The Return Home : Mongo Beti's Late OeuvreIn 1991 amid the wave of democracy sweeping Africa, Mongo Beti returned to his native country of Cameroon to continue his literary career after 32 years of exile in France. My dissertation investigates the originality of his homecoming discourse. I explore how this prominent writer's late oeuvre illustrates his struggle to re-discover the country he left decades earlier as well as how his experience of returning shaped a new literary perception. His work after returning home reflects his gradual re-acquaintance with and re-integration into his native country. I argue that at the outset, his perception is initially guided by a backward glance on the past and that his assessment of the present aims at resisting pessimistic representations of Africa. In his later works, however, one cannot but notice the same sentiments of dissatisfaction and disillusion that were based on his first hand experience. To this extent, Mongo Beti's post-return literature can be considered dynamic as it evolved over time. A diachronic approach allowed me to examine his changing perceptions and representations of Africa based on the magnitude of his comprehension of his environment at each point in time. His post-return writing demonstrates a progressive redefinition of some of his previous narrative techniques as regards such elements as political resistance, authoritative narrators, linear unfolding of the plot, time and space, and character development. My analysis also questions the concept of "home" as a place of safety and refuge just as his post-return novels portray exile as an ambiguous state of being in-between worlds, as an expression of a simultaneous connection to the "new old" home and the distant former one abroad. Therefore, there is a shift in Mongo Beti's post-return discourse away from questions of national responsibility and social progress rooted in a consciousness of belonging to a defined community. The conceptual organization of my dissertation is derived from my reading of each of the four texts of the post-return era, and the way they illustrate the author's process of re-discovery of postcolonial Cameroon.

Depuis ville cruelle, son premier texte publié en 1954 jusqu'à la revanche de guillaume ismael dzewatama, derniere oeuvre en date (1984), Mongo Beti s'est toujours assigné la meme tâche : révéler, par l'entremise de la fiction romanesque, les malheurs qui accablent le continent africain. La colonisation, loin d'être une entreprise philanthropique, général, selon l'auteur camerounais, une societe inégalitaire au sein de laquelle blancs et noirs n'avaient ni les mêmes droits, ni les mêmes devoirs. L'avènement de l'indépendance ne fut, à en croire Mongo Beti, qu'une immense duperie : au colonisateur européen succédait un potentat africain dont la principale mission consistait a perpetuer, grace a la repression armee et policiere, une situation sociale favorable a une poignee de privilegies. L'epoque contemporaine se caracterise par la domination politique, économique et culturel du nord développé et industrialisé sur le sud, victime non seulement de l'échange inégal, mais aussi de ses propres tares que Mongo Beti ne se fait pas faute de denoncer : absence de démocratie, gabegie, corruption, incompétence. . . Une double dynamique traverse l'œuvre de Mongo Beti, et ce dès 1953 et ses débuts en littérature : en premier lieu, un engagement inflexible, intransigeant, que l'écrivain brandit comme un signe identificateur de son esthétique romanesque et de son action citoyenne. En second lieu, un courant d'échanges souvent fructueux s'instaure entre " prose latérale " (écrits journalistiques et politiques, essais, pamphlets) et production fictionnelle. Autant dire que l'homme et l'œuvre, pour reprendre une formule désuète, sont indissociablement liés et que les combats de l'un trouve toujours un écho et une transposition, plus ou moins distanciée selon les périodes, dans l'autre. Dans le sillage de Sartre et fidèle en cela à la volonté affichée par les promoteurs de la revue Les Temps modernes, Beti refuse le silence du clerc. Et si trahison il y a, elle se niche, selon lui, dans le refus obstiné de dire l'injustice criante et les manquements aux droits de l'homme. C'est cette ligne de conduite idéologique et scripturaire qui unit tous les ouvrages de Mongo Beti, de la " chronique coloniale " aux " romans d'un retour au pays natal " que ce travail souhaite mettre en évidence, tout en s'interrogeant sur les limites et les tensions qu'engendre une telle posture. Mais, parce qu'il n'est pas un propagandiste appointé mettant son œuvre au service d'une cause qui la transcenderait, Beti évite le piège du roman à thèse - même si certains textes, ceux du " cycle Dzewatama " en particulier, témoignent d'un didactisme pesant - et livre une œuvre qui est avant tout le témoignage passionné et ironique sur plus de soixante-dix ans de l'histoire, souvent douloureuse et tragique, parfois drolatique, de l'Afrique.

La "situation familiale et parentale dans l'oeuvre de mongo beti", sujet d'une these de troisieme cycle, constitue une image plus ou moins parfaite de la famille africaine. Celle-ci est restreinte ou etendue, faste et nefaste. Les relations entre les differents membres qui la composent, sont souvent le moment d'une veritable deification. Mais il n'y a d'harmonie reelle qu'autant que dans leurs choix conjugaux, materiels, intellectuels, les cadets en referent toujours aux aines. Ainsi, des que les premiers cessent d'obeir aux secondes, un hiatus se produit qui evoque le classique conflit de generations, s'apparente au complexe d'oedipe et compromet la permanence meme de l'heritage ancestral. En effet, etant donne l'evolution des mentalites, la tradition apparait comme de plus en plus controversee. Certains veulent qu'elle demeure authentique, fidele a elle-meme et eloignee des influences du modernisme. Ils y voient donc un moyen d'affirmer leur specificite au monde. En revanche, d'autres exigent qu'elle s'emancipe de son pouvoir inhibant, libere la femme, s'accommode de cette evolution, accepte les apports positifs d'autres societes; tout en legitimant les siens propres. Litt. , gives almost true image of the african family. The latter is small or large, beneficent or harmful. The relations among its different members give often occasion to witness a real deification. The perfect harmony depends on young people's respect for their elders' principles as for marriage, decisions in material and intellectual matters. When young people refuse to obey the elders, a generation-gap is created, the classical conflict among generations, similar to the oedipus complex that jeopardizes the very permanence of the ancestral heritage. Taking into account the evolution in mentalities, tradition is indeed more and more debated. Some want tradition should be free from its inhibiting power, should liberate woman, should comply with the progress, should accept the beneficial contributions of other societies, but it should legitimize its own values. Mongo Beti, whose real name is Alexander Siyidi Awala, was only 22 years old when he developed his own concept of "freedom". His ideas became public by way of his contribution to the African journal Présence Africaine, published in Paris in the 1950s. Mongo Beti is of the opinion that Africans could enjoy freedom only once independent of their colonial masters. According to Mongo Beti, the colonial masters exploited Africans economically, dominated them politically, and alienated them generally. This work is an analysis of "the quest of freedom by Mongo Beti, an african writer". As regards the approach taken in this work, I will not be following the prevailing mode wherein the author is divorced from his work; rather, I will focus on Mongo Beti as a writer and as an activist. I believe that the knowledge of the life details of an artist can only enrich one's comprehension of his work. The dissertation comprises three parts. The first part focuses on Mongo Beti as a writer and dissident; on his militancy in various organisations such as Amnesty International. It also considers censorship of his works. The second part is a study of Beti's Journal Peuples Noirs - Peuples Africains (PN-PA), a radical Journal with readership and contributors in both France and Africa. PN-PA, owing to its ideological stance, proved a source of irritation to powerful Western nations like France and United States of America. Journals have, traditionally, not been the subject of study in their own right; rather, they were considered a platform for expressing opinions. In this work, I make an attempt to treat PN-PA as an object of study in its own right. The approach is a sociological one. It will enable me to clarify the position of the novelist. The third part of the dissertation analyses Mongo Beti's ten novels, published between 1954 and 1994. The major themes of the novels, namely: the role of missionaries during the colonial period; the conflict between Western and African cultures; analysis of the "myth of Ruben"; and the criticism of dictatorships, are covered in four chapters. It is further argued in part three that there is a clear connection between Beti's writings and the social and political destiny of Africa. The various themes from his works can be divided into four periods: colonial; postcolonial; "the Guillaume" series of novels, and lastly the novel L'Histoire du fou, which indicates a new tendency. The concluding part of the dissertation examines the question of the Institution of African literature, with Beti as a case study. The expression "'Institution of African literature" includes, amongst others, situations whereby African writers are compelled to publish their works outside their native lands, or to rely on foreigners for resources to get their works published. It is argued that such dependence has a marked impact on, among others, the content and accessibility of works by African writers. By focusing on Mongo Beti as an example, it is shown that the activist and the writer are brought together when the question of the Institution of African literature is raised. It is not the purpose of this work to render an apology for Mongo Beti, or to equate him with Francophone Africa or Africa; rather, Beti is merely a case study: an example to illustrate the quest for freedom.

L’étude porte sur le rapport entre la littérature et l’histoire, plus précisément sur la récupération de l’histoire en littérature. En effet, au regard de certaines fictions on constate que le fait historique vient nourrir le contenu des textes. En d’autres termes, le fait historique devient un réservoir dans lequel les écrivains vont puiser la matière de leurs œuvres. Toutefois si on s’accorde sur le principe que le texte littéraire puise dans l’histoire, il est évident que la matière historique peut être exploitée à des fins diverses. Ainsi on peut s’interroger sur les motivations des auteurs qui puisent dans le passé.On rapportera cette problématique à deux écrivains africains : Mongo Beti et Patrice Nganang. On s’interrogera sur les effets escomptés par ces auteurs qui ont recours à l’histoire. L’exploration du passé, qui leur permet de se positionner, est un prétexte, un moyen pour eux de se forger une nouvelle conscience. Indeed, under certain fictions shows that the historical fact comes to feed the contents of the texts. In other words, the historical fact is a reservoir in which writers will draw material from their works. However if there is agreement on the principle that the literary text draws from history, it is clear that the historical material can be exploited for various purposes. So one wonders about the motives of the authors that tap into the past.We bring this issue to two African writers: Mongo Beti and Patrice Nganang. We will discuss the expected effects by these authors that use history. The exploration of the past, enabling them to position itself, is a pretext, a way for them to forge a new consciousness. This dissertation focuses on the works of two well-known African Francophone novelists, Ahmadou Kourouma from the Ivory Coast and Mongo Beti from Cameroon. The objective of this study is to look at the influences of African oral traditions and analyze the literary transposition of semantic structures from African languages and cultures into the French language. I utilize Chantal Zabus' explanations of how the process of indigenization leads to relexification, the process by which the authors seek to display their linguistic innovation by attempting to merge their local African languages with the French language. Chapter one introduces the language policies in the Ivory Coast and Cameroon during the colonization and in the post-colonial Africa. It establishes the relationship between the dominant European languages and the local African languages and examines the question of rehabilitation of the African languages. Chapter two examines the impact of the African oral traditions and the use of orality as a writing strategy. Chapter three aims to analyze the process whereby words of African local languages and cultures are semantically incorporated through Les Soleils des Indépendances (1968) and Allah n'est pas oblige (2000) by Ahmadou Kourouma, and Ville cruelle (1954) and Branle-bas en noir et blanc (2000) by Mongo Beti. Chapter four examines the use of stylistic features associated with local African languages by comparing the earlier works of the two authors with their later literary production in order to establish whether there is continuity or not in their writing style.

Autour de la question de l’Autre (caractérisé par plusieurs figures) et de la problématique de l’image se dévoilent une vision du monde et un regard chargés de sens qui sont sources d’enjeux multiples dans lesquels interfèrent différents facteurs. Dans une analyse comparée des oeuvres de Mongo Beti, Joseph Zobel et Toni Morrison il est question de voir en quoi, audelà de l’identité des origines (l’Afrique berceau de leurs ancêtres communs) et des différences dues à leurs contextes respectifs, ces trois romanciers entretiendraient des similitudes (lesquelles ?) et/ou des spécificités (pourquoi ?). Cinq parties structurent cette recherche : 1) les différents aspects de l’Autre dans le corpus ; 2) son image chez chacun des trois auteurs, la fonction du regard et les cinq critères permettant de distinguer son statut ; 3) l’analyse des rapports à autrui et de la question de l’image dans des optiques dites spécifiques ; 4) l’étude comparée de certains statuts particuliers dans leurs rapports avec la question de l’image d’autrui (la femme noire, les métis et mulâtres, les enfants et les jeunes, les êtres d’exception) ; 5) synthèse, analyses et enjeux de la thématique de l’image de l’Autre<br>Around the theme of Other (characterized by differents figures) and the image problematic, come to light a vision of the world and gaze full of sense sources of multiple stakes in which various factors interfere. Charge d'aller enseigner le message du fils du fils de dieu aux noirs d'afrique, le personnage pouvait-il trouver les conditions appropriees a une action independante et desinteressee sans se compromettre avec le pouvoir colonial ? notre enquete montre plutot que le personnage oeuvrait tout aussi bien pour l'eglise que pour sa patrie, contrairement a l'esprit de sa mission. Or, le systeme colonial qui s'appuie sur un regime d'exception, organise l'asservissement et l'exploitation du colonise dont il nie le patrimoine culturel et philosophique. Dans ce contexte social et historique ou l'arbitraire est consubstanciel a l'action menee par le colonisateur, l'imbrication du religieux et du politique, ou mieux encore, la collusion de fait entre le clerge missionnaire et l'administration offre a mongo beti et rene philombe des raisons de contester (vivement) le caractere desinteresse de l'apostolat. Dans les trois romans, le personnage du missionnaire est traite de telle maniere qu'il apparait comme un rouage du systeme colonial. Aussi, le corpus se revele un lieu d'affrontements ideologiques intenses ou les deux romanciers s'appliquent a faire piece aux pretentions du dramatis persona<br>The missionary at the colonial time is depicted negatively in our corpus. The personage, who has the onus of going to teach the message of the begotten of god to the black people of africa, could he find the suitable conditionsnfor conducting an independant and unselfish action without to compromise himself? our research work shows still more that the personage acted not only for the church but also for his country, contrarily to the pontifical directives. Nevertheless, the colonial system which leans on high-handed actions organizes the enslavement and the exploitation of the colonized people. Thus, the problematic of this thesis is to see whether in such a linguistic situation the beti realism functions in the writers' novel texts. The answer to this question is affirmative. Through eza boto's cruel town, ferdinand oyono's the old black and the medal, joseph owono's aunt bella, we discover the beti people in the depth of their culture, their vision of the world and their conception of the life. Elle est histoire dans ce qu'elle evoque des evenements, des personnages. . . Mais l'oeuvre est en meme temps discours; ce ne sont plus les evenements qui comptent, mais la facon dont le narrateur les fait connaitre. ", dans la pre- miere partie, nous avons procede a la caracterisation des personnages d'okon- kwo et de samba diallo, en specifiant la nature de leurs rapports avec les autres personnages, au regard des structures internes de leurs societes res- pectives. L'utilisation des informations recueillies nous a conduit a montrer les insuffisances du modele explicatif de causalite pour rendre compte de leurs echecs. -la deuxieme partie nous a amene a suivre le meme modele ex- plicatif pour caracteriser koume. Toutefois, nous sommes sortis de cette re- cherche des causes sociologiques pour passer aux causes psychologiques, en montrant ce que nos trois heros ont voulu traduire par leurs echecs. Des syn- theses generales mettent en evidence le fait qu'okonkwo, samba diallo et kou- me sont le lieu d'optatifs contradictoires. D'ou notre recours a la configu- ration symbolique comme seul element invariant dans les trois recits examines. En conclusion, nous avons etabli que le tragique des personnages vient de ce qu'ils ne parviennent pas a integrer les valeurs ethiques negro- africaines dans le systeme des valeurs modernes. Car, qu'il s'agisse d'okonkwo, de samba diallo ou de koume, la mort survient parce que les personnages ne font plus partie de leurs structures tribales natales.

Le β-carotène (Bc) est un caroténoïde connu pour son activité pro vitaminique A. La consommation de fruits et légumes riches en Bc est donc particulièrement encouragée, principalement dans les pays en développement. Cependant, au cours d'un repas, la biodisponibilité du Bc est influencée par la présence des macro et microconstituants des aliments. L'objectif général de ce travail a été d'étudier les interactions alimentaires pouvant survenir au cours des différentes étapes du processus d'absorption du Bc. La bioaccessibilité du Bc, évaluée à l'aide d'un modèle de digestion in vitro, a révélé que la quantité de Bc micellarisé des aliments de base (patate douce orange (PDO) et banane plantain) des pays du Sud se retrouve augmentée dans certaines préparations tratitionnelles. De plus, dans une simple association de deux aliments, nos résultats ont montré que la naringine de jus d'agrumes diminuait la bioaccessibilité du Bc de la PDO car ce flavanone se micellarise et entre en compétition avec le Bc. L'effet de flavanones sur l'absorption intestinale du Bc a ensuite été étudié à l'aide d'un modèle cellulaire de type Caco-2. L'ensemble des glycosides de flavanones testés, mais principalement l'hespéridine (Hes), ont augmenté l'absorption du Bc. L'expérimentation in vivo chez la gerbille n'a quant à elle pas montré d'effet de l'Hes sur la bioefficacité du Bc de la PDO. Par contre, nos données suggèrent que l'Hes, dans le cas d'un régime carencé en caroténoïdes et vitamine A, pourrait stimuler l'activité de la β,β-carotène mono-oxygénase par un mécanisme impliquant le facteur de transcription PPARγ<br>Β-carotene (Bc) is a carotenoid mainly known for its provitaminic A activity. Therefore, the consumption of fruits and vegetables rich in Bc are promoted, especially in developing countries. However, during a meal, the Bc bioavailability was modulated by other macro or micronutrients from food. The main objective of this study was to evaluate food interaction occurring during the different steps of Bc absorption. The Bc bioaccessibility, evaluated through an in vitro digestion, showed that the micellarization of Bc staple foods from South countries (orange fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) and plantain) increases in some traditional food preparations. Moreover, we observed that the Bc bioaccessibility from OFSP decreases in the presence of Citrus juice because of the naringin which competes for incorporation into mixed micelles. Effects of flavanones were then assessed on intestinal Bc uptake using Caco-2 cells. Among flavanone glycosides tested, mainly hesperidin (Hes), increased Bc uptake. In vivo experimentation with gerbil did not shown any effect of Hes on the bioefficacity of Bc from OFSP. By contrast, our data suggest that under a low Bc or vitamin A free diet, Hes might enhance BCMO1 activity through its action as agonist of PPARγ

Les dérivés ester et un dérivé acide ont été évalués avec succès en tant que phases stationnaires chirales en Chromatographie en Phase Gazeuse. Les dérivés pentènylés ont été greffés sur gel de silice et leurs énantiosélectivités ont été estimées grâce à l'analyse de quelques solutés. Nous avons pu discuter des mécanismes de reconnaissance chirale et ainsi tenter d'améliorer leur compréhension<br>The main goal of this work is the synthesis of mono-functionalized permethylated b-cyclodextrin derivatives with an acid, an ester or a terminal olefin group. Les complexes mer-feh si(or)#3 (co)#3 (pph#2ch#2c(o)r constituent les precurseurs polyfonctionnels utiles pour la preparation de nouveaux complexes tetranucleaires, pentanucleaires et hexanucleaires comportant les unites fe-cd et fe-cd-fe, dans lesquels le coordinat phosphine peut servir de ligand assembleur en formant un pont entre deux metaux. Le comportement eta#2-mu#2-si-o du groupe si(or)#3 a ete mis en evidence par des etudes de diffraction des rayons x. Par ailleurs, nous avons teste les proprietes coordinantes de phosphines cetone vis-a-vis de complexes carbonyles du rhenium et mis en evidence le comportement hemilabile de ces coordinats. Un autre aspect de ce travail concerne la reactivite de complexes du palladium(ii) du type (chelate)pd ph#2pch=c(o)r vis-a-vis d'un compose azo eto(o)cn=nc(o)oet. Ces enolates conduisent a de nouveaux coordinats fonctionnels resultant d'un couplage c-n entre le carbone enolique et la double liaison n=n. Le dernier chapitre de cette these decrit la premiere caracterisation cristallographique de l'anion b#2f#7#

Previous issue date: 2005-02-28<br>Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico<br>A cromatografia de troca iônica é uma técnica que há décadas vem sendo estudada, mas apenas recentemente começou a ser amplamente difundida na purificação de macromoléculas. Para se conhecer os fundamentos e aplicações desta técnica, foi realizada uma revisão sobre o assunto, no formato de artigo, enfocando principalmente a purificação de proteínas. Foram abordados tópicos como a estrutura protéica, o mecanismo de troca iônica, os diversos fatores que influenciam este processo e apresentados exemplos de aplicação da cromatografia de troca iônica na purificação de proteínas. Para que esses processos sejam economicamente viáveis e operacionalmente seguros devem ser otimizados, sendo importante o conhecimento do equilíbrio termodinâmico do processo. Foram determinadas as isotermas de adsorção para as proteínas α-lactoalbumina (α-la) e β-lactoglobulina (β-lg) em uma coluna de troca iônica em sistemas monocomponentes, a quatro temperaturas (283.15 K, 293.15 K, 303.15 K e 313.15 K). Dentre os cinco diferentes tipos de modelos de isotermas ajustados, os modelos de Langmuir, Jovanovic e Toth apresentaram os melhores resultados. A análise termodinâmica baseada na equação não-linear de van t Hoff demonstrou que o processo de troca iônica para as duas proteínas nas condições estudadas é endotérmico, entropicamente dirigido, ocorrendo de maneira espontânea (∆G0ad < 0) com o aumento da temperatura. Por fim, foram estudados sistemas multicomponentes formados por α-la e β-lg em diferentes proporções (1:1, 1:3, 3:1 e 1:2). Foi proposta uma modificação no método de análise frontal empregado para a determinação das isotermas de adsorção competitivas. Ao invés do método proposto por Jacobson et al. (1987) para sistemas multicomponentes, foi utilizado o método proposto por Jacobson et al. (1984) para sistemas monocomponentes, aplicado simultaneamente para os diferentes compostos do sistema. O modelo competitivo de Langmuir se ajustou satisfatoriamente aos dados experimentais, comprovando que a alternativa proposta pode ser aplicada a sistemas multicomponentes formados por macromoléculas.<br>The ion-exchange chromatography is a technique that has been studied at a long time, but just now began to be diffused to macromolecules purification. To a better understanding of this technique, a review was made, focusing mainly the purification of proteins. It was seen topics as protein structure, the mechanism of ion- exchange, the factors that influence this process and many examples of application of ion-exchange chromatography in the proteins purification. For these processes to be economically viable and operationally safes, they should be optimized, being important the knowledge of the thermodynamic equilibrium of the process. It was obtained the adsorption isotherms of α-lactalbumin (α-la) and β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) presents in single-component systems, in a ion-exchange column at four temperatures (283.15 K, 293.15 K, 303.15 K and 313.15 K). The adjustment of five different isotherm models was verified, and the Langmuir, Jovanovic and Toth models presented the best results. Thermodynamic analysis based on the non-linear van't Hoff equation demonstrated that the process of ion-exchange of both proteins in the studied conditions is endothermic, entropically driven, occurring spontaneously (∆G0ad < 0) with the increase of temperature. Finally, it was studied multicomponent systems formed for α-la and β-lg at different proportions (1:1, 1:3, 3:1 and 1:2). A modification was proposed in the frontal analysis method used for the determination of competitive adsorption isotherms. Instead of the method proposed by Jacobson et al. (1987) for multicomponent systems, the method proposed by Jacobson et al. (1984) for single-component systems was used, applied simultaneously for each compound of the complex system. The competitive Langmuir model was adjusted satisfactorily to the experimental data, showing that this alternative method can be applied to multicomponent systems formed by macromolecules.

Dès lors qu’elle autorise une étude menée sur le long terme, embrassant aussi bien des textes qui relèvent de la documentation impériale que des glossaires contemporains, l’évocation d’une tentation encyclopédique vise à l’étude d’un continuum heuristique entre les ères coloniales et postcoloniales : elle conduit en effet à mettre en évidence l’évolution d’un discours érudit spécifique, caractérisé par une position de surplomb classificatrice ainsi que par une prédilection pour la collection et « l’inventaire culturel » de l’inconnu.Si l’encyclopédisme permet donc de nourrir l’analyse épistémologique d’un « africanisme » contesté et d’interroger les modalités de sa subversion potentiellement « indisciplinée », notre propos est avant tout de le considérer comme un outil d’analyse des formes plastiques et romanesques – et plus spécialement comme un point d’entrée pour évoquer des productions apparentées à ce que Bernard Mouralis nomme les « contre-littératures ». L’attention prêtée aux tentations encyclopédiques chez Paul Hazoumé, Georges Ngal et Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, mais aussi chez Théodore Monod, Alain Mabanckou ou Hassan Musa, permet de relire ces œuvres au prisme d’une porosité entre savoir et création.Combinant l’exercice de la citation érudite et l’élan d’une puissance spéculative tournée vers l’avenir, l’encyclopédie pose l’hypothèse d’une mise à plat qui autoriserait la juxtaposition libératrice d’éléments a priori hétérogènes. Mettant en scène un savoir labile et un individu hypertrophié, l’encyclopédisme est un phénomène romanesque de notre temps et il constitue à cet égard un terrain commun aux littératures françaises et francophones contemporaines<br>As it induces a long-term study embracing both imperial literature and contemporary glossaries, the evocation of an encyclopaedic temptation aims to examine a heuristic continuum between colonial and postcolonial eras. It highlights the evolution of a specific scholarly discourse, characterized by an overarching position of classification as well as a predilection for the “cultural inventory” of the unknown. If encyclopaedism thus allows to nourish the epistemological analysis of "africanism" and to question the modalities of its “undisciplined” adaptations, we shall essentially consider it as a tool for the analysis of plastic and literary forms – especially as a point of entry to what Bernard Mouralis called “counter-literatures”. The attention paid to encyclopaedic temptations experienced by Paul Hazoumé, Georges Ngal and Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, but also by Théodore Monod, Alain Mabanckou or Hassan Musa, allows to re-read these works as the expression of a porosity between knowledge and creation. Combining the exercise of the scholarly quotation with a speculative impetus towards the future, the encyclopaedia sets the hypothesis of a flattening perspective allowing the free juxtaposition of heterogeneous elements. In a context of agonistic rivalry surrounding postcolonial knowledge, it offers a leveled and pacified encounter space, the painful setback of which is embodied by marginal and contested encyclopaedic figures. Staging a labile knowledge and a hypertrophied individual, encyclopaedism is indeed a phenomenon of our time and therefore offers a common ground for contemporary French and Francophone literatures

Il s’agit d’examiner les stratégies des agents à partir des cas de René Maran, Léopold Sédar Senghor, Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant et Mongo Beti et de percevoir comment ils se définissent leur identité littéraire et sociale.<p>Pour ce faire, notre démarche s’articule en deux temps :(1) examiner les conditions de possibilité d’un champ littéraire afro-antillais à Paris (colonisation française et ses effets, configuration d’un champ littéraire pré-institutionnalisé, etc.) ;(2) analyser les processus de consolidation du champ, ainsi que les luttes internes qui opposent deux tendances émergentes représentées d’abord par Senghor et Césaire, ensuite par Beti et Glissant, dont les prises de position littéraires mettent en œuvre des « modèles empiriques » ;ceux-ci régulent et unifient leurs rapports au monde et à l’Afrique.<p><p>This study relates to afro-carribean literature in colonial period (1920-1960). Mongo Beti (1932-2001), romancier, pamphletaire et journaliste, a abondamment enchaine un
discours continu sur certaines questions socio-politiques portant sur la vie au Cameroun. II nous
a fait un legs durable de son oeuvre romanesque qui s'etend de l'ere coloniale jusqu'au debut du
XXIe siecle, et depeint de facon dynamique revolution socio-historique de son pays natal.
Le renouvellement de son style romanesque dans la realisation de Trop de soleil tue
I'amour (1999) et de Branle-bas en noir et blanc (2000), ses deux derniers romans, merite un
examen des modifications narratives et de leurs effets par rapport a la forme narrative de ses
romans precedents. Bien que nous demontrions une evolution romanesque possible en
comparant quelques-uns de ses romans contestataires, a savoir Ville cruelle (1954), Le Pauvre
Christ de Bomba (1956) et Mission terminee (1957), avec Trop de soleil tue I'amour et Branlebas
en noir et blanc, nous decouvrirons egalement, du point de vue narratologique, que Beti a
conserve dans une certaine mesure les fonctions premieres accordees a ses narrateurs.
Afin de degager des changements identifiables, cette etude reposera sur l'approche
narratologique edifiee par Gerard Genette dans Figures III (1972). Nous examinerons en
particulier la perceptibilite de la presence du narrateur betien, ses rapports avec le recit et avec
l'histoire et la facon dont certains aspects de Pinstance narrative se modifient d'un recit a
1'autre. Nous releverons ainsi de notre corpus des eloignements et des rapprochements entre les
narrateurs autodiegetique, homodiegetique et heterodiegetique betiens, quant a leur situation
narrative et leurs fonctions. Selon l'approche adoptee, nous verrons que Beti manipule les outils
de la narration pour transmettre, sous forme d'un discours romanesque impressionnant, ses

Following their independence in the 1960s the new governments of such French-speaking, African nations as Togo, Ivory Coast, Congo and Chad (to name only few), for the most part embraced policies that were authoritarian. A direct upshot socially of the lack of free speech imposed by certain African regimes was the migration of a large number of intellectuals from the black continent, yearning to rediscover their voices in more developed, democratic countries. Many, while living in exile, turned to writing or continued to write in such a way that the painful stories of the Africa they left behind could unfold before the eyes of the larger world and somehow bring a positive change to the leadership in Africa.
One of these committed Francophone African writers of the Diaspora was Mongo Béti. In my dissertation, I explore the effects of an exile’s life on this writer's journalistic work by a careful analysis of the articles he published from 1978 to 1991 in the bimonthly review, "Peuples noirs, peuples africains", which he co-founded with his wife, Odile Tobner. My approach is to focus on the dual causality in Béti’s literary efforts through a better acquaintance with his review: the migratory factor that conveys, on the one hand, the notion of cultural integration and the creative spirit in perpetual exile and, on the other hand, the neocolonial factor that constantly connects the protagonist to his origins as he radically refutes poor governance and dictatorship in his home country and in the so-called independent francophone Africa, or to the ex-colonizer reluctant to give up its ill-fated 'mission civilisatrice'.
Through later research, I hope to develop my work by thematically analyzing three formative periods of the author's life: the period before his exile, the time during his thirty two years of exile, and the period after his exile, in order to better contextualize factors of influence and their varying degree over time in his writing, both journalistic and novelistic.

l’aliénation des intellectuels, du moins ce que le peuple désignait sous ce terme dans les excolonies françaises et belges. Le recours fréquent, dans la construction du récit, à la
thématique de la faute de l’intellectuel se présente comme résultat d’un manquement au rôle
qui lui revient. Pour mener à bien notre enquête, la théorie utilisée est l’Analyse de contenu
thématique (A.C.T.) de Pierre Lannoy. Ce modèle aidera à cerner tout ce qui menace
l’équilibre de l’édifice social. Cependant l’étude de l’aliénation des intellectuels a montré
que l’émergence d’une crise semblable relève d’une série de causes complexes. Sa
compréhension fait appel à de multiples champs scientifiques : sociologie, psychologie,
économie, […] La seule solution est le compromis pour tous. C’est une vaine prétention que
de vouloir établir ici un bilan exhaustif : l’étude de l’image de l’intellectuel ne peut qu’être évolutive.<br>In the aftermath of African independence, writers tried to denounce, if not the alienation of
intellectuals, at least what people meant by this term in the former French and Belgian
colonies. Frequent recourse to the theme of the fault of the intellectual in the construction of
the narrative is presented as the result of a failure to fulfil the role that was assigned to him.
To carry out our investigation, the theory used is Pierre Lannoy's Thematic Content Analysis
(T.C.A.). This model will help to identify anything that threatens the balance of the social
edifice. However, the study of the alienation of intellectuals has shown that the emergence
of a similar crisis is due to a series of complex causes. Its understanding involves multiple
scientific fields: sociology, psychology, economics, [...] The only solution is compromise for

This thesis analyzes the major theme of ‘postcolonial genealogy’ in portraying the African bending under the weight of colonial history in Le vieux nègre et la médaille, Une vie de boy of Ferdinand Oyono and Le Chercheur d’Afriques of Henri Lopes. Being a product of a colonial Genesis, the African character runs behind the colonizer’s mirror through his Civilizing Mission. René Girard’s ‘double bind’ theory explains how this cultural assimilation is, in Le vieux nègre et la médaille and Une vie de boy, a dead end because the colonizer needs a subordinate and not an equal. The cohabitation of a black housewife with the French Commander in Le Chercheur d’Afriques should be seen as simply an allegory of postcolonial Africa’s dependency on the West. The consequences of the feminization of the African continent are enormous in the post-colonial imaginary. While the colonizer had conquered Africa with his Herculean body, in Oyono’s novels, his Fall is obtained through the aesthetics of Bakhtinian ‘rabaissement’ which degrades his ‘grotesque body’ to that of the colonized. The colonizer and the colonized are neutralized and leveled in their perishable bodies, thus, making futile the Civilizing Mission that operated by ranking races. Power is never total. It is always imperfect, and can never destroy a subjectivity that resists it. In Oyono’s novels, the Fall of the colonial Father is also obtained through the inquisitive gaze that the colonized return back to the colonizer, and through their ‘subversive mimicry’ that parodies his codes. In Une vie de boy and Le Chercheur d’Afriques, the ‘son-Father’ relationship between the hero and the colonial Father, is also symbolic of the ‘Africa-West’ rapports. Living under the specter of the Father, the son has to negotiate his survival between weaning and parricide.
