Full textThe phenomenon of poverty is one of the most serious problems of big cities. The focus of this doctoral thesis is an examination of poverty in two major cities, which must be understood on a broader basis while considering social inequality, rising unemployment, deterioration of working and living conditions, income disparities, etc. These increasing characteristics are notable in cities of developed countries such as Berlin. The growing spread of poverty in industrialized societies and in emerging countries has led to a broader discussion about the phenomenon of poverty at the international level. This doctoral thesis analyzes the phenomenon of poverty in two major cities. Mexico City and Berlin are two different cities with similar social problems. Mexico City is a ,typicalʼ city in a emerging country, which is structurally as well as functionally different from cities of developed countries by the degree of social inequality and the pronounced gap between rich and poor. On the other hand, after its reunification Berlin faces problems of other large cities. In recent years the following phenomena have occurred: the emergence of new forms of poverty, a growing number of welfare recipients, an increasing migrant population without economic prospects etc. This study summarizes investigative findings and reports on poverty in Mexico City and Berlin together. The goal is not to collect new empirical data, but rather to emphasize the selection, presentation and analysis of various studies on poverty in both cities. The analysis focuses on poverty from the standpoint of common aspects, differing characteristics and the respective development trends in the two researched cities.

Full textThe era at the peak of industrialization fundamentally altered the appearance of cities in Europe and North America. A high level of natural population growth and extensive migration movements from rural to urban areas coupled with an intensive architectural expansion to the inside and outside characterized the events. The increasing number of employment opportunities in the industrial and tertiary sectors profoundly interfered with the people’s traditional working and living environments. These changes particularly affected Berlin as the capital city of the German Empire and as one of the most important commercial centers. The Wedding, a city district of Berlin located along the former northern city limit, is at the core of this dissertation. This district stood out through its especially dynamic development. The large undeveloped areas that still existed at the time were transformed into built-up areas within a few years’ time. Large-scale enterprises in the electronic and chemical industries settled down in the Wedding district and took an increasing influence on the local job market. On the basis of an evaluation of church records (from the local Wedding parishes) that altogether contain information on 95,623 people, this study of the time period from 1885 to 1914 demonstrates the existence of significant socio-economic and urban developmental contrasts recognizable even within a narrowly defined city area (such as the Wedding district). These contrasts are all too easily concealed by the numbers of official statistical data, yet their consequences continue to produce an after-effect, even in the presence. An unemployment rate of well above 20 percent, widespread unoccupied commercial infrastructure, and a significantly above-average concentration of foreign population groups is among numerous currently recognizable problem clusters that already originated in the time of the German Empire.

Full textThe goal of this research is the analysis of perceptions about the American model of modernity in the period between 1918 and 1938. The debate about America in Germany serves as the template for its examination in the context of the first Czechoslovak Republic, which will present an entirely new perspective. The main contribution of this thesis is the removal of the one-sided approach to German perceptions of America by means of comparison and perspective from Czechoslovakia. In the ‘20s and ‘30s played in particular the feuilleton a crucial role in creating popular perceptions of society. As a modern urban genre it enabled both the depiction and the formation of contemporary discourse. The subject of this thesis is a study of modernization, a complex phenomenon that has touched upon all aspects of everyday life. The analysis of selected topics – the USA, the city, and the woman – shows how people responded to this process. Due to the fact that modernization became equated with Americanization, a discourse about the latter is central to this analysis. Both in the German Weimar Republic as well as in Czechoslovakia America was used as a backdrop for projecting; both the visions and challenges that occurred while dealing with modernization. The center of modernism was the urban environment. This fact has led the focus of this examination to the cities of Prague and Berlin, with the reference point for both being New York. This thesis analyzes the way these cities presented themselves from the point of view of urbanization – in the case of Berlin it also includes perception of the city by outsiders. In the ‘20s social change was predominantly manifest in the empowerment of women and it was also women who profited most from modernization of the social sphere. The evolution of the notion of femininity is thus reflected in important aspects of this confrontation with modernization / Americanization.

Full textHow do artists’ place-making practices shape urban space? How is it possible that art spaces with no commercial gallery structure survive in the competitive urban arena? What concepts, strategies and forms do they take? How are these urban contestations situated with regards to the ubiquitous creativity imperative or the new mobilities paradigm? And what do the spatial consequences of these place-making processes reveal about the urban spaces of possibility? The comparative urbanism critiques are operationalized to address these questions. Rather than categorically dividing Beijing from Berlin as comparative sites, a broad ontology of the urban as a relational space is established to think about the art spaces in connection to one another. Employing a narrow definition of art spaces, the qualitative fieldwork is comprised of interviews, on-site observation and interpretive clustering around themes. The empirical results are organized around conceptual motivations, place-making strategies and spatio-temporal consequences. Theorizing back, the myth of the urban frontier as a legitimation of conquest through the figure of the pioneer is reconsidered through narratives of exploration and circulation; the urban frontier as progressive possibility is displaced with empirically-sourced ideas of nomadic cruise ship space and phoretic relationships. These concepts offer an alternative to understanding mobility between places, through its illustration of mobility as constituted by a particular kind of place. Considering art spaces as spaces of possibility challenge perceptions of inevitability, but also evoke risks, such as the isolationist gesture. Finally, a reflection on the heuristic presentism of studying mobility is coupled with a call for more longitudinal methodologies in order to achieve a better balance for a comparative approach that overcomes presumed categories of difference without ignoring historically constituted structures of power.
