Abstract:
In the middle of the sixteenth century, Bernardo Segni (Florence, 1504 – Florence, 1588) published some Italian translations with commentaries on some works of Aristotle. He was not a scholar nor did he have a university affiliation nor could he boast a deep knowledge of Greek language, but he worked in the cultural climate of Duke of the Florentine Republic Cosimo I (Florence, 1519 – Florence, 1574) and of the Florentine Academy, whose aim was to raise the cultural centrality of Florence and its dialect. In this paper I analyze some passages of his translation and commentary on Aristotle’s Ethica Nicomachea (Florence 1550; reprint Venice 1551). Through this examination some characteristics of the author’s work emerge, such as his didactic purposes, which may be related to the type of his audience, his (poor) knowledge of classical authors and sources, and his tendency towards continuous dialogue with the present.

Abstract:
During Erasmus’ English residence 1509–1514, Henry viii invaded France, as part of the “Holy League,” and, in the English king’s absence, England was attacked by Scotland. The events engendered a great quantity of poetry, as well as other writing: analyzed herein particularly are the verse contributions of Erasmus himself, his amicus Andrea Ammonio, Pietro Carmeliano, Camillo Paleotti, and Bernard André (the poems of these last two being edited and translated in appendices). This poetry in its context of events, both literary and political, influenced the anti-war writings that Erasmus was conceiving at the time, though he only published them later.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines Martin Luther’s interpretation of Saint Mary Magdalene throughout his career, from his Psalms lectures of 1513 to his sermons on John’s Gospel in 1529. In particular, it will be argued that Luther both adopted and reshaped the exegetical tradition flowing from the twelfth-century theologian, Bernard of Clairvaux. The final result was a Reformation reading of the Magdalene that was neither fully medieval nor “Protestant” as the tradition would later develop. Luther’s journey with the saint thus illumines his ambiguous place in the history of biblical interpretation, as well as his fraught relationship to the medieval past.

Abstract:
In Scotland as elsewhere, Protestant reform began as a clerical revolt within the Established Church. Without exception, the earliest leaders of reform in Scotland were disenchanted ecclesiastics, men whose backgrounds were essentially academic and clerical, men who possessed sufficient technical training and expertise to appreciate, before the sloganizing began, the significance (if not all the implications) of Luther’s academic revolt in 1517, and the relevance of his challenging ideas on salvation and his attack on the ‘treasury of merit’: not even the saints, he believed, had sufficient merit to save themselves. Luther, after all, was an Augustinian friar, priest, university teacher (as, for that matter, were Wyclif and Hus), and doctor of theology before his break with Rome. His thinking merited scrutiny, appraisal, and debate, even if only for refutation; and if nothing else, scholastic methodology had fostered theological speculation and critical discussion within an accepted framework of debate. Besides, Erasmus’s initial reaction to Luther’sNinety-Five Theseswas conciliatory: he considered Luther’s beliefs would be approved by all men, apart from a few points on purgatory; and he was later to observe, in 1519, that Luther’s detractors were intent on ‘condemning passages in the writings of Luther which are deemed orthodox when they occur in the writings of Augustine and Bernard’.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis proposes a new and up-to-date reading of the artistic, figurative and written works of Bernard Palissy, a French potter who lived between 1510 and 1590. The first chapter takes on the current knowledge about Palissy’s life and work and the status of historiography about this artist. A methodological analysis will be achieved by studying a meaningful sample of his craftsmanship, as well as reflecting upon three of his written works. Then it examines the context in which the religious reform influenced Palissy’s work, as well as the epistemological reform constituted by the establishment of craftsmen as owners of a practical knowledge culminated in essays written in vernacular languages, of which the publications of our author are an example. The third chapter focuses on the notion of “rustic” that Palissy uses to describe his works, the rustiques figulines, starting from the architectural lexicon we try to locate the palissian lair in the artistic horizon where the taste for rustic was spreading on a Europe-wide scale. The fourth chapter is devoted to the description of Palissy’s garden, while trying to study in depth the nature of the publication itself, its possible sources and proposing new comparisons with other gardens of the time, raising the question of its religious dimension. Finally, we concentrates on the pottery and the link between science, religion and art that is created in the works of Palissy, and propose an interpretation of this objects as artefacts destined to the wunderkammern by virtue of a recurrent iconography, its specific techniques of realisation and symbolical meanings

Abstract:

Abstract:
The high-lead glazes transparent or opalescent made by Bernard Palissy during the Renaissance still constitute technically inimitable works, so their chemical and thermal processes remain enigmatic. This project involves the study of glass compositions of the ternary SiO2-Al2O3-PbO to which Bernard Palissy added various coloring agents or opacifiers. After a fine multi-scale analysis of superficial glazes of archaeological samples (composition, thermomechanical properties, the interface glazes / ceramic substrate), we will try to reproduce them as accurately as possible in the laboratory by playing on raw materials, heat treatment conditions and ceramic support. The impact of the concentration of certain oxides such as Al2O3 on the glass structure (multi-spectroscopic approach), their microstructure (nature, distribution of crystals), their physical characteristics (viscosity, coefficient of expansion, color ...) and interaction with the substrate will be particularly studied. The approach combines in-depth analysis of an archaeological corpus and the reproduction of chemical systems and thermal processes. It will enable us to know the relevant indicators linked to the innovative processes and raw materials that allowed Palissy to obtain composites combining mechanical perfection (absence of cracking, remarkable interfacial cohesion) with that of realistic illusion. Finally, they will enable us to define criteria for the authentication of his works

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bernal Diaz de Castillo was a young soldier serving under Hernán Cortés on that memorable day in November 1519 when a small detachment of conquistadors gazed down at the city of Tenochtitlán, the spectacular capital of the Aztec civilization. Diaz wrote these words when he was in his seventies, the experiences of the Spanish conquest etched in his memory so clearly that it was as if they had happened a week before. The conquistadors gaped in amazement at a native American metropolis larger than Seville, then Spain’s most populous city, and certainly better planned than many chaotically organized European capitals. Diaz relished his memories, but then added an almost melancholy footnote: “Today all that I then saw is overthrown and destroyed . . . nothing is left standing.” Nothing is left standing. Diaz wrote the literal truth. Today, the architectural, cultural, and material legacy of the Aztecs lies buried under the urban sprawl of Mexico City. Cortés himself hastened the disappearance, ordering the construction of an imposing Catholic cathedral atop the central precincts of Tenochtitlán, where temples to the sun and rain god reeked with the blood of human sacrifice. The conquistadors wandered through an enormous market attended by more than 20,000 people a day. There one could buy gold and tropical feathers, jade and chocolate, every valuable and commodity possible, at the heart of a sprawling city of singlestory houses, terraced pyramids, canals, and well-defined ethnic neighborhoods. More than 200,000 people lived in Tenochtitlán in 1519. Two years later, the city was a smoking ruin. Within a century, the native population of the former Aztec domains was less than a fifth of what it had been a century earlier. Measles, smallpox, and other infectious diseases decimated the people. The population of the Basin of Mexico declined from an estimated 1.5 million to about 325,000 between 1519 and 1570. By that point, it was almost as if Aztec civilization had never existed. Those who had survived had been forcibly converted to Catholicism—the old beliefs, customs, and oral traditions destroyed by church decree.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Writing 131 years after Pius IV had granted the Spanish Inquisition exclusive jurisdiction over solicitation, the anonymous author of an admonition to a recently convicted curate declared that older works of canon law failed to mention penalties for solicitation because “lawmakers could not even imagine the existence of such depraved clerics and confessors.” Of course, solicitation was hardly new when Pius issued his bull of April 14, 1561. In fact, the Toledo tribunal of the Spanish Inquisition had tried a solicitation case as early as 1530. What was new was the perception on the part of Church authorities that solicitation posed a serious threat to the entire Tridentine program of revitalizing sacramentalism and expanding the authority of priests and confessors. As early as 1543, Calahorra’s reforming bishop, Juan Bernal de Luco, who was a leading member of the Spanish delegation to the Council of Trent, suggested that illicit relations between confessor and penitent should be severely punished if they became known publicly because of the danger that the sacrament itself would lose credibility. It was another prominent Spanish delegate to Trent, Pedro Guerrero, archbishop of Granada, whose 1559 memorial to Paul IV first raised the alarm about the frequency of solicitation and led directly to the bull of 1561.

It seems that both the guide of Warren Springs, U.K. and the VDI-Guideline might be a useful base to describe commonly accepted sampling procedures aiming at a standardization of sampling which might be a first step for a harmonization of olfactometric measurements in the different laboratories and countri es. Abstract:
