Full textThe environmental impact of civil engineering construction is one of the main concerns found in most research efforts in the field. Recent research has shown the importance of the amount of waste generated by rebound in the shotcrete process and has emphasized this aspect in this field. The project was undertook at Laval University’s Shotcrete Laboratory and is part of an effort to better understand rebound mechanisms that generate this waste. It investigates the rebound at the spray-scale to help understand how equipment and material choises affect this phenomenon. This project is divided in two distinct portions: a rebound model at the spray scale and the implementation of a program to automate the calculation of the particle velocity distributions in the spray. First, in order to help generate the experimental data required to study rebound at the sprayscale, a computer program has been developed. This program is based on an optical flow method developed by Black & Anadam (1996). From two successive images, particle velocities are calculated. Working with a large number of images and enhancing their quality allowed to approximate the velocity distribution in the spray. The most promising results were obtained during analysis when the image quality was best optimized. A rebound model at the spray-scale was then developed by combining the results of previous research projects in shotcrete. Armelin (1998) was the first to develope a particle-scale rebound model based on an elastoplastic representation of the substrate and on the incident kinetic energy of the particle. Ginouze in 2014 then developed different testing methods that allowed a complete characterization of the shotcrete spray. By combining the results of these studies, a new spray-scale rebound model was created and the results were correlated the experimental results. Rebound values however were strongly overestimated. By introducing an innovative new concept representing the variations of rheological properties of the substrate due to the vibration caused by the incident particles, a better estimation of rebound was achieved. In conclusion, the project fulfilled its exploring mission and opened the way to automated velocity distribution measurement in the spray. Moreover, solid bases of a rebound spray-scale model were established by taking into account the rheological properties variations in the different substrate areas.

Full textAmong the complex phenomena involved in the placement of shotcrete, material losses through rebound remains an important preoccupation. Despite efforts in mixture design improvements and nozzleman training, there are no studies available that truly evaluate the effect of equipment and placement process on the in-place shotcrete quality and the associated rebound. To this day, our understanding of rebound mechanisms is based on a single model validated only at the aggregate scale. In this context, the present study is aimed at further characterizing and studying the phenomena controlling shotcrete placement at the spray scale. The study is organized around two main aspects: characterising the spraying phenomena at the exit of the nozzle and studying the impact of material on the receiving surface. At the particle scale, a 1D model based on Newton's second law has been developed and has made it possible to clearly identify the parameters controlling the acceleration of particles in a compressed air stream. The use of a high-speed imaging system characterized, for the first time, the velocity fields generated by three different nozzles and proposed the relevant analytical expressions. To complete the study on the spraying phenomena, innovative experimental setups have helped reveal the spatial distribution of the material in the spray and on the receiving surface. The accumulation and consolidation of material on impact has also been illustrated using the high-speed imaging system. In conclusion, the study demonstrates clearly that the conditions prevailing at the exit of the nozzle have a significant effect on the uniformity of the impact conditions (velocities, energy) and will consequently influence those of placement and consolidation of the material on the receiving surface. As well as offering a number of important experimental and analytical tools, this study proposes an innovative approach for the study of the shotcrete process and offers multiple future research perspectives.

Full textThe loss of material caused by rebound in dry-mix shotcrete has been the subject of much research work for several decades now. Until now, research efforts to reduce this rebound have mainly focused on the concrete mix-design or the equipment used. Few studies have addressed the influence of placement techniques on the efficiency of the deposition. Based on its knowledge and in continuity with earlier projects, of its dynamics initiated a few years ago, the shotcrete laboratory of Université Laval decided to orient this study towards the application techniques of shotcrete. Two trends have been present for a few years in the shotcrete industry. Mechanically assisted applications, as hydraulic placement arm, which brought precision and control the movement of the nozzle are more popular. At the same time, the industry has seen the development of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and some special fiber-reinforced concretes which have allowed the design of construction elements with reduced thickness, therefore saving resources, but resulting in complex geometry structures that the use of formwork hardly allows. This is how the idea was born to combine mechanical shotcrete placement to create complex and optimized structures with these high-performance materials. This study has a dual objective. The first one is to acquire, install and put to work a robotized solution which, in the long term, will allow the development of an optimized and autonomous construction process for pneumatic spraying. The second objective is to study the placement parameters to further control and reduce rebound. he precise control of movement afforded by this equipment has allowed for a significant reduction in the amount of rebound, exploring areas where no data in the literature existed, and has challenged the effectiveness of some sprayed concrete practices.

Full textUltra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is well known for its great compressive resistance and its ductility. Furthermore, it is also well known that UHPFRC strongly depends on fibers’ orientations relatively to the direction of stresses. However, little is documented in the literature about the impact of local fiber discontinuity caused by casting defect. In this MSc thesis, a laboratory protocol is developed in order to measure the impact of the presence of defects in a UHPFRC slab on the mechanical response. This protocol is based on a system of photogrammetric measurement by digital image correlation (DIC). This technique allows the precise measure of the deformation as well as the displacement with help of a pair of high resolution digital camera. A computer-based post treatment analysis of these pictures is used to create a 3D model of the observed sample surface. With this new analysis method, it is possible to present different aspect of the non-linear behavior of this material. During this project, 6 different geometries of slab with and without casting defect were submitted to flexional stress by punctual loading. By developing a laboratory protocol adapted to this project, digital image correlation analysis gave a multitude of very precise results. A specific attention is made to the impact of the defect on the global mechanical behavior as well as the local damaging caused by the micro-cracks.

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to investigate the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete under chloride environment, in relation to the impact of top-casting-induced defects in the steel-concrete interface, artificial transverse crack and load-induced transverse cracks.Three main parts are included in this thesis. The first part investigates the characteristics of steel-concrete interface, including the distribution of air bubbles at steel-concrete interface, the properties of bleed water voids and the microstructure of cement hydration products at steel-concrete interface, and the effect of top-casting defects on the chloride ions penetration at steel-concrete interface. The second part studies the effect of top-casting defects and artificial crack on the corrosion behavior of steel rebars in early corrosion period under chloride environment, containing the pitting corrosion distribution and the kinetic process analysis of steel rebar in concrete. The third part discusses the influence of top-casting-induced defects on the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel of naturally corroded beams under sustained loading in a relative long exposure term, including the cracking maps of RC beams, the chloride profiles, the cross-sectional loss of reinforcing steel and the distribution of corrosion on steel rebars.According to the experimental results from the first part, it was found that, air bubbles mainly appeared at the location of the rib zone of the bottom side of deformed steel according to the casting direction. Bleed water voids always appeared at the bottom interface of steel-concrete, while the top interface of steel-concrete was denser compared to that of the bottom interface. Portlandite crystals and ettringites mainly nucleated and grown at the bottom interface of steel-concrete. The presence of bleed water voids facilitated the transportation of chloride ions at the steel-concrete interface. In the case of the second part, corrosion mainly initiated at the location of rib zone of the bottom side of steel rebar according to the casting direction due to the presence of top-casting defects. The steel bars in concrete with artificial crack exhibited a higher corrosion rate corrosion compared to the steel bars in concrete without artificial crack in early period. However, after this period, a similar corrosion rate was identified for steel rebars in concrete with or without artificial crack. For the third part, top-casting defects are the most significantly impacting factor accelerating the deterioration of reinforced concrete. In the case of compressive bars, with top-casting defects, although the distribution of corrosion was random, corrosion was manly prone to occur at the bottom side of compressive bars facing top-casting defects. Without top-casting defects, the corrosion was more prominent on the outside part of rebars facing the concrete surface exposed to chloride ingress. After the presence of corrosion-induced cracks, corrosion gradually developed all around the perimeter of rebars, with the result that top-casting defect no longer affected the corrosion process. In the case of tensile bars, with top-casting-induced defects, corrosion starts at service cracks and then develops preferentially at the bottom surface of the tensile bar. Without top-casting defects, corrosion starts at service cracks but does not develop along the tensile bars. It is only when the chloride content at the depth of reinforcement reaches a critical value that corrosion develops along the tensile bar-preferentially at the outside surface of the rebar because of its probable higher chloride content

Full textTo overcome the inconveniences of current demoulding methods, a new technique based on the concrete polarization has been developed. The principle, based on the phenomenon of electro-osmosis, is to apply an electric potential between the reinforcement and formwork leading to water displacement to the concrete/formwork interface where a film of water, able to avoid the adhesion of the concrete with the formwork, is formed. This device also allowed verifying the casting and reproducibility of the concrete by using electrical resistance. A feasibility study proved the interstitial water displacement and demolding possibility. To obtain a good quality of facing and demolding, the polarization parameters (voltage value, time and duration of its application) have been optimized according to room temperature and concrete formulations. For temperatures above 20 ± 2 °C, the polarization conditions are the same for all the concrete formulations. At temperatures below 20 ± 2 °C, the addition of the accelerator was required at each time and the value of the applied voltage had to be increased. All results showed that the thickness of water film and the conductivity value of the concrete determine the quality of the concrete facings and demolding. The application of the optimal conditions provides a similar quality of concrete facings or even better in some cases, than those obtained with the demoulding oils currently used. With these results, the technique has been transposed in-situ and it gave satisfactory results

Full textShotcrete is a fast, cost-saving, sustainable and versatile concrete placement method that offers numerous advantages over conventional concrete in a variety of new construction and repair works. One of the major benefits of the shotcrete process is that it can be sprayed over irregular surfaces and can cover large surfaces with little or no formwork. Howbeit, these same versatile features also often make shotcrete vulnerable to restrained shrinkage cracking. Cracking occurs mainly because of the highly restrained conditions that are inherent in many shotcrete applications (spraying on a rigid substrate). If shrinkage is restrained, internal tensile stresses are progressively induced in the element which can lead to cracking when the stresses eventually exceed the tensile strength of the material. Cracking of repair materials is unarguably one of the major challenges facing the repair industry worldwide today. Cracking can shorten the service life of concrete structures (accelerated corrosion, delamination, etc.) and often requires significant additional costly maintenance. Yet, reliable material data on parameters that influence the longterm service life and cracking in-place shotcrete is scarce. This lack of information on the influence of mixture composition as well as the placement process makes it difficult, if not impossible, to predict the long-term cracking behaviour of shotcrete. Furthermore, key mixture parameters that lead to cracking have been very difficult to identify. For this reason, it has become imperative for material characterization to be made on the basis of a restrained shrinkage test. In this thesis, different fresh and hardened shotcrete properties such as spraying consistency, rebound, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, free shrinkage, and restrained shrinkage deformation are investigated. The project focuses particularly on mix designs and compositions, placement process and the potential for cracking due to restrained shrinkage. The shrinkage ring test method which has been recently adapted and improved for shotcrete will be used to evaluate the cracking potential. Based on the experimental data that will be generated, an in-depth analysis of stress development and cracking resistance of shotcrete will be conducted.
