eleventh century, when Southern Italy was finally seized by Norman invaders.
