An 18-year-old healthy woman was found to have cross-reacting material (CRM)-positive factor XII (F XII) deficiency, F XII clotting activity was less than 0.01 U/mL, whereas F XII antigen was 0.11 U/mL. An F XII inhibitor was excluded. To partially characterize the molecular defect of the abnormal F XII, immunologic and functional studies were performed on the proposita's plasma. The abnormal F XII was a single chain molecule with the same molecular weight (80 Kd) and the same isoelectric points (pl, 5.9 to 6.8) as normal F XII. Dextran sulfate activation of the proposita's plasma showed no proteolytic cleavage of F XII even after 120 minutes, whereas F XII in pooled normal plasma, diluted 1:10 with CRM-negative F XII-deficient plasma, was completely cleaved after 40 minutes. Adsorption to kaolin was identical for both abnormal and normal F XII. In the presence of dextran sulfate and exogenous plasma kallikrein, the abnormal F XII was cleaved with the same rate as normal F XII. However, kallikrein-cleaved abnormal F XII was not able to cleave factor XI and plasma prekallikrein, in contrast to activated normal F XII. Thus, these studies show that the functional defect of this abnormal F XII, denoted as F XII Bern, is due to the lack of protease activity of the kallikrein-cleaved molecule. Therefore, the structural defect is likely to be located in the light chain region of F XII, containing the enzymatic active site.

Abstract:
To achieve high-gain C-band waveguide amplifiers with integrated configuration, bent channel structures (S-, U-, and F-bend) based on buried Er3+/Yb3+ codoped phosphate glass waveguide channel fabricated by field-assisted annealing (FAA) have been designed in a 4´4 cm2 substrate. Using simulated-bend method, the optimal radius for the curved structure is derived to be 1.00 cm with loss coefficient of 0.0045 dB/cm. In the wavelength range of 1520-1575 nm, obvious gain enhancement for the bent structure waveguides is anticipated, and for the F-bend waveguide, the net gain at 1534 nm wavelength is derived to be 43.95 dB, which is much higher than the value of 26.67 and 13.20 dB in the U- and S-bend waveguides, respectively, and over three times higher than that of the straight one. The simulation results indicate that the bent structure designing is beneficial in obtaining high signal gain in buried Er3+/Yb3+ codoped phosphate glass waveguides, which lays the foundation for the further design and fabrication of integrated devices.

Abstract:
A series of dynamic fracture experiments on semicircular bend (SCB) marble specimens were conducted to characterize the loading rate effect using the INSTRON testing machine and the modified SHPB testing system. The fracture toughness of the marble specimens was measured from a low loading rate to a high loading rate (10-3~106 MPa·m1/2s-1). The results show that the fracture toughness will increase with the loading rate. Since the fracture toughness at a magnitude of 10-3 MPa·m1/2s-1 is regarded as the static fracture toughness, the specific value of DI F f (the dynamic increase factor of fracture toughness) can be obtained at the other loading magnitudes from dynamic fracture tests. To describe the variation in DI F f from low to high loading rates, a new continuous model of DI F f was put forward to express the quantitative relation between the loading rate and rock dynamic fracture toughness. It is shown that the new DI F f model can accurately describe the loading rate effect on the dynamic fracture testing data for rock materials.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the topological properties of sheet metal parts represented schematically (zero thickness, zero bend radii). Although such parts are usually non-manifold objects, the paper establishes a general topological invariant f = s + b + e + w − v − gnm + m regarding the number of facets, components, bends, free edges, welds, vertices holes and volumes, respectively. Corresponding Euler operators are derived, providing a basis for a modeling system for sheet metal parts. With this invariant, it is possible to reason about manufacturing processes, such as number of components and arrangement of bend lines and weld lines, using only a single qualitative model of the product. This capability is particularly useful in the preliminary stage of conceptual design. A corresponding topological invariant v − e + f = s + m − gnm is also proposed for general sheet models and thin walled objects.

Abstract:
The effect of pore volume fraction in unidirectional SiC fibre (Nicalon™)-reinforced SiC matrix composite fabricated by polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) process on three-point bend fracture behaviour has been studied. The pore volume fraction, f u, is varied by changing the number of PIP cycles, N. Results shows that the shear fracture mode is dominant at f u ≥ 0.36 and the strength increased with the decrease of f u. On the other hand, the tensile mode was dominant at f u ≤ 0.17 and the tensile strength was independent of fu. Transition of the fracture mode occurred when the ratio of shear strength to constant tensile strength was reached ≈ 1/30.

Physiol. 81: 1800–1806, 1996.—Alveolar parenchyma comprises two interacting tensile systems: the cable system (a network of linear condensations of connective tissue) and the membrane system (a network of quasiplanar alveolar septa). Inferences can be drawn about the mechanics of this structure from its configuration. We reported earlier (E. H. Oldmixon, J. P. Butler, and F. G. Hoppin, Jr. J. Appl. Physiol. 64: 299–307, 1988) that the angles between alveolar septa at the common three-way junctions (J) are nearly uniform, indicating that septal tensions are also nearly uniform. We now report on the interseptal angles at the next most common class of septal junction (B), a structure where two septa meet along a segment of the cable system. We find, first, that the distributions of interseptal angles at B junctions have means >120°, are narrow, and have few, if any, angles <120°. The findings of uniform 120° angles at J junctions and a cutoff below 120° at B junctions are also characteristic of soap films supported on a frame, which follows the physical principle of surface area minimization. We suggest that this principle may be operative in parenchymal development and remodeling.

The polyfluorinated title compounds, [MCl2(C16H16F4N2O2)] or [4,4′-(HCF2CH2OCH2)2-2,2′-bpy]MCl2 [M = Pd, (1), and M = Pt, (2)], have –C(Hα)2OC(Hβ)2CF2H side chains with H-atom donors at the α and β sites. The structures of (1) and (2) are isomorphous, with the nearly planar (bpy)MCl2 molecules stacked in columns. Within one column, π-dimer pairs alternate between a π-dimer pair reinforced with C—H...Cl hydrogen bonds (α,α) and a π-dimer pair reinforced with C—Hβ...F(—C) interactions (abbreviated as C—Hβ...F—C,C—Hβ...F—C). The compounds [4,4′-(CF3CH2OCH2)2-2,2′-bpy]MCl2 [M = Pd, (3), and M = Pt, (4)] have been reported to be isomorphous [Lu et al. (2012). J. Fluorine Chem. 137, 54–56], yet with disorder in the fluorous regions. The molecules of (3) [or (4)] also form similar stacks, but with alternating π-dimer pairs between the (α,β; α,β) and (β,β) forms. Through (C—)H...Cl hydrogen-bond interactions, one molecule of (1) [or (2)] is expanded into an aggregate of two inversion-related π-dimer pairs, one pair in the (α,α) form and the other pair in the (C—Hβ...F—C,C—Hβ...F—C) form, with the plane normals making an interplanar angle of 58.24 (3)°. Due to the demands of maintaining a high coordination number around the metal-bound Cl atoms in molecule (1) [or (2)], the ponytails of molecule (1) [or (2)] bend outward; in contrast, the ponytails of molecule (3) [or (4)] bend inward.

Abstract:
Shock-wave propagation through obstacles or internal ducts involves complex shock dynamics, shock-wave shear layer interactions and shock-wave boundary layer interactions arising from the associated diffraction phenomenon. This work addresses the applicability and effectiveness of the high-order numerical scheme for such complex viscous compressible flows. An explicit Discontinuous Spectral Element Method (DSEM) equipped with entropy-generation-based artificial viscosity method was used to solve compressible Navier–Stokes system of equations for this purpose. The shock-dynamics and viscous interactions associated with a planar moving shock-wave through a double-bend duct were resolved by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The shock-wave diffraction patterns, the large-scale structures of the shock-wave-turbulence interactions, agree very well with previous experimental findings. For shock-wave Mach number M s = 1.3466 and reference Reynolds number Re f = 10 6 , the predicted pressure signal at the exit section of the duct is in accordance with the literature. The attenuation in terms of overpressure for M s = 1.53 is found to be ≈0.51. Furthermore, the effect of reference Reynolds number is studied to address the importance of viscous interactions. The shock-shear layer and shock-boundary layer dynamics strongly depend on the Re f while the principal shock-wave patterns are generally independent of Re f .

Abstract:
Eukaryotic cells are defined by extensive intracellular compartmentalization, which requires dynamic membrane remodeling. FER/Cip4 homology-Bin/amphiphysin/Rvs (F-BAR) domain family proteins form crescent-shaped dimers, which can bend membranes into buds and tubules of defined geometry and lipid composition. However, these proteins exhibit an unexplained wide diversity of membrane-deforming activities in vitro and functions in vivo. We find that the F-BAR domain of the neuronal protein Nervous Wreck (Nwk) has a novel higher-order structure and membrane-deforming activity that distinguishes it from previously described F-BAR proteins. The Nwk F-BAR domain assembles into zigzags, creating ridges and periodic scallops on membranes in vitro. This activity depends on structural determinants at the tips of the F-BAR dimer and on electrostatic interactions of the membrane with the F-BAR concave surface. In cells, Nwk-induced scallops can be extended by cytoskeletal forces to produce protrusions at the plasma membrane. Our results define a new F-BAR membrane-deforming activity and illustrate a molecular mechanism by which positively curved F-BAR domains can produce a variety of membrane curvatures. These findings expand the repertoire of F-BAR domain mediated membrane deformation and suggest that unique modes of higher-order assembly can define how these proteins sculpt the membrane.

Abstract:
SummaryIn order to assess the clinical implications of hereditary F XII deficietrcy, all available members of Swiss families with F XII deficiency were investigated. Based on the F XII: C values and the family pedigree, the 74 subjects, aged 8-–82 years, were classified as homozygotes/double heterozygotes for F XII deficiency (n = 18), as obligatory (n = 20) or possibly (n = 25) heterozygotes, respectively, and as norrnals (n = 11). None of the 18 subjects with F XII: C <0.01 U/ml and only one possibly heterozygous woman had an abnormal bleeding tendency, confirming the notion that Hageman trait generally does not result in a hemorrhagic diathesis. Two of the 18 subjects with severe F XII deficiency had suffered from venous thromboembolic disease at age <40 years. One heterozygous woman had a leg ulcer probably due to venous thrombosis. Thus, whereas homozygous F XII deficiency may be associated with an increased risk for venous thromboembolic disease, partial F XII deficiency is not, by itself, a strong risk factor for thrombosis.Where as 17 of the 18 subjects with F xII : C <0.01 U/ml had no detectable F XIL Ag, one cross reacting material-positive F XII deficient subject (F XII:Ag = 0.11 U/ml) was identified. The dysfunctional F XII, present in this subject's plasma and tentatively called F XII Bern, is the fourth abnormal F XII molecule identified so far.

Abstract:
Thin electron microscope specimens often contain irregular bend contours (Figs. 1-3). Very regular bend patterns have, however, been observed around holes in some ion-milled specimens. The purpose of this investigation is twofold. Firstly, to find the geometry of bent specimens and the elastic properties of extremely thin foils and secondly, to obtain more information about the background to the observed regular patterns. The specimen surface is described by z = f(x,y,p), where p is a parameter, eg. the radius of curvature of a sphere. The beam is entering along the z—direction, which coincides with the foil normal, FN, of the undisturbed crystal surface (z = 0). We have here used FN = [001]. Furthermore some low indexed reflections are chosen around the pole FN and in our fcc crystal the following g-vectors are selected:

Abstract:
F. heydenii predominou no período seco (maio a setembro) e início do período chuvoso do ano (outubro e novembro). O número de exemplares portando ovos de D. hominis foi maior no final do período seco do ano, o que explica a alta incidência deste parasito em bovinos nos meses de setembro e outubro.

ABSTRACT The present paper is concerned with some generalizations of Bernstein’s approximation theorem. One of the most elegant and elementary proofs of the classic result, for a function f(x) defined on the closed interval [0, 1], uses the Bernstein’s polynomials of f, We shall concern the m-dimensional generalization of the Bernstein’s polynomials and the Bernstein’s approximation theorem by taking an (m−1)-dimensional simplex in cube [0, 1]m. This is motivated by the fact that in the field of mathematical biology naturally arouse dynamic systems determined by quadratic mappings of “standard” (m − 1)-dimensional simplex to self. The last condition guarantees saving of the fundamental simplex. Then there are surveyed some other the m-dimensional generalizations of the Bern- stein’s polynomials and the Bernstein’s approximation theorem.

Abstract:
A replacement for the original F-spanner is designed using computer-aided engineering (CAE) and the Taguchi method. In the design process, the L9(34) orthogonal table was used for parameter design. Four control factors are used: outer diameter, bend radius, angle, and connected fillet. Each factor is set to three levels with numerical analysis using ANSYS software. After performing an optimization analysis for the combination parameters, the prototype is created by rapid-prototyping (RP) and is found to improve operational safety in a piping system.

Abstract:
Flexural strength of a dental material reflects its ability to withstand tensile stresses and thus the fracture risk of a filling. The flexural strength of an experimental bioceramic Calcium aluminate-based (CA) dental restorative material was measured using three different methods with a composite (Tetric Ceram), a glass ionomer cement (Fuji II) and a phosphate cement (Harward) as references. The three test methods were: a) ISO 4049 for dental composites, 3-point bend test b) EN 843-1 for ceramic materials, 3-point bend test and c) ASTM F-394, biaxial ball-on-disc for ceramic materials. The strength of the CA-material, tested in the ball-on-disc method, is close to the theoretical strength based on the microstructure of the material (max. grain size of 15 μm). The composite material and the phosphate cement were rather insensitive to the test method, while the glass ionomer cement as the CA-material showed sensitivity towards the test method. A modified biaxial test method for evaluation of strength of dental materials in a close to real-life component is proposed.

Abstract:
The manufacturing techniques of sandwich composites containing core layers of weft-knit glass fabric (WG) and weft-knit carbon fabric (WC) with carbon fabric skin layers are discussed herein. The core layers of the sandwich composites were fabricated with WG-reinforced epoxy (E) resin, WC-reinforced epoxy resin, and polyurethane foam (F). The core layer was then stacked with two pieces of carbon fabric on the top and bottom surfaces to fabricate the sandwich composites. Three sandwich composites [plain carbon fabric sandwich composite with a WG core layer (C/E/WG), plain carbon fabric sandwich composite with a WC core layer (C/E/WC), and plain carbon fabric sandwich composite with an F core layer (C/E/F)] were developed in this study. A two-step manufacturing procedure was developed to achieve sufficient adhesiveness between the skin and core layers. The tensile, flatwise compressive, and longitudinal compressive properties of these sandwich composites were measured according to referred ASTM standards on a materials test system (MTS 810). Experimental results revealed that the WC core materials displayed excellent resistance to a flatwise compressive force and the foam core material show weak resistance. Under longitudinal compression, the skin and core layer of the C/E/F specimen separated, indicating that the C/E/F specimen could not withstand longitudinal force. Moreover, the C/E/WG and C/E/WC specimens both bend at the end of the same test.

Abstract:
The results of laboratory tests of the angle and the coefficient of friction of the soil on the steel surface in a state of rest and forced vibrations are given. The studies were conducted in the laboratory of the department of agricultural machinery of Voronezh State Agrarian University. They used a method of measuring these parameters on an inclined plane with produce bend. In the quiescent state friction angle was found to be φ = 0,548 radian, which corresponds to the friction coefficient f = 0,61. The data are obtained as a result of the average of 10 repetitions, the standard deviation σ = 0,003 radian.
