Abstract:
In my master thesis, I decided to focus on process of design. Nowadays, there is huge difference between the process of software design and hardware design due to technological problem. Software design development has more flexibility than hardware design development. In addition, it can be adjustable for each user and can involve user in design process. In the future, some of technology such as 3D printer, modifiable material, and so on, will enable hardware designer to use software design process to design hardware. The process can make better relation between user and product. In this thesis, I used real user to simulate the future process. I did a lot of interview to the user and involve him to design process. I used current technology to interact with user as much as possible, for example, I used 3D scanner to scan his body data to make perfect size reference for his vehicle. In the end, I could design something unexpected in good way thanks to collaboration with the user. It was also unexpected for him, but he was satisfied with the result so much. I believe this process has a lot of potential to make better relation and story between user and product.

Abstract:
The findings of the first reported guest centric encapsulation study are presented within. The guests were of interest as petrol and diesel (fuel) additives, with the focus on 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (2-EHN), di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), aniline, N-methylaniline (NMA) and N,Ndimethylaniline CNNDMA). Complexation with 2-EHN and DTBP was achieved with the novel calix[4]arene derivative, 5, 11, 17, 23-tetra-tert-butyl, 25, 27-bis(oxyethylphenylurea), 26, 28-dihydroxycalix[4}arene, CA(III). This was confirmed in solution by the use of NMR techniques. The multi-step procedure to yield a tetrol cavitand. with recent updates to the procedures are fully described. A new carceplex system with aniline encapsulated, carceplex aniline (4, 24- 5,5'- 6,10- 11 , 11'- 12, 16- 17, 17'- 18, 22- 23, 23'- 4', 24'- 6',10'- 12', 16'- 18 ',22' dodecamethylenedioxy, 2, 8, 14,20, 2', 8' ,14', 20'-octapentyl-bis-calix[4]arene aniline) was produced in a pioneering pressure tube encapsulation follwing unsuccessful attempts under reflux conditions. A pyrogallol[4]arene with pentyl pendant group (2, 8, 14, 20-tetrapentylpyrogallol[4]arene) PA(I) was synthesised and successfully employed for self-assembled complex formation with aniline, NMA and NNDMA. These complexes were found to be stable in polar and apolar media at 313 K over a duration of 2 months. The complexes were of stoichiometry 10:1 (aniline: PA(I)), 12:1 (NMA : PA(I)), and 4:1 (NNDMA: PA(l)). Significant variation was observed when complexes were analysed by TGA in air up to 800 °C compared to control. PA(I) . aniline and PA(I) . NMA displayed solubilities in apolar media making them suitable for analysis in test engines as fuel additives. The first report of a (two-step) carcerand synthesised from pyrogallol[4]arene, PA(I) with the introduction of methylene dioxy spanning and bridging groups, yielding the novel carcerand 4,24- 5, 4'.- 6, 5' - 10, 1\ ' - 12, 16- 17, 16'- 18, 17'- 22, 23'- 23, 24' - 6', 10'- 18', 22' dodecamethylenedioxy, 2, 8, 14, 20, 2', 8', 14', 20' -octapentyl-bis-calix[4]arene is also presented.

The proposed system executes the capacity planning function at two separate levels of detail by integrating rough cut capacity planning with finite capacity planning. The two planning mechanisms are also integrated with a shop floor data collection system which has been designed for the assembly environment. Data interaction is achieved between the capacity planning modules and the shop floor data collection system via an Interface ManagemenSt ystem which ensurest hat the scheduled ata containedi n the individual systemsr emainsi n synchronisationa t all times. The capacity planning system also includes the design and development of a large scale display facility which is able to accommodateth e large volume of scheduled ata required to be viewed for finite capacity planning. This facility has been designed using multiple co-ordinated screens which are linked by a local area network. A data interface and parallel processing facility is incorporated in the design which enable the processing of a software application to be distributed over multiple nodes.

A new facility seeks to manufacture inlets for the turbine of the new NDA aircraft. The inlet is a new design and has never been built before. To complicate matters the manufacturer, Aeron 2 Company, has not traditionally produced any inlets, let alone at the expected production rates for the new aircraft that already has thousands of orders. It was decided that in order to meet demand production must be automated in a similar way to the automotive industry. Aeron, and the commercial aerospace industry as a whole, are inexperienced with automation systems and they believed that they lacked the in-house knowledge to develop and integrate their own automated system. They entered into a contract with a robotics integrator that is has traditionally operated within the automotive industry for delivery of a "turnkey" system. This research covers a six-month period that overlaps with the beginning of Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of the automated assembly line. Initial observations hinted at the possibility of a strained relationship between Aeron and its automation integrator. This thesis sought to understand if the relationship was indeed strained, and if so, what were the causes and could it be improved? The Aeron group most involved with this system purchase, referred to as TWS, is used as a case-study to investigate the different factors that can affect an interorganizational relationship during development of a technically complex system. The research and recommendations can be applied to other companies that are involved in inter-organizational relationships founded upon development of technically complex projects. An inductive-deductive iterative approach was used in three phases to conduct this research. Beginning with background research in phase one an inductive approach is used to develop a qualitative model of the inter-organizational system. This model leads to additional questions regarding inter-organizational relationships and their more important factors, such as expectations and trust; namely, what are the expectations that are held by each party in the relationship and what are their impacts? These additional questions are addressed in a deductive manner in phase two. Through the use of surveys sent to different automation teams across the organization, data was collected that reflected the different relationships. These survey results indicate interesting customer perceptions of their respective automation suppliers. At the time of this writing all of the automation projects are perceived to be technically complex, yet some contractors are perceived as more technically capable than others. These data also indicate a general lack of trust. Expectations are addressed using a simple matrix that outlines the different technical and management expectations held by TWS in regards to the equipment being purchased and their integrator. A number of expectations held by TWS are unrealistic and have, as of this writing, gone unfulfilled. The third and final phase revisited the initial model in phase one and made modifications based on findings from phase two. For technically complex projects, such as the development of an automated assembly line using immature technology to build a new product, it is impossible to capture every design specification for the system. Design changes will occur. It is imperative that correct expectations regarding the equipment and the firm's capabilities are correctly set at the beginning of the project to reduce a shortfall in expected performance versus actual performance. Expectations, including those that are unrealistic, that go unfulfilled lead to decay in trust. This decay in trust in turn leads to a decreased likelihood in project success. It is recommended that Aeron shy away from "turnkey" systems for such state-of-the-art projects in the future, or at least until Aeron becomes more familiar with automated assembly and their integrators become more familiar with aerospace requirements. This research is most applicable to commercial aerospace companies entering a formal relationship with an automation integrator for an automated assembly line. The research does have general recommendations that are applicable to other industries engaging in similar endeavors. Future work would include a lifecycle study of trust levels within an interorganizational relationship and how they change over the course of the project from conception to delivery.

Abstract:
Introduction Living with HIV has been described as a process of constant adjustment and re-adjustment as the person attempts to create both a good quantity and quality of life (Pierret, 2000). Most of the literature from the counselling psychology community has focused on the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy for this client group however; some of the theory behind this model has been questioned in relation to the needs of the HIV positive community. The current study explored the process between three HIV positive clients and twelve sessions of pluralistic therapy. Method Twelve pluralistic therapy sessions with three HIV positive clients were audio recorded. The participants were recruited from the waiting list of a specialist HIV mental health service in London. Grounded theory strategies were used to analyse the transcriptions of the therapy sessions. Feedback sessions were also conducted with each of the clients in order to gain insight into their experience. The client work and analysis is presented in three pragmatic case studies. Results Goals: These HIV positive clients had specific ‘relational goals’ for therapy. More specifically, the goal was to have the experience of being the ‘expert’ in the room. Tasks: A common theme was ‘self care’ and increasing quality of life. Methods: The therapeutic relationship was found to be a method within the pluralistic framework. A common element for all three clients was the absolute importance placed on ‘creating a shared understanding’ between the client and the therapist.

Abstract:
Despite over 50 years of software engineering as a formal practice, contemporary developers of bespoke software follow development practices that result in low-quality products with high development and maintenance costs. This qualitative case study sought to identify strategies used by software and enterprise architects for applying architectural best practices to improve bespoke software quality and lower the total cost of ownership. The study population was application and enterprise architects associated with delivering bespoke software for the enterprise architecture team at a large enterprise in the Nashville, Tennessee metropolitan area. Interview data were collected from 7 enterprise or solution architects; in addition, 47 organizational documents were gathered. Guided by the principles of total quality management, thematic analysis was used to identify codes and themes related to management of quality in software solutions. Prominent themes included focusing on customer satisfaction, collaborating and communicating with all stakeholders, and defining boundaries and empowering people within those boundaries. The findings from this research have implications for positive social change, including improved work-life balance, morale, and productivity of software and enterprise architects through streamlining development and maintenance activities.

Abstract:
With smart machines taking over each time more tasks, there is a risk of a future without relevant field for human action. In the 19th Century, the Arts and Crafts movement proposed a reaction against the alienation generated by industrial machines. Today, following the spirit of Arts and Crafts, this project intends to pose a reaction against the aesthetics of Artificial Intelligence by embracing human-crafted methods. Furthermore, to tell a complete story of humanizing experiences, the production and use of the vehicle are focused on human interaction; in the first case as a bespoke process and in the second as a vehicle interior that fosters human interaction. With Rolls-Royce Bespoke Design as collaborator for this thesis, the project has been branded after them, taking advantage of the company's hand-crafted approach as a positive value with humanistic potential. The main inspiration consisted of a reinterpretation of traditional artisan methods in order to design a vehicle with novel attributes. In contrast to the common practice of vehicle design where the generation of geometry rules the latter selection of materials and production process, for this project the early inspiration from hand-crafted methods dictated material and form, which could result in limitations during the form finding process, but which could also trigger unexpected results. At the same time, the simulation of the bespoke process with a relevant individual playing the role of the product's user had a major influence on the final outcome. The final result is a vehicle in which the main design focus lies on the interior, although the exterior had to be developed to some extent to provide a frame for development of the inside. The main design contribution is the proposal of structural elements with an aesthetic intention which was dictated by material properties and authenticity. As a story, the project intends to question the increasing presence of Artificial Intelligence and what could be an appropriate scenario for its usage (i.e. autonomous drive algorithms enabling human interaction inside the vehicle). So with the goal of providing humanizing experiences for makers and users of the product, even overlapping the role of makers and users during the bespoke process, the project tells a story of humanization through craftsmanship and dialogue.

Foster, Richard. "Improvement of movement function using bespoke virtual reality based computer games." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2012. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6176/.

Full text
Abstract:
Children with cerebral palsy suffer from primary abnormalities that affect their ability to control movement of body segments. There is evidence that the core (trunk and pelvis) of the body activates prior to the periphery (extremities) during human movement, and so improvement in controlling the core first, then the periphery, could lead to carrying out activities of daily living more effectively. Virtual rehabilitation is developing as a method for the training and assessment of movement function, with evidence suggesting games controlled by the periphery can lead to improvements in activities of daily living, but virtual rehabilitation on the core is scarce. Study One (feasibility study) assessed the changes in gait in response to a six week virtual reality intervention training the core in children with cerebral palsy diplegia (n = 5), using a laboratory based virtual reality system. Improvement in selective motor control of the core occurred after VR training, represented by increased VR game performance (maximum settled speed). Participants showed that single plane trunk movement was better controlled than cross plane trunk movement, trunk rotation was better controlled than trunk tilt, and the trunk was controlled better than the pelvis. Changes in game performance did not transfer to improvements in gait as measured using the Gait Deviation Index. Study Two used a portable virtual reality system in primary schools to train the core and periphery in children with cerebral palsy. A randomised, cross-over design on children with cerebral palsy (n = 8) found that VR game performance improved after receiving VR training, represented by an increase in maximum settled speed and a reduction in variation of pass distance. Single plane movement of the trunk was better controlled than cross plane movement during each assessment, ankle control was better than knee control at each assessment, and control of peripheral segments was better than control of core segments. There were no significant differences in performance of the sit -to-stand movement in response to core training (one week) followed by peripheral training (one week), or when training order was reversed. Overall, Study One and Study Two found no improvements in activities of daily living. Low levels of exposure to virtual reality training, inappropriate outcome measures, in addition to low sample sizes, may have reduced the effect on performance of activities of daily living. Study Two demonstrated that portable virtual reality training is feasible in schools, and can be provided on a daily basis to children with movement difficulties. Overall, the findings provide an important insight into virtual reality training aimed at improving control of the core and periphery in children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the manufacturing process, the production of standardized prefabricated components is highly efficient, which can benefit the demand for mass production of standardized architecture after World War II. However, over-standardized architecture sometimes cannot satisfy the demand for uniqueness in an architecture project. At this time, bespoke components began to be used to solve the over-simplification of aesthetics of architecture. Besides, with the help of digital fabrication, bespoke components could achieve mass customization in architecture. The research designs two joints: prefabricated aluminum joints and bespoke aluminum joints, which aims to develop bespoke joints to aluminum components with ornamental characteristics and become a part of architecture with practical function and ornamental function. Furthermore, in the process of generating bespoke joints, improve the deficiency when conducting lost-foam casting.

Abstract:
We fund research and development across a broad spectrum of areas aimed at improving public health and consumer confidence and developing more flexible approaches to regulation that deliver effective assurance. The intended benefits from our funded research can be hard to measure and attribute, such as new food safety standards which may lead to positive social change. Previous attempts to assess the benefits delivered by our research have met with limited success, and our own review of the literature concluded that none of the published valuation methodologies met our need. This project was commissioned to develop a new bespoke valuation methodology that could be used to inform the prioritisation of future research and development investment.
