Abstract:
In the late 1960’s, E.A. Nordgren and J.V. Ryff studied composition operators on the Hardy space H2. They provided upper and lower bounds on the norms of general composition operators and gave the exact norm in the case where the symbol map is an inner function. Composition operators themselves, on various other spaces, have been studied by many authors since and much deep work has been done concerning them. Recently, however B.D. MacCluer and T. Kriete have developed the study of composition operators on very general weighted Bergman spaces of the unit disk in the complex plane. My starting point is this work. Composition operators serve well to link the two areas of analysis, operator theory and complex function theory. The products of this link lie deep in complex analysis and are diverse indeed. These include a thorough study of the Schr¨oeder functional equation and its solutions, see [16] and the references therein, in fact some of the well known conjectures can be linked to composition operators. Nordgren, [12], has shown that the Invariant Subspace Problem can be solved by classifying the minimal invariant subspaces of a certain composition operator on H2, and de Branges used composition operators to prove the Bieberbach conjecture. In this thesis, I use various methods from complex function theory to prove results concerning composition operators on weighted Bergman spaces of the unit disk, the main result is the confirmation of two conjectures of T. Kriete, which appeared in [7]. I also construct, in the final chapter, inner functions which map one arbitrary weighted Bergman space into another.

Oliver, Vendrell Roc. "Hankel operators on vector-valued Bergman spaces." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/471520.

Abstract:
The main goal of this work is to study vector-valued Bergman spaces and to obtain the weak factorization of these spaces. In order to do that we need to study small Hankel operators with operator-valued holomorphic symbols. We also study the big Hankel operator acting on vector-valued Bergman spaces. In Chapter 1 we collect all the previous results and notations needed to follow the rest of the manuscript. More concretely, some of the topics covered in this chapter are the Bochner integral, the integral for vector-valued functions appearing first in Bochner; the Bergman metric, results of the metric used in Bn; harmonic and subharmonic function; basic notions of differentiation, where the differential operators R(a, t) are presented which is important in the next chapters and in the final section we recall some topics on Banach spaces, as the Rademacher type and cotype of a Banach space and some other related results. Having all that in mind, in Chapter 2, the vector-valued Bergman spaces are presented. The vector-valued Bloch type spaces play a similar role and therefore we dedícate one full chapter to these spaces. Chapter 3 is devoted to present and characterize the vector-valued Bloch type spaces. Since we mention Hankel operators, in Chapter 4 we prove the characterization of the boundedness of the small Hankel operator with analytic operator-valued symbols between vector-valued Bergman spaces (of different type). We explain what this means in the following. Another very important consequence of the boundedness of the small Hankel operator between vector-valued Bergman spaces is shown in Chapter 5. We establish the weak factorization of the vector-valued Bergman spaces. Factorization of analytic functions is a very big topic and many people worked on it during many years and it is known to have many applications. Therefore, in Chapter 6 we fully characterize the boundedness of the big Hankel operator on vector-valued Bergman spaces in terms of its operator-valued holomorphic symbol for all cases of p > 1 and q > 1, and so we solve and generalize the previous problem. Finally, in Chapter 7 we discuss some open problems we have not been able to solve, as well as some other interesting problems in the same line as this work in order to look on the future.

Arroussi, Hicham. "Function and Operator Theory on Large Bergman spaces." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/395175.

Full text
Abstract:
The theory of Bergman spaces has been a central subject of study in complex analysis during the past decades. The book [7] by S. Bergman contains the first systematic treat-ment of the Hilbert space of square integrable analytic functions with respect to Lebesgue area measure on a domain. His approach was based on a reproducing kernel that became known as the Bergman kernel function. When attention was later directed to the spaces AP over the unit disk, it was natural to call them Bergman spaces. As counterparts of Hardy spaces, they presented analogous problems. However, although many problems in Hardy spaces were well understood by the 1970s, their counterparts for Bergman spaces were generally viewed as intractable, and only some isolated progress was done. The 1980s saw the emerging of operator theoretic studies related to Bergman spaces with important contributions by several authors. Their achievements on Bergman spaces with standard weights are presented in Zhu's book [77]. The main breakthroughs came in the 1990s, where in a flurry of important advances, problems previously considered intractable began to be solved. First came Hedenmalm's construction of canonical divisors [26], then Seip's description [59] of sampling and interpolating sequences on Bergman spaces, and later on, the study of Aleman, Richter and Sundberg [1] on the invariant subspaces of A2, among others. This attracted other workers to the field and inspired a period of intense research on Bergman spaces and related topics. Nowadays there are rich theories on Bergman spaces that can be found on the textbooks [27] and [22]. Meanwhile, also in the nineties, some isolated problems on Bergman spaces with ex-ponential type weights began to be studied. These spaces are large in the sense that they contain all the Bergman spaces with standard weights, and their study presented new dif-ficulties, as the techniques and ideas that led to success when working on the analogous problems for standard Bergman spaces, failed to work on that context. It is the main goal of this work to do a deep study of the function theoretic properties of such spaces, as well as of some operators acting on them. It turns out that large Bergman spaces are close in spirit to Fock spaces [79], and many times mixing classical techniques from both Bergman and Fock spaces in an appropriate way, can led to some success when studying large Bergman spaces.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of an introduction and five research papers on topics related to conformal mapping, the Loewner equation and its applications, and Bergman-type spaces of holomorphic functions. The first two papers are devoted to the study of integral means of derivatives of conformal mappings. In Paper I, we present improved upper estimates of the universal means spectrum of conformal mappingsof the unit disk. These estimates rely on inequalities  obtained by Hedenmalm and Shimorin using Bergman space techniques, and on computer calculations. Paper II is a survey of recent results on the universal means spectrum, with particular emphasis on Bergman spacetechniques.Paper III concerns Bergman-type spaces of holomorphic functions in subsets of $\textbf{C}^d$ and their reproducing kernel functions. By expanding the norm of a function in a Bergman space along the zero variety of a polynomial, we obtain a series expansion of reproducing kernel functions in terms of kernels associated with lower-dimensionalspaces of holomorphic functions. We show how this general approach can be used to explicitly compute kernel functions for certain weighted Bergman and Bargmann-Fock spaces defined in domains in $\textbf{C}^2$.The last two papers contribute to the theory of Loewner chains and theirapplications in the analysis of planar random growth model defined in terms of compositions of conformal maps.In Paper IV, we study Loewner chains generated by unimodular L\'evy processes. We first establish the existence of a capacity scaling limit for the associated growing hulls in terms of whole-plane Loewner chains driven by a time-reversed process. We then analyze the properties of Loewner chains associated with a class of two-parameter compound Poisson processes, and we describe the dependence of the geometric properties of the hulls on the parameters of the driving process. In Paper V, we consider a variation of the Hastings-Levitov growth model, with anisotropic growth. We again establish results concerning scaling limits, when the number of compositions increases and the basic conformal mappings tends to the identity. We show that the resulting limit sets can be associated with solutions to the Loewner equation. We also prove that, in the limit, the evolution of harmonic measure on the boundary is deterministic and is determined by the flow associated with an ordinary differential equation, and we give a description of the fluctuations around this deterministic limit flow.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation we are interested in studying two extremal problems in the Bergman space. The topics are divided into three chapters. In Chapter 2, we study Putnam’s inequality in the Bergman space setting. In [32], the authors showed that Putnam’s inequality for the norm of self-commutators can be improved by a factor of 1 for Toeplitz operators with analytic symbol φ acting on the Bergman space A2(Ω). This improved upper bound is sharp when φ(Ω) is a disk. We show that disks are the only domains for which the upper bound is attained. In Chapter 3, we consider the problem of finding the best approximation to z ̄ in the Bergman space A2(Ω). We show that this best approximation is the derivative of the solution to the Dirichlet problem on ∂Ω with data |z|2 and give examples of domains where the best approximation is a polynomial, or a rational function. Finally, in Chapter 4 we study Bergman analytic content, which measures the L2(Ω)-distance between z ̄ and the Bergman space A2(Ω). We compute the Bergman analytic content of simply connected quadrature domains with quadrature formula supported at one point, and we also determine the function f ∈ A2(Ω) that best approximates z ̄. We show that, for simply connected domains, the square of Bergman analytic content is equal to torsional rigidity from classical elasticity theory, while for multiply connected domains these two domain constants are not equivalent in general.

Abstract:
This thesis is divided into two parts, which deal with quite diverse subjects. The first part is, in turn, divided into two chapters. The first focuses on the development of new function spaces in $R^n$, called generalized Bergman spaces, and on their application to the Hardy space $H^1(R^n)$. The second is devoted to the theory of Bergman spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds which possess the doubling property and to its relationships with spaces of Hardy type. The latter are tailored to produce endpoint estimates for interesting operators, mainly related to the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The second part is devoted to the study of some interesting properties of the operator $A f = -1/2 \Delta f- x \cdot \nabla f \forall f \in C_c^\infty (R^n)$, which is essentially self-adjoint with respect to the measure $d \gamma_{-1}(x) = \pi^{n/2} \e^{|x|^2} d \lambda (x) \forall x \in R^n$, where $\lambda$ denotes the Lebesgue measure, and of the semigroup that $A$ generates.

Liang, Xiaoming. "A class of weighted Bergman spaces, reducing subspaces for multiple weighted shifts, and dilatable operators." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39164.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 contains the preliminaries. We give the background, notation and some results needed for this work, and we describe our main results of this thesis. In Chapter 2 we will introduce a class of weighted Bergman spaces. We then will discuss some properties about the multiplication operator, Mz , on them. We also characterize the dual spaces of these weighted Bergman spaces. In Chapter 3 we will characterize the reducing subspaces of multiple weighted shifts. The reducing subspaces of the Bergman and the Dirichlet shift of multiplicity N are portrayed from this characterization. In Chapter 4 we will introduce the class of super-isometrically dilatable operators and describe their elementary properties. We then will discuss an equivalent description of the invariant subspace lattice for the Bergman shift. We will also discuss the interpolating sequences on the bidisk. Finally, we will examine a special class of super-isometrically dilatable operators. One corollary of this work is that we will prove that the compression of the Bergman shift on two compliments of two invariant subspaces are unitarily equivalent if and only if the two invariant subspaces are equal.

First, we use the technique of premeasures, introduced and developed by Korenblum in the 1970-s and the 1980-s, to give a characterization of cyclic functions in the Korenblum type spaces. In particular, we give a positive answer to a conjecture by Deninger. Second, we use the so called resolvent transform method to study the cyclicity of the one point mass singular inner function in weighted Bergman type spaces, especially with weights depending on the distance to a subset of the unit circle

Abstract:
This work attemps to show that behind the critical identification of the relationship to the spatial relativity, Bergson offers a real thought of the relationship. He distinguishes betwen spatial relations and temporal relationships. Relations are between distinct terms while relationships predate their terms. Duration, life or intuition can then be interpreted as relational experiences. A confrontation with some thinkers of the relationship (Russell, Brunschvicg, James, Nietzsche, Simondon, Bachelard and Whitehead) can show the relevance of this bergsonian distinction, and its consequences in ontology, epistemology and practice

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to make an inquiry on the nature and the development of dualities in Bergson&rsquo
s philosophy. Since the nature of each duality differs from the others and the dualistic pattern inherent in Bergsonian philosophy is subject to change, we base our study on a chronological structure in order to comprehend better how this pattern changes. We claim that such an inquiry will yield relevant outcomes with regard to ontological and epistemological evolution of Bergson&rsquo
s thought. To state more precisely, we are of the idea that the modification in the dualistic pattern in Bergson&rsquo
s ontology is reflected in a parallel manner in his epistemology. The fundamental question that shows us the way to follow in our study is whether the elements of the dualities (whether they be ontological or epistemological) are reconciled by Bergson or they are left as absolutely distinct elements. At the end of the inquiry regarding that question, which we believe can be taken as an inspiring point in developing new approaches especially to epistemological problems, our conviction is that Bergson points out to a meeting point.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present effort, the philosopher Henri Bergson’s (1859-1941) seminal philosophical work functions as a revitalizing force and even an implicit point of departure for the more urban-oriented critique of Henri Lefebvre’s (1901-1991) watershed text L’Producción de l’espace/The Production of Space (1974). Both Lefebvre and Bergson in fact share a common perception of space—it is neither a static ground, nor an apriori condition of experience as Kant argued, but is instead a process inseparable from time and implicated in thought itself. Grounded in this resulting novel understanding of space, time and difference, I use an interdisciplinary approach to analyze Madrid’s cultural imaginary through novels by Belén Gopegui (1992), Pío Baroja (1911) and Luis Martín-Santos (1961); films by Carlos Saura (1996), Alejandro Amenábar (1997), and American Jim Jarmusch (1992); and the urban space of Madrid’s Retiro Park. The purpose of this work is twofold. On the one hand it is an attempt to reconcile the spatial issues of concern to cultural or human geography with an approach to social life grounded in the humanities. On the other it is a call for a deeper understanding of methodology taken in its widest sense. The former seeks not only to introduce spatial questions to the analysis of literature and film but also to articulate the intimate relation of cultural products to the urban processes in which they are formed, interpreted and sold. The latter requires an investigation of the philosophical preconceptions that structure our spatial practice and interpretation, as well as an awareness of the consequences these preconceptions hold—not only for understanding our common world, but also for producing it and finally for the possibility of changing it through action. These twin purposes—bringing geographical concerns into the humanities and assessing the philosophical bases of our spatial production and interpretation—are not so far removed. Through a careful reading of the above key literary, filmic and urban texts from twentieth century Madrid, this work explores the important consequences of conceiving of space as simultaneously mental and physical. In the Bergsonian fashion, these explorations seek to dispense with the stagnant and irreconcilable philosophical tropes of both pure materialism and pure idealism in order to yield a more precise understanding of cultural forms as living processes.

Abstract:
This dissertation deals with the relation between the concepts of time as it was thought by the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941) and by the German physician Albert Einstein (1879-1955). Both of them were contemporary and had the chance to face their unequaled opinions about nature of time. In his polemic assay Duration and Simultaneity (1922), Bergson exposed his theory about time, thought it as duration, already regarding Einsteins relativity theory. The objective here present is to make clear both authors concepts of time and relate them considering the critical points contained in the Bergsons assay about the relativity of Einstein. Thus, this work was divided in three parts: the first one treats with the duration theory of Bergson in his philosophical thought; the second one considers the relativity theory of Einstein taking as start point the historic evolution of the physician thought in his aspect with the analysis of the movement; and the third and last one struggles to take care of the conflict between both thesis as it appears in Duration and Simultaneity. The main conclusions extracts are: (1) Bergson made a mistake in his assay as he tries to transpose the consequences from his analysis about the especial relativity theory to the general relativity theory of Einstein; (2) this mistake doesnt undo the Bergsons thesis about the fundamentality of the duration in its relation with the physician time; (3) in his trial to indicate the essentiality of one pure time in its respect with a spatialized time, Bergson dashes with the limits of the conceptual language which himself had comprehend and denounced all along of his work; (4) and even so, remains the strength of the bergsonian thought about duration whose reach is so far of being considered by the science of his time as so far as it is by science today. As it was proposed by Bergson, those conclusions indicate the possibility to establish a complementary work between philosophy and science since it has a better comprehension of their respective works. Besides, in this cooperative work, is given an intuition to the possibility to see the reality of the universes extensive becoming to beyond of the space-time amalgam.

The aim of this paper is to highlight a particular notion in Bergson’s thought, namely the activity of the mind. Even though this inquiry does not intend to deal with the entire bergsonian corpus, as its subtitle indicates, highlighting the aforementioned notion, together with other structuring conceptual aspects, such as synthesis, continuity, indivisibility, might – as we hope – bring about different outlooks to the reading of Bergson’s works. These concepts are supposed to justify the inquiry inasmuch as they are supposed to demonstrate that the duration of consciousness, the very object of An Essay on the immediate data of consciousness, is a psychic, mind process, and an activity. A fourfold division was established, corresponding to each of the four chapters that compose this paper, in order to achieve our goal. The first three chapters are dedicated to analyzing each of the three chapters in the Essay, aiming at demonstrating in what way those notions happen to be fundamental in the development of that particular work, the means of their respective genesis and unfoldings. Thus, the opening inquiries into the intensity of psychological states focus on the distinction between the quality and the quantity of psychic data, by means of the concept of intensity. Next, the plurality of such data shall be examined by means of the distinction between the concepts of numerical multiplicity and non-numerical multiplicity. Finally, in the third chapter an analysis shall be undertaken of the organization of such data of consciousness, in order to conclude the description of the psychological subject in the previous chapters and, most importantly, in order to demonstrate that the duration of such subject is synthetic, active, indivisible, while at times producing free activity. The final considerations merely reiterate what has been divided throughout the previous chapters, besides giving a brief mention on the extension of the notion of activity in both of Bergson’s following works: Matter and memory and The Creative Evolution.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with two different subjects: balanced metrics on complex vector bundles and the diastatic exponential of a symmetric space. Correspondingly we have two main results. In the first one we prove that if a holomorphic vector bundle E over a compact Kähler manifold (M,ω) admits a ω-balanced metric then this metric is unique. In the second one, after defining the diastatic exponential of a real analytic Kähler manifold, we prove that for every point p of an Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type there exists a globally defined diastatic exponential centered in p which is a diffeomorphism and it is uniquely determined by its restriction to polydisks.

Abstract:
This PhD “Film by Practice” sets out to question and explore the nature of film poetry. The poetry of the cinematic image is described by the filmmaker Jean Epstein as the “unveiling of the magic inherent in the visual object beyond the capacity of words to define” (Epstein, cited in Sitney, 1978: xxiii). This is a daunting task that the study interprets through the moving image with particular reference to the magical temporal art of trance possession, which is processed within the genre of experimental ethnographic documentary and intercultural film. This thesis is an experiment in form, taking the filmmaker Maya Deren’s notion of film as comprising of “narrative horizontals” and “poetic verticals” (Deren and Sitney, 1971: 178) explored through a practical investigation of movement and time in space both beyond and within the film frame, studied through the art installations Divine Horsemen (2005) and People Inbetween (2007). It is focused through a reading of Gilles Deleuze’s Bergsonian philosophies of cinema as “movement-images” and “time-images” (Deleuze, 1989: xvi, xvii), exhibited as multi-screened video art installations that evolve within the space and hence exist in a perpetual state of “becoming”. Whether this is the sounds and images that change depending on where they are viewed, or the narrative theme of the works as “becoming other”. The themes of “in-betweenness” and the “mix” are investigated through these two video documentary artworks; first, by a third party restaging/remixing of the experimental ethnographic footage of Haitian Voodoo trance possession shot by Maya Deren, unfinished and posthumously released as Divine Horsemen the Voodoo Gods of Haiti (1985); and second, diaspora and the intercultural are explored through the first person personal. Intercultural documentary and experimental ethnography filtered through me with specific reference to my own triangular ethnicity, being British, Sri Lankan, though classified as Dutch Burgher, a “lost white tribe” (Orizio, 2000: 2): a journey into racial “becoming” as an “in-between” belonging to a diasporic community.

In the first part of my thesis, a result on the existence of a closed infinite-dimensional subspace, whose non-zero elements are universal series, is given in Banach and Fréchet spaces framework. The second part is devoted to the study of composition operators on spaces of several variables analytic functions. First, the spectrum and the dynamics of hyperbolic composition operators acting on Hardy spaces on the ball are completely described.Second, continuity and compactness of composition operators on Hardy-Orlicz and Bergman-Orlicz spaces on the ball are characterized. In particular, we deduce from the treatment of the continuity that there exists a class of Orlicz functions which define Hardy-Orlicz and Bergman-Orlicz spaces, on which every composition operator is bounded

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the spectral properties of the Toeplitz operators in relation to their associated symbol. In the first part, we give some classical results about Hardy space, model spaces and Bergman space. Afterwards, we expose some results about Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space. In particular, we discuss their spectrum and essential spectrum. Our work is inspired from two facts which have been proved on the Hardy space. First, considering a Toeplitz operator T, the norm, essential norm, spectral radius of T and the supremum of its symbol are equal. Secondly, on the Hardy space, spectrum, essential spectrum and essential range are strongly related. We answer the question of the equality between the norms, the spectral radius and the supremum of the symbol and between spectrum and essential range on the Bergman space. We look at these two properties on the Bergman space when the symbol is radial or quasihomogeneous. We answer these questions using the Berezin transform, the Mellin coefficients and the mean value of the symbol. The last part deals with the classical Szegö theorem which underline a link between the eigenvalues of a Toeplitz matrix sequence and its symbol. We give a result of the same type on Bergman space considering harmonic symbol wich have a continuous extension. We give a generalization, considering the sequence of the compressions of a Toeplitz operator on a sequence of model spaces

Abstract:
In Bergson’s school of thought the knowledge of the inside world is achieved through intuition, and in the Surrealism artistic movement it’s through the “voyage of imagination” that one achieves the discovery of the reality beyond this world. The former reaches the concept of “duration”, while the result of the latter’s poetic efforts is the dissolution of logic and the moving of the boundaries of time and space. In his philosophical musings, Bergson discovers the true form of the “duration” which is the curved line, a movement based on grace and the union of the three tenses. At the same time, the surrealist artists will reach through their poetic and artistic creation something that is very similar to Bergson’s philosophy. It is then that Julien Gracq’s analysis about surrealism being closer to Bergson than to Freud becomes meaningful to us.That being in consideration, the aim of this work will be to reveal the close proximity between the surrealist artists and Bergson, and doing so identify the place of the bergsonian “duration” and its spatio-temporal qualities, namely “continuity in time” and “simultaneity”, in surrealist art. This research, entitled “Esthetics of the curve in surrealist poetry” aims to bring the evidence of the presence of the concept of the curve and its formal and internal qualities like fluidity, graciousness and the serpentine and cyclic qualities, in the art and poetry of the surrealism

Abstract:
In an attempt to demonstrate Spain's obligation to recover its ignored historic memory, Almudena Grandes evokes the poetry of a man whose past itself has been manipulated, misused and partially forgotten: the great poet Antonio Machado. In this study I examine the use of the famous "two Spain" imagery from Machado's "Españolito" as a tool for subverting many erroneous concepts about the war that, according to Grandes, are still prevalent in Spanish society. I also examine how this "two Spain" conflict demonstrates the crossroads that faces the third generation of Spaniards after the Civil War: that of collectively remaining in silence or turning openly to the past. To capture this conflict Grandes uses images of water and ice as symbols of the fluidity (or lack of fluidity) of time, images similarly used by Machado throughout much of his poetry. As Ãlvaro, the protagonist, progressively discovers the past his father had so desperately tried to hide, his heart breaks free of the ice that had surrounded his life. His example demonstrates the actions that Grandes desires for a society that still suffers from the effects of the prevailing historic ignorance: that of turning to the past for a foundation on which to build. By evoking Machado´s name and exploring similar imageries, Grandes not only strengthens him as a defender of the Republic but suggests that the only way for Spain to become normal again is to turn to the Republic and its ideals and build upon what they started and what has been overlooked since the Civil War.

Jaikrishnan, J. "On The Structure of Proper Holomorphic Mappings." Thesis, 2014. http://etd.iisc.ernet.in/handle/2005/2695.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to give explicit descriptions of the set of proper holomorphic mappings between two complex manifolds with reasonable restrictions on the domain and target spaces. Without any restrictions, this problem is intractable even when posed for do-mains in . We give partial results for special classes of manifolds. We study, broadly, two types of structure results: Descriptive. The first result of this thesis is a structure theorem for finite proper holomorphic mappings between products of connected, hyperbolic open subsets of compact Riemann surfaces. A special case of our result follows from the techniques used in a classical result due to Remmert and Stein, adapted to the above setting. However, the presence of factors that have no boundary or boundaries that consist of a discrete set of points necessitates the use of techniques that are quite divergent from those used by Remmert and Stein. We make use of a finiteness theorem of Imayoshi to deal with these factors. Rigidity. A famous theorem of H. Alexander proves the non-existence of non-injective proper holomorphic self-maps of the unit ball in . ,n >1. Several extensions of this result for various classes of domains have been established since the appearance of Alexander’s result, and it is conjectured that the result is true for all bounded domains in . , n > 1, whose boundary is C2-smooth. This conjecture is still very far from being settled. Our first rigidity result establishes the non-existence of non-injective proper holomorphic self-maps of bounded, balanced pseudo convex domains of finite type (in the sense of D’Angelo) in ,n >1. This generalizes a result in 2, by Coupet, Pan and Sukhov, to higher dimensions. As in Coupet–Pan–Sukhov, the aforementioned domains need not have real-analytic boundaries. However, in higher dimensions, several aspects of their argument do not work. Instead, we exploit the circular symmetry and a recent result in complex dynamics by Opshtein. Our next rigidity result is for bounded symmetric domains. We prove that a proper holomorphic map between two non-planar bounded symmetric domains of the same dimension, one of them being irreducible, is a biholomorphism. Our methods allow us to give a single, all-encompassing argument that unifies the various special cases in which this result is known. Furthermore, our proof of this result does not rely on the fine structure (in the sense of Wolf et al.) of bounded symmetric domains. Thus, we are able to apply our techniques to more general classes of domains. We illustrate this by proving a rigidity result for certain convex balanced domains whose automorphism groups are assumed to only be non-compact. For bounded symmetric domains, our key tool is that of Jordan triple systems, which is used to describe the boundary geometry.

Abstract:
O último tópico abordado no trabalho diz respeito à unicidade do tempo.

This study provides an historical overview of the (gold-)mining industry in Tanzania between 1885 and 2019, divided into four periods (colonial occupation, 1885 -1961; the socialist period, 1961-1985; liberalization, 1985-2015), the neo-extractist turn, since 2015). The so far neglected history of mining in Tanganyika under German rule (until 1916) and the most recent developments under President Magufuli since 2015 receive special attention here. In this report we survey some recent developments of relationship between Hausdorff moment sequences and subnormality of an unilateral weighted shift operator. Although discrete convolution of two Haudorff moment sequences may not be a Hausdorff moment sequence, but Hausdorff convolution of two moment sequences is always a moment sequence. Observing from the Berg and Dur´an result that the multiplication operator on Is subnormal, we discuss further work on the subnormality of the multiplication operator on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space, whose kernel is a point-wise product of two diagonal positive kernels. The first one deals with the defect sequence for contractive tuples and maximal con-tractive tuples. These condone deals with the wandering subspaces of the Bergman space and the Dirichlet space over the polydisc. These are described in thefollowing two sections. Abstract:
This diploma thesis observes the topic of life in early Bergson. It is divided into three parts. The first chapter is concentrated on Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness. In this chapter we can become acquainted with the distinction between duration and space. This distinction is the basic of Bergson philosophy. We can also see the distinction between the deeper self and the surface self, which is based on the first distinction. The second chapter Matter and Memory shows how the foregoing distinctions are connected through the Bergson's theory of memory. In the last charter, named Creative Evolution, we deal with the metaphysic concept of life by Bergson, which has always been connected with duration and freedom

Abstract:
This practice-led research project investigates the relationship between autobiographical memory and photography. My research question comprises two parts. Firstly, how can I mediate the virtual space between myself, as both the maker and as the subject of my practice, to the viewer? Rather than communicating autobiographical specificity, how to emphasise the malleability of personal memories, using the photographic object as metaphor, so that a viewer may experience some shared nostalgia for the ‘lost’ past. Secondly, to what extent can the separation of self occur, from being ‘fixed’ in a snapshot and ‘semi-fixed’ in memory to being ‘present’ in the studio? I initiated this project from my preoccupation with self-defining memories of intimate relationships. I began with my ‘self’. These memories provided a means of confronting my research objective: using photography to manipulate them. This research reflects the need to address through photography the plasticity and transferability of memory’s hold on the present. To do this, I reworked personal snapshots and memories through material and sensory encounter. To help make way for a viewer’s bond to form with my work, I needed to dissolve and rework my bond with personal snapshots and memories. This was key to bridging the intangible space of my past. I produced several series of photographs, contextualised by Endel Tulving’s hypothesis of chronesthesia (mental time travel) and Henri Bergson’s theory of recollection recovery. Through conception and execution of reworked photographs, I occupied a distinctive space as a maker/subject. This space, which I have termed prepositional space, allowed me to ‘unfix’ self from snapshots and memories to be present in the studio. This makes way for a viewer’s bond to form. I argue that prepositional space is a significant new methodology for artists and viewers to assess their encounter with such photographs.

Taylor, C. J. "Collapsible Time: Contesting Reality, Narrative And History In South Australian Liminal Hinterlands." Phd thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/131791.

Abstract:
My practice-led project explores the indexical lamination of memory, history, narrative and reality afforded by photography imbued with the illusion of spatial dimensionality. This thesis investigates the notion that far from freezing a ‘slice of time’ photography reanimates perception through sensation rendering duration flexible and elastic. Using the liminal landscape of South Australia as time’s stage, I contend that time is ‘collapsible’, constantly unfolding and repeating. In embracing this temporal flow, I submit that photomedia becomes our most compelling connection to time itself, as lived experience. It is this connection that can act as an ethical agent of change for the betterment of the landscape in which we live. The project includes work created in South Australia, the ACT, the United States and the Outer Hebrides and Shetland Islands of Scotland. It includes artefacts photographed in the Adelaide Civic Collection, The South Australian Museum and the National Museum of Australia.
