Abstract:
This paper describes an analysis of the three U.S. 2016 presidential debates published in The New York Times using Benoit’s (2007a) functional theory. The three presidential debates in the U.S., which occur every four years, remain as the most sensitive political rhetoric that lead to the election of the next U.S. President. These debates include discussion of different issues between the two presidential candidates. One of these issues is immigration. The U.S. presidential debates have been researched by many on various aspects but there has not been a study that focus primarily on the issue of immigration in the three 2016 U.S. presidential debates. All statements regarding this issue between the two presidential candidates, Trump and Clinton, were extracted from these debates and analyzed using Benoit's (2007a) functional theory. Findings revealed that attack statements occurred more than acclaims, and defences were less used than acclaims. The statements included in these debates pertained to policy (30%) and character (70%). As expected, general goals were employed more often using acclaim function rather than attack and defend. However, ideals were employed more often using defence than to acclaim and attack. Due to different contexts, situations, and participants, Benoit's (2007a) functional theory may not be generalized for all debates. This study reveals certain inconsistencies regarding some of the hypotheses of Benoit's (2007a) functional theory in relation to our knowledge of the presidential debates, specifically the issue of immigration.

Abstract:
An organization’s initial response to a crisis can dictate the tone of its sustained response throughout the crisis, as well as stakeholders’ reactions to the incident. When news of the deaths of professional wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife, and their 7-yr-old son broke, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) immediately paid tribute to the superstar. A memorial show to Benoit’s career aired as investigators searched the family’s home. The investigation revealed that Benoit murdered his wife and son before taking his own life, resulting in WWE’s retraction of its earlier tributes. Furthermore, the organization had to respond to the swarm of speculation that steroids—and WWE’s lax policy on their use—were to blame. This case study analyzes WWE’s immediate response strategies to their employee’s family’s deaths and the subsequent strategies used on learning that the employee was implicated. Qualitative analysis of corporate documents and official statements seeks to provide direction regarding how similar organizations should respond in the days immediately after tragic events when employees may be implicated.

Abstract:
Procellariiformes are seabirds showing a set of characters rendering them particularly attractive to research. They are the most diverse seabird group, and probably also the most threatened, with 44. 7% species classified Vulnerable or worse under IUCN criteria. As many seabirds, they are fascinating models to study patterns and processes of population and species differentiation, being under contradictory evolutionary forces: on the one hand being extremely vagile allow them to disperse very far, which is supposed to enhance gene flow between populations, thus reducing their differentiation and diversification ; on the other hand, being extremely philopatric, they often return to breed in their natal colony, a pattern supposed to enhance population differentiation. Living in the ocean, they also constitute good models to investigate differentiation processes in the absence of physical barrier to gene flow. In addition, partly as a result of the opposite evolutionary forces just described, their taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships are complex, have proved very frustrating over the decades and have therefore been in a state of flux over the years. The development of molecular ecology in the last two decades have provided some new powerful tools to elucidate some of the phylogenetic uncertainties, to understand the observed phylogeographic patterns and have a better grasp at the underlying processes promoting diversification in these birds. These tools also allow a better understanding of population structure and relationships and can greatly help to the prioritisation and design of conservation actions directed at conserving these organisms. In this thesis, by means of molecular ecology tools, I investigated the phylogenetic relationships and phylogeography of several taxa belonging to family Procellariidae, the most speciose in order Procellariiformes. I studied these at two levels: first at the genus level by describing phylogenetic relationships in genus Pseudobulweria, probably the most endangered seabird genus in the world; and second at the taxon and population level I focused on the Macaronesian group of gadfly petrels and on the Gould’s petrel complex, in particular regarding the relationships between its Australian and New Caledonian subspecies. Using a multiloci approach for each of these investigations provided a mean to improve our understandings : in Pseudobulweria the species tree approach used allowed inferring the phylogenetic relationships between all the taxa in the genus for the first time and to solve a taxonomic issue regarding the status of Beck’s petrel ; in Northeast Atlantic gadfly petrels, I showed that the divergence of the three taxa living in that region is much more recent than previously thought and that the three populations deserve at least the status of Evolutionary Significant Units ; in Gould’s petrel I showed that the two population currently recognised as subspecies are not structured genetically and the lineages have not diverged. These investigations underline the necessity to incorporate new methods and multiple loci when investigating the phylogenetic and phylogeographic patterns in organisms to fully capture their complexity

Sherman, Alan James. "The imaginary universe of Jacques Benoit." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29531.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of three of the.literary works of Jacques Benoit: Jos Carbone, Les Princes and Gisèle et le serpent. It will be an attempt to combine different spatial elements of the texts, literal and symbolic, in order to define and explore the imaginary universe of our author. In our first text, Jos Carbone, we look to establish the role of the unconscious. The background predominance of night and dark elements, unseen invaders, habitations, in short, the forest in general appears as a metaphor for the unconscious mind of the hero Jos Carbone. In our analysis, we attempt to explore this imaginary universe with intent to establish the theme of the territorial quest as it might apply to the central couple Jos and Myrtie. In our analysis of Benoit's novel, Les Princes, we endeavour to explore the allegorical world with an emphasis on the nonverbal communication of both the topography and the inhabitants of la Ville. We observe the confrontation of men and dogs in an effort to examine the role of what is considered civil or animal, pet or prey. The impotency and frustration of Coquin society coupled with corrupt Grâligean authority evoke the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau on social inequality. We shall, therefore, attempt to apply some of his beliefs to imaginary elements of the novel. Finally, we shall examine the unvoiced refutation of the Grâligean's verbal law and the possible future outcome of la Ville's violent upheaval. Gisèle et le serpent will be studied in terms of a creative quest to write on the part of the hero and narrator, Gregoire Rabouin. We will take into account the displacement, transformation and constant motion of the text as well as the combination of fantastic and conventional elements. The role of the protagonist Gisèle is to be examined in terms of her capacity as role model, motivation to write and magical force behind the liberation of the hero's creative drive. We shall show the conflict created by the doctor's frustration with his rational profession and examine the unblocking of his creativity as portrayed by his relinquishing of control. Furthermore, an analysis of the parodies of his occupation, the deformation of language and patients as well as the fairy-tale format of the novel will confirm his desire to renounce medicine in favour of literary creation. Finally, we see the completion of Rabouin's narrative voyage in the discovery of his ability to write. In conclusion we shall state general observations about the imaginary universe as it applies to the comparison of our three texts. Specifically, this will entail the unconscious world, the violent and disruptive element and Benoit's tendency to stray from the rules of standard literary genres.
Arts, Faculty of
French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of
Graduate

Paris 11, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA111001.

Abstract:
By the middle of the thirteenth century, the law of saints and relics, which had grown out of custom, contributed to the developement of roman centralization. This tendency led the papacy to retain, in an initial stage, the exclusive right to conduct the canonization of saints. In order to deny the bishops all power of approbation of sainthood, the popes invented a new form of recognition in the specific category of the blessed, that of beatification. Permanently codified in the beginning of the seventeenth century, this manner of approbation was conceived as the first stage in a long and complex process culminating in the canonization of the saint. Likewise, the papacy applied itself to assert its control over questions concerning relics. Its self-attribution of the monopoly over approbation of new relics was achieved despite various opposition and legal hesitation. It controlled the relics' manifestations of sainthood and regulated the legal consequences associated with their approbation. Locally the bishops nonetheless embodied the most competent authority to enforce the cult of relics. Having retained the right to approve old relics, they usually undertook all operations of authentification. It was they who set the conditions for exhibiting and preserving these precious remains. The special nature of relics imposed limits on their ownership. Whether for their appropriation or their transferral, the episcopal authorities exerted an extremely watchful control in which the pope intervened in the most serious conflicts. In the course of the modern period the law of saints and relics all in all underwent a very linear evolution with two essentials aims : assuring the papacy's control of the approbation of saints and guarantering the universal respect due to their earthly remains

Abstract:
According to environmental standard, the amount of sulfur contained in gasoline, responsible for pollutants, are limited to less than 10 ppm since January 2009. The conventional hydrodesulfurization of the FCC naphtha cut, which represents more than 30%vol of the commercial gasoline and contains most of the sulfur, allows the required desulfurization rate. However, this process can cause high olefin hydrogenation, diminishing the gasoline quality through a decrease of the octane number. Another possibility to this process is to achieve the alkylation of the sulfides by olefins contained in the feedstock in order to increase their molecular weight and allow their removal by distillation. The alkylation of two model thiophenic compounds, 3-methylthiophene and benzothiophene, with olefins (1-hexene or 2-methyl-1-pentene) was studied at 85°C under atmospheric pressure, over different solid acid catalysts: zeolites (HY, HBEA and HMCM-22), heteropolyanions (H3PW12O40 or H3PMo12O40) supported over silica (disordered commercial silica or SBA-15). Significant influence of the porous architecture of zeolites has been demonstrated, depending on the sulfur compound to be alkylated: the HMCM-22 is the most effective in alkylation of 3-methylthiophene whereas the HY zeolite is the most interesting in benzothiophene alkylation. The heteropolyanion based on tungsten supported on commercial silica or SBA15 appeared as a promising catalyst for this reaction

Abstract:
Regula monachorum!

Abstract:

Abstract:
Faculty today are challenged to meet the individualized learning needs of what is frequently a disparate student population while engaging in meaningful assessment of student learning outcomes. Learning styles and levels of preparation vary among students especially in the area of mathematics and the ability to diagnosis deficiencies and remedy needs can increase student success. Computerized homework and test management systems complete with interactive tutorials and targeted remediation exercises are being presented as a means of meeting the individual instructional needs of learners while assisting faculty through the automation of assessment. In particular, a number of studies have indicated positive student learning outcomes results when these programs are implemented into mathematics instruction (Butler & Zerr, 2005; Kennedy, Ellis, Ojen, & Benoit, 2007; Zerr, 2007). The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a Historically Black University that primarily serves first generation, low income, and minority learners. Over the years, the number of students requiring remedial mathematics instruction has increased dramatically. In order to increase student learning outcomes success, as well as the persistence rates of students, an online homework and assessment system was implemented into all sections of remedial mathematics. Features of the system utilized include interactive tutorial exercises, an online tutoring center, an e-book, sample problems and answers, diagnostic analysis, targeted exercises, online assignments and quizzes, and an online grade book. This paper presents the findings of study that examined student satisfaction and perception of value with respect to the usage of this system as well as impact on student persistence and performance. The results of this study were mixed and marked by high levels of neutrality; however, the findings did indicate that most students felt that the system was easy to use, a valuable learning tool, successful at having helped them to learn course concepts, and an aide that helped them to perform better on their assignments. At the same time, most student responded that they were not satisfied the system. The analysis of the student performance data noted a significant decrease in student withdrawal rates and a marked increase in pass rates for the course under consideration.
