Abstract:
Abstract: The article proposes a cross-reflection between Walter Benjamin and Robert Walser and finds its first intersection in the micrographs produced by them. Among the many objects collected during his lifetime, Benjamin seems to have had a special appreciation for children’s books, miniatures and toys. This interest in small items was also manifested in the extreme smallness of his handwriting and in the desire to write one hundred lines in a conventional-size paper – this last one achieved by Walser, who wrote microtexts in a miniscule handwriting and was also the subject of a short essay Benjamin wrote in 1929. If, on the one hand, the miniaturized handwritings of both Benjamin and Walser point to a manner of writing that seems to encrypt the content of texts, on the other hand, the micrographies constructed by both men state a mutual interest in hiding amongst the textual mesh through the suppression of the self in writing. One can, still, liken the miniaturized handwriting with the universe of childhood, be it by the character of the child or the character of the so-called underdog (both present in the works of Walser) or by the protagonism that a childhood-as-Denkbird (image of thought) assumes in Benjamin’s work. Based on these elective affinities, the article seeks to show the miniaturization as a writing procedure employed by both Benjamin and Walser, and it will do so by establishing parallels between the micrographs of the latter and the analytical-speculative commentaries present in Benjamin’s essays and in Walser’s tales. Keywords: Walter Benjamin; Robert Walser; writing; miniaturization; childhood.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Robert Kaufman (Stanford University) challenges trends in recent criticism that have tended to present and apply Walter Benjamin's and Theodor Adorno's theories and practices of the constellation and force-field as if these last stemmed primarily from interventionist Left critique of the aesthetic and the literary. Kaufman's essay “Lyric's Constellation, Poetry's Radical Privilege” shows that on the contrary, Benjamin and Adorno - while certainly holding no brief for “pure” formalist methodology - actually develop the constellation and force-field in urgent response to a kind of Left criticism that sloganeeringly maintains that works of art and culture are historically and sociopolitically determined.

Abstract:
Abstract Disraeli made his maiden speech in parliament on 7 December 1837, in a debate on MPs’ privileges. It was another challenge to Daniel O’Connell, the previous speaker, and was hooted down by jeering O’Connellite Irishmen, though not before its extraordinarily elaborate and affected language had caused much hilarity. After that unpropitious beginning Disraeli avoided publicity for most of the rest of the parliament, generally supporting Sir Robert Peel and attacking the free trade agitators. However, he did urge respect for the Chartist movement.

Full text
Abstract:
Alexander Razborov (1985) developed the approximation method to obtain lower bounds on the size of monotone circuits deciding if a graph contains a clique. Given a "small" circuit, this technique consists in finding a monotone Boolean function which approximates the circuit in a distribution of interest, but makes computation errors in that same distribution. To prove that such a function is indeed a good approximation, Razborov used the sunflower lemma of Erd\H{o}s and Rado (1960). This technique was improved by Alon and Boppana (1987) to show lower bounds for a larger class of monotone computational problems. In that same work, the authors also improved the result of Razborov for the clique problem, using a relaxed variant of sunflowers. More recently, Rossman (2010) developed another variant of sunflowers, now called "robust sunflowers", to obtain lower bounds for the clique problem in random graphs. In the following years, the concept of robust sunflowers found applications in many areas of computational complexity, such as DNF sparsification, randomness extractors and lifting theorems. Even more recent was the breakthrough result of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang (2020), which improved Rossman's bound on the size of hypergraphs without robust sunflowers. This result was employed to obtain a significant progress on the sunflower conjecture. In this work, we will show how the recent progress in sunflower theorems can be applied to improve monotone circuit lower bounds. In particular, we will show the best monotone circuit lower bound obtained up to now, breaking a 20-year old record of Harnik and Raz (2000). We will also improve the lower bound of Alon and Boppana for the clique function in a slightly more restricted range of clique sizes. Our exposition is self-contained. These results were obtained in a collaboration with Benjamin Rossman and Mrinal Kumar.
