Abstract:
AbstractPopulations of the common hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius have undergone widespread decline as a result of habitat conversion and hunting for bushmeat and, increasingly, for ivory. North Cameroon holds important populations of large mammals, including the hippopotamus. The species' status and population trend are poorly known, and led CITES to suspend trade in hippopotamus trophies in 2013. Using the methodology of surveys conducted during 1976–1987, we conducted counts of the hippopotamus in Bénoué National Park during the wet season of 2011 and dry season of 2013, and drew on unpublished biannual density counts conducted by the Garoua Wildlife College, Cameroon, during 1989–2010. Counts along the 100 km stretch of the Bénoué River in the Park indicated a reduction from 400 individuals in 1987 to 188 in 2013. However, linear densities along a 15–32 km stretch in proximity to the Park headquarters and two tourist camps were constant during 1976–2013 (c. 3.7 individuals km−1). Hippopotamus distribution was negatively associated with the presence of the camps of gold diggers, which occupied the northern half of the Park. Observations of antelopes suggested they had a comparable distribution, unlike primates, which were distributed relatively evenly. Our results show the importance of year-round conservation presence in the Park, which could be achieved with adequate personnel, a functional road system, and reinforcement of operations in neighbouring sport-hunting areas.

Abstract:
Abstract:We studied the effects of savanna fires on the structure of local ungulate communities in a West African woodland savanna. The distribution of 11 ungulate species over 9−15 burned sites (the number of which increased as burning activity continued during the dry season) and 7−13 unburned sites was compared with a variety of null models or randomized ‘virtual communities’. Five different parameters of community structure were examined: body mass distribution, co-occurrence patterns, species richness, species density and guild dominance. Overall, ungulate species were not randomly distributed over burned and unburned sites. The regular spacing of body masses in the set of species recorded on burned and unburned sites indicated competition, since species similar in body mass are more likely to compete than species of different size. However, co-occurrence patterns on burned sites were random, indicating absence of competition at fine spatial scales due to differential habitat use within the burned landscape. Although the attractiveness of the regrowth on burned sites resulted in higher numbers of ungulates compared with unburned sites, species richness was not different. Grazers were the dominant guild on burned sites, but there were no differences in species richness or species density between grazers and browsers on unburned sites.

Abstract:
English Title: Qualitative assessment of fodder species present in the Bénoué division (North Cameroon)Pastoral land (areas) worldwide are undergoing rapid decline as a result of urbanization (development). This often leads to a large decrease in the quantity and quality of available fodder. This study was aimed at evaluating quantitatively the various fodder species present within the Bénoué division. The method used for identification of fodder species (herbaceous and ligneous) was through interviews (surveys), conducted with animal-grazers (breeders) pasturing their flocks (cattle, goats and sheep) in the field and using available keys for fodder for pinpointing. The existing pastoral areas (zones), varies in quality and quantity of flora depending on the location where it is found. Several fodder species exist, belonging to about forty-one (41) classes of species. Among the twenty (20) fodder species best valorized by livestock, five (5) ligneous are most preferred (Prosopis africana, Daniella oliveri, Acacia sieberiana, Stereospermum kunthianum et Balanites aegyptica). As for the herbaceous, same is true for two (2) species, Acroceras amplectens et Pennisetum pedicellatum. More than a dozen species happen to be endangered. Thus, if nothing is done in a few years in order to conserve and preserve these endangered species they might become threatened as a result of gradual reduction in terms of their flora abundance within the different localities. In addition, a study relating to the nutritive elements and a quantitative study of these fodder species met must be undertaken, for better enclosing the species to be preserved and best spaces offering of better fodder resources. Keywords: Pastoral areas, flora abundance, livestock grazers, keys of identifications.

Abstract:
In recent years, wildlife policies that consider the participation of stakeholders have been promoted. An understanding of the stakeholders' attitudes towards conservation and existing policies are critical in designing new policies or sustainable conservation strategies. This paper examines stakeholders' (local people, park staff and professional hunter guides) attitudes, towards the Bénoué Wildlife Conservation Area (BWCA) and towards Cameroonian wildlife policy. The BWCA encompasses the Bénoué National Park and its surrounding hunting concessions that also include some villages. Both the Park and the hunting concessions are two categories of protected areas. Data were collected using informal interviews and questionnaires administered to 114 households from three communities, 17 park staff and seven professional hunter guides. Local people's attitudes towards protected areas depended on the management category of the particular protected area. Local people were positive towards the existence of the Park, but negative towards the system of hunting concession areas. There was local variation between communities concerning these attitudes. Local people were generally positive to maintaining the present Park area, but preferred a reduction in the size of the hunting concessions. Both Park staff and professional hunter guides expressed concern about present management strategies and the extent of illegal resource exploitation. Despite having poor knowledge of the current Cameroonian wildlife policy, most of the local households expressed support for it, but called for increased local involvement in management, off-take and the harvesting of benefits from both Park and hunting concession activities. The Park staff were sceptical about local participation in this context and saw such endeavours as a threat to a sound biodiversity management scheme. The findings indicate the need to strengthen current wildlife policy, promote the involvement of local people and empower the Park staff, both in terms of resources and in terms of skills in interacting with local people. The revised policy should be designed so as to vary according to the category of protected area and allow site-specific adaptations. Local people must experience reduced incurred costs and increased incomes from the Park. An environmental education programme is recommended to extensively disseminate the policy to user groups in the area.

Abstract:
In order to assess the prevalence of Salmonella contaminations in the city of Garoua, this study investigated the research and serotyping of Salmonella strains within the traditional chicken industry at the poultry slaughterhouse of the central market of Garoua in Bénoué, Northern Region of Cameroon. Still very present throughout Cameroon, this structure can represent a source of contamination as well as a zoonotic hazard. For this purpose, the study was carried out on 400 chicken carcasses and analyses were performed on cloacal swabs, by bacteriological culture and confirmed by biochemical analyses and PCR to detect the invA gene specific to Salmonella sp. Thus, 05 strains of Salmonella were isolated, a contamination prevalence of 1.3% observed. Serotyping of the isolates resulted in the identification of five different serovars, including Hadar, Idikan, Mbandaka, Infantis and Anatum (n=1, 20% each). These serotypes developed resistance to tetracycline, amikacin, nalidixic acid, Kanamycin and cephalothin. Antibiotics available on the market at low cost and used without precise diagnosis and in insufficient or overdosed doses in the veterinary environment, both in food and for the treatment of bacterial infections. This study has an important impact because it showed for the first time the presence of Salmonella in the traditional chicken industry in the Northern Region of Cameroon. The project also highlighted the role that this type of structure can have in the maintenance and circulation of pathogens within animal and human populations. Indeed, in view of the weak biosecurity measures applied, family farming systems represent an important risk factor for the spread of Salmonella in both animals and humans, and could be resistant to certain antibiotics.

Abstract:
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic vector borne infectious disease of major medical and veterinary importance particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is dearth of epidemiological knowledge of the disease in Cameroon. We conducted a cross-sectional study (January 2016–January 2017) to investigate the seroprevalence and potential risk factors of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in sheep and goats in the North region of Cameroon. Stratified sampling approach was used to select herds where sera were collected from 680 randomly selected small ruminants (355 goats and 325 sheep) in eight localities (Kismatari, Lagdo, Pitoa, Garoua, Bocklé, Dembo, Poli and Touboro) within three administrative divisions (Bénoué, Mayo-Rey and Faro) in the North region. Anti-RVFV antibodies were detected using a competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), while a capture ELISA was used for the detection of specific RVFV-Immunoglobulin M (Ig-M) antibodies. We evaluated the associated potential risk factors of RVF in small ruminants based on observations of animal-related intrinsic and extrinsic factors in combination with serological results. The results revealed that 3.4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2–5.1%) of sampled animals and 24.6% (95% CI: 15.1–37.1%) of 65 sampled herds were seropositive for anti-RVFV antibodies and no difference in seropositivity between sheep and goats at individual animal as well as at herd levels was observed. Localities along hydrographic or large water banks such as Kismatari (OR: 14.333, (95% CI: 1.436–145.088)) and Pitoa (OR = 11.467 (95% CI: 1.249–50.306)) were significantly associated to RVFV antibody seroprevalence in a simple logistic regression. In addition, the multiple regression analysis showed that age and access to water points significantly influenced RVFV antibody seroprevalence in small ruminants. This study revealed that anti-RVFV antibodies are present in sheep and goats in the North region of Cameroon. It highlights the likely endemic circulation of RVFV in the considered localities despite the absence of clinical cases reported in animals or humans. Under these conditions, it is necessary to set up an early warning, surveillance and control strategy based on epizootic risk.

Abstract:
Apple scab, caused by the ascomycete Venturia inaequalis, is an important disease of apple (Malus domestica) worldwide and is generally managed with intensive applications of fungicides or, for specific markets, by planting of resistant cultivars. Currently, eight races of the pathogen have been defined on the basis of their ability to overcome sources of resistance used by plant breeders (2). We undertook the identification of apple scab races present in Spain as a necessary step for the deployment of resistant cultivars. Spore suspensions (2.5 × 105 spores per ml) were prepared from fresh lesions of apple scab collected from apple trees in commercial or domestic orchards located in the northeastern Spanish provinces of Gerona, Guipúzcoa, and Navarra. To identify races 1 to 7, the suspensions were used to inoculate cv. Gala and six differential apple clones with five replicates. Cultivar Gala was used as a universal susceptible control. The differential apple clones included X2250, X2253 (Geneva), X2249, X2225, X2596 (Prima), and X6518 (M. floribunda 821) (1,4). All leaves were assessed on each inoculated shoot 17 days after inoculation, and the type of symptoms were scored using the scale of Chevalier et al. (3). Sporulation was evaluated on seven replicate leaf discs (1 cm in diameter) for each combination of inoculum and plant host (4). All the inocula tested produced typical apple scab symptoms and sporulation (>106 conidia per cm2) on cv. Gala. Races 2, 3, 5, and 6 were identified on the basis of the elicitation of typical disease symptoms with abundant sporulation (>3 × 106 conidia per cm2) on clones X2250, X2253, X2225, and X2596, respectively. Races 2 and 6 were present in inocula from Gerona, Guipúzcoa, and Navarra, whereas races 3 and 5 were identified only in an inoculum from Tudela, Navarra. An inoculum from La Tallada, Gerona, was assigned to race 1 because it produced typical disease symptoms and sporulation only on cv. Gala, while the differential clones were scored as resistant. In Santesteban, Navarra, a monosporic isolate of V. inaequalis, designated VIP28, was obtained in the field from a single lesion in a 2-year-old tree of clone 2.1.1, which is resistant to race 1. VIP28 produced lesions typical of weak virulence in clone X6518 and produced a significant degree of sporulation (0.8 × 106 conidia per cm2), whereas the differential clones for races 2 to 6 were scored as resistant, indicating that this isolate can be classified as race 7 (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of races of V. inaequalis present in Spain. References: (1) G. Bénaouf and L. Parisi. Phytopathology 90:236, 2000. (2) V. G. M. Bus et al. Abstract:
The purpose of research to determine and contribute in more efficient services to geoinformation stakeholders, as well as to give positive impact on increasing income in geo business sector, voluntary based web system for online usage of geoinformation in Kosovo has been developed. The method used was puting in to one place many sourcec via WMS and WFS services, by creating thematic SDI, in order to have online system with dynamic data comming from official databases with update from last day on 5 pm. System is open for usage by all interested parts, however official registration is required. It contains geoinformation from many databases such as cadastral, orthophoto, municipal, and basemaps from open layers. The results show that the system is extendable and it is permanently including new datasets based on the user requirements. All available data is linked via web services, which gives an opportunity to users to use the updated version of datasets as they are published by responsible institution via www (world wide web). Abstract:
AbstractInformation on the population of common hippopotamus ( Hippopotamus amphibius ) in Cameroon is limited. Consequently, management decisions are based on guesses. We surveyed common hippos on the River Djerem in Mbam-Djerem National Park, from April to June 2001 by sailing on the river at 1.5 km/h and counting hippopotamus that emerged to the water surface. We also recorded their tracks along the river banks. We found at least 18 hippos in April and 79 during May–June on the river, suggesting that there were either different numbers at each of the periods or approximately the same numbers, but with individuals responding differently to the physiological and noise stimuli used in the study. However, the observation of numerous fresh outlet tracks of hippos at pools where they were not directly sighted suggests higher numbers on the river during each of the periods. Hunting of hippopotamus in the past for trophies (canines) threatened their survival and accounts for the relatively low numbers observed compared to an earlier survey in the River Bénoué. There are hopes for a future population increase with increased law enforcement in the recently created Mbam-Djerem National Park.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Ecosystems provide humanity with goods and services known as ecosystem services. The value of these services represents a basis for political decision-making. To be sure that these decisions are made on a valid basis, policymakers require an understanding of the biophysical processes involved. This study was carried out around two forest reserves (Alibori-Supérieur and Ouénou-Bénou) in Northern Benin. It aimed to highlight the knowledge of the surrounding communities and their perceptions about the importance of the ecosystem services provided by these forest reserves as well as the factors that influence their knowledge and perceptions. Methods Primary data were collected from 25 group discussions in 25 villages surrounding the forest reserves based on predefined ecosystems services of the Millennium Ecosystems Assessment (MA). Multiple linear regression models were used to examine how socio-economic characteristics of the communities influenced the ecosystem services identification rate. Perceptions of importance, levels of satisfaction, and trends of services provided were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Our results showed that education level, poverty index, household size, and proximity to forests played an important role in the variation in knowledge of ecosystem services (P < 0.05). Provisioning services (such as crops supply, fuelwood, lumber, wild food, and medicinal plants) were mostly identified by the poorest villages located very close to the forests (P < 0.05). The importance of the provided services for well-being has been unanimously recognized. The most recognized cultural services were education and knowledge facilitation (84%) and spiritual value (76%). Climate regulation (84%) and pollination (84%) were the best-known regulating services. However, supporting services (soil formation and pest regulation) that are important for improving production systems were unknown to the communities. Conclusion Education level, poverty index, and village proximity to the forest were important predictors of regulating and supporting services identification. But use of non-tangible services by local rural communities will require more emphasis on targeted environmental education specifically designed according to the needs of each group.

Jote, Tamiru. "Exploring Employment Status and Education–Job Match among Engineering Graduates in Ethiopia: Policy Implications." International Journal of African Higher Education 4, no. 1 (December 22, 2017). http://dx.doi.org/10.6017/ijahe.v4i1.10249.

Abstract:
The article explores the employment status and education–job match among engineering graduates in Ethiopia between the years 2009 and 2013, and implications on the expansion of engineering programs. The fndings reveal that engineering graduates have had a good employment status in the fve years of the study, with an average employment rate of 80.3 percent. However, an increasing trend of graduate unemployment is observed. Substantial variations are observed among graduates of the various engineering disciplines and between men and women: civil engineers have better employment prospects, and the employment status of women is consistently lower. The fndings also indicate that the education–job mismatch is both vertical and horizontal, and affects more than a third of the graduates (41.5 percent). Thus, there is a need to refocus on improving the quality of engineering education, and the decision to expand engineering programs should be based on insightful higher education planning and labor market assessment.
