Abstract:
The distribution range of the European mole (Talpa europaea) in the studied region has been presented differently in scientific publications that cover over 180 years of investigation. The current understanding of the species range also varies. Based on museum collections, literature data, own observations and personal communication of colleagues, we specify the border of the species range in the south of Right-bank Ukraine (mainly in the steppe zone). Original data were collected in the course of ornithological surveys in 2016–2021. Other data concern records of the species in 1900–2021; 21 records are confirmed by the collected specimens and 5 by photos. In addition, we list the palaeozoological records of the species. The analysis of data demonstrates that T. europaea in the study area (on the border of its range) is distributed unevenly. It is present along river valleys and forests in Bessarabia and in the Danube Delta and its tributaries (Odesa Oblast, Ukraine). Nearby is located a large enclave of the species in interfluve of the Prut and Dnister rivers (Moldova). From the forest-steppe, where the species is common, it penetrates the steppe zone along river valleys: the Southern Bug (Mykolayiv Oblast) and the Ingulets (Kirovohrad Oblast) and their tributaries. This is confirmed by both previous and recent records. Along the Dnipro River, south of Dnipro City, only palaeozoological records of the species are known (only from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast). In Kherson Oblast, no records of the species are known. The analysis of previous and recent finds of the species allows suggesting that T. europaea has been occurring in the study area for long time. The current climatic conditions, however, hinder the further expansion of the species in the region and/or the increase in its population density within the current range. The statement about the wide distribution of the species in the study area, which appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, in our opinion is based on interviewing data and confusion. The word ‘kroty’ (Ukrainian common name of T. europaea in plural) has been used to name not only T. europaea, but also Nannospalax leucodon, Spalax zemni, and Ellobius talpinus. Additional surveys along river valleys and in forest localities are needed for a more detailed description of the T. europaea distribution in the study region.

Abstract:
The XX-th century had a decisive role in shaping the societies of Eastern Europe. In a short period of time several political ideologies influenced the people causing deep woundsand the effects we face even today. The Republic of Moldova, The Ukraine and Romania have all fallen under the influence of the soviet ideology. To impose such a drastic change regarding the way of life, social institutions such as the Church, the family and private propriety, special methods had to be used. The Bolshevik ideology did not have any regard for the price of individual life and did not refrain from using violent methods. According to the main communist ideologues famine, torture, propriety nationalization and killings were justified. The effects of this societal change still affect the region. Romania, The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine must find the understanding for the past and create solutions for the common problems. Abstract:
After the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Moldova accepted a significant number of Ukrainian refugees (over 100,000 people) and expressed support for Kyiv at the diplomatic level. Moldova continues to provide humanitarian support and cooperate to prevent the threat from the PMR. Ukraine's victory in the war will be an important milestone for increasing Kyiv's political role among European countries and further closer cooperation. Ukraine supports the integrity of Moldova and aims to achieve harmonious and friendly relations with it, so it can be assumed that even in the post-war period, the vector of bilateral relations will be aimed at deepening the cooperation of the border territories, both in the economic, cultural and tourist spheres. The nature of cross-border cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova can be assessed as close and multifaceted. Within the framework of the three Euroregions, economic, environmental, cultural, and tourist activities are carried out. The cultural component of cooperation, in general, is quite widely and qualitatively presented at the expense of local diasporas and the openness of both sides for the development of local communities. It is connected with tourist activity, which at the moment is actually impossible due to hostilities, but has broad prospects in the future due to the unity of the ethno-cultural component of Bessarabia, which can be used for further joint development.

Abstract:
The book in question examines the various aspects of the life of Bessarabia during the late 18th – early 20th centuries – “Russian time” in its history – through the eyes of Russian scientists and writers. Their focus was both on the individual events in the life of the Bessarabian multiethnic community and the peculiarities of its religion and culture. The rich factual material revealed a significant social distance between the national Moldavian intelligentsia and the illiterate, mainly rural Moldovan population. The process of forming a qualitatively new composition of the population of Bessarabia by the end of the 19th century is analyzed, which allows us to talk about the development of the multi-ethnic phenomenon of Bessarabism. The beginning of the 20th century is the time of development and strengthening of Moldavian national identity in a Russian cultural space. The authors state: the echoes of that time, as well as subsequent events of the 20th century, continue to influence modern ethno-social processes in the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Eastern Europe as a whole.

Abstract:
In the first half of the last century Bessarabia repeatedly faced mass migration born by political and military cataclysms. In the second decade of our century the refugee problem sharply announced itself in Moldova, making actual the historical experience of helping people who fled from military actions. That’s why the author’s attention is paid to the less studied stage in the history of charity in Bessarabia connected with the refugees from the South regions of Russia and Ukraine during the Civil War of 1918–1921. The article examines the journalists’ comprehension of the social and political phenomenon as the problem of refugees reflected in the Russian language newspapers of Kishinev. There is also studied the activity of some public organizations in the Kingdom of Romania that worked with Russian refugees. The daily press, being the main means of communication, played a leading part in the formation of public opinion to support people who had lost their homeland. Kishinev press reflected the refugee theme both in its chronological development and in the context of the social problems of Bessarabia during those years. The newspaper materials serve as a representative historical source, being evidence of traditions of Christian and public charity in the conditions of the new statehood.

Abstract:
Bolboka, Dmitrovka, Eski Troyan, Kurçu, and Satılık-Hacı are five villages in the southern part of Bessarabia which after the Second World War found themselves within the borders of Ukraine. Not much is known about the history of these places, as even the date of foundation of each of them is not fully clear. Since the time when the Gagauz first settled in this area both the borders and nationality issues have changed. While our knowledge of the Tsarist Russia period is relatively ample, the functioning of these villages in the time of Great Romania and in Soviet times remains poorly studied. After the collapse of the USSR, Southern Budjak was within the borders of Ukraine. In contrast to the Republic of Moldova, the Gagauz population failed to gain autonomy from the state of Ukraine. Conse- quent attempts to incorporate individual cities within the Autonomous Territory of Gagauzia, in the current reality, have very little chance of success.

Abstract:
For more than a century, the Slavonic manuscript and printed book collections have attracted attention of numerous Romanian and foreign specialists in the field of philology, history and other adjacent disciplines. The article presents some key points in the history of research of the old Slavonic book from the Bessarabian public collections. In introduction to this study we considered it appropriate to highlight the efforts of the specialists oriented towards common activity of putting various Slavonic manuscript and printed book collections of our country in the scientific circuit and description. The study is based on the collection of Slavonic books published in Lviv, Ostrog, Vilno, Grodno, Kyiv, kept by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova. In this research, the history and provenance of this collection is traced and some aspects related to their circulation in Bessarabia are explained. The presence in the Bessarabian space of the Slavonic books printed in Ukraine, Russia or Belarus confesses cross-cultural relations that existed between our country and those countries from which they came. Today this treasure is interesting to international Slavists and Byzantinologists, since some of these books are based on the translation of the Greek originals.

Abstract:
This study describes a genealogical movement that manifests itself among the Bulgarian ethnic community in the historical territory of Bujak, currently divided between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The first genealogical work was the pamphlet of the priest Dmitry Chachir from the Bulgarian colony Iserlia – “Biographical sketch of the family Chachir”, published in Chisinau in 1899. In the modern period, genealogical research was of special interest to local historians. In this regard, one of the most famous genealogists is Petar Kairak from the city of Taraklia. In 1992, he published a voluminous biographical work “Olympii Panov”, devoted to this famous Taraklian, who participated in the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire, and then in the construction of the third Bulgarian kingdom. In the mentioned work, a genealogical tree of the Panov family was published for the first time with appropriate explanations and commentary. Later, P. Kairak published a valuable book in two volumes “Genealogical trees of Taraklia” (1999, 2002), also in Russian, which included genealogical trees of the Bulgarian families of this city, reconstructed from the time of their migration to Bessarabia until the end of the 20th century. This work caused a genealogical movement in other places with Bulgarian population in Bujak.

The article analyzes the collecting activities of the Russian Ethnographic Museum employees and amateur local historians of Bessarabia, who have been gathering collections on the Gagauz people ethnography for a century. This fund contains over three hundred material monuments, archival, illustrative and photographic materials on the Gagauz migrants who lived in the territory of Novorossiya (and subsequently in the south of Moldova and in the Odessa Region of Ukraine). Of particular interest is the fact that collecting the materials which characterise the material and spiritual culture of the Gagauz people took place over a long period of time in the same villages. This allows us to trace the dynamics of the development of everyday culture of the Gagauz ethnic group.

Abstract:
Year 2020 was favorable for the critical and essayistic spirit in the Republic of Moldova. The books written in this section offer an overview of current critical thinking, of the most modern perspectives on literature approaching. The concept “arheul marginii”, by Andrei Țurcanu, offers an artistic and sociological grid for evaluating the relationship of the literary margin with the centre, i.e. of Romanian literature on both banks of the Prut, in a social, political and cultural context. The books of Emilian Galaicu Păun and Adrian Ciubotaru address current cultural phenomena (an anthropological vision of death, disease, suffering, etc.), important authors in Romanian and universal literature. Alexandru Burlacu analyses the 60th and 70th creation generations in Bessarabia, Dumitru Apetri – the phenomenon of translations, etc. All together they confirm a viable Bessarabian meta-literary process, connected to the latest Romanian and European literary challenges.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractRussia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022 has not only brought war back to the European continent, it has also created a new urgency for the European Union to allow new members to find economic and strategic protection within its confines. While no accession procedure has been successfully concluded since 2013, the list of candidates is growing. In June 2022, the European Council decided to grant the status of candidate country to both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. This was greeted with great enthusiasm, in particular in Ukraine—which now expects a swift accession in reward for the enormous price it has had to pay for its European choice. The key question this chapter addresses is which dynamics have evolved in this early accession process under the conditions of war, where the EU strives to defend the rule of law and democracy internally and externally simultaneously (in particular because of past experiences of how vulnerable democratic achievements are to recession), while at the same time trying to prove its geopolitical capacities by providing credible accession perspectives. The literature on EU conditionality provides us with helpful insights into factors conducive to the transformation of a candidate country along EU conditions (e.g. clarity, tangibility of rewards, absence of veto-players). This seems to make Ukraine an ideal candidate for successful transformation, as the renewed emphasis of the ‘geopolitical’ EU on enlargement strengthens the credibility of the promise, and a renewed enlargement methodology contributes to clarity and increases (tangible) rewards along the way. Additionally, an active Ukrainian civil society is putting pressure on political elites to continue on their European path. The close linkage of EU accession with reconstruction plans for Ukraine also makes successful EU integration an effective remedy for domestic challenges. We argue, however, that in order to comprehensively understand ‘membership politics’ and the politicisation of EU conditions, it is essential to address the contextual interpretation of the norms posed by the EU as part of its accession conditionality. For this, we combine the concept of conditionality with approaches to norm contestation from International Relations (IR) Research. This induces a shift of perspective from a unidirectional norm-giver/norm-taker perspective, closely assigned to conditionality approaches, towards a focus on the web of interactions between actors on the EU and the Ukrainian side as they engage with, interpret and enact norms based on their social context. By example of the reform of the Ukrainian judiciary (and here in particular the Constitutional Court of Ukraine) we show how the ‘sovereignty argument’ is put forward to challenge the “West’s right to evaluate”. Furthermore, the contestation of time frames is of high salience not only because Ukraine demands a ‘fast track accession’ against the will of some EU Member States, but also because it raises the stakes as to how ‘sufficient progress’ for gaining promised rewards is assessed. It is thus indispensable to conceptualise and address contestation in order to understand the current challenges of turning Ukraine’s candidate status into a meaningful membership perspective under increased geopolitical pressure, and while a war is raging on the EU’s doorstep.

Abstract:
Abstract A large body of literature highlights the importance of structural prerequisites or contextual factors for ensuring democracy’s emergence and survival. These include economic development, macroeconomic performance, state capacity, religious and ethnolinguistic homogeneity, democratic cultures, and the existence of democratic neighbors and international patrons. And yet, history provides numerous examples of democracies that have persisted in the absence of these things. Chapter 1 analyzes the correlates of democratic survival for third-wave democracies and finds that structural factors cannot account for several long-lived democracies that have emerged since the mid-1970s. The “hard” cases of Argentina, Benin, Timor-Leste, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Moldova, Georgia, and Ukraine show that contextual factors may facilitate democracy, but they do not fully determine its endurance. Instead, the introduction and the chapters that follow it illustrate that democratic survival depends on the constraints that important political actors, such as political parties and militaries, face. These constraints may be external, in the form of institutions and the countervailing power of other actors, but in many cases they are internal, in the form of deeply ingrained commitments to democracy that cause actors to prioritize it over other desiderata.

Abstract:
Drought has been posing serious problems for agricultural production in Russia. A well-known Russian scientist, Vavilov (1931), noted that droughts characterize Russian farming. Recently, in some Russian Federation regions, there has been a high probability of severe or extremely severe droughts (Pasechnyuk et al., 1977; ARRIAM, 2000; Kleschenko, 2000; Ulanova and Strashnaya, 2000; Zoidze and Khomyakova, 2000; table 15.1). Numerous definitions of drought are available in the Russian literature (Bova, 1946; Alpatiev and Ivanova, 1958; David, 1965; Kalinin, 1981; Polevoy, 1992; Khomyakova and Zoidze, 2001). However, Kleschenko (2000) noted that all definitions are similar. Droughts are most frequently observed in Russia (Povolzhie, North Caucasus, Central-Chernozem regions, Ural, West and East Siberia) as well as in other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries: Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, and Armenia. The Povolzhie, North-Caucasus, and Central-Chernozem regions contribute significantly to the Russian economy because these regions have fertile chernozems soils and produce most (about two-thirds) of the food grains—wheat and rye during the winter season and wheat, maize, and barley during the spring season. In recent moisture-favorable or nondrought years (1978, 1990 and 2001), the total grain production was 130 million tons, while during drought years (1975, 1981, 1995 and 1998), the production declined by half (Ulanova and Strashnaya, 2000). Decline in food grain yields was observed from 1917 to 1990 in the former USSR, and since 1990 in the post-Soviet Russia. Rudenko (1958) reported that Ukraine experienced severe droughts during 1875, 1889, 1918, and 1921, when the spring wheat yield was 70% of the mean yield. A sudden depression in the winter rye yield was observed in Povolzhie region during severe droughts of 1890, 1898, and 1911, when the yield was less than 60%, and during 1906, when the yield was only 25% of the mean yield. During severe droughts in Russia during 1972, 1975, 1979, 1984, and 1995, the crop yield deviated by an average of 17–42% in Russia as a whole, up to 19–91% in the Central-Chernozem regions, up to 45–100% in Povolzhie region, 27–36% in the North-Caucasus region, and 21–100% in the Ural region.

Abstract:
The first translations of Romanian literature appeared in the Czech language at the end of the 19th century, but authors from the territory of Bessarabia began to be translated only from the 70s – the work of the writer Ion Druță, translated through the Russian language. At the end of the 80s, translations from authors such as Vladimir Beșleagă and Vasile Vasilache appeared. After a break of more than ten years, literature from the Republic of Moldova is being translated again, especially thanks to the efforts of translator Jiří Našinec. In this approach we will refer to an article-synthesis „Folklore ‒ a factor of preservation of national consciousness” signed by Sergiu Moraru with reference to the awareness of folklorists in Bessarabia of the urgent need to safeguard the elements of traditional culture of Romanians in Moldova , Ukraine (Odessa region, Chernivtsi, Nikolaev, Kirovohrad), Russian Federation (Krasnodar region) in the postwar period. We will also reflect on the development of folklore research by establishing scientific criteria for investigating and publishing field-recorded folklore materials, with the necessary parallels on the emergence of the first collections of cultural memory samples in general Romanian folklore.

Abstract:
In the present paper, the author refers to the importance of applying measures to safeguard the cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Bessarabia, to the good practices achieved in this field, as well as to the advantages and disadvantages of information technology on capitalizing cultural memory artifacts. Digitization has been a priority for cultural heritage institutions around the world for more than 15 years. Lately, this technological process has also become an opportunity for the „Itzik Mangher” Jewish Library. The impact is major as since the last decade of the previous century, this institution has been meant to gather and preserve the cultural memory of the Jewish people living on the territory of the Republic of Moldova; to educate the younger generation in the spirit of forming a clear vision of the historical and literary heritage of the Jews within the general history of this European region; to permanently develop the museum collections of the library and to set up a Museum-Cognitive Bibliological Complex of Literature and Culture of the Jews of Moldova.

The data on black fly fauna in Moldova are absent in the old and modern literature. Overall, 45 black fly species from the genera Prosimulium (four species) and Simulium (41 species) are common both for Romania and Ukraine and expected to be present in Moldova. For the first time cross-sectional entomological survey was conducted in 2018 to detect the breeding sites of Simuliidae in Moldova. Productive breeding sites of black flies were identified in the creek close to the Dniester River section located in Vascauti village, Racovat River sections located in Branzeni and Burlanesti villages. Immature stages of black flies also have been found in the small creeks in Chisinau and Duruitoarea Veche.

Quak, Evert-jan. Russia’s Approach to Civilians in the Territories it Controls. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), March 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.041.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review synthesises the literature from academic sources, knowledge institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and trusted independent media outlets on the approach used by the Russian government to provide any support or services to civilians in the territories it controls. The rapid review concludes that Russia provides economic, social, government, and military support to de facto states that it controls, such as Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria and the Donbas region. Russia covers large parts of the state’s budget of these separatist regions. This review uses the term aid referring to a wide range of support, such as humanitarian, social safety nets, basic services, infrastructure, state development, and security. Due to the lack of transparency on the Russian aid money that flows into the regions that are the subject of this review, it is impossible to show disaggregated data, but rather a broader overview of Russian aid to these regions. Russia used humanitarian aid and assistance to provide for civilians. During armed conflict it provided, to some extent, food, and medicines to the people. However, from the literature Russia has used humanitarian aid and assistance as an instrument to pursue broader policy goals that could not be defined as humanitarian in nature. Russia often relied on the language of humanitarianism to strengthen its credentials as a neutral and impartial actor and to justify its continued support for the residents and de facto authorities of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transnistria, to secure its aim to strengthen the political and social ties with these regions while weakening their allegiance to Georgia and Moldova. As the humanitarian activities to the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine demonstrate, the Russian state is not willing to allow scrutiny of their humanitarian aid by independent organisations. Mistrust, corruption, and the use of aid for propaganda, even smuggling arms into the separatist region, are commonly mentioned by trusted sources. After a conflict becomes more stabilised, Russia’s humanitarian aid becomes more of a long-term strategic “friendship”, often sealed in a treaty to integrate the region into the Russian sphere, such as the cases of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Transnistria clearly show. Although all these separatist regions rely on Russia (economically, politically, and through Russia’s military presence), this does not mean that they always do exactly what Russia wants, which is particularly the case for Abkhazia and Transnistria.
