Abstract:

This essay explores Eugenio María de Hostos’s and Ramón E. Betances’s notions of modern subjectivities, in the context of Romantic narratives, to index the fractures of collective and communal nationalist imaginaries within the Caribbean Confederation. Hostos and Betances were champions of the Antillean Confederation’s idea, but one must wonder why two modern political thinkers recur to the representation of unsuccessful heroes in their fictional texts. Through literary rhetoric, Betances and Hostos proposed a modern subjectivity that could promote national unity and collective political solidarities. Yet, surprisingly, their literary characters are instead inserted in a discourse that verges on a rhetoric of failure that contradicts the positive modern impulse of national/regional constructions.

Abstract:

This essay examines the aesthetics and politics of one of the key figures in the emergence of the Caribbean anti-imperial imaginary in the nineteenth century: the Afro–Puerto Rican activist Ramón Emeterio Betances (1827–98). Through a critical interpretation of Les deux Indiens (1857), a romantic novella about the conquest of Puerto Rico, and “A Cuba Libre” (1871), a biographical essay about Haiti’s first president, Alexandre Pétion, the author explores Betances’s vision of Caribbean unity and its connections to race, gender, republicanism, and decolonization.

Abstract:

La investigación registra una de las vertientes más tempranas del pensamiento antillanista de Ramón Emeterio Betances, uno de sus fundadores que data de 1869. Intenta describir y demostrar cómo el contexto conservador del gobierno venezolano de entonces, contribuyó de manera inmediata y directa a la autoconstrucción progresiva y expansiva del pensamiento antillanista en sus momentos fundacionales. Ante la coyuntura prevista por Betances de que su estadía en Caracas, (como parte de su exilio flotante), sirviera para ayudar a Luperón contra Báez, el patriota boricua incorpora los fundamentos geopolíticos del pensamiento unificador, antillano y caribeño del Libertador, Simón Bolívar, expuestos en la Carta de Jamaica como referente a sus propósitos antillanistas frente al conservadurismo político producto del monagato en la capital venezolana. Con ello, Betances otorga a su pensamiento antillanista un ascenso cualitativo y una conciencia y dimensión de contexto aún mán internacional, en momentos en que dicho pensamiento se construía desde dos estímulos convergentes: el laborantismo anti-español en Cuba y la amenaza expansionista nortemaericana. Ejemplo este de Betances, radicalmente coyuntural, en donde retos amenzadores de este particular contexto en la cuenca caribeña, detemrinan el contenido del discurso antillanista en ésta, su etapa precursora.

Abstract:

Esta ponencia examina las ideas y actividades de los tres como parte de un proceso de construcción de identidades y de imaginarios de integración. Así, las ideas y proyectos de estas figuras -y de otros políticos e intelectuales de su época no se asumen como pre-existentes y aceptadas, sino que se examinan en el proceso mismo de su construcción. Se argumenta, de hecho, que los proyectos para una confederación de las Antillas se articularon para viabilizar las independencias de Cuba y Puerto Rico, y para defender las de Haití y la República Dominicana, frente a todos los imperios. Casi todos los proyectos coincidieron también estimulados por la gran rivalidad contra Estados Unidos en Francia y España en la promoción del latinoamericanismo para intentar conseguir apoyo regional para sus luchas antillanistas, basada en la amenaza a todos de parte del coloso del norte . Persiste, sin embargo, cierta tendencia a asumir el antillanismo y el latinoamericanismo en Betances, Hostos y Martí, por ejemplo, como dimensiones de un solo ideario, además relativamente generalizado y aceptado en la época. La ponencia identifica en los mismos, sin embargo, imaginarios a menudo contradictorios y en muchos sentidos más precursores. Tanto más si hablamos de latinoamericanismo. A pesar de la noción que todavia prevalece, mientras que Betance y Hostos adoptaron la identidad latinoamericana aunque de distintas manera, Martí parece haber sido más nuestroamericano que latinoamericano y él y Hostos más americanistas que Betances.

Los vinculos con el mundo de Quisqueya serán examinados a la luz de un conjunto de documentos inéditos que desde 1920 se encuentran en manos privadas. Se trata de un valioso libro copiador de cartas con los hombres de gobierno de la República Dominicana. Sobresalen, entre otras, las misivas del doctor Betances dirigidas a Gregorio Luperón, Fernando Arturo de Meriño, Ulises Heureaux y Eugenio Generoso de Marchena.

RESUMO É objetivo deste artigo discutir o antiescravismo no Caribe espanhol através da atuação do cubano Antonio Maceo (1845-1896) e do porto-riquenho Ramón Emeterio Betances (1827-1898). A pesquisa busca reconstituir o ambiente político do Caribe espanhol no período de 1863 a 1881, no contexto de guerras de independência, e o protagonismo específico de homens negros que reivindicaram solidariedade racial na luta pela abolição da escravidão. A partir de algumas correspondências e documentos produzidos por Maceo e Betances (ou com sua participação), e da documentação gerada pelas autoridades coloniais, serão discutidas a construção de redes e conexões transnacionais, com base racial, pelos ativistas que lutavam contra a escravidão e as discriminações e por direitos políticos integrais. Chamo especial atenção para a interlocução com os haitianos e para a insistente referência ao Haiti no vocabulário político daqueles ativistas.

Abstract:

Con el propósito de apreciar críticamente aspectos del proceso revolucionario del Caribe insular del siglo xix, en este artículo se abordan textos de Ramón Emeterio Betances (1827-1898) y Joseph-Anténor Firmin (1850-1911), quienes dialogan con las ideas imperantes en su época respecto del sentido de la historia, de las relaciones de reconocimiento y subordinación, de la diversidad de las razas. La exposición se organiza en tres momentos: en el primero se examina la construcción europea y moderna de la noción de “historia universal” y del lugar que ocupa el concepto de “raza”; en el segundo, la práctica de relatar “historias singulares”, tal como surge de la pluma de Betances; en el tercero, la respuesta disruptiva de Firmin, quien cuestiona la tesis de Gobineau sobre la desigualdad de las razas, e introduce un criterio de interpretación histórica que anticipa la noción de “acontecimiento”.

El presidente Cleveland y el secretario de estado Blaine ofrecieron los buenos oficios de Estados U nidos; Alfaro, presidente de Ecuador, y Ulises Hereaux (presidente de la República Dominicana) presentaron propuestas para conseguir la paz, respetando los derechos de todos y sin humillar la dignidad de las partes; Betances, en París, participó en negociaciones no oficiales. Fracasaron todos: pues para los cubanos no era negociable la independencia, ni para España la soberanía.

Abstract:

In a preliminary study of the marine benthos of Ría de Ares-Betanzos, 50 stations covering the quadrant delineated by the coordinates 43°26′42″N–43°20′42″N and 08°18′54″W–08°10′12″W were sampled and sediment samples analysed for particle-size composition, sand, silt and clay content, degree of sorting, median diameter and grain-size diversity of sediments. Organic and inorganic content, total carbon and nitrogen, carbonates, organic carbon/total nitrogen ratio and bathymetric data were also collected. On a smaller scale a few stations were sampled for sediment redox potential and pH measurement. The salinity, temperature and oxygen content of the overlying water was also assessed.Cluster analysis and Principal Component Analysis methods were used to describe seabed heterogeneity and the pattern of sediment distribution within the ría, and to relate the environmental variables to each sediment type. Sediments were predominantly fine to very fine sands, and exhibited a direct depth-related gradient, i.e. with the finer grades, higher organic carbon and silt and clay occurring at the shallower areas of Pontedeume, Ares and Redes inlets and Ría de Betanzos sector where terrigenous input was important. Carbonate, organic carbon and organic matter maxima occurred in the central sector of the ría where most mollusc recruitment takes place: revealing the chiefly bioclastic origin of sediments. Taking into account the geological and hydrographic processes, explanations for the formation of the sedimentary bottoms in Ría de Ares-Betanzos are provided.

Abstract This article draws the linguistic profile of a sixteenth century Colonial translator in the Andes, Juan Díez de Betanzos. This profile covers his linguistic background, and the knowledge of the languages he was in contact with when overseas. The identification and analysis of his translation techniques and strategies form the core of the article. What appears then is the image of the cultural translator of the times, a translator who was also a colonizer, and thus, a linguistic agent of colonization.

Trachinocephalus gauguini Polanco, Acero & Betancur, 2016 was described based on eighteen specimens collected from off the Marquesas Islands, the only location where this species has been recorded until now. Through morphological and molecular examination of Trachinocephalus specimens collected from an exploratory cruise conducted in June 2014 under the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos program along the northern coast of the New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, we demonstrate the presence of this species in Papua New Guinea waters. This new record suggests a wide distribution for this rarely collected species in the western Pacific Ocean.

Carcass composition in reindeer is affected by feed intake and the age and sex of the animal. Studies have also shown that age, sex, carcass trim fat content and total intramuscular fat content (IMF) influence lipid class composition. The aim of this study was to compare lipid class composition and IMF in relation to carcass weight, conformation and trim fat content, and to investigate how these parameters are affected by age, sex and different feed sources. Five groups of reindeer were studied. Two groups of calves were fed two grain-based pelleted feeds with different lipid compositions for approximately two months before slaughter. One of these groups was fed with conventional pellets, and the other with pellets enriched with linseed cake to increase the amount of n-3 fatty acids in the diet. Three groups of grazing reindeer were also included in the study, consisting of adult males, adult females or calves. Reindeer calves fed pellets had higher slaughter weights, higher trim fat content and better carcass conformation scores compared to the grazing calves. However, there was no significant difference in IMF between pellet-fed and grazing calves. Adult female reindeer had the highest and grazing calves the lowest slaughter weights, trim fat and IMF. There was no difference in lipid class composition in meat from calves fed with the two pelleted feeds, whereas grazing calves had a higher amount of phospholipids. Squalene was identified and quantified as a component of intramuscular lipids in reindeer meat. Syftet med denna studie var att jämföra lipidklassammansättningen och IMF i relation till slaktkroppens vikt, form och mängden putsfett och att undersöka hur dessa parametrar påverkas av renarnas kön, ålder och olika typer av foder (bete och pellets). Fem grupper renar ingick i studien (totalt 38 djur). Två grupper kalvar utfodrades med två sorters pellets med olika fettsammansättning under två månader före slakt. Den ena gruppen fick normala pellets (CPD) (Renfor Bas) medan den andra gruppen fick pellets som hade en tillsats av linfrökaka (LPD) för att öka mängden n-3 fettsyror i fodret. Dessutom ingick tre grupper betesdjur i studien: vajor, sarvar och kalvar. Utfodring med pellets gav slaktkroppar med bättre klassning, högre slaktvikter och mer putsfett jämfört med slaktkroppar från betande kalvar. Vajorna hade de högsta och betande kalvar de lägsta slaktvikterna, minst putsfett och lägst halt av IMF. Utfodringen med pellets gav ingen signifikant skillnad i IMF mellan betande och utfodrade renkalvar. Vi fann ingen skillnad i lipidklassammansättning mellan de två utfodrade kalvgrupperna, men köttet från de betande kalvarna hade en högre halt av fosfolipider. Vi kunde också identifiera och kvantifiera squalen som en komponent i intramuskulärt fett i renkött.

His study suggests that there were significant differences in the accounts of past wars, royal lineages and marriages that relate to political partitions.
