Possiel, Benjamin Allen. "Point of Fixity Analysis of Laterally Loaded Bridge Bents." NCSU, 2008. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-11192007-102130/.

Abstract:
Research work in this thesis deals with the effects of lateral loads in the longitudinal direction on a substructure?s point of fixity. Full scale tests were performed to model and test a section of a bridge where the superstructure is connected to the substructure through elastomeric bearing pads. The connection rotational stiffness between the super and substructure was measured as an effect of applying a lateral load to the foundation element and creating a moment at the connection joint. A circular concrete pile, square concrete pile, and steel H-pile were tested in connection with both type V and type VI elastomeric bearing pads. The response of these full scale tests were then modeled in FB-MultiPier as tested and as an equivalent single foundation element. The model response was then compared to the measured results. Through the use of FB-MultiPier, three existing North Carolina bridges? foundation elements were analyzed to determine an effective range of partial head fixity and its compounding effects on the development of a foundation element?s depth to fixity.

Bazáez, Gallardo Ramiro Andrés Gabriel. "Achieving Operational Seismic Performance of RC Bridge Bents Retrofitted with Buckling-Restrained Braces." PDXScholar, 2017. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3476.

Full text
Abstract:
Typical reinforced concrete (RC) bridges built prior to 1970 were designed with minimum seismic consideration, leaving numerous bridges highly susceptible to damage following an earthquake. In order to improve the seismic behavior of substandard RC bridges, this study presents the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge bents retrofitted and repaired using Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRBs) while considering subduction zone earthquake demands. In order to reflect displacement demands from subduction ground motions, research studies were conducted to develop quasi-static loading protocols and then investigate their effect on structural bridge damage. Results suggested that subduction loading protocols may reduce the displacement ductility capacity of RC bridge columns and change their failure mode. The cyclic performance of reinforced concrete bridge bents retrofitted and repaired using BRBs was experimentally evaluated using large-scale specimens and the developed loading histories. Three BRB specimens were evaluated with the aim of assessing the influence of these components on the overall performance of the retrofitted and repaired bents. Additionally, subassemblage tests were conducted in an effort to study the response of these elements and to allow for refined nonlinear characterization in the analysis of the retrofitted and repaired systems. The results of the large-scale experiments and analytical studies successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing buckling-restrained braces for achieving high displacement ductility of the retrofitted and repaired structures, while also controlling the damage of the existing vulnerable reinforced concrete bent up to an operational performance level.

Abstract:
Seismic design of highway bridges has improved as a result of the experience gained from large earthquakes of the last thirty years. Ductility demand and reserved capacity are extremely important response measures used in new bridge designs to assess target damage levels. However, the application of practical design approaches specified in bridge design codes is not well-defined for bridges over flexible foundations. Within the scope of this research, thirty two bridge models having varying column aspect ratio, amount of column longitudinal reinforcement and foundation flexibility parameters are investigated through a series of analyses such as response spectrum analysis and inelastic time-history analysis under &ldquo
safety evaluation earthquake&rdquo
hazard level with a return period of 1000 years, and push-over analysis. Using the results of analyses, seismic response of the investigated bridges are identified with several measures such as displacement capacity over demand ratio, global displacement ductility demand, and response modification factor, along with maximum concrete and steel strains of columns. A correlation between concrete and steel strains and seismic response measure values is constructed to estimate damage levels with commonly used response measures. The findings of this research revealed that global displacement ductility demand is not a favorable response measure for assessing damage levels. On the other hand, displacement capacity over demand ratios can be suggested for estimation of damage levels especially where foundation flexibility effects are extensive as system yielding is not taken into consideration.

Abstract:
The following collection, Bent, is comprised of 11 stories and one novel excerpt. The stories, while they stand alone as individual works, are tied together by their questions. "Boy Box," "Lemons," "Claws," "Heart Feathers," "Hot," "Empire," and "How We Were Tamed" experiment with magic and suspension of disbelief in the most overt ways, while "Saints," "Glaciology," and "Cartographers and Creeps" seek instead to work within the constraints of folklore through less stated modes by adopting more of the atmospheric qualities of the tradition. The following stories are curious about the way fairy tales can be reworked to represent diverse, non-heteronormative, worldviews, while dealing explicitly with issues of sexuality, identity politics, and loss of innocence. The excerpt from Swallow is lifted from the opening pages of a novel in progress. Swallow follows Claire during a year at college as she investigates issues of art-making, obsession, bodies, and same sex attraction. There is also an overarching, more dystopian theme that deals with the climate crisis and raises questions about value making in a world that is degrading around us.

Abstract:

My paintings are abstractions of the repeated patterns, shapes and structure I see and experience every day. My inspiration comes in many forms: found objects dropped or discarded by others, plowed and planted acres of soil, fence posts along edges of fields, blasts of train whistles and the silent spaces between them. All share similarities of repetition-the positive/negative relationship of reoccurrences with a cadence of structure and order but which never can be fully captured or contained.

Parsons, Daniel R. "Flow separation in meander bends." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2003. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14757/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most investigations of river meanders have concentrated on classical bends that have a helical flow structure through the pool, which is carried through into the entrance of the next bend. However, it is known that flow separation can occur at the outer bank before the bend apex or at the inner bank after the apex and that this results in the breakdown of the classical flow model. Although some of the controls and the implications of flow separation are now known, the frequency of occurrence, threedimensional (3-D) flow structure, sediment dynamics, controls on separation presence, and full geomorphological implications are poorly understood. This thesis uses a combination of fieldwork and 3-D numerical flow modelling (computational fluid dynamics, CFD) to investigate meander bends where flow separation and recirculation zones are present. An initial reconnaissance survey of over 600 bends revealed that flow separation is common, being present in approximately 50% of bends. The survey also identified high bend angles of tum and the high angles of flow impingement onto the outer bank as important controls on the presence of separation. Investigations in a 22 bend sub-set indicated that expansions in channel width, breaks in bank-line curvature and the angle of inflow, as governed by upstream planform, were important in generating flow separation. Detailed fieldwork combined with validated and verified time-averaged CFD modelling in three bends with separation zones enabled identification and examination of the 3-D flow fields. The simulations reveal that the flow structure in bends with separation differs considerably from the classical flow model, with the helical motion found in classical bends being very intense in the bend entrance but dissipating at or just after the bend apex. The turbulent flow structures produced by the shear layer between the downstream and recirculating flow are also investigated in the field bends and attempts at modelling transient flow structures with large eddy simulation (LES) in a simple open channel flow expansion are detailed. The geomorphological, sedimentological, and ecological implications of both the time-averaged and the transient flow structures within the bends are examined and discussed.

The outbreak of the 2008 financial crisis put the fiscal policy again in the spotlight as a way to boost economic activity. In this paper, we analyze the IPI tax exemption on vehicles aiming to contribute in two directions: i) estimate and calibrate a small scale DSGE model for Brazil that incorporates this aspect; and ii) evaluate the impact of this specific policy on the main macroeconomic variables through the lens of the model. Our results suggest that the impact of this fiscal stimulus was initially positive in boosting economic activity, however with diminishing effects.

Ames, Kelly. "Novel bent-core metallomesogens." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2005. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11933/.

Full text
Abstract:
Novel polycatenar bent-core Schiff-base metallomesogens from derivatives of 1,1 O-phenanthroline ([MCb(LPhen-n)]), 2,2-bipyridine ([MCb(L Bipy-n)]) and 5,5'-dimethyldipyrromethane ((tc)_[M(LDipy-n)] and ex-[M(L Dipy-n)]) have been investigated in this body of work. The mesomorphic properties of these first- and second-row transition metal complexes have been studied. Further to the examination of the compounds in the liquid crystalline state, single crystal X-ray studies of short chain analogues were performed to determine the coordination geometry and the degree of selfassembly of the molecules in the solid state. Chapter 1 introduces the field of liquid crystals and metallomesogens, with a focus on thermotropic liquid crystals and their nomenclature, physical properties and applications. The historical background of the field is briefly explored and previous research on bent-core metallomesogens from the Schroder group in Nottingham has been reviewed. The characterisation of liquid crystalline mesophases, namely by polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction, are described. Further discussion is dedicated to the X-ray diffraction patterns generated by columnar mesophases. The chapter finishes with a description of the aims of the project. Chapter 2 commences with an introduction to liquid crystals derived from 1,1 O-phenanthroline. Following this is a description of the synthesis and characterisation of mesomorphic metal-free ligands, LPhen-n (n = 10, 12, 14, 16), four novel series of metallomesogens and two non-mesomorphic series of complexes derived from 1,10-phenanthroline, [MCb(LPhen-n)] (M = Mn2+, Fe2~, C02+, Ni2+, Cu2+. Zn2+~ LPhen = 2.9-bis-[3' A ',5' -tri(alkoxy)phenyliminon1ethyl]- 1,1 O-phenanthroline: n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16). Structural determination by single crystal X-ray diffraction of the analogous methoxy complexes [MCb(LPhen-l)] (M = Mn2+, C02+, Ni2+, Zn2+), and the complex without any lateral aliphatic groups [CuCb(LPhen-O)], revealed the metal (II) complexes to have either distorted trigonal bipyramidal, square pyramidal or octahedral coordination geometry. The mesomorphic behaviour of the complexes [MCb(LPhen-n)] (M = Mn2+, C02+, Ni2+, Zn2+; n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) and the metal-free ligands LPhen-n (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) is columnar (with the exception of the non-mesomorphic [CoCb(LPhen-8)]), and the 2D symmetries of these mesophases vary between hexagonal, rectangular and oblique. Chapter 3 is introduced with a discussion of liquid crystalline compounds derived from 2,2' -bipyridine. Subsequently, the synthesis and characterisation of four new series of metallomesogens and two nonmesomorphic compounds derived from 2,2' -bipyridine, [MCb(L Bipy-n)] (M = Mn2+, Fe2+, C02+ Cu2+ and n = 16; M = Ni2+, Zn2+ and n = 10, 12, 14, 16; L Bipy = 6,6' -bis-[3' ,4',5' -tri(alkoxy)phenyliminomethyl]-2,2' -bipyridine) are detailed. Single crystal X-ray diffractometry revealed the coordination geometry• of [MnCb(LBipy-l)], [CoCb(LBipY-l)] and [NiCb(LBipy-l)] to be octahedral, whereas [ZnCb(LBipY-l)] is distorted trigonal bipyramidal. The complexes [MCb(L Bipy-n)] (M = Mn2+, C02+ and n = 16; M = Ni2+, Zn2+ and n = 10, 12, 14, 16) exhibit mesomorphic character and again generate columnar mesophases. Finally, Chapter 4 begins with a discussion on pyrrole-derived liquid crystals. Consequently, the synthesis and characterisation of hexacatenar d compoun s [M(LDipH/)] \: (M -- 2H ,Zn 2+, Pd2+.' n = 10 ,_l', 1'1"t o 16', x. = 1, ,-), tetracatenar compounds tc_[M(LDip~-16)1\ (M = 2H, Zn2+, Pd2T ; x = 1, 2) and extended dicatenar compounds ex_[M(LDipy-n)]x (M = 2H, Zn2+, Pd2+; x = 1. 2) are described. Characterisation by X-ray diffraction of single crystals of [Zn(LDipy-l)h, ex-[Zn(LDipy-l)h show they exhibit a distorted tetrahedral geometry, forming double stranded helical structures, while ex-[Pd(L Dipyl)] has a distorted square planar geometry. The metal-free ligands H2LDip~-1/ (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) and complexes [Zn(LDipy-16)h and [Pd(LDipy-n)] (n = 12, 14, 16) all exhibit narrow mesomorphic temperature ranges and unidentified mesophases. The tetracatenar compound tc_[Zn(LDipy-16)h generates a columnar hexagonal mesophase and the complex tc_[Pd(LDipy-16)] generates an unidentified liquid crystalline phase, whereas the metal-free ligand tc-H2L Dipy-16 has no mesomorphic character. Finally, two of the extended dicatenar compounds ex-H 2L DipY-16 and ex-[Zn(L Dipy-16)h are non-mesomorphic, while ex-[Pd(L Dipy-16)] was found to have a smectic A phase.

Grundy, Isla Mary. "Regeneration and management of Brachystegia spiciformis Benth. and Julbernardia globiflora (Benth.) Troupin in Miombo woodland, Zimbabwe." Thesis, University of Oxford, 1995. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:2207086c-328c-4200-a243-f1391be3b1ce.

Full text
Abstract:
Miombo is dry deciduous woodland dominated by leguminous tree species, covering a significant area of Africa south of the equator, including large parts of Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zaire, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This woodland type reaches its driest, most species-poor limit in Zimbabwe. Brachystegia spiciformis and Julbernardia globiflora are the two main dominants of the drier form of miombo. Miombo woodland represents a rich and diverse resource base for small-scale farmers throughout the region, the importance of which has been ignored in the past by managers and policy-makers. The development of sustainable management strategies for this resource has therefore been hampered by a lack of knowledge. For this reason, the overall objective of this research was to define the basis for sustainable management of these woodlands, firstly by developing techniques for measuring biomass and monitoring woody growth; secondly, by examining the effect of site conditions on productivity; and thirdly, by investigating biological and social aspects of the management of these woodlands. This research has found that good estimations of standing wood biomass of these two species can be derived from diameter and stem length measurements, thus providing woodland managers with a means of assessing the standing stock. The finding that B. spiciformis forms annual rings can be used in ageing the trees, projecting future yields more accurately, as well as monitoring the effects of management on growth. In the investigation of the effects of climatic and edaphic conditions on tree growth, soil depth was found to have the greatest influence, followed by mean annual rainfall and clay content. Dominant height was found to be the best morphological variable to estimate site potential, in the absence of detailed studies of soil characteristics. The experimental findings from silvicultural trials have important implications for management. Regrowth from coppice stools was vigorous even in dry years, and greatest from medium to large stools. Productivity in general was extremely variable, both of coppiced and uncoppiced trees, due to site effects. The most productive sites are also potentially the best for agriculture and are therefore unlikely to be left exclusively for woodland management. The silvicultural techniques of coppice reduction and water harvesting were not found to enhance coppice regrowth. Browsing by livestock was found to severely reduce coppice regrowth, particularly of J. globiflora, at least in the initial stages, so that protection from browsing in the first year or two after felling is recommended if maximum regrowth is desired. An assessment of the use and management of the indigenous wood resources in a resettlement area in central Zimbabwe suggests that the present harvesting of wood products is unsustainable, due largely to the lack of any woodland management policy for these areas. Local villagers feel powerless to exclude outsiders from their resource, and thus the incentives to manage it sustainably are low. Major changes in government legislation are necessary to alter this situation. In the interim, resource-sharing schemes are suggested as a method of improving the sustainability of use. Some of the results reported here have a direct application in miombo management; these are summarised at the end of this work in the form of guidelines for management. Others identify the need for further work to expand these initial findings. One of the outcomes of this research has been the reminder of how little is known of the appropriate management of this important vegetation type.

Abstract: RAPD markers and morphological characters were employed in order to study the variation observed in Pterodon emarginatus sensu Lewis (Fabaceae, Papilionoideae, Dipteryxeae). The objective was to verify if the dimorphism observed in this taxon could be interpreted as variation within a species or if it indicates that P. emarginatus sensu Lewis contains more than one taxonomical entity and in this case, what is the relationship of them and how would be the best way to denominate them. In a publication about the legume species of Bahia (Brazil), Lewis has considered both P. pubescens (Benth.) Benth. and P. polygalaeflorus (Benth.) Benth. as synonyms of P. emarginatus Vog.. Since then, these two species have been treated as synonyms of P. emarginatus in many botanical databanks. However, P.emarginatus as proposed by Lewis, is a dimorphic species presenting individuals with pink flowers, pubescent leaves, and retuse folioles apex as well as plants with purple (violet) flowers, glabrous leaves and strong emarginate folioles apex. There is no mixed population of the two morphs (pink and violet) of P.emarginatus sensu Lewis in the field. The results of the AMOVA for RAPD markers showed that 74% of the observed variance was due to the difference between morphs pink and violet. The canonical discriminant analysis for morphological data agrees with molecular data showing a good separation of the two morphs (r= 0,963 p<0,0001). Those analyses together with the phototypes for the three taxa under study indicate that P.polygalaeflorus is a synonym of P.emarginatus and P.pubescens should be maintained as a separate species

Abstract:
The study of the floral ontogeny is essential for the understanding the evolutionary processes involved in the development of the floral organs. The aim of this work was to analyse the floral ontogeny the species C. echinata, C. peltophoroides and C. ferrea, from the family Fabaceae/ Caesalpinioideae. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy techniques were used. The observed results indicated that the ontogeny events of the tree species were similar: the inflorescence apical meristem is indeterminate and initiates bracts in an acropetal order. Each bract protects a single floral meristem. The first floral organ formed is the abaxial sepal and it is followed by the lateral and adaxial sepal primordia in a unidirecional order. The whorls of petal and antepetalous and antesepalous stamen primordial are the next to begin. The carpel primordium arise as a mound in the center of the floral meristem. When the carpel primordium is about 100µm high, a cleft is formed in its adaxial side, on the site where the placenta will be formed. At anthesis, the stigma differentiates papilate cells. The results obtained with this descriptive work will serve as a foundation for future studies of the molecular aspects of reproductive development of legumes.

Abstract:
The title of this thesis Bottom Creek, Bent Mountain, VA is the subject of my large ink drawings. Starting with the spring outside my window, this book describes the creeks as it flows across the mountain that I grew up on. My drawings document the experience of walking along the banks of Bottom Creek as it flows past farms fields and along the roadside. Described as a seemingly insignificant place, the creek is in fact it is one of the most basic, and important parts of this mountain’s landscape, because the creek’s natural process it is responsible for producing the landscape as we see it. Through drawing the water from direct observation, I find a deeper connection to the land and respect for its ever changing processes.

This thesis presentes a study about the character Dona Benta as a Reading mediator in Dom Quixote das Crianças and in Geografia de Dona Benta. At the first one it seems to be there a reading project thought by Monteiro Lobato and executed by the character of the grandmother; at the second, she is responsible for mediating the knowledge through the resource of a trip. To execute this work it was necessary an investigation about how the action of the grandmother mediator happens in all Lobato’s books for children in order to distinguish her actions in these two texts and from this investigation it was concluded it happens in two ways: Dona Benta-grandmother-mediator “familiar” with reading, and Dona Benta grandmother-teacher-mediator who “institutionalizes” the knowledgement. At this work we also tried to understand how the ilustrations of her character, designed by a variety of ilustrators in many different editions, show an evolution in her moments of reading mediation. In addittion, we also tried to understand how it might have contributed to reinforce this aspect in young readers. Finally, it was still possible to discuss in this thesis how Dona Benta can be an efficient example of Reading mediator in new media and technologies even nowadays.

Abstract:
There is particular interest in the oil industry, in gas/liquid distribution in pipe line systems. The presence of bends has a significant effect on gas/liquid flows. Bends are often necessary to fit the equipment into limited spaces e.g. in plants or on oil rig platforms. As part of designing industrial systems, it is therefore important to be able to understand how liquid and gas move around bends. The aim of this research is to develop a method for predicting gas/liquid annular flows. A 3D CFD-based method is therefore developed to solve for annular flows in pipes and is applied to a range of pipe bends. In the presented study, the two-phases are gas and liquid. Multiphase fields can be handled as a continuum gas field, continuum liquid filed and as liquid droplets of varied diameters. The liquid travels along the walls as a film and in the gas core in the form of droplets. The presented approach accounts for the dynamics of the droplets flow in the gas core and their interaction between them. The liquid film is solved explicitly by means of a modified Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. The droplets are traced using a Lagrangian technique. The film to droplets (entrainment) and droplets to film (splashing, spread, bounce and stick) interactions are taken into account using sub- models to complement the VOF model. In free surface flows, a high velocity gradient at the gas/liquid interface results in high turbulence generation. In order to improve the momentum transfer between the phases at the interface, a correction to VOF is also implemented based on the work of Egorov [1]. A detailed comparison between the model and experimental data for vertical, Wolf et al. [2], and horizontal annular flows, Butterworth and Pulling [3], show reasonable agreement. The model is then applied to annular flow in bends, Maddock et al. [4], Anderson and Hills [5], Sakamoto et al. [6]. The comparison between the model and experimental data found in the literature show a good agreement. The model is also successfully applied to medium size (127mm) pipe configurations run at Nottingham University as part of a parent project. The model is finally applied to large pipe diameters encountered in industrial oil/gas applications to investigate scale issues and the model potential in industry.

Abstract:
The present investigation is concerned primarily with air-water flow in a horizontal 0.032 m ID tube, and the influence of a 90° horizontal bend on the flow characteristics. Visualisation studies using high speed still photography and cine film, and entrainment and drop size measurements were conducted before and after the bend. Entrained mass fluxes were determined from film flow measurements carried out using the film removal technique, while the drop size distributions were measured with a laser diffraction technique. During these measurements the pressure in the test section was held between 1.0-1.4 bar, and at ambient temperature. Prior to the horizontal flow study, drop size and film flow rates were measured for vertical air-water flow in a 0.01026 m ID tube. This extended the work of Jepson (1992) who reported the effect of gas density and surface tension on film flow rate, drop size and deposition mass transfer coefficient. Modifications to the equipment described by Jepson (1992) allowed an extension of the measurements to higher flow conditions. The visualisation study was taken across flow conditions that include stratified, annular and pseudo-slug flow regimes. Still photographs show the presence of air bubbles entrained in the liquid film, and the creation of liquid drops at the crest of roll waves. Drops were seen to be entrained from the liquid film by both bag break-up and ligament break-up mechanisms. At the bend, the phenomenon of film inversion was seen to occur. Also, a secondary flow existing in the gas phase at the bend can be responsible for a swirl movement observed in the liquid film, in which at the upper part of the tube the liquid was pulled from the outer wall of the bend to the top of the tube in an anti-clockwise, cork screwing fashion. In the lower half, the liquid film was drawn from the outer wall towards the bottom of the tube in a clockwise motion. From the cine films, information on drop velocity was also extracted. This showed the axial drop velocity to be constant over the time frame of analysis. No significant correlation was found between the drop size and the axial drop velocity. The entrainment results in the horizontal tube showed that for stratified/annular conditions the entrained liquid mass flux increases with liquid flow rate (for a fixed gas flow rate), and in some instances plateau conditions were reached. However, for the pseudo-slug regime the level of entrainment falls considerably. For the whole range of flow conditions studied, the entrained liquid mass flux increases with superficial gas velocity, except for GL = 10 kg/m 2 s where the amount of entrainment is constant. The reduction in entrained liquid mass flux after the bend above certain flow conditions, is caused by drops depositing on the outside wall of the bend. For the flow conditions under study, the Sauter mean diameter varies between 60-110 um. Gas velocity has a strong influence on drop size, ie, the higher the gas velocity the smaller the drop size. The effect of liquid flow rate is somewhat more complex. At the lower liquid flow rates, drop size seems to be controlled by the entrainment mechanisms, while at the higher liquid flows drop coalescence has a dominant effect. The influence of the 90° bend on the drop size distribution was to increase the diameter of the drops. Both the entrained liquid mass flux and drop size were found to be lower for horizontal annular flow than in vertical flow, for the same flow conditions and tube diameter. The measurements carried out for air-water flow in the vertical 0.01026 m ID tube, showed the entrained mass flux to increase with both gas and liquid flow rates. For the flow conditions analysed, the Sauter mean diameter varies between 26-45 um. Drop size was seen to be influenced by gas and liquid flow rates, following similar trends to those observed during the horizontal study.

Malaria is one of the most important endemic diseases in tropical regions whose treatment is based on substances discovered from plants traditionally used in folk medicine. Thus, faced with the resistance of the parasite (Plasmodium spp.), The search for new drugs has become fundamental. Among the bioactive substances of plant species, terpenoids have a range of biological activities, among which antimalarial. Therefore, the objective of this research was the isolation of substances with antimalarial potential. The species that are indicated as antimalarial and that was used in the present study is easily found and is also cultivated in the State of Amazonas in EMBRAPA and INPA: 'sacaca' (Croton cajucara Benth). Croton cashews and leaves of Benth (Euphorbiaceae) were submitted for the preparation of bioactive extracts, with relevance in the antimalarial activity. In the in vitro bioassay of the P. falciparum K1 strain, IC50 = 6.4 ± 1.2 μg / mL, followed by the ethanolic extract of the bark, with IC 50 = 17.2 ± 6.6. The extracts were investigated by means of a traditional phytochemical approach, based on the open column chromatographic fractionation, resulting in the isolation of seven substances. Natural substance 1 was acetylated in a reaction of acetic anhydride (Ac 2 O) and pyridine (C 5 H 5 N), resulting in compound 2. These eight compounds were identified primarily by 1 H and 13 C 1 D and 2 D and CL-EMAR NMR analyzes. The results showed that only three compounds had inhibition above 50% (1, 2 and 6), but the compound (1) and (2) 6) showed better activity by inhibiting more than 80% of in vitro growth of P. falciparum strain K1: 70.5-68.0 (1); 63.9-55.6 (2); 57.6-0 (3); 41.8-37.2 (4); 18.6-23.2 (5); 92.7-75.6 (6); 34.9-23.2 (7) and 37.2-11.6 (8). 1 and 6 had their IC50 calculated, where they presented moderate in vitro activity against P. falciparum strain, with IC 50 = 23.7 and 23.0 μg / mL, respectively. Compound 1 was the only one to be tested in vivo, however it did not show activity against P. berghei, orally and subcutaneously during the seven day treatment period.

In this work we aim at investigating whether epidemiological surveys on caries influence the municipalities relating to oral health planning and policies. For this purpose the methodology we used is a case study, adopting interviews, archival research and evaluative research considering the period from 1997 to 2010. I built an evaluation matrix based on Weiss model for the use of research results, with two dimensions - health policy and programming - and nine indicators. We conducted semi-structured interviews with coordinators of oral health for the mentioned period as well as documentary research in official material. Afterwards we made the triangulation of methods. The results suggested that six indicators were considered satisfactory from those, four presented evolution # Work Model, Occupational Health, specialties and Scheduling Offer; two remained the same : access to fluoride and prevention system. Three indicators were unsatisfactory - Initial consultation, Cover and attention model. There is evidence that the changes in the model of care led a backward movement in the indicators when searching for the wholeness and offer of non curative activities. The conclusion we draw is that the surveys influenced the municipality in the programming and policies of oral health. The recommendations resulting from the surveys, influenced measures taken by the municipality and reveal the ability of its management to improve the oral health care.

This dissertation presents a study made on São Bento Colony, from the period from its foundation in 1873, through middle of 1930's decade. The research was carried out mainly over parish sources. Located on North Santa Catarina, the present district of São Bento do Sul had been created in the XIX Century as an extension Colony of Dona Francisca headquarter. Whe the land measurement began in São Bento, there was already on the premises a few Brazilian families established with the property rights letter granted by the Government of Paraná. Beside them, São Bento had been occupied mostly by Teuto-Polonaise and bohemians, all Catholics. The cohabitation of these families came to be between three major groups: Indians (already as a minority group), Brazilians (called as "caboclos" - mixed blood), and Europeans recently arrived at the core. The Polonaise community was constituted by the opening of new lines, like the Rio Vermelho village and Rio Natal. Beside the parish's data and official records, the analysis came possible through interviews (Oral History) with descendants, as the proper use the materials available in private collections. Therefore, this becomes a relevant contribution in immigration studies in Santa Catarina, over the small bibliographic production envolving Polonaise groups and its descendants.

This work describes the phytochemical study of Licania rigida (Chrysobalanaceae), popularly known as oiticica. In this study we used the bark and wood of roots, woody stem, leaves and flowers. The extracts were subjected to liquid-liquid partition chromatography, conventional (adsorption and exclusion) and modern, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The chemical investigation of the root of L. rigida resulted in the isolation of compounds: squalene (LR-01), lupeol (LR-02), betulinic acid (LR-03), niruriflavone (LR-11) and the binary mixture of steroids, β-sitosterol and stigmasterol glycoside (LR-06). From stem was isolated the acid licanic (LR-09), while from leaves were isolated the following metabolites: α-tocopherol (LR-07), the binary mixture of α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol (LR-08), the mixture binary steroid β-sitosterol and stigmasterol (LR-05) and the flavonoids afzelin (LR- 12), myricetin-3-ramnoside (LR-15) and myricetin-3-glucoside (LR-16). From flowers were isolated the followed compounds: kaempferol (LR-10), tiliroside (LR-13), licanolin (LR-14) and the diterpene 1β,16α,17-trihydroxy-ent-kaurane (LR-04). This chemical investigation resulted in the isolation of novel substances for literature, the species and Licania genus. Structure determination of isolated compounds was obtained by analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of a hydrogen-1 and carbon-13 one and two dimensional, mass spectra obtained by electron impact (MS-IE) and electronSpray ionization (ESI-MS) and Infrared spectra (IR) and by comparison with literature data.

Abstract:
In this paper, binaural beats were used as stimuli to induce Gamma neural activity in the brains of 18 participants with the purpose to see if the effect enhanced memory and/or speech perception. Participants conducted a word-list recall task, followed by a speech-in-noise task under three conditions: before Gamma stimulus, after Gamma stimulus, and after a placebo stimulus. The results showed that the method works to boost Gamma neural activity, but that neither memory nor speech-perception was significantly affected by the stimulus. The conclusion is that binaural beats is unreliable as a method to enhance memory and speech-perception in humans.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper begins with the historical evolution of two important legal institutes, trust and ownership, since the Roman roots. However, in Brazilian law we analyze the concept of deed of trust and similar institutions, thus we will study the chattel mortgage agreement. Afterward, we will focus fiduciary ownership, its legal evolution in the Brazilian law, as well as, its divisions involving real and personal property, in which we set forth the concept, legal nature, its constitutive elements and the consequences arisen from its non-performance. We have not forgotten the procedural aspect and controversial issues as: bankruptcy, judicial recuperation and the acceptance or not of civil imprisonment, among others. During this work we tried to analyze both critically and comparatively, similar figures of the fiduciary ownership institute and establish the similarities and differences in each of the systems we studied, as well as individualize the institutes provided in the Civil Code of 2002 and in Act No. 9.514/97. Finally, our study would not be complete without researching trust in the French, Italian and Anglo-American systems.
