Academic literature on the topic 'Benjamin vernon'

Lord Palmerston's constituency of support within the nineteenth-century Liberal party has received relatively little attention from historians. In many ways, however, his strong plebeian following provided the major popular current within Liberalism prior to the emergence of the cult of Gladstone in the mid-1860s. Even after Palmerston's death in 1865, his legacy continued to exercise a powerful influence, and William Ewart Gladstone, Viscount Hartington, Lord Rosebery, and others vied with one another for possession of his mantle and the role as his successor.Historians have shown themselves baffled by this phenomenon of Palmerston's popular appeal. Conservative historians have sought to annex Palmerston for the Tory interest. Themes like “the nation,” the sanctity of British citizenship, and defense of British interests abroad they see as presaging the appeal of Benjamin Disraeli's “imperialism.” Most have combined in portraying Palmerston as a profoundly “illiberal” figure, more Tory than the Tories, whose views sat uneasily alongside such canons of Liberalism as free-trade noninterventionism and Gladstone's graduated program of parliamentary and civil-service reforms. His contribution to the midcentury Liberal consensus was, however, a major one, and must be seen as carrying equal weight with that of such figures as Richard Cobden, John Bright, and J. S. Mill.Recent reappraisals of Liberalism have challenged the notion of a uniform, popular Liberalism in the 1850s and 1860s. In their research Patrick Joyce and James Vernon have emphasized the degree to which Liberalism at a popular level was a fusion of older and newer political forms, incorporating long-standing radical memories of the mass platform, traditional styles of leadership, and established methods of political communication.

En los casi 75 años de existencia del Estado de Israel, su política exterior ha mantenido una cierta continuidad. Algunos primeros ministros como David Ben-Gurión, Menahem Begin, Issac Rabín han dado giros a la política exterior que a largo plazo han condicionado el futuro de Israel. El pasado verano Benjamín Netanyahu salió del gobierno después de más de doce años en el cargo convirtiéndose en el mandatario israelí que más tiempo ha permanecido en el cargo. A lo largo de estos años, Benjamín Netanyahu ha introducido importantes reformas estructurales en país. Uno de estos campos ha sido la política exterior donde se puede considerar que se ha instalado una doctrina propia, la Doctrina Netanyahu. Este artículo tratará de construir los puntos fundamentales que componen esta doctrina de política exterior. Se adoptará una aproximación interpretativa usando los discursos más importantes de Benjamín Netanyahu.

Luego de su exilio en 1974, el poeta chileno Luis Mizón (Valparaíso, 1942) ha sido ampliamente reconocido en Francia, donde reside hasta la fecha. Ha publicado cerca de cincuenta libros, varios de ellos bilingües, traducidos, entre otros, por Roger Caillois y Claude Couffon, en editoriales tan prestigiosas como Gallimard y Du Seuil. Además, ha sido condecorado como Caballero de las Artes y las Letras (1990) por el Ministerio de la Cultura y la Comunicación de Francia y ha recibido el premio Benjamin Fondane (2014) para escritores francófonos. También es director de la revista Confluence poétiques fundada en 2006, y presidente de la asociación del mismo nombre. Presentamos aquí la conferencia inédita dictada por el poeta en el Centro de Literatura Comparada de la Universidad Sorbonne, el año 2009, y que él mismo nos ha cedido junto al afiche promocional durante su última visita a Chile en el verano de 2017

Contemporary Jewish critical scholars share many methodological foundations and viewpoints with their Christian counterparts, but there are nevertheless areas of distinctive concern to Jewish interpreters of the Bible in general and the prophets in particular. This chapter therefore addresses issues faced by Jewish scholars in the field., namely, the place of the prophets in the Tanak, i.e. the Jewish version of the Bible; the historical and social roles of the prophets; and treatment of exile, repentance, and restoration of the people to the Temple and the land of Israel in each of the books of the Latter Prophets, including Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Book of the Twelve Prophets. Examples of scholars treated include Ehud Ben Zvi, Julie Galambush, Moshe Greenberg, Tamar Kamionkowski, Shalom Paul, Dalit Rom-Shiloni, Benjamin Sommer, Emanuel Tov, and the author.

Mauricio Durán Castro examina en este libro esta doble potencia del cine, como una creación que le permite al hombre moderno ampliar su mirada científica y filosófica y, a la vez, atrapar su inconsciente. De esta manera, el cine, con sus creadores y sus espectadores, es estudiado desde las ideas de máquina de guerra, aparato de control, dispositivo de visión y autómata. Este acercamiento crítico invita a revisar la obra de cineastas como Dziga Vertov, Jean Epstein, Sergei Eisenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Roberto Rossellini, Stanley Kubrick, Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, Harun Farocki o Chris Marker, a partir de las conceptualizaciones de importantes pensadores del siglo XX, como Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben y Henri Bergson.

This essay explores notions of alienation and estrangement, contrasting Kafka’s The Trial with the classical accounts offered by Hegel and Marx. A sense of impossibility emerges in Kafka’s work that is new and at the same time tragic. We are estranged from the very conditions of recognizing the conflicting forces that define experience—that is, estranged from the possibility of reconciliation that is clearly necessary, but in no way experienced as real, in spite of the inextinguishable hope that such reconciliation may nevertheless be possible. “Oh, [there is] plenty of hope, an infinite amount of hope—but not for us,” as Kafka famously put it. References are made to Adorno’s and Benjamin’s writings on Kafka. The references to tragic ambiguity, initially presented in relation to the work of Vernant and Naquet, are buttressed philosophically by a reflection on the peculiar modality of the “unreal possibility” of overcoming estrangement.

Dinosaurs Don’t Die, claimed the title of Ann Coates’ 1970 children’s book. Coates’ prose, and the charming illustrations by John Vernon Lord which accompanied it, wondered what would happen if the antediluvian monsters from the Crystal Palace came back to life. In fact, the prehistoric creatures had already refused to die: first resurrected by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and Richard Owen in the early 1850s they had survived the 1936 fire to become Sydenham’s only remaining display. The monsters have lived on, both on a set of South East London islands, but also in many children’s books from the mid-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. In this article I track how the Crystal Palace monsters fit into the evolution of more general representations of extinct creatures in children’s books and exhibitions over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

This chapter mobilises key nineteenth-century aestheticist motifs to render a Sapphic lesbian homoerotic in A Misalliance. Protagonist Blanche Vernon’s nympholepsy is related to the text’s sensual motifs and the intertextual matrix surrounding the ancient Greek poet Sappho. The novel’s early reception is reviewed, including comments by Frank Kermode and John Bayley whose gendered readings obscure the text’s symbolism. On the contrary—emblematic of contested narratives of lesbian sexuality, women’s writing and political subversion in Sapphic texts by Charles Baudelaire and Renée Vivien—Sappho becomes the intertextual springboard for the production of the aesthete. In addition to the sensual motifs of the novel, key behaviours of aestheticism are indicated across the intertextual arc between Brookner’s text and her aestheticist predecessors including Renaissance revival, the desire to live life as art, the homoerotic gaze, the backwards turn, a trans-generational homoerotic and the subversion of bourgeois utilitarianism and family life. The performance of the aesthete is staged across the rhetorical figure of metaleptic prolepsis as supplied by Thomas Bahti’s reading of Walter Benjamin, and Mikhail Bakhtin’s narrative of metamorphosis with its contours of guilt, punishment, redemption, purification and blessedness. Reasserting women’s contribution to Romantic aestheticism, Brookner is read as both women’s writer and aesthete.

Although population in North America grew at an astounding rate in the eighteenth century, Benjamin Franklin believed the vast open lands in North American could easily absorb the growth. He underestimated the tensions created by farm parents seeking land for their children in a time of rising prices. Through the seventeenth century, open lands along the coast and up the rivers provided adequate acreage for the rising generation. Land was distributed by headrights and grants in the South and Middle Colonies; in New England, it was given as townships to groups of settlers. These systems broke down as the population grew and land prices rose. Settlers in search of farms were forced on to lands that were in dispute. Adjoining colonies laid claim to the same areas, or the native people refused to acknowledge purchases by colonies or land companies. In these contested areas, violence broke out between the rival claimants. From the Carolinas to Vermont, farmers used force to defend their titles. They resisted law officers or fought with the Indians to protect the farms that supplied their families. After the Revolution, the new federal government developed systems for distributing land. Conflicts occurred occasionally and Indian wars lasted through the century, but the violence abated as institutions formed to help families acquire land for their children.

At the end of the Nineteenth century William Ramsay, searching for minerals that might concentrate argon or helium, wrote, “One mineral—malacone—gave appreciable quantities of argon; and it is noteworthy that argon was not found except in it (and, curiously, in much larger amount than helium), and in a specimen of meteoric iron. Other specimens of meteoric iron were examined, but were found to contain mainly hydrogen, with no trace of either argon or helium. It is probable that the sources of meteorites might be traced in this manner, and that each could be relegated to its particular swarm.” Finally, sixty years later, this is what Ollie Schaeffer and I now set out to do. Meteoritic iron has been used since prehistoric times: necklaces of the metal beads interlaced with gold are found in the tombs of Egyptian kings, and an inventory of a Hittite temple, describing where on earth their gold and silver came from, lists their iron as having “fallen from the sky.” Yet as late as the early nineteenth century, the reality of meteorites still was not accepted by men of good will. For after all, how could heavy stones and chunks of iron fall out of the sky? And then in 1803 a huge shower of meteorites fell at L’Aigle, France, just at the time that the French Academy of Sciences had convened a meeting to discuss the question. In America no one paid much attention, until on December 14, 1807, at 6:30 in the morning, a bright fireball suddenly blazed through the sky over Vermont and Massachusetts. It was reportedly nearly as bright and big as the moon, until it suddenly exploded and disappeared over the town of Weston, Connecticut, showering the area with stone fragments, as the local media reported. In those days it took a while for the news to travel a few tens of miles, and so it was a few days before Yale’s new professor of chymistry (sic) and natural history, Benjamin Silliman, heard of it. Grabbing his hat and a colleague, Professor James L. Kingsley, he galloped across the state to Weston.

Laboratory data of random directional wave fields have been used to investigate the combined effect of higher order nonlinearity and directional spreading on the wave crest distribution. Different sea states with a variety of combination of steepness and directional spreading have been considered, ranging from long to short crested wave fields. The analysis is also supported by numerical simulations. A 2-parameter Weibull distribution has been fitted to the experimental data and the related parameters have been parameterized as a function of a general version of the Benjamin-Feir Index for directional sea states recently presented by Mori et al. [1]. Long-term distributions of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Benjamin-Feir Index have been studied based on the hindcast data from the North Atlantic and probabilistic models to describe them are proposed.

We conducted experimental and theoretical studies on Benjamin-Feir (BF) instability and revealed a number of new features of the development of instability on the late stages of wave’s evolution. We employ the reduced (truncated) version of Zakharov equations — the multi-wave near-neighbor resonance model (NN model), which takes into account the most effective quasi-resonances with minimum detuning from exact resonance conditions. We show that near-neighbor model for wave interactions can adequately describe the number of new prominent features of BF instability observed in experiments and it is much simpler than Zakharov equation for computation and analysis. Numerical simulations of the full Zakharov equations confirm the main predictions obtained by the NN modeling and both reasonably correspond to the results of available physical experiments. Strong permanent downshifting of spectral maximum for gentle waves without wave breaking is revealed for twice as narrow side band spectral width in comparison with the most unstable case. Regime of multiple downshifting accompanied by wave breaking is discovered for steep waves. Discrete energy flow to higher spectral components takes a place in breaking and no breaking regimes. Results of numerical simulations of Zakharov and NN models reasonably correspond to each other and to our experimental and field observations on wave modulation.

<div class="section abstract">The Current Icing Product (CIP; Bernstein et al. 2005) and Forecast Icing Product (FIP; Wolff et al. 2009) were originally developed by the United States’ National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) under sponsorship of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the mid 2000’s and provide operational icing guidance to users through the NOAA Aviation Weather Center (AWC). The current operational version of FIP uses the Rapid Refresh (RAP; Benjamin et al. 2016) numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to provide hourly forecasts of Icing Probability, Icing Severity, and Supercooled Large Drop (SLD) Potential. Forecasts are provided out to 18 hours over the Contiguous United States (CONUS) at 15 flight levels between 1,000 ft and FL290, inclusive, and at a 13-km horizontal resolution. CIP provides similar hourly output on the same grid, but utilizes geostationary satellite data, ground-based radar data, Meteorological Terminal Air Reports (METARS), lightning data, and voice pilot reports (PIREPs) in addition to the RAP model output to provide near-realtime icing guidance. This paper presents recent enhancements to the prototype versions of CIP and FIP (CIP v2.0 and FIP v2.0, respectively). The enhancements described are intended to take better advantage of enhanced model resolution and microphysics parameterization as well as state-of-the-art observations for icing diagnosis and forecasting. </div>

Um bom relatório arqueológico não só nos informa sobre os estratos de origem dos achados, mas também dá conta dos estratos que primeiro tiveram que ser quebrados.” (Benjamin, 2005).Trabalho com materiais analógicos impressos. Como parte da minha prática artística, eu arranco, corto, rasgo, dobro e colo imagens da performance masculina e do corpo masculino para desmascarar e revelar sua fragilidade. Durante o processo de fabricação, o que geralmente é deixado para trás é uma confusão de lixo não representativo — principalmente texto, planos de fundo e dispositivos usados em uma página de uma revista ou livro. Durante o primeiro bloqueio da COVID na Nova Zelândia, em 2020, tive acesso limitado a um novo material de colagem, além de alguns livros deixados no carro. Como resultado, minha atenção se voltou para as sobras que acabariam na lixeira. Estes pedaços descartados ilustram uma linguagem de gênero, porque o material que uso se destina ao público masculino. Abrangiam músculos, tamanho, competição, violência e tudo o mais que você pudesse esperar da ficção, propaganda e páginas reveladoras que promovem a chamada “masculinidade”, como anuários de filmes, revistas de fisioculturismo, esportes e revistas impressas para adultos, entre outros. Alguns desses livros foram doados, muitos recuperados de lojas de oportunidade e reciclados à medida que eram retirados de bibliotecas pessoais, públicas e universitárias. Quase todas as capas de livros usadas no projeto tiveram suas próprias histórias impressas em ambos os lados. Essas “marcas” revelaram suas origens, contaram suas vidas e retransmitiram a tensão que tiveram de suportar de incontáveis leitores e, claro, de mim! Ao incorporar palavras impressas de um discurso visual, estas novas colagens exigem uma reconsideração do texto e do significado — elas sugerem, mas, ao mesmo tempo, complicam o processo de decodificação textual. Originário do refugo de uma cultura impressa, essas obras tentam reconstruir a cultura material e visual — uma cultura consumida pela busca de atenção e poder. Elas se concentram em sua própria materialidade e, ao mesmo tempo, tentam romper a ordem e revelar seu significado embutido. Reconfiguram o significado para recontar e se reapresentar. Ressuscitadas, essas obras, reunidas, anseiam por voltar às estantes das bibliotecas e reentrar na circulação em um novo formato. Livros com capa dura é um projeto em andamento que reúne 90 colagens analógicas únicas feitas à mão em capas de livro de capa dura e as compila em 300 livros de edição limitada de concertina. O formato desdobrável da publicação revelará não apenas a frente das obras, mas também o verso (laterais).
