Abstract:
Two simple but seemingly profitable betting rules for betting on the away win in association football are developed. One rule is consistent with avoiding those games in which there is a clear favourite. The second rule is based directly on modelling bookmaker odds and assessing the residuals under the fitted model. Contrary to previous research the betting rule using the residuals suggests avoiding betting on those games where there are large discrepancies between bookmaker odds and predicted-model odds.

Sports betting is the oldest form of gambling in the world. In the beginning, it was simply a leisure activity. We are currently talking about a multi-billion-euro deal. The sports betting industry has changed more in 15 years than in the last 50 years. In the 1950s, sports betting began to enter the world and almost nothing changed until the beginning of the 21st century. However, with the onset of the new millennium, online betting has changed the landscape dramatically, and is now developing at a fast pace than ever before. Using betting market volume data for the NFL and NCAA Football, we examine the role of betting volume as it relates to bettor biases, forecast accuracy, and volume-based betting market strategies. We find that betting volume has a statistically significant effect on the percentage bet on the favorite, but its impact is different between the two levels of football. Increased betting volume was shown to not have an impact on forecast accuracy in the sports. Simple betting simulations revealed that underdogs win more than implied by efficiency in low-volume NFL games, but other strategies did not

We find the NBA total line market is generally very efficient with points scored and total lines increasing nearly evenly over the first 17 weeks of the season before leveling off. However, the total line market is inefficient in Week 1 with 58.2% of first week games having total scores less than total lines d

In this paper we consider the case of potential “correlated parlays” in American college football wagering. The structure of college football games is such that games in which favorites prevail in “against-the-spread” (spread) bets are expected to be more likely to go over the posted “total” of the game. Using a longitudinal data set over the years from 2005-2015, our findings confirm this to be the case. However, to prevent bettors from utilizing this trend to profit in their wagers, many sportsbooks disallow some, or all, same-game parlay bets. Consequently, we find that sportsbooks have gen

AbstractThe intersection of gaming and gambling has a long lineage. In recent years this process has amplified, arguably accelerated by developing technological infrastructures which facilitate rapid payment purchases and online and real-time systems which allow companies to communicate directly with users and users to communicate with each other. This chapter traces key issues relating to some notable recent examples of the gaming/gambling intersection. It includes controversies about the status of social casino games and loot boxes; the development and expansion of daily fantasy sports markets; the betting and wagering of skins won or bought through digital games, and; rising opportunities to bet on esports. Each exemplifies how these activities are products of a unique set of social and economic circumstances, how corporations are diversifying and becoming part of a more complex gaming/gambling ecosystem and using data to drive growth, all of which raise particular issues for consumer protection.

Gambling is an ancient human activity. We indulge ourselves by allowing ourselves to experience the dangers and thrills of chance in a somewhat controlled way. The history of lotteries and related games is explored. The chances of drawing various poker hands are laid out. The role of probability in horse racing is described, and how the odds quoted are not strictly statements of probability, but terms on which business is to be done. Political prediction betting markets give us a further interpretation of probability as a way of expressing strength of opinion in a quantifiable, albeit flawed way. Wagers encourage boasters to put their money where their mouth is, and so to quantify their degree of belief.

Abstract:
The motivational value of the context is clearly demonstrated by students in classroom situations posing the title question. This excellent real-life question triggered the design of a special instructional sequence culminating in the addressed problem and aiming to combine different approaches to probability. Considering students’ usual struggle with the field, this attempt may prove valuable. As in the history of Stochastics, investigating the rationality behind the system of odds requires parallel handling of chances and expected value, and can lead to a deeper understanding of complex mathematical models. Recently, Series of Problems have been in the center of attention of the Complex Mathematics Education Research Project in general, as an important characteristic of the Hungarian Guided Discovery approach. Our design roots in this highly problem based tradition and adopts some of Tamás Varga’s ideas in instruction. In our paper, the details and structure of the designed teaching material will be displayed utilizing the tools of this research. Following centuries of tradition, sports betting is flourishing nowadays, particularly benefitting from the opportunities of online forums. Providing entertainment for many, it has great motivational value for students, who often pose the particular question in the title. This question is spot-on: gambling is a highly regulated, nevertheless always lucrative market. From an educational point of view, sports betting gives us a more complex perspective on probability than combinatorial games. History and teaching practice both suggest that the concept of probability bears serious cognitive load, and students often burdened with biases that makes the heart of the concept elude them. Furthermore, instruction sometimes lacks the adequate means to harmonize even the correctly introduced aspects of probability, leaving the students with either fragmented or contradicting ideas. In our paper we will make an attempt to connect the classical (laplacian), statistical (frequentistical) and subjectivistic (bayesian) approaches of probability through a gradually constructed task sequence organized around sports betting. We hypothesize that the investigation of the rationality of odds can foster a more integrated understanding of the concepts probability and expected value. Serious gaming provides a fully controllable environment in which to test and validate theories and methods against human behavior. To evaluate the viability
