Les études nabokoviennes témoignent de la tendance à laisser de côté la possibilité de l’influence de la culture allemande sur l’œuvre de Nabokov. Ce principe est surtout né des propos mêmes de l’écrivain qui insista à maintes reprises sur le fait que, bien qu’il vécût en Allemagne, il ne savait pas parler allemand et évitait tout contact avec l’univers allemand. Il est vrai que l’émigration russe à Berlin représentait un État dans l’État. Cependant, les frontières entre les mondes russe et allemand n’étaient pas si étanches. Nabokov passa quinze ans à Berlin et ses livres furent traduits et publiés en allemand par une maison d’édition allemande. Des projets d’adaptation à l’écran de ses œuvres se présentèrent plusieurs fois, en particulier pour le roman Roi, dame, valet. Parmi ses œuvres composées à Berlin se trouvent au moins deux romans, Roi, dame, valet et Chambre obscure ainsi qu’une série de nouvelles décrivant l’univers allemand. Tout cela contribue à supposer que le principe établi au sujet de l’ignorance de l’influence allemande sur son œuvre n’est pas si incontestable. Notre travail a pour objectif de lire l’œuvre de Nabokov dans le contexte de l’art allemand contemporain, notamment de l’esthétique expressionniste dont nous étudions trois thèmes majeurs : la déformation du psychisme humain conduisant au dédoublement de soi, l’ambivalence de l’image féminine et la représentation de la grande ville. Un examen approfondi permet de découvrir des liens avec le cinéma muet et la peinture. Le présent travail vise à introduire un nouveau niveau de lecture des œuvres de Nabokov et à reconstruire le contexte culturel berlinois dans lequel ces dernières furent créées<br>The Nabokov studies have tended to ignore the possible influence of the German culture on Nabokov’s works. This position springs from the writer’s often quoted words, which stress that, although he lived in Germany, he could not speak German and avoided any intercourse with the German world. Russian emigration certainly constituted a state within the state but the borders between the Russian and German worlds were not so impenetrable. Nabokov spent fifteen years in Berlin and his books were translated and published in German by a German publishing house. There were several projects for screen adaptations of his works, in particular for the novel King, Queen, Knave. While in Berlin, he wrote at least two novels, King, Queen, Knave and Kamera Obskura (Laughter in the Dark for the revisited version by Nabokov), and a series of short stories which describe the German world. All this undermines the principle established about the ignorance of German influence.Our thesis aims at reading Nabokov’s works in the context of the German contemporary art, in particular Expressionist aesthetics. We consider three major issues, namely the distortion of the psyche, which leads to an inner division of the self, the ambivalence of the female figure and the representation of the big city. Thus an extensive analysis allows us to reveal links with German silent cinema and with painting which had eluded researchers so far. The present work aims at introducing a new dimension in the reading of Nabokov’s works and at restoring them to the cultural context of Berlin in which they were created

La thèse porte sur le work in progress de Raoul Hausmann, "Hylé", dont la genèse exceptionnelle s'étend sur plus de 30 ans (1926-58). "Hylé I" (inédit) et "Hylé II" (2006) traitent des années 1926-33 (Allemagne) et 1933-36 (Ibiza) de la vie de Hausmann. Ces ensembles textuels, qui résultent tous deux du montage d'une centaine d'unités textuelles, transcendent les appartenances génériques au profit d'une identité transgénérique, plurielle et mobile. Au regard du rôle majeur de Hausmann dans le mouvement Dada à Berlin, tant sur le plan théorique que par sa production plastique et poétique, le présent travail pose la question de la continuation d'un projet d'avant-garde dans "Hylé". L'exploration des relations intermédiales entre Hylé et le photomontage, la poésie visuelle et la photographie – formes d'expression investies par Hausmann pendant ou après Dada – permet d'éclairer la permanence de son projet utopique d'une augmentation de la perception sensorielle humaine. L'analyse comparée de "Hylé I" et "Hylé II" s'appuie sur la reconstruction de la genèse du texte à partir des deux grands fonds d'archives français et allemand. Elle montre d'abord, au niveau macrostructurel, que le montage crée un mode de cohérence spatial et dynamique qui concurrence celui de la linéarité narrative, soutenu en cela dans "Hylé II" par une véritable poétique de l'espace. Elle fait ensuite ressortir l'ambivalence d'une entreprise autobiographique qui se forme au cours de la genèse et oscille entre la constitution rétrospective du moi et sa dissolution (ou sa fragmentation). Enfin, elle s'attache à l'expérimentation langagière conçue comme le projet utopique de mettre en mouvement les limites rigides imposées à notre connaissance par le langage, projet qui culmine dans l'écriture multilingue de l'exil dans "Hylé II"<br>This thesis discusses Raoul Hausmann's work in progress, Hyle, whose genesis lasted over 30 years (1926-1958). "Hyle I" (unpublished) and "Hyle II" (2006) both have strong autobiographical character and deal with the years 1926-33 (Germany) and 1933-36 (Ibiza). Each consists of approximately a hundred units combined together into a textual ensemble, which goes beyond traditional genre classifications and produce a transgeneric, plural and mobile textual identity. Taking into account Hausmann's crucial importance in Berlin Dada both on the theoretical field and for his artistic and poetical production, this thesis looks into the question of the continuation of an avant-garde project within "Hyle". In order to understand what remains of Hausmann's utopian project of an enlargement of human perception, it is most helpful to explore the intermedial relations between the work in progress and Hausmann's practice of photomontage, visual poetry and photography. The comparative analysis of "Hyle I" and "Hyle II" is based on an extensive genetic enquiry using the two principal Hausmann archives in Germany and France. It first focusses on the macrostructural level and highlights how the technique of textual montage creates a spatial and dynamic coherence mode, which is conflicting with that of narrative linearity – this being supported in "Hyle II" by a comprehensive poetics of space. The analysis then sheds some light on the ambiguity of an autobiographical project which forms itself in the course of the genesis and oscillates between retrospective subject constitution and subject fragmentation or dissolution. It finally analyses the language experiment in Hyle as a utopian attempt to shift the verbal bondaries which limit our understanding – culminating in "Hyle II" with the multilingual writing influenced by the exile years<br>Die Dissertation untersucht Raoul Hausmanns Work-in-progress "Hyle" unter Berücksichtigung seiner mehr als 30 Jahre umfassenden Textgenese (1926-1958). "Hyle I" (unveröffentlicht) und "Hyle II" (2006) handeln von Hausmanns Leben in den Jahren 1926-33 (Deutschland) und 1933-36 (Ibiza). Diese jeweils aus ca. 100 zusammenmontierten Einheiten bestehenden Textensembles gehen über traditionelle Gattungszugehörigkeit hinaus zugunsten einer transgenerischen, pluralen und beweglichen Identität. Ausgehend von Hausmanns wesentlicher Rolle in Dada-Berlin – im theoretischen wie im künstlerischen und poetischen Bereich – wird in dieser Arbeit der Frage nach der Fortschreibung eines Avantgarde-Projekts in "Hyle" nachgegangen. Das vielfach intermediale Verhältnis des Schreibprojekts zu den Ausdrucksformen der Fotomontage, der visuellen Poesie und der Fotografie wird herausgearbeitet und in Beziehung zu Hausmanns utopischem Projekt einer Erweiterung der menschlichen Wahrnehmung gesetzt. Die vergleichende Analyse von "Hyle I" und "II" erfolgt anhand einer fundierten, sich auf den beiden Haupt-Nachlässen in Deutschland und Frankreich stützenden Rekonstruktion der Textgenese. Sie zeigt zuerst auf makrostruktureller Ebene, wie die Text-Montage einen räumlich-dynamischen, im Spannungsfeld mit einem linear-narrativen stehenden Kohärenzmodus stiftet, und wie sich dies zudem in "Hyle II" in einer umfassende Raumpoetik artikuliert. Die Analyse hebt dann das Ambivalente eines autobiographischen Unternehmens hervor, das sich erst im Laufe der Genese entwickelt und zwischen retrospektiver Ich-Konstitution und Subjekt-Auflösung bzw. -Fragmentierung oszilliert. Sie befasst sich schließlich mit dem Sprachexperiment als einem utopischen Projekt, das den starren, unsere Erkenntnis beschränkenden Grenzen der Sprache erneut Beweglichkeit zu verleihen sucht – und im mehrsprachigen, durch Exil-Erfahrung geprägten Schreiben in "Hyle II" seinen Höhepunkt erreicht

"The essence of architecture is the power of adaptation to fresh facts.” Berthold LubetkinThis creative project was my way of exploring if a convergence of art and technology in architecture can exist today.This exploration involved two focus points: one was movement and the other was glass technology.Movement was used for the exploration of the spatial relationships within an interpretation of our society today: the movement on the site as well as the inner motion of the single building elements.Glass was my modern technology tool for translating artistic ideas within architecture. It acts as a mediator between inside and outside space, between art and technology and creates a connection to the ‘understanding’ of our society.This paper is presented in five parts. The first part is the introduction to my thesis and the theoretical research about art and technology. Second is the process which I used for this project. The project is the third part. The fourth part is about glass, which represents my way of exploring the convergence of art and technology within architecture today. Creative Alternatives examines the intersections between cultural politics, experimental art, and the public sphere in late twentieth century Berlin. The work identifies how artists used interactive visual displays to engage with West Berlin publics, develop democratic subjectivities under state socialism in East Berlin, and reject the city’s neoliberal turn after German unification. The work also traces the role of the arts as an economic motor in late twentieth century Berlin, as city leaders responded to the pressures of globalization and interurban competition. This study of divided and unified Berlin transcends the political ruptures and geographical divisions that structure our understanding of modern Germany and hinder integrated histories of the two German states, even as it addresses issues common to major cities worldwide.

S'il est désormais acquis que les communautés d'artistes et plus généralement le système de l'art contemporain jouent un rôle majeur dans le changement urbain, il reste encore plusieurs aspects à éclaircir en ce qui concerne la spécificité de cette contribution. Dans le contexte des quartiers en voie de régénération en particulier, les artistes ont un impact sur le capital symbolique qui se transmet des communautés qui y habitent ou y travaillent, à l'espace ; un processus que l'on pourrait qualifier de « spatialisation du capital symbolique ». Ces hypothèses ont été développées à travers l'exploration d'un ensemble d'éléments artistiques ayant agi dans le processus de régénération urbaine, au sein du cadre spécifique du Berlin des années 1990.Afin de donner des réponses nouvelles à ces questions, il a fallu élargir le champ de l'analyse en associant aux dimensions sociologiques, géographiques, économiques et urbaines la considération des activités artistiques qui appartiennent à la sphère plus proprement esthétique. L'hypothèse étant que les œuvres d'art – qui ne sont pas nécessairement des objets – sont des « configurations signifiantes à partir desquelles il est possible d'exercer un jugement rationnel » parce que dans l'expérience esthétique qu'elles engendrent, se produisent des effets d'ordre « normatif, cognitif et pragmatique ». Le rôle crucial de l'espace urbain dans l'évolution de l'art depuis la fin du XIXe siècle étaye l'hypothèse d'un ensemble d'interactions spécifiques, sur le plan esthétique, entre expression artistique et espace urbain. On ne se réfère pas aux recherches artistiques qui trouvent dans la ville un sujet à représenter, mais à des expériences plus radicales qui ont pu choisir l'urbain comme espace d'intervention, substrat des œuvres et lieu où établir des relations plus directes avec le public et le monde réel. La compréhension de l'émergence d'une approche site-specific dans l'art du XXe siècle peut servir à comprendre les racines symboliques du rôle croissant du système artistique dans le changement urbain. Pour aborder une question intrinsèquement transdisciplinaire nous avons dû avoir recours à des instruments variés et hétérogènes. Ainsi cette recherche s'appuie sur une variété de sources : des fonds d'archives concernant les programmes publics et les initiatives institutionnelles ; des recherches anthropologiques visant à reconstruire des histoires de vie et des expériences racontées par leurs protagonistes ; des sources bibliographiques importantes sur le cadre historique et théorique. Le degré d'indépendance des acteurs artistiques dans la détermination de ces changements démontre une profonde ambivalence qu'on ne peut réduire à des formules synthétiques. Les résultats des actions artistiques peuvent être analysés soit comme une exploitation de la valeur symbolique produite par les acteurs institutionnels de la ville, soit au contraire comme la préservation et le développement d'une alternative urbaine et politique. Par rapport aux exemples observés à Berlin, nous avons essayé de retracer les liens qui unissent ces expériences à des phénomènes antérieurs similaires – et à d'autres encore en évolution dans le présent – cela nous a permis de les considérer ceux-ci comme l'expression d'une tradition constamment renouvelée. En ce sens, les acteurs artistiques dont nous nous sommes occupés peuvent être considérés comme les interprètes de besoins et de désirs latents du corps social et urbain qui reviendraient de façon cyclique et qui pourraient jouer un rôle dans le développement de la ville dans le future aussi. L'analyse approfondie des deux cas d'étude, au-delà de leur intérêt individuel, s'offre comme une exploration à l'intérieur d'un champ dans lequel les études sont encore limitées et souvent très circonscrites. Notre recherche se veut comme la tentative de formuler des concepts, des instruments et des stratégies d'analyse qui pourront par la suite être appliqués à d'autres contextes<br>The key role played in urban change by artist communities, and more generally the art system has been widely recognized, yet the specific characteristics of this contribution are still to be explored. In the context of regenerating neighborhoods in particular, artist communities are able to produce a symbolic value that is subsequently transferred to the space they inhabit and work into, in a process that we could define as a ‘spatialisation of symbolic value'. Our thesis is focused on a series of artistic elements and events that were able to interact with the urban regeneration process that took place in post-wall Berlin in the 1990s.To fully understand such process, it is necessary to broaden the scope of the analysis in order to associate to sociological, geographical, economic and urban aspects the consideration of those artistic activities that belong to the aesthetic sphere. Our hypothesis being that works of art – which are not necessarily objects – may be regarded as significant configurations whose consideration allows a rational judgment as the aesthetic experience they determine encompasses prescriptive, cognitive and pragmatic effects. The crucial role of urban space in the evolution of art since the end of the XIX century supports the hypothesis of the existence of specific interactions between artistic expressions and the urban environment. We are not referring to those art works that find in the city an object to represent, but to more radical researches that choose the urban dimension as a site of intervention, the foundation of the work of art and the place where a more direct relationship with the public and the real world may be established. The consideration of the ‘site-specific' approach that appeared in the art of the XX century has helped us to understand the symbolic nature of the role increasingly played by the art system in urban change. In order to deal with a question that pertains to urban and cultural geography, urbanism, history as well as art history, we had to rely on a set of heterogeneous tools and sources: archival material concerning public programs and institutional initiatives; anthropological enquiries concerned with ‘life histories' and experiences reconstructed through the direct testimony of their protagonists; extensive bibliographic sources used to analyze the broader context of more specific case studies. As a result of our analysis, the degree of independence of artistic actors in the determination of such changes is marked by deep ambiguity that cannot be reduced to synthetic formulas. At times the symbolic value produced may be subsequently commodified and exploited by the institutional players of the city, in other cases art interventions prove as the expression of an alternative vision for urban development and its politics. In the specific context of Post-wall Berlin, we have tried to explore the relationship that connects specific experiences of the time to similar ones occurring in the past – as well as others currently taking place. This effort has brought us to consider the events of the 1990s as the expression of needs and desires periodically reappearing at the surface of the urban and social body, forces that may still play an important role in the future development of the city. Besides its intrinsic interest, in depth analysis of two case studies appears as a further inquiry in a field where research is still lacking and often focused on specific perspectives. Our contribution is intended as an attempt to develop concepts, tools and analytical strategies that may in the future be applied to other contexts

Berlin peut être appréciée en termes d'attraction spectaculaire. Mais cette ville, de par son histoire, peut également se comprendre comme un anti paysage appelant détournements, relectures et reconstructions. Ville de symboles, Berlin construit un vocabulaire graphique particulier. Les signes furent d'abord mis en concurrence dans des situations de confrontation entre plusieurs univers et temporalités. Matière de l'oubli et parfois de l'indicible, les murs renferment les expériences traumatisantes et l'émiettement du corps berlinois semble exposer l' Accident. Autochtone dans ce système, l' expression graffiti réussit à s'y couler. De nouvelles dynamiques plastiques se nourrissent de la mise en commun des matériaux berlinois, entre réalité et artifice, entre porosité historique et perfection formelle. Les nouvelles compréhensions plastiques et graphiques peuvent des lors se déberliniser et accéder à une autonomie nouvelle. Berlin devient une ville ouverte à d'autres possibilités de tramage. La distinction entre une promenade réelle dans les matières et les signes de la ville et sa relecture plastique et esthétique a posteriori n'est alors plus primordiale. L'une et l’autre des attitudes deviennent dorénavant pertinentes.

Dès 1770, Shakespeare est érigé en modèle par les artistes partisans d’une rupture avec l’esthétique classique, jusqu’à devenir une figure tutélaire des romantismes européens, en littérature comme en musique. Hector Berlioz, fondateur du romantisme musical français, est un cas emblématique de ce geste romantique qui consiste à s’emparer d’une figure littéraire pour bousculer les catégories esthétiques existantes et renouveler les formes musicales. Le dramaturge anglais est une référence constante dans son œuvre, depuis sa découverte de Shakespeare en 1827 jusqu’à son dernier opéra, Béatrice et Bénédict en 1862, adapté de la comédie Much ado about nothing. Berlioz s’inspire de Shakespeare tant dans ses œuvres musicales que dans ses écrits critiques et autobiographiques, où les références à l’auteur anglais sont multiples. La relation que l’œuvre de Berlioz entretient avec celle du dramaturge pose à la fois des questions de réception et de transferts culturels, et le problème du passage d’un système sémiotique à un autre. Elle invite tout d’abord à s’interroger sur le processus d’appropriation d’une œuvre littéraire par un compositeur et ses enjeux théoriques, et à situer sa démarche dans le cadre plus vaste de la réception européenne de Shakespeare au tournant du xixe siècle. His name is so high that he becomes a figurehead for the various forms of European romanticisms, in literature as well as in music. As the founder of the French musical romanticism, Hector Berlioz embodies the romantic approach which consists in seizing a literary figure to discard the existing aesthetical categories and thus bring about new musical forms. Right from 1827, the year the musician discovers Shakespeare, until his last opera in 1862, Béatrice et Bénédict, adapted from the comedy Much ado about nothing, Berlioz widely draws his inspiration from the English playwright and constantly refers to him in his musical, critical and even autobiographical works. The issues raised by this close relationship are threefold : the way Shakespeare’s plays were received, the problem of cultural transfer and the shift from one semiotics to another. First of all it brings forth questions about the process which leads a composer to make a literary works his own and the theoretical aspects at stake. Also, this relationship makes it necessary to see how Berlioz’s approach fits in with the way Europe received Shakespeare at the turn of the 19th century, in so far as the reference to the playwright takes place at a time when a new aesthetics of the sublime is in progress, as shows our study of the relationship between text and music. It so appears that the “Shakespearean system” enriches the composer’s reflexions on musical forms and genres

Friedrich Hollaender (1896-1976) was one of the most prolific composers of cabaret song literature in Berlin between 1918 and 1933. Beginning with his work at the literary-political cabarets of the early 1920s, including Max Reinhardt’s Schall und Rauch, Trude Hesterburg’s Wilde Bühne, and Rosa Valetti’s Café Größenwahn and continuing through the cabaret revues presented at Hollaender’s own Tingel-Tangel-Theater in the early 1930s, Hollaender wrote over 200 cabaret songs. A classically trained composer who studied with Engelbert Humperdinck, Hollaender ultimately found his niche in creating cabaret songs that clearly evoked the mood and environment expressed in the texts he set. In this way, Hollaender elevated and expanded the expressive power of music in the cabaret. At the same time, Hollaender did not revolutionize the cabaret song. Instead, he worked within the traditional framework of the cabaret song, adapting his compositional style to fit the expectations of the genre. Cabaret songs privilege the clear expression and declamation of the text. Thus, most cabaret songs exhibit a simple musical framework. Performers often spoke or intoned the text rather than singing the melody, and as a result, cabaret songs often double the melodic line in the accompaniment so that it can be heard and recognized during the performance. This practice differs markedly from art song, in which the melody and accompaniment serve as equal partners in expressing the text as a unified musical work and the singer is expected to sing the melody provided by the composer. Much of Hollaender’s work in the cabaret involved an effort to infuse the cabaret song with the expressive musical force of the art song without altering the traditional performance practice, the freedom to intone the text typical of the cabaret, and the simplified harmony and formal structure of cabaret songs. Hollaender’s ability to immediately capture the essence of the song texts in music is what ultimately made him successful. He also demonstrated an ability to adapt to the swiftly evolving tastes and expectations of cabaret audiences during the tumultuous Weimar Era. His adherence to a philosophy of music for the cabaret that would “explode in a lightning flash” and create a mood that would be “present in the first beats,“ along with his flexibility in responding to the evolving taste of the public allowed Hollaender to enjoy a sustained, successful career in the cabaret. His enormous output of cabaret songs is a testament to his effectiveness and success as a composer, writer, and producer in Berlin cabaret theatres. The purpose of the study is to understand how Hollaender’s work elevated the expressive force of the musical settings for cabaret songs through the analysis of the text and the music of his cabaret songs. This study explores representative examples of Hollaender’s cabaret songs composed for Berlin theaters between 1919-1933. The songs were primarily selected to demonstrate the wide variety of musical expression Hollaender was able to achieve in his song settings within the confines of traditional cabaret song forms, particularly the couplet and the role chanson. A wide variety of subject matter is covered in these cabaret song settings, from political and social satire to adapted folktales, and from playful character pieces to defiant antimilitarist statements and poignant illustrations of poverty and hardship. In addition, the cabaret songs included in the study emerge from significant collaborative relationships the composer developed, most notably his early collaborations in literary-political cabaret theaters with satirist and poet Kurt Tucholsky, Dada author Walter Mehring, and performer and first wife Blandine Ebinger. Finally, songs were chosen from throughout the time Hollaender composed music for the cabaret in order to demonstrate the changing landscape of the cabaret as time progressed. As a result, a significant number of songs in the study emerge from Hollaender’s late cabaret revues, programs of songs, skits and other acts loosely organized around a theme or idea, for which the composer wrote both the text and the music. Because the cabaret by its nature offered commentary on contemporary society, the study includes examples that demonstrate the evolving political and social climate in Germany as expressed in the cabaret song texts. For instance, Hollaender’s cabaret songs written in collaboration with Kurt Tucholsky in 1919-1920 frequently criticize Gustav Noske and the use of paramilitary Freikorps to quell dissent in the fledgling Weimar Republic. By the time of Hollaender’s 1931 cabaret revue Spuk in der Villa Stern, however, Hollaender’s political satire criticizes and lampoons National Socialist rhetoric and caricatures Adolf Hitler. Finally, the songs included in the discussion were also chosen in part due to the availability of musical scores, texts, and recordings. Whenever possible, recordings of the original performers, including Blandine Ebinger, Paul Graetz, and Claire Waldoff were consulted in order to understand performance practices used in Berlin cabarets during the Weimar era. Recordings of modern performers, chiefly Ute Lemper, Tim Fischer, and Jody Karen Applebaum were also explored. Many of the original performers were actors rather than singers, and their style of interpreting their songs with a mixture of spoken declamation and singing demonstrates the importance of clearly expressing the text and its emotional content and creating a complete characterization in the presentation of the song. This style of performing did not diminish Hollaender’s contribution as a composer, but rather created a multilayered hybrid of speech, melody, harmony and rhythm that set for many the standard for excellence in the Weimar era cabaret song. Literal English translations of the songs presented for the study were developed in order to facilitate the discussion of how Hollaender’s music specifically evokes the mood and expression of the text. In addition, the study includes explanations and annotations of the events, historical figures, and cultural icons that are peppered throughout these texts. Because cabaret songs are by their nature a product of the contemporary society out of which they emerge, a basic understanding of the time period is essential to fully comprehend these works. Hollaender’s cabaret songs often employ a Berlin dialect, use colloquial expressions, and assume an understanding of contemporary society in the 1920s that is no longer common knowledge nearly a century later. As a result, the detailed study and translation of the texts were essential to understanding Hollaender’s cabaret song settings. This investigation demonstrates how Hollaender evoked a variety of specific moods and ideas in his cabaret song settings through an economy of musical means. Although his music adhered to the conventions and traditions of the cabaret song by employing simple harmonic structures and an almost exclusive use of verse-refrain song form, the composer effectively used dissonance, rhythmic motives, chromaticism, mode-mixture, melodic shape, and other compositional techniques to great expressive effect that clearly reflected the wide variety of environments and moods described in his texts. The result is that the text and music are wedded in Hollaender’s cabaret song settings in such a way that they become a unified expressive art form.

Alfred Döblin’s famous 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz has often been discussed in terms of the appropriation of film poetics by the medium of literature and is said to abound with examples of literary montage. In most post-war discussions of literary montage in Berlin Alexanderplatz, however, the device is regularly understood as an umbrella term for anything of stylistic interest. Deploying 1920s and 1930s literary and film criticism I demonstrate that this regularly leads to anachronisms and terminological over-inflation. I thus offer a historically informed definition of literary montage in precise narratological, stylistic and experiential categories. Montage rests on the identification of intradiegetically unmotivated ready-mades and the perceived experiential similarities between the novel, Soviet montage films, and Dadaist photomontage. The lack of motivation affords the experience of disruption which, I demonstrate, has within the Benjaminian “modernity thesis” too often been extrapolated to characterize all film editing. My analysis shows that contemporary critics regularly discriminated between different types of editing on at least three experiential axes – tempo and dynamism, confusion, and disruption. My proposed definition of literary montage thus also allows me to analyse the novel in terms of the key narratological novelties that literary montage introduces: the global proliferation of heterodiegetic zero-level narrators accompanied with the local elimination of zerolevel narrators altogether. In other words, Döblin accomplishes in literary fiction what holds for film fiction in general – the absence of a narrator held to be fictionally in control of the whole of the text. Conversely, through the use of intertitles and the particular type of voice-over interjections, Fassbinder’s adaptation endeavours to emulate the reciprocal commonplace of literary fiction – the narrator’s continuous presence. Paired with Fassbinder’s film, Jutzi’s adaptation demonstrates how visual and sound film montage both differ from literary montage. Whereas literary montage hinges on disruptive stylistic shifts, film montage rests on disruptive spatio-temporal dislocation.

George Grosz's paintings and drawings of Berlin during the Weimar period demonstrate a complex matrix of tensions between nature and the urban experience. In his work, mechanization, sexuality, gender and animality are recurring themes that cue the viewer to the profound anxiety that modernity had unleashed a chaotic force into the city. Using an ecofeminist analysis, I show how the disorder of the city was imagined as a primordial human condition in which a previously disavowed connection to nature was suddenly foregrounded. Though Grosz's renditions of Berlin scenes are ironic, they also revel in the demise of social order. In this thesis, I argue that Grosz's art deploys the conceptual force of unmastered nature as a critical tool, at the same time showing how nature was integrated into the cultural fabric of urban life.

This exploratory qualitative study describes the criteria that African American Literature professors use in defining what is African American Literature. Maulana Karenga’s black arts framework shaped the debates in the literature review and the interview protocol; furthermore, the presence or absence of the framework’s characteristics were discussed in the data analysis. The population sampled was African American Literature professors in the United States who have no less than five years experience. The primary source of data collection was in-depth interviewing. Data analysis involved open coding and axial coding. General conclusions include: (1) The core of the African American Literature definition is the black writer representing the black experience but the canon is expanding and becoming more inclusive. (2) While African American Literature is often a tool for empowerment, a wide scope is used in defining methods of empowerment. (3) Black writers should balance aesthetic and political concerns in a text.

Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) est l’un des artistes français les plus présents à Berlin à l’aube de la Première guerre mondiale. Avec l’aide de Herwarth Walden (1878-1941), directeur de la revue et galerie Der Sturm, l’artiste acquiert rapidement une solide réputation dans la capitale allemande, où il expose une quarantaine de toiles au cours de la seule année 1913, tandis qu’il diffuse abondamment ses propres textes théoriques et ceux de ses amis Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) et Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961). Le peintre français suscite bientôt l’engouement de certains artistes berlinois, nombreux à l’avoir rencontré lors de ses deux voyages en Allemagne avant la guerre. Pour une large partie de la recherche, ce succès s’expliquerait par un « malentendu productif » : les artistes de la capitale allemande auraient détourné l’œuvre de Delaunay dans un sens germanique, appréciant sa peinture pour des raisons étrangères à ses intentions initiales. Contestant cette hypothèse – variante de celle, pluriséculaire, de l’incompatibilité par nature des goûts allemands et français – nous proposons d’envisager la réception berlinoise de Delaunay dans une perspective micro-historique, en nous intéressant au regard porté sur lui par trois artistes : Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966), Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) et Bruno Taut (1880-1936). Après avoir mis en exergue les discours possiblement « entendus » par ceux-ci autour de l’œuvre du peintre français en Allemagne, nous nous intéressons à la trajectoire individuelle de chacun d’entre eux, mettant en évidence la profondeur des liens qui unissent finalement les avant-gardes désignées sous les termes d’orphisme et d’expressionnisme<br>Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) is among the French artists that are the most involved in Berlin at the dawn of the World War I. Thanks to Herwarth Walden (1878-1941), who is the director of the magazine and the gallery Der Sturm, the artist quickly earns a solid reputation in the German capital city where he exhibits around forty paintings in 1913 alone, while widely circulating his own theoretical texts as well as those of his friends Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) and Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961). The French painter soon spurs the interest of some Berlin artists, many of whom have met him during his two trips to Germany before the war. For an extensive part of the research, this success could be explained by a “working misunderstanding”: the artists of the German capital city supposedly twisted Delaunay’s work in a Germanic sense, appreciating his painting for reasons that were not related to his initial intents. We contest this hypothesis – which is a variant of the centuries-old hypothesis that states a natural incompatibility between German and French tastes – we suggest to consider the Berlin welcome of Delaunay in a micro-historical perspective by focusing on three artist’s point of view about him: Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966), Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) and Bruno Taut (1880-1936). After underlining the speeches they possibly “heard” surrounding the French painter’s work in Germany, we focus on each artist’s individual path, showcasing the depths of the links that join actually the avant-gardes that are coined under the terms of orphism and expressionism

This study examines personalism in John Donne's art: to what extent his poems are a product of his personality over and above conscious invention and artifice. It argues that Donne writes the way he does because, for the most part, he fails to attain distance from his work. The subjects that he writes about regularly are straight from his own life, and his take on them is highly personal. This paper brings in some biographical details but in general is concerned with scrutinizing Donne's writings in order to understand his imagination. Its primary method is to trace the repetition, resonance, and echoes of words, ideas, and themes throughout Donne's opus. Donne uses the same word or phrase repeatedly throughout his writings to dissect a single idea, so this essay discusses letters and sermons at the same time as love poetry and divine poetry. All are the product of a single imagination, and no genre necessarily precludes personalism. The first chapter looks at Donne's approach to art. Because he rarely writes explicitly about art itself, his approach must be reconstructed from his work. An inter-chapter follows, examining the effect of apostasy on Donne's work. Cette thèse, ancrée à la croisée de la sociologie de l'art et du travail, se propose de faire une sociologie des collectifs d'individualités au travail à partir d'une enquête comparée qualitative de collectifs d'artistes plasticiens à Paris et à Berlin de formes diverses (atelier autogéré, espace-projet, artiste-collectif). Dans une première partie, après une histoire originale des formes de collectifs d'artistes pour l'art moderne et contemporain, la comparaison Paris-Berlin met en évidence, malgré une différence massive de volume au profit de Berlin, des situations de marginalité partagée. Dans une deuxième partie, consacrée à la cohésion des collectifs d'individualités, les espaces de recrutement des futurs membres sont identifiés et les finalités des collectifs cernées : plus qu'artistiques ou politiques, elles sont professionnelles. Trois facteurs de cohésion sont dégagés : la personnification du collectif, le type d'auctorialité artistique et la situation de parité artistique entre les membres. Selon le degré et la nature cohésive du collectif, celui-ci oscille ainsi entre une subordination ou une émancipation des individualités en son sein. Dans une troisième partie, consacrée à la construction des parcours professionnels des membres, l'approche par les capacités de Sen permet de revenir sur ce choix improbable des artistes solitaires de s'engager en collectif. Quatre ethos d'artiste-en-collectifs sont révélés par l'analyse, selon le désintéressement artistique et collectif vécu. L'approche multiscalaire du social mise en œuvre ici permet d'identifier des parcours professionnels typiques attachés à ces ethos, se déployant au sein ou en dehors du champ de l'art<br>At the cross-road between Art and Work sociology, this thesis intends to do a sociological study of a collective of individualities at work, using a qualitative compared investigation on different ! types of visual artist collectives in Paris and Berlin (studios community, artist-run-space, artist group). The first section includes a historical description of artists collectives for the modern and contemporary art history, and discusses the comparison Paris-Berlin: this shows a shared ; situation of precarity, despite a great difference in terms of volume in favour of Berlin. The I second part is devoted to the cohesion of such collectives of individualities. Recruitment fields of the future members are identified and the finalities of the collectives are grasped: more than artistic or political, they are professional. Three factors of cohesion are distinguished: the personnification of the collective, the type of artistic authorship and the situation of artistic parity among the members. According to the cohesive nature of the collective, it swings between a subordination or an emancipation of the individualities in its centre. The third part is devoted to ; the construction of the members' professional paths. The capability approach by Sen allows to ; revisit this unlikely choice of solo artists to engage themselves in a collective. Four ethos of artist-| in-collective are highlighted by the analysis according to the degree of artistic and collective selflessness of the members. This multi-scalar approach of the social conducts to identify typical professional paths stick to these ethos, which unfold themselves within or without the artistic field

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to examine the complex pattern of the relationship between politics and art in the People’s Republic of China between 1949 and 1986, analysing the three most important aspects of this relationship , namely organisational structures, the ideological framework and political movements. The principal issue addressed in this research is that of how the Communist Party's policies on culture and art have affected the development of art theory and the creative work of artists in China. The thesis consists of four chapters representing the major historical stages of the People's Republic of China. Each chapter focuses on the different manifestations of the relationship between politics and art in aparticular social phase. Chapter one deals with the early formation of the organisational structures , the ideological framework and political campaigns in the arena of Chinese culture and art between 1949 and 1956. Chapter two examines the further development and the vacillating nature of the relationship between the state and artists during the years 1957 to 1966. Chapter three looks at the stormy years of the Cultural Revolution during which the political discourse and artistic work were merged. The fourth Chapter discusses the new trends of Chinese art by describing the newly emerging "self" (individual subjectivity) and the search for modernity in the period of 1978 to 1986. The general methodology employed in my thesis is composed of three dimensions - social, historical and comparative. The analysis of the social conditions and the general account of the historical process are closely combined with individual case studies. A comparative perspective is also adopted in order to reveal the extent of foreign influence. The central argument submitted in the thesis is that art in the People's Republic of China should be seen as an image of social reality. The argument is pursued by a method which seeks to relate art to social-political settings, and to explore not only the aesthetic dimension of artistic work, but also the political discourse embodied in it.
