Abstract:
A high seed vigour is a desired trait in agronomy as it promotes the fast field emergence and homogeneity of harvest, which is necessary for producing quality food raw material. In this work, we studied the effects of the seed vigour on the bread quality. Relationships between the grain vigour, nutrients and anti-nutrients, contents, and bread volume were evaluated using the samples acquired from official variety trials. In the trials, the grain vigour was perceived as the grain ability to germinate in stress conditions, i.e. at 10°C in a solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000 at osmotic pressure – 2 bars, the so called permanent wilting point). The results showed that the locations and years changed the bread volume but not the rank of the varieties tested in the trait. A higher grain vigour was significantly related to a higher falling number during two of the three trial years. The vigour was negatively related to the lipase activity. Moreover, other decomposing enzymes showed a similar tendency as was that found in the samples with the most diverse vigour. The grain samples with 80–90% vigour produced the greatest bread volume. The grain with a vigour below or above this range produced less voluminous loaves. The varieties of the highest quality produced the most voluminous bread from the samples reaching the grain vigour of 90–95%. The standard germination test was not related to the vigour and was less responsible for the bread quality. High-quality varieties had higher contents of total polyphenols than the varieties of lower quality, and the polyphenol content was correlated with the vigour (<i>r</i2 = 0.19**) and bread volume (<i>r</i2 = 0.08*). It can be concluded that the grain vigour is genetically controlled, thus the bread quality could be improved by grain breeding.

Abstract:

Better Health is an organization focused on improving patient care and healthcare outcomes through health care quality improvement methods to provide better services at lower cost. With the average cost of a surgical site infection(SSI) estimated at around $34,400 and the average of 1 in 25 patients in a US acute care hospital having a healthcare-associated infection (HAI), improving patient safety and reducing costs are paramount. This business plan will detail reasons for the need for these services, and will do this by working alongside departments in hospitals to help them reduce their rates of HAI’s and improve their care processes through retraining and education. With improvements such as these, hospitals can not only reduce their costs and increase their profits, but also play a part in reducing the financial burden the American healthcare system is currently under.

Abstract:
My thesis project, Better Alone focuses on single person households from a perspective of loneliness. The objective has been to find an architectural solution to decrease experienced loneliness. In this project I intend to address the issue and design a way of living that can relieve the experience of involuntary loneliness. I have used two main strategies: the first is to provide space for social interaction in connection to the home and to create reasons to enter and linger in these spaces. The second main strategy is to blur or stretch the border that separates the home into privacy through visibility. The project's site is  in southern Stockholm, in between the neighborhoods Hammarbyhöjden and Hammarby sjöstad, a fairly central location. The site's most prominent characteristic is the fact that it is a steep slope. At the bottom of the slope runs Hammarbyvägen, which is a fairly busy road. Together these two aspects create a barrier between the neighborhoods of Hammarby sjöstad and Hammarbyhöjden, these are challenges that I have addressed in the project.

Ginsberg, Alexandra Daisy. "Better : navigating imaginaries in design and synthetic biology to question 'better'." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2018. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/3231/.

Abstract:
Designers, engineers, marketers, politicians, and scientists all craft motivating visions of better futures. In some of these, “better” will be delivered by science and technology; in others, the consumption of designed things will better us or the world. “Better” has become a contemporary version of progress, shed of some of its philosophical baggage. But better is not a universal good or a verified measure: it is imbued with politics and values. And better will not be delivered equally, if at all. “What is better?”, “Whose better?”, and “Who decides?” are questions with great implications for the way we live and hope to live. At a time when social, economic, and environmental conditions place in question the dominant paradigms of better defined by globalisation and technology, Better, a PhD by project, investigates some of the powerful dreams triggered by a banal word and develops critical design techniques to find new ways to ask better questions. This thesis contends that the “dream of better” is so influential in advanced technological societies that it is what science and technology studies scholars term a sociotechnical imaginary. The imaginary is used as a critical design tool to examine better, revealing links between design and the emerging technoscience of synthetic biology and other ideological spaces, like Silicon Valley. As a young field, synthetic biology offers a space to test and expand critical design’s potential. The practical research includes six critical design projects that engage with synthetic biology and its vision-making processes, using techniques from designed fictions to curation. The written thesis comprises six chapters informed throughout by commentary on the practice. The first chapter looks at the influence of dominant concepts of better on design, separating design’s intrinsic optimism from engineering and market-led ideas of the optimum and optimisation. It situates critical design practice as an optimistic activity, seeking alternative meanings of better. The next three chapters track how the imaginary of better has shaped synthetic biology and the field’s evolving culture of design. Meanings of better have proliferated since 1999, as synthetic biology’s visionaries promise to better biology, better the world, and even to better nature itself. But resistance has revealed the existence of alternative betters. Chapter Five explores critical design’s examination of synthetic biology’s dreams of betters. Recognising the mutual colonisation of critical design and synthetic biology, which is contributing to the emerging platform of biodesign, the chapter discusses how navigating imaginaries can improve future critical practice. It encourages framing technoscience within society, rather than placing society downstream of it. Chapter Six proposes that the social imaginary itself can be a critical design object. Designing “critical imaginaries” can open up our understanding of better, offering a process to reimagine the world. The critical imaginary is not a utopian effort to produce prescriptive visions of how the world ought to be. It is a heterotopian design technique to include diverse views and generate worlds that could be made, asking “what ought the world to be?”

Abstract:
The requirements on vehicle industry are constantly getting stricter, especially when it comes to emissions. At the same time cars, trucks and buses are needed for our way of living. This have forced companies to be as ecient as possible in their way of using fossil fuels for travelling and transport. To increase the eciency companies investigate all possible fuel savings to decrease their carbon footprint as much as possible. One area of savings that is not that obvious to many people is the alternator. Several percent of the total energy used by a vehicle are needed to operate the alternator. With a typical alternator eciency of 70% considerable savings can be achieved. This thesis that concern alternator eciency was carried out at Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. The goal of the thesis is to construct a mathematical model of an alternator. The model is supposed to consider all losses in the alternator and together with the output power give an eciency model of the alternator at different speeds and loads. A great part of the project has been dealing with the magnetic losses. The magnetic losses have been modeled as an equivalent circuit with the load angle as a central piece. The equivalent circuit is built up by the fact that the alternator used in the vehicles is a salient pole alternator. The equivalent circuit describes a voltage equation where the voltage drop over the magnetic inductance is described. From that relations between the signals in the alternator and output signals can be written. The alternator model is then used together with data recorded from different buses all over the world, this to be able to investigate how the alternator contributes to the fuel consump- tion depending on the way that the buses are driven. The result of this thesis is a mathematical model that describes the losses in the alternator for different load cases and speeds.

Abstract:
The global financial crisis had devastating effects on the financial system, economic growth and national debt of Western countries. The focus of this thesis is an examination of certain identifiable weaknesses in the corporate governance at UK banks which, it is posited, constituted an underlying cause of the crisis. It then considers the main regulatory responses to these identified weaknesses and assesses to what extent these have led to improvements in corporate governance at banks. This research is based on an examination of all the major failures at UK banks during and after the crisis, and of its related responses. In addition to UK responses, several solutions to the weaknesses identified at UK banks are also currently addressed through EU legislation and by the international Basel Committee. These are also reviewed. The principal conclusions are that: board effectiveness was low due to a lack of knowledge and of challenging of senior management; there was a culture placing growth and profit over risk management; and remuneration was inappropriately structured leading to unacceptable risk taking and scandals. It is further concluded that the mechanisms to limit the impact of a failure of a bank on its stakeholders, such as depositors and the taxpayer, were inadequate. A comparative case study of the financial crisis in Japan during the 1990s is also undertaken to consider whether, and to what extent, the Japanese regulatory response offers lessons to UK regulators and legislators. The principal finding is that comparative analysis of regulation and corporate governance at banks is problematic. Although there were similarities between the two financial crises and their impacts, the organisation and culture of the UK and Japanese banks is so different that different regulatory responses follow. Despite similarities in financial crises, different regulatory responses are more likely due to distinctive national contexts.
