Full textInterest in sustainable development has increased in recent decades with the discovery of serious environmental challenges. On the other hand, recent research in the field of shotcrete has contributed to the transition to mixtures that better meet these new challenges. In this context, this research project aims to develop and study several mixtures of shotcrete with environmental value added in order to offer alternatives to conventional mixtures to the industry. First, high efficiency mixtures containing rheological agents were evaluated to reduce the losses associated with the rebound of shotcrete. Magnesium aluminosilicate (ASM) reduced the rebound by about 10%, but resulted in problems of strength and durability related to high W/B ratios. The superplasticizer increased the rebound by more than 20% because it was impossible to increase the concrete’s water content without affecting its stability. Diutan gum did not seem to be activated in the dry-mix shotcrete process. The mixtures were then tested with predampening to improve the effect of the agents, but the rebound was increased with this technique. In addition, mixtures containing post-consumer materials hardly recycled have been evaluated in order to minimize the need for natural resources. The use of 20% plastic and rubber aggregates in substitution of the aggregate volume resulted in a loss of the concrete’s compressive strength of 40% and 60%, respectively, but their use in industry is possible. The elasticity and static electricity of the rubber particles resulted in a significant decrease in dust emission. The low modulus of elasticity and the ductile properties of the plastic and the rubber give shotcrete a high energy absorption potential which could be multiplied in the presence of fibers. Finally, the potential of the mixtures was evaluated with an economic and environmental analysis based on shotcrete influence parameters, mixtures properties and unit costs. The performance of the mixture containing ASM was particularly good with a reduction in conventional costs of 7% and a reduction of CO₂ emissions of 26%.

Full textThe goal of this research project consists to reduce the ammonia emissions produced from the floor in growing-finishing pig barns. To do this, three main factors were investigated: the slats section shapes, the presence of an epoxy coating and the presence of a notch along the slats. This project is divided into two parts. The first part consisted to develop slats allowing to reduce the soiled surfaces. Prototypes developed during this part of the project resulted in soiled surfaces reduction ranging between 41 and 80 %, compared to a control slat. The second part consisted to measure ammonia emission of the developed prototypes when subjected to fouling simulations. Only the presence of a notch allowed to reduce ammonia emissions significantly. Emission reductions measured ranged between 22 and 42 %, in comparison with a control slat.

Full textDue to their low cost, lightness and thermal properties, lignocellulosic byproducts received a particular attention, in the recent years, for manufacturing lightweight concretes. However, these byproducts are not fully compatible with the cement matrix, leading to setting delay, significant dimensional variations, and low mechanical strengths of the composites elaborated. To avoid such drawbacks, a coating process of flax shives using different substances has been adopted in this study. It leads to a reduction in treated shive water absorption compared to raw shives. The composites obtained exhibit significant improvements in hydrous behavior and mechanical strengths with moderate increase in the apparent bulk density and thermal conductivity. The phenomena of moisture transfer in the produced composites can significantly influence the durability and performance of them. In fact most of the materials used in the building area are porous, containing water as vapor or liquid. Therefore the water vapour permeability, sorption isotherms and moisture buffering capacity have been determined. The results obtained show the good hygric performance of the eco-composites elaborated. Three leaching tests have been proposed in this study to identify the chemical speciation of the materials and to evaluate their releasing into the environment. The experimental conditions of the leaching tests have been chosen to simulate different states of our composites in external environments in service or end of life. The leaching behaviour of the cement-based products elaborated differs little according to flax shive treatment and the leaching of toxic substances has not been identified

Full textSeveral factors can affect the behavior and properties of fresh concrete during transportation from the production plant to the job site, such as weather conditions, delivery conditions or the human factor. To overcome this phenomenon, Denis Beaupré has developed a rheological probe that is fixed inside the drum of concrete mixers, allowing continuous monitoring of the properties of fresh concrete. In this context, this study proposes an assessment of the economic and environmental benefits of integrating this system into concrete production. The economic impact is first studied by comparing the time spent by trucks with and without probe at 4 distinct stages of the delivery process. On-site truck waiting time is reduced by a minimum of 24.4% in the study, thanks to the use of the probe. The optimization of time generates an immediate economic gain of more than 180 000 dollars per year for a single concrete production plant. The experimental part showed that the priming is influenced linearly by the value of the slump of the concrete whereas the unloading volume per turn seems to be more influenced by the truck itself. For the truck and the subsidence range studied, the concrete pressure exerted on the probe is no longer detected below 3m3 of loading. The Environmental Product Declaration of Ready-Mix Concrete is used to quantify potential gains. The environmental impact of 1 m3 of fresh concrete is improved by 9% with the assumption that the probe can reduce the margin of safety of the expected compressive strength at 28 days. Finally, reducing this margin of safety by 5 MPa thanks to the probe has substantially the same environmental benefit as replacing 15% of the cement with fly ash.

Full textModeling the impact of the various rehabilitation methods, as a function of the initiation time of the damage, is the major challenge in the field of structural durability. The durability of a structure is directly linked to the exposure conditions influenced by the climate and the environment where the structure is located. Depending on the degree of exposure, the rate of degradation of structures can then accelerate or be slow. This work develops an in-depth study on the exposure of structures in winter conditions, which includes the use of de-icing salts. A survey was carried out to find out the amount of salt used in Quebec and Canada. In addition, the three most used types of de-icing salt were evaluated to determine its speed of progression in concrete under severe winter conditions. A mobile weather station MexStUL, designed with several sensors of temporal measures, has been developed to monitor exposure conditions in two different experimental sites on severe winter conditions during 2018/19. It was then possible to predict the climatic (temperature, humidity, speed and wind direction, sunshine and precipitation) and environmental factors (traffic, road condition, salt concentration on road, splashes and salt laden mist) relating to the conditions of exposure of the structures. Models were proposed to predict exposure condition using a meteorological station and evaluation of spatial influence of de-icing salt on different types of exposure as well. A new sensor has been developed, measuring the concentration of salt laden mist under severe winter conditions. Results demonstrate an important spatial variability on stagnant water. A model about spatial influence of brine splashes is proposed to delimit this type of exposure. Airborne concentration during winter climate shows an important evolution and a concentration model is proposed and the volume of salt laden mist is also determined during winter.
