Abstract:
In 1972, the black artist and writer Romare Bearden traveled from his home in New York to spend ten days in the capital of counterculture in Berkeley, California. He visited on an official commission from the city of Berkeley to create a new artwork for its City Council Chambers. The result was the monumental work Berkeley—The City and its People, which hung for decades until extensive seismic trouble plaguing City Hall forced its removal and relocation to a storage facility. Berkeley has changed dramatically since Bearden’s visit. The percentage of Berkeley’s black population has dropped from

According to numerous eyewitnesses, wood shingle roofs were a primary factor in the speed and scope of the Berkeley fire of 1923, which destroyed in three hours six hundred structures in a dense residential neighborhood adjacent to the campus of the University of California. The city council swiftly banned shingles for homeowners who were building anew, not only in the burn area but citywide, and limited the use of shingles in refurbishing existing roofs. This essay, part 2 of a two-part series, describes and analyzes the shingle industry’s refusal to accept these limits on their lucrative mar

Cities are shared spaces. As the massive worldwide Iraq war protests that began in 2002 indicate, the structure of the city allows for the presentation of social statements, where large groups can gather, share ideas or argue beliefs, and where media outlets can broadcast these activities. While cities enable these forms of interaction, digital technologies also allow for worldwide connections, both through communication and entertainment. Iain Sinclair is a writer who is synonymous with a city. Sinclair’s wandering, materialised as walking, is central to the claim of intimacy with the city that underpins his authority as a London writer.
