Abstract:
This thesis explores the initial expansion of the seminary program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beyond North America from 1967 – 1970. During these years, seminary expanded to Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. William E. Berrett, as the administrator of the seminary and institute program, is involved in each phase of the program's expansion and therefore acts as a constant influence throughout the study. This study explores the conceiving and developing of the home study seminary program as well as the pilot program coordinated by Don Bond in the Midwestern United States. The efforts of the first international coordinators during the first year of expansion are related and examined. Administrators selected John Madsen to establish the program in Great Britain, J. L. Jaussi to establish the program in Australia, and Rhett James to establish the program in New Zealand. Each of these coordinators identified the challenges they faced and successes the program achieved. This study highlights the collective concern of Church Board members, local priesthood leaders, and Church education administrators for the youth of the Church as they approved, developed, and established the program internationally in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand.

National land agencies ignite hundreds of prescribed fires every year throughout the Rocky Mountain West. When a national land agency proposes a prescribed fire they must by statute take public opinion into account before igniting the burn. The public interest of a prescribed fire may be to decrease the acreage of the burn in order to save animal habitat or possibly to stop a burn entirely. A theoretical model where a land agency maximizes a net social expected benefit was used to develop comparative static results in the empirical analysis. Using county Sierra Club membership as a proxy for protests, this thesis analyzes acreage differences and timing differences of prescribed fires. First, a probit model is used to evaluate the probability of a wildland urban interface prescribed fire. The regression results present a higher probability of wildland urban interface prescribed fires at the median of county Sierra Club membership as a percent of county population, ceteris paribus. County Sierra Club membership as a percent of county population was not statistically significant in explaining proportion acreage changes from proposed to actual acres burnt. Timing differences, on the other hand, were found to increase as county Sierra Club membership as a percent of county population increased, ceteris paribus. The empirical results imply that land agencies treat their prescribed fires that are in the wildland urban interface the same. There are also timing differences that can be explained through pressure from group interest in land agency policies.

A disfunção erétil pode ser definida como a dificuldade parcial ou total de se obter e/ou manter a ereção peniana para um desempenho sexual satisfatório. Para que a ereção peniana ocorra, há necessidade de aumento do fluxo sanguíneo para o pênis por relaxamento de seu tecido erétil, o corpo cavernoso. Além disso, é preciso que o retorno venoso do pênis diminua para que a ereção se mantenha, processo que conta com a participação da veia dorsal peniana. O papel da serotonina (5-hidroxitriptamina, 5-HT) para a ereção peniana não está bem estabelecido, apesar de crescer o uso de fármacos que alteram sua homeostasia, como a fluoxetina. Além disso, estudos em nosso laboratório demonstraram a capacidade do corpo cavernoso (CC) em captar a 5-HT e metabolizá-la em 5-HIAA, seu principal metabólito. Outros trabalhos mostraram que, após ser captada pela célula vascular, a 5-HT é capaz de modular a contração do músculo liso por um mecanismo denominado serotonilação. Deste modo e sabendo preliminarmente da capacidade do CC de rato contrair na presença da 5-HT, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi o de caracterizar farmacologicamente essa resposta. Na análise de contrações neurogênicas do CC por estímulo elétrico de campo, observamos que o principal neurotransmissor liberado no CC de rato capaz de contraí-lo é a noradrenalina, a qual contrai o CC por ativação dos receptores a1-adrenérgicos. Esses dados sugerem pouca ou nenhuma liberação neuronal de 5-HT. Apesar disso, observamos que a 5-HT exógena é capaz de gerar uma resposta contrátil não reprodutível em CC de rato, sugerindo a existência de taquifilaxia. No entanto, não foi observada resposta taquifilática na veia dorsal peniana exposta à 5-HT 10 µM. Utilizando a metil-ß-ciclodextrina, um tensoativo capaz de sequestrar colesterol causando um desarranjo de estruturas de membrana como as cavéolas, verificamos que a resposta taquifilática não ocorreu através da internalização de receptores pelas caveolas. Além disso, verificamos que a inibição do metabolismo da 5-HT com o uso de pargilina, bem como a inibição da captação de 5-HT com o uso de fluoxetina, não alteraram o perfil da resposta contrátil induzida por 5-HT. Além disso, o metabólito da 5-HT, o 5-HIAA foi incapaz de gerar uma resposta contrátil. Esses dados sugerem ser improvável que a 5-HT intracelular seja importante no processo de contração do CC de rato. Com o uso de agonistas dostipos de receptores 5-HT1 e 5-HT2 e de antagonistas dos tipos de dos receptores 5-HT1, 5-HT2, 5-HT3 e 5-HT7, demonstramos que receptores 5-HT2 e, mais especificamente os do subtipo 5-HT2A, sejam os principais responsáveis por gerar a contração observada no CC de rato. Podemos concluir que a ativação de receptores 5-HT2A pela 5-HT em CC de ratos induz uma resposta contrátil que sofre dessensibilização com exposições repetidas à amina, fenômeno não observado na veia dorsal peniana. Desta forma, por não manter seu efeito contrátil no CC, e por contrair a veia dorsal peniana, a 5-HT pode contribuir para a função erétil em ratos.

Abstract : Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to obtain and/or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual performance. Penile erection occurs by the increase in blood flow into the penis in parallel with the relaxation of the corpus cavernosum (CC), its erectile tissue. Furthermore, a decrease in venous return from the penis is also necessary to maintain erection, a process that involves the participation of the dorsal penile vein. The role of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in penile erection is not well established despite the increasing use of drugs that alter its homeostasis, such as fluoxetine. Moreover, data from our laboratory show the ability of the CC to take up 5-HT and metabolize it into its major metabolite, 5-HIAA. Other studies have shown that after 5-HT uptake by the vascular smooth muscle cell, it is able to modulate smooth muscle contraction intracellularly by a mechanism called serotonylation. In light of these aspects, and knowing preliminarily the contractile ability of 5-HT, the purpose of this study was to characterize pharmacologically the contractile response of the rat CC to 5-HT. By evaluating neurogenic contractions induced by electrical field stimulation, we observed that norepinephrine is the main contractile neurotransmitter released in the rat CC, acting via stimulation of a1-adrenergic receptors. These data suggest nerves in the CC release little or no 5-HT. Nevertheless, we observed that exogenous 5-HT is able to induce a non-reproducible contractile response in the rat CC, suggesting tachyphylaxis. However, this tachyphylactic response to 5-HT was not observed in the dorsal penile vein. Using methyl-ß-cyclodextrin, a drug that depletes cholesterol from the cell membrane and causes a disruption of caveolae structures, we found that the tachyphylactic response does not occur through 5-HT receptor internalization via caveolae. Furthermore, we found that the inhibition of 5-HT metabolism by pargyline, as well the inhibition of 5-HT uptake by fluoxetine did not alter the profile of the contractile response induced by 5-HT. Moreover, 5-HIAA was unable to produce a contractile response. These data suggest that intracellular 5-HT is unlikely important to contraction of the rat CC. Using agonists of the 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 families of 5-HT receptors and antagonists of the 5-HT1, 5-HT2, 5-HT3 and 5-HT7 families of 5-HT receptors, we observed that the 5-HT2 receptors, more specifically the 5-HT2A, are the main responsiblefor the contraction induced by 5-HT in the rat CC. We conclude that the activation of the 5-HT2A receptor by 5-HT induces a tachyphylactic contractile response in the CC, but not in the dorsal penile vein. This inability of 5-HT to maintain a sustained contraction of the CC, allied to its ability to contract the penile dorsal vein, suggest it may contribute to erectile function in rats.

Le territoire de l'Etang-de-Berre, situé entre Marseille et la Camargue et dont le centre est occupé par un étang de 15. 500 hectares, est né au lendemain de la guerre avec la réalisation du port de Fos-sur-Mer. Dégradé par le pollution, la réhabilitation engagée depuis dix ans n'a pas permis de faire de ce site un espace cohérent malgré ses qualités originales. L'analyse paysagère proposée ici retrace le processus de disqualification progressive du site jusqu'à sa perspective actuelle de réhabilitation. Elle s'appuie sur la mise en valeur de ses caractères significatifs suivant les trois échelles anthropologiques du territoire (aménagement, paysage et perception individuelle), à partir de l'analyse des représentations locales. L'identité territoriale de ce site imperceptible fait apparaître de nouveaux critères de définition des territoires récents à travers les valeurs attachées à la définition d'un "corps habitant". Il fournit les motifs d'un nouveau "paysage moderne"
Located between the city of Marseille and the Camargue region, the territory known as the "Etang-de-Berre" is centered on a 15. 500 hectares lagoon. This territory was created soon after the end of world war II in relation with the settlement of the industrial port of Fos-sur-Mer. Despite the positive and original qualities of this region, the global amount of industrial pollution greatly affected a potential outcome engaged ten years ago. The present analysis is conducted through the historical study and classification of social representations from the process of disqualification to today's effort of rehabilitation. It is based on the three anthropological scales of space : the planning, the landscape and the individual perception. Finally, the descrption of this modern space contributes to elaborate new ways of conceiving recent territories with the definition of an "inhabitant body" and its values, which could become essential figures for imagining a "modfern landscape"

Depuis quarante ans, des mutations importantes bouleversent l'agriculture de cette region. Cultures et methodes traditionnelles abandonnees en provence : cerealiculture, oleiculture et viticulture extensives en recul, fin de l'elevage ovin et porcin. Des exploitants marseillais ont localement revitalise l'agriculture. Les ressources en eau et un microclimat exceptionnel ont permis l'intensification des cultures depuis 1955 avec developpement de cultures maraicheres abritees et irriguees. L'huile d'olive de la basse vallee de l'arc, originalite des bouches-du-rhone, reste une activite ancestrale. L'urbanisation, l'industrialisation et les voies de communication attaquent le monde rural et causent le declin d'une agriculture qui necessitait une politique de defense lorsqu'existaient dynamisme ou potentialite de mutation. Des 1970, est elaboree une politique officielle volontariste de sauvegarde du milieu peri-urbain au sud-est et en ville-nouvelle de vitrolles. L'avenir agricole reste precaire : la croissance urbaine et industrielle reste une menace. Le seul recours est une agriculture speculatrice, forte, reconnue, adaptee aux nouvelles donnes du marche commun
For forty years, important transformations have been disrepting agriculture in this area. Traditional crops and methods are being abandoned in provence, extensive cereal farming, olive and wine-growing are declining while sheep and pig breeding are disappearing. Farmers from the marseilles area have revitalized agriculture in places. Since 1955, the abundant water resources combined with an exceptionally favourable microclimate have, with the development of irrigation and sheltering techniques in market-gardening for example, resulted in higher crop-yields. However, the production of olive oil in the lower valley of the arc, characteristic of the bouches-du-rhone, remains a traditional activity. Nevertheless, urban and industrial expansion together with new means of communication are gradually encroaching upon the rural world, causing the decline of an agriculture which would already have required a protectionist policy at a time when it was still dynamic and capable of modernizing itself. Luigi Pirandello's two short stories La verita and Certi obblighi and the play derived from them Il berretto a sonagli seem to be, at least on the surface, about adultery. The three male protagonists' dilemmas come about as a result of their wives' sexual transgressions, which consequently impose certain "obligations" upon them. The themes of adultery and betrayal, however, are merely surface elements, used to explore the theatrical nature of identity and of all social experience. Specifically, the three works show how role-playing-within-roles safeguards the identity of the betrayed husbands, by protecting them from social humiliation.
Since all Pirandellian characters role-play, and as a consequence portray and assume multiple identities, this thesis examines the function and significance of this technique in both narrative and theatrical contexts. It attempts to show that while the device is a feature common to all three works, it is in the dramatic adaptation that role-playing in relation to identity acquires its more visible and effective treatment.

La premiere etape de l'etude consiste en un constat de l'existant, a travers des bilans matiere et enthalpie des unites du complexe. C'est l'etape de base qui a determine les directions de recherche. Les bilans sont illustres par des diagrammes de sankey. De grands potentiels ayant ete detectes, l'etude s'est poursuivie par la remise en question de l'integration thermique des unites. L'economie d'energie par surface d'echange supplementaire, doit se faire selon une methode rigoureuse basee sur le second principe de la thermodynamique, la methode de pincement. Il est ainsi possible de mesurer l'impact sur le complexe de la meilleure adequation quantite de chaleur/temperature d'echange. D'autre part, les rejets thermiques etant connus, leur revalorisation est abordee avec l'introduction de la technologie des thermo-transformateurs et des frigo-pompes. Cette application permet de modifier le niveau thermique des rejets afin de les adapter a une reutilisation interne. L'impact de l'introduction d'une technologie nouvelle sur un site tres integre et optimise a ainsi pu etre mesure. L'etude se termine par une analyse exergetique des grands elements du systeme (reacteurs, colonnes a distiller, fours). Les lieux de degradation de l'energie ayant ete reperes, des solutions provenant d'echanges avec des laboratoires de recherches internationaux allant des plus conventionnelles aux plus avancees sont proposees. Une rapide synthese, decoulant de ces etapes, ebauche des reponses a des strategies energetiques a court, moyen et long terme (source, vecteur, technologies nouvelles) en faisant place a l'environnement du complexe

L’étang de Berre est un écosystème lagunaire historiquement perturbé par de forts rejets industriels et par des apports importants en eau douce naturels et anthropiques (centrale hydroélectrique EDF). Alors que les politiques de réhabilitation initiées depuis 1994 commencent à enregistrer leurs premiers succès, l'introduction et la prolifération de Mnemiopsis leidyi en 2005 pourraient limiter leur efficacité. L’originalité de cette étude est d’associer océanographie et sociologie afin d’estimer l’impact de M. leidyi sur le fonctionnement de ce socio-écosystème. Nous avons pu montrer que la population de M. leidyi est capable de se maintenir sur une large gamme de températures (3°C-28°C) et de salinités (10-30), pour une quantité de carbone disponible > 3 µgC L-1, la température étant un facteur déterminant dans la dynamique de la population. L’absence Mnemiopsis au cours d’évènements froids et sa réapparition plusieurs mois après laissent penser soit à l’existence d’une zone refuge qui a été déterminée (étang de Vaine) favorable au maintien des cténaires. Les fortes proliférations de M. leidyi affectent principalement la pêche professionnelle (fort colmatage des filets, mutilation des prises, dégradation accélérée du matériel, augmentation de la pénibilité) induisant une perte économique annuelle estimée à 50 %. Dans le cadre interdisciplinaire, la compréhension des interactions biologiques et anthropiques a permis de montrer que Mnemiopsis présentait une entrave à la mise en œuvre des efforts de réhabilitation
The Berre Lagoon is an ecosystem historically disturbed by strong industrial discharges and significant freshwaters inputs from both natural and anthropogenic (EDF hydroelectric power station) origins. While rehabilitation policies initiated in 1994 are already showing some success, the introduction and proliferation of Mnemiopsis leidyi since 2005 could limit their effectiveness. The originality of this study is to associate oceanography and sociology in order to estimate the impact of M. leidyi on the functioning of this socio-ecosystem. We were able to show that the population of M. leidyi is maintained within a large range of temperatures (3 °C-28 °C) and salinities (10-30), with a quantity of carbon available ~ 3 mg C L-1 or more, temperature being a determining factor in population dynamics. The absence of this ctenophore on during cold events and its recurrence several months later suggests either the existence of an external source or the presence of a refuge zone that has been determined (Vaine lagoon) favourable to the maintenance of the ctenophores. The strong proliferation of M. leidyi in the Berre lagoon mainly affects professional fishermen. The clogging of nets, the mutilation of catches, the accelerated degradation of the material and the increase in the strenuousness induce an annual economic loss estimated at 50 %. Here in our interdisciplinary framework, the understanding of the biological and the anthropogenic interactions has shown that Mnemiopsis is tempering with the implementation of the rehabilitation efforts

Dans un contexte de forte compétition internationale entre les villes, les anciens quartiers ouvriers représentent de véritables espaces stratégiques au niveau local. Leur localisation dans la ville, leurs potentialités foncières et immobilières, et leur attractivité auprès de populations issues de catégories sociales favorisées et qualifiées, constituent autant d'enjeux spatiaux, sociaux, et symboliques qui conduisent les autorités publiques et les acteurs privés locaux à impulser puis à contrôler un processus de reconquête à partir d'opérations de renouvellement urbain. Certains habitants, dont la présence ou l'installation ne sont pas recherchées par l'action institutionnelle, résistent, à travers leur habiter, au changement généré par le renouvellement urbain. Les habitants produisent des continuités populaires par leurs présences résidentielles, les pratiques quotidiennes qu'ils déploient à l'échelle du quartier, ou par des représentations individuelles et collectives. Ces différentes formes de continuités populaires contribuent in fine à remettre en cause la vision politique ou marchande du changement urbain des centres anciens. Cette recherche prend appui sur des observations réalisées dans deux anciens quartiers ouvriers dont la reconquête, initiée à des périodes différentes, ne se trouve pas au même stade d'avancement : Berriat Saint-Bruno à Grenoble (France) et Alcântara à Lisbonne (Portugal). En privilégiant le croisement des regards mobilisés, des méthodes d'investigation et des résultats, la démarche adoptée a pour objectif de comprendre la diversité des situations produites par le renouvellement urbain en centre ancien, et d'interpréter la variété des changements induits au quotidien.

Depuis une vingtaine d’années, les activités culturelles et créatives (art, architecture, etc.) sont plébiscitées par les pouvoirs publics et les scientifiques pour leur rôle culturel mais aussi économique, social et urbain. Leur agglomération spatiale dans d’anciens quartiers industriels et ouvriers fait peser de multiples enjeux sur ces territoires. Planifiée par les décideurs politiques ou construite par des dynamiques spontanées, cette agglomération transforme des espaces en friche en quartiers créatifs. Ces quartiers sont le lieu d’ancrage de clusters qui lient les travailleurs créatifs dans un réseau social d’échange et de coopération marqué par l’entre-soi. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’interroger le fonctionnement et les enjeux des quartiers créatifs en vérifiant l’hypothèse de la mise en place d’un club de travailleurs créatifs au sein de ces territoires. Défini comme un regroupement volontaire d’individus autour de la jouissance exclusive de biens et de services, le club est porteur à la fois de dynamiques collectives de partage et de logiques d’entre-soi et de ségrégation. Questionner son existence dans les quartiers créatifs introduit une réflexion autour de la cohésion et de la fragmentation sociales d’une part, et de la créativité et de l’innovation d’autre part.Fondée sur une analyse qualitative croisée de trois quartiers créatifs des villes de Nantes, Marseille et Grenoble, cette thèse montre comment des clubs de travailleurs créatifs se forment dans ces territoires, quel est leur fonctionnement et quels sont leurs impacts sociaux et économiques
For twenty years, cultural and creative activities (art,architecture, etc.) have been promoted by public authorities and scientists for their cultural, economic,social and urban roles. Their spatial agglomeration informer industrial districts implies multiple issues on these territories. Planned by political decision-makers or resulting from spontaneous dynamics, this agglomeration transforms industrial wasteland into creative quarters.Clusters that link creative workers in collaborative social networks are embedded in these quarters. These social networks are characterized by cooperation and a senseof togetherness.This thesis aims to question the functioning and the stakes of creative quarters by confirming the hypothesis of the establishment of a creative workers’ club within these territories. The club is defined as a voluntary grouping of individuals around the exclusive enjoymen tof goods and services. It carries both collective dynamics of sharing and logics of exclusion and segregation.Questioning its existence in creative quarters induces a reflection on social cohesion and fragmentation on the one hand, and creativity and innovation on the other one. Based on a qualitative analysis of three creative quarters in the cities of Nantes, Marseille and Grenoble, this thesis illustrates how clubs of creative workers are formed in these territories, how they work and what their social and economic impacts are

L’industrialisation de l’étang de Berre au cours du 20ème siècle s’est accompagnée d’importants rejets en éléments traces métalliques (ETM) qui ont été en partie accumulés dans les sédiments et sont aujourd’hui susceptibles d’être remobilisés vers la colonne d’eau ou d’être intégrés dans le réseau trophique et d’entrainer un risque écotoxicologique.La reconstitution de l’évolution temporelle et spatiale de la contamination des sédiments montre que les niveaux de contaminations actuels des sédiments de surface sont les plus bas depuis plusieurs décennies en lien avec l’efficacité des réglementations sur les rejets industriels mises en place dans les années 1970. Ces niveaux sont faibles à modérés en surface mais de très fortes contaminations existent quelques centimètres sous la surface des sédiments.Le rôle des oxy-hydroxydes de Fe ou de Mn et des sulfures dans le contrôle de la mobilité des ETM dans le sédiment et leurs flux à l’interface eau/sédiment a pu être démontré grâce à la modélisation du transport et des réactions des composés chimiques et des ETM dans les eaux interstitielles, de leurs profils de concentrations dans la fraction réactive de la phase particulaire et d’expérimentations en conditions contrôlées au laboratoire. L’oxygénation de la colonne d’eau constitue le principal paramètre influençant cette mobilité et ces flux, et l’influence d’une réoxygénation des fonds dans le Grand Etang est discutée.Enfin, la biodisponibilité des ETM et le stress (géno)toxicologique qu’ils peuvent constituer pour un organisme benthique cible, le polychète Nereis succinea, ont été évalués par l’estimation des fractions potentiellement biodisponibles dans les sédiments (extractions chimiques et Diffusive Gradient in Thin-films), par la mesure des concentrations bioaccumulées et par l’utilisation de biomarqueurs de défense (métallothionéines) et de dommages (tests de génotoxicité). Certains ETM qui sont fortement bioaccumulés représentent un risque potentiel et pourraient être impliqués dans la dégradation de la macrofaune benthique
The industrialization of the Berre lagoon in the 20th century was accompanied by large releases trace metals, which were partially accumulated in sediments and are now likely to be remobilized to the water column or be integrated into the food chain and cause an ecotoxicological risk.The reconstruction of the temporal and spatial trends of sediment contamination shows that current levels of contamination of surface sediments have been the lowest for decades in agreement with the effectiveness of regulations on industrial releases set up in the years 1970. These levels are low to moderate in surface but very high contamination exist a few centimeters below the sediment surface.The role of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides and sulfides in controlling the mobility of ETM in the sediment and fluxes at the water/sediment interface has been demonstrated through the modeling of transport and reactions of chemical compounds and trace metals in the pore waters, their concentration profiles in the reactive fraction of the particulate phase and experiments under controlled laboratory conditions. The oxygenation of the water column is the main parameter influencing the mobility and fluxes and the influence of reoxygenation of bottom water column in the Grand Etang is discussed.Finally, the bioavailability of trace metals and adverse effects they may constitute for a target benthic organism, the polychaete Nereis succinea, were evaluated by estimating the potentially bioavailable fraction in sediments (chemical extractions and Diffusive Gradient in Thin-films), by measuring bioaccumulated concentrations and by the use of biomarkers (metallothioneins and genotoxicity assays). Some highly bioaccumulated trace metals pose a potential risk and might be involved in the degradation of the benthic macrofauna

Au début du 20ème siècle, l'étang de Berre était occupée par de larges prairies sous-marines de Zostera qui ont fortement réduit sous l'impact des pollutions et arrivées massives d'eau douce par le canal EDF. Pollutions et arrivées d'eaux ont beaucoup réduit mais les herbiers ne s'étendent pas vers le large. Cette thèse a donc pour but d'analyser les interactions entre les herbiers sous-marins de l'étang de Berre basé sur l'hypothèse que la dynamique hydro-sédimentaire peut jouer un rôle dans le maintien des herbiers à l'état relique. Dans cette lagune, le vent conditionne l'hydrodynamisme en générant des vagues de vent et des courants.L'atténuation des vagues par l'herbier est en lien avec la hauteur des vagues (dépendant de la vitesse du vent, la longueur de fetch et des effets de réfraction lié à la morphologie de la anse) et est modulée par la biométrie de l'herbier, le niveau d'eau ou la présence de courants. Alors qu'au dessus de l'herbier, les courants sont rapides et fortement influencés par le vent et les vagues de vent, une couche de transition eau-canopée permet la dissipation de l'énergie des vagues et des courants. Dans la canopée, les courants sont très atténués grâce à la présence de l'herbier. L'herbier apparaît comme un élément important de la dynamique sédimentaire car il peut, par sa simple présence, réduire l'hydrodynamisme et modifier l'évolution du fond dans et en arrière de l'herbier et protéger la plage. Le niveau de récurrence de vents forts semble contrôler les évolutions sédimentaires.Les fortes interactions de l'herbier avec la dynamique hydro-sédimentaire laissent penser qu'elle pourrait limiter leur extension dans des zones plus exposées
Berre lagoon was occupied by extensive meadows at the turn of the 20th century which regressed down under the impact of urban and industrial pollution and inflow of the EDF canal. Even though freshwater inputs and pollutions were drastically reduced respectively in the 1980s and 1990s, meadows have not significantly gained ground. This thesis aims at analysing the interactions between seagrass meadows of Berre lagoon, hydrodynamics and sedimentary processes, based on the postulate that these mechanisms are important in the maintenance of the meadows in their present dispersed form. In the lagoon, winds constitute the dominant influence on hydrodynamics in the lagoon by generating wind waves and currents. Wave attenuation is linked to wave height, which is, in turn, dependent on wind intensity and fetch length and modified by the bay morphology. Wave attenuation is also modulated by meadow biometry, and by water levels and currents.Whereas currents are strong and strongly influenced by wind and wind waves above the meadow, a transition canopy-water layer dissipates waves and currents. In the canopy, currents are thus attenuated.The meadow is not just a passive element in the overall sediment dynamics since it reduces energy and thus modifies substrate changes within and in the back of the meadow, thus protecting the shoreline. However, it is the recurrence of strong wind that seems to drive sedimentary changes. The strong interactions between the meadow and the hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes could limit the extension of the meadow in areas more exposed to waves

L'Etang de Berre se situe dans le Sud-Est de la France. Il est l'exutoire de trois cours d'eau à régime méditerranéen marqué : l'Arc, la Touloubre et la Cadière. Depuis plusieurs décennies, l'Etang de Berre connaît un profond dysfonctionnement. L'approche géomorphologique présentée dans ce travail permet de déterminer une méthode d'évaluation des apports fluviaux de matières en suspension à l'Étang de Berre et le fonctionnement hydrosédimentaire des systèmes fluviaux. Elle s'appuie sur l'identification des zones potentiellement productrices de matériaux, la quantification des flux de MES de l'Arc, de la Touloubre et de la Cadière vers l'Étang de Berre, pendant la période d'observation (septembre 1998-décembre 2000) et l'extension dans le temps (sur la période 1961-2000) des résultats. De 1961-2000, les flux moyens de MES sont de 23102 t/an pour l'Arc, 6715 t/an pour la Touloubre et 3456 t/an pour la Cadière. En moyenne, près de 26 % des MES arrivant dans l'Etang de Berre, ont une origine fluviale par opposition aux apports duranciens.

Abstract:
Dans l'étang de Berre, les apports excessifs en eau douce entraînent souvent des variations brusques de la salinité et des apports en azote parfois abondants. Les processus de régénération sédimentaire et d'élimination d'azote constituent des phénomènes majeurs pouvant expliquer le développement phytoplanctoniques et contrôler l'eutrophisation. L'étude de ces processus a été réalisée dans 2 stations ayant subi des historiques de variations de salinité différents. RDNA et anammox étaient négligeables. La dénitrification (couplée à la nitrification) serait le principal processus de sortie de N2 de l'étang. La forte production primaire pélagique utilisant l'ammonium a pu être expliquée par les processus de régénération, contrairement au nitrate dont la demande pélagique serait soutenue par des apports externes. Comme la salinité est susceptible d'influencer les processus d'azote, des microcosmes ont été utilisés afin d'évaluer la sensibilité de ces processus (résistance, résilience, shift) face aux variations à court terme de la salinité. Les 2 stations ont présenté des réponses différentes (dénitrification et nitrate réduction plus résilientes que la nitrification), suggérant que les stress halins à long terme influencent les réponses à court terme. Une hypothèse serait que la diversité et la structure des communautés joueraient un rôle crucial dans le maintien des taux d'activité. Dans cette étude, seule la communauté nitrifiante (AO) a été étudiée. Les AO et leurs transcrits étaient spécifiques aux sites et leurs abondances changeaient faiblement entre les microcosmes (résistance plus forte dans le site fréquemment soumis à des fluctuations de salinité)
The Berre lagoon receives excess freshwater leading to strong changes in the ecosystem salinity and in the nutrient inputs. Regeneration processes and the N2 removal of nitrogen are of a particular interest as they can explain the planktonic development and control the eutrophication state. These processes were studied in 2 stations with different patterns of long term stresses. DNRA and anammox were negligible. Denitrification (particularly the one coupled to nitrification) would be the main N2 removal in the lagoon. The high primary production based on N-NH4+ can be explained by the regeneration processes, while the primary production based on N-NO3- might be sustained by external inputs. As salinity susceptible to influence directly or indirectly the nitrogen processes, a microcosm approach was used in order to assess their sensitivity (resistance, resilience, shifts) to short term salinity fluctuations. Overall, towards the same kind of perturbations, the two stations responded differently (denitrification and nitrate reduction exhibited showed higher resilience than nitrification.), suggesting that long-term saline stresses would influence short-term responses. We suggest that the diversity and the structure of the communities would be crucial in their functional redundancy and thereby in the maintenance of the rates. In this study, we focused on the total structure of the nitrifying community (AO). AO and their transcripts were site-specific and their abundances changed slightly between microcosms (higher resistance in the site subject to frequent salinity fluctuations compared to the other site which is not affected by changes in the in situ salinity)
