Abstract:
WAS MUSSOLINI ARROGANT? REFLECTIONS ON A BIOGRAPHY OF BENITO MUSSOLINI The article is a review of a book by the Swedish writer and journalist Göran Hägg entitled Mussolini. En studie i makt published in Poland in 2015 as Mussolini. Butny faszysta [Mussolini. An Arrogant Fascist]. By focusing on elements which distinguished Mussolini’s dictatorship from Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich and Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union, Hägg subscribes to the view, present in contemporary historiography, that the Italian version of totalitarianism was “incomplete”. Stressing the mass support for the regime in 1925–1936, the author links the Duce’s gradual fall from power to mistakes in internal and foreign policy in the second half of the 1930s, especially to the adoption of the racist laws of 1936 as well as Italy’s accession to the Anti-Comintern Pact and participation in the Second World War on Germany’s side. What the author considers to have been unquestionably misguided moves which sealed the fate of the Italian leader on 25 April 1945 were his decisions taken during the existence of the Italian Social Republic, namely: 1 creation of internment and concentration camps for Italian Jews; 2 ruthless fight against the anti-fascist resistance movement; and 3 massacres of civilians by SS troops and fascist republicans in northern Italy in 1944–1945.

Abstract:
The advent of the twentieth century brought with it a deep sense of historical discontinuity. The period confronted writers, artists and political players with an essential dilemma: how to revise personal perspectives in light of the new social, cultural and political contexts brought about by this rupture with the past. In this regard, Ernest Hemingway and Benito Mussolini are relevant exemplars. While this study does not concern itself with Mussolini’s journey from leftist socialist activist to fascism, it will examine Hemingway’s oft-forgotten early journalistic career and his growing political awareness, an undertaking for which Mussolini provides a pertinent touchstone. This evolving discernment eventually turned Hemingway into an avowed anti-fascist and provoked his bitter opposition to Mussolini’s policies. While Hemingway did not generally engage in protracted political discourse when young, as events in Europe took shape in the 1920s and 30s and fascism became a growing political force, the writer began to expatiate his opposition to it. His views appeared in diverse venues: private correspondence, poetry, a short story and journalistic work. This commitment to the values of democracy continued throughout the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

Abstract:
The infamous January 1936 accords between Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and French foreign minister Pierre Laval have been the subject of vigorous debate. Did Laval promise Mussolini a ‘free hand’ in Ethiopia, giving tacit French approval for an Italian invasion? The two men kept no formal record of their final meeting, leaving contemporary critics and historians to speculate about their bargaining. Italian foreign ministry documents reveal the contents of the first two meetings between Mussolini and Laval. The evidence strongly indicates that Laval did give his approval for Italy to invade Ethiopia. Laval hoped to maintain limited French economic interests, but sacrificed French treaty rights in Ethiopia in order to enlist Italy in a defensive front against Germany. Laval failed to foresee the results of his diplomacy, and ended up alienating the Italian dictator.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship of Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) with literature from his youth to the end of his political career.Based on a large corpus of documents selected from the 44-volume “Opera omnia di Benito Mussolini”, this work analyzes and contextualizes, on the one hand, the reflections on literature which Mussolini develops in writings of various nature (short essays, reviews, speeches addressed to intellectuals, newspaper articles outlining his cultural politics) and, on the other, his own attempts at literary writing (which include poems, short stories, novels and theatre pieces). The purpose of the first part of the thesis is at once to reconstruct Benito Mussolini’s intellectual and political career until he rose to power in 1922 - drawing special attention to his cultural and literary education – and to study the place which he assigns to literature and to culture during the fascist regime. The second part combines the literary and stylistic analysis of Mussolini’s “literary” texts with his fundamental conceptions of literature and of the social role of the writer which can be drawn from his reflections throughout his political career to offer a better understanding of the function which he attributes to literature within his totalitarian project of a new fascist civilization

Abstract:
Abstract:
