Abstract:
Yakushin, Sergei B., Theodore Raphan, Jun-Ichi Suzuki, Yasuko Arai, and Bernard Cohen. Dynamics and kinematics of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex in monkey: effects of canal plugging. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 3077–3099, 1998. Horizontal and roll components of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) were elicited by sinusoidal rotation at frequencies from 0.2 Hz (60°/s) to 4.0 Hz (≈6°/s) in cynomolgus monkeys. Animals had both lateral canals plugged (VC, vertical canals intact), both lateral canals and one pair of the vertical canals plugged (RALP, right anterior and left posterior canals intact; LARP, left anterior and right posterior canal intact), or all six semicircular canal plugged (NC, no canals). In normal animals, horizontal and roll eye velocity was in phase with head velocity and peak horizontal and roll gains were ≈0.8 and 0.6 in upright and 90° pitch, respectively. NC animals had small aVOR gains at 0.2 Hz, and the temporal phases were shifted ≈90° toward acceleration. As the frequency increased to 4 Hz, aVOR temporal gains and phases tended to normalize. Findings were similar for the LARP, RALP, and VC animals when they were rotated in the planes of the plugged canals. That is, they tended to normalize at higher frequencies. A model was developed incorporating the geometric organization of the canals and first order canal-endolymph dynamics. Canal plugging was modeled as an alteration in the low frequency 3-db roll-off and corresponding dominant time constant. The shift in the low-frequency 3-dB roll-off was seen in the temporal responses as a phase lead of the aVOR toward acceleration at higher frequencies. The phase shifted toward stimulus velocity as the frequency increased toward 4.0 Hz. By incorporating a dynamic model of the canals into the three-dimensional canal system, the spatial responses were predicted at all frequencies. Animals were also stimulated with steps of velocity in planes parallel to the plugged lateral canals. This induced a response with a short time constant and low peak velocity in each monkey. Gains were normalized for step rotation with respect to time constant as (steady state eye velocity)/(stimulus acceleration × time constant). Using this procedure, the gains were the same in canal plugged as in normal animals and corresponded to gains obtained in the frequency analysis. The study suggests that canal plugging does not block the afferent response to rotation, it merely shifts the dynamic response to higher frequencies.

Abstract:
“Once the guardian of the nation’s capital markets, known as an efficient regulator with a highly respected enforcement program, the [SEC] is now the subject of much criticism and is mired in scandal.” Ralph Nader, a critic of government regulation in all its forms, once rated the SEC as the best agency in Washington, head and shoulders above any competitor. Today, those in the securities industry seem to exhibit little fear of the agency and enforcement actions by it. Major scandals (Bernard Madoff, R. Allen Stanford, WestView Capital) go undetected (at least by the SEC) for years or decades, finally unraveling with billions of dollars in investor losses, leaving the SEC only to sweep up and turn out the lights.3 It seems each year, one or more major securities-related scandals has unfolded, undeterred in its formative stages by the prospect of SEC action; at full flower, these scandals may be policed and detected by state attorneys general, state securities commissions, or private plaintiffs, but almost never by the SEC.

Ouellet, Hubert. "En harmonie : les oeuvres architecturales résidentielles par le mouvement Arts & Crafts réalisées à flanc de coteaux par Bernard Maybeck, à Berkeley en Californie (1892-1904)." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/25429.

Abstract:
Using residential architecture constructed by Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957) in the hillside of Berkeley (United States of America, California) during the period comprised between 1892 and 1904, this thesis shows how was articulated a unique architectural language inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and more specifically the English author, theorician and critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). Under Maybeck's guidance, the architectural ensemble that he affectionately called his « gothic houses » became an important tool helping the establishment of a new way of life centered around architecture and nature. Berkeley's hillsides and landscape influenced considerably the artistic research, as the houses had to reflect their surroundings. Understanding this architectural development as an interpretation of the landscape and of the nature of Gothic as defined by Ruskin, Maybeck shows the necessity to go back to a « simpler » life where man and nature are in harmony.

"Flash back to April 1988 at the 60th Academy Awards. British producer Jeremy Thomas, then in his late 30s, presides over an astonishing night for Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor. The lm won nine Oscars including Best Picture, which Thomas himself received. A quarter of a century later, the London-based Thomas is as internationally minded as ever. One of the paradoxes about his career is that, as he has grown older, he has moved yet further away from the British lmmaking establishment rather than toward it. A compelling argument can be made that he is the most signicant British producer since Michael Balcon— the former Ealing boss—but whereas Balcon famously made lms “projecting Britain and the British character,” Thomas is a born subversive. You’d never nd him making Passport to Pimlico (1949) or one of the Doctor lms that his father Ralph Thomas directed with such success in the 1950s. His territory is more J.G. Ballard and William Burroughs. He is drawn to working with the most visionary and perverse auteurs, such as Nicolas Roeg, David Cronenberg, Takashi Miike, Julien Temple, and of course, Bertolucci. Born in 1949, Thomas is, by his own admission, a product of the 1960s. His personality and modus operandi are very different from those of younger British producers who emerged in the Thatcher era. He grew up around movies and has a reverence for lm as an art that these successors, busy churning out rom-coms, conspicuously lack. When the Rank Organisation described Roeg’s movie Bad Timing (1980) as “a sick lm made by sick people for sick people,” he saw it as a badge of honor. Thomas is a formidable businessman and has an intimate understanding of international sales. His contacts in Europe and Asia are unrivalled. Hollywood gives him its grudging respect, not just because of the Oscars, but because he is one of the few producers today whose credit, “Jeremy Thomas presents” regularly appears at the front of his lms. Thomas has now been active as a producer for 40 years and remains as prolic as ever. His numerous credits include The Shout (1978), Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983), The Hit (1984), Naked Lunch (1991), and Sexy Beast (2000)." In FilmCraft: Producing. Routledge, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9780240823881-66.
