Wolf, John William Clark. "Justice between generations." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186242.

Full text
Abstract:
Many of our common moral and political principles have paradoxical consequences when we try to use them to make comparisons between generations, or to guide the future-directed policy choices of the present generation. This dissertation is an attempt to take important steps toward the development of a theory of justice between generations as an extension of a standard liberal theory of justice. I approach the problem in the interest of developing a theory of present-day decision making, and attempt to develop a theory of the way in which the interests of future people should be taken into account in current decisions about social and energy policy. My argument proceeds largely within the limits of contemporary economic theory and contemporary theories of justice. However, I argue that our obligations to future people require that we revise our view of the role of economic theory as a tool for policy makers, and that we allow recognition of the moral significance of future persons to alter our conception of property rights in natural resources.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of particular study is to explore individuals’ perceptions of knowledge sharing and its obstacles in a multigenerational engineering company. This study focuses on two groups of individuals: employees and managers. The perception of knowledge sharing and how differently generations perceive it is covered in this study. The obstacles which could occur during knowledge sharing between different generations in the engineering field are explored. The role of management in knowledge sharing processes is also covered. Methodology: To explore individuals’ perceptions of knowledge sharing and its obstacles in a multigenerational engineering company. A qualitative research approach was applied, using single company case study strategy. The case company is one of the leading construction engineering companies in Latvia. The primary data was gathered by conducting 12 semi-structured interviews, 3 interviews per every generation (Millennial, Generation X and Baby boomer) and 3 interviews with managers. The secondary data was obtained from the company, which included internal documents covering the general information about the company, guidelines and policies. By the usage of primary and secondary data triangulation of the study was reached. Findings: The thesis provides analysis of knowledge sharing and its obstacles within the multigenerational workforce of a construction engineering company. The perceptions of three generational cohorts such as Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials are presented. The conceptual framework for the study was built on the basis of three dimensions such as organizational. individual and technological obstacles. Based on the conceptual framework, authors brought up several propositions which supported the analysis process. The analysis showed that there are differences in perception of knowledge sharing and obstacles connected with it between engineers of different generations. Originality: There has not been any research about knowledge sharing between different generations in Latvia nor in Northern Europe, in general. The engineering field is a knowledge intensive sector, therefore knowledge sharing is crucial. Labor force still contains three different generations, thus it is important to explore whether engineering companies in Latvia have faced knowledge sharing obstacles, as it is a rapidly developing sector in this particular country.

Abstract:
Solidarity between generations in the public pension schemes for the present analysis is related to the force in the PAYG pension systems contract between generations. It is extremely important and relevant issue since financing of benefits in the majority of pension schemes is based on the solidarity between generations. Of special significance is the fact, that the current pension benefits are financed from the current pension fund. Therefore, the solidarity between generations is one of the most important instruments of the state policy.

De, Luca Nicole <1996&gt. "Offensive Advertising with sexist appeal: an analysis between two generations." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/17515.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s consumers are constantly bombarded with advertising messages of all types, like tv commercials, newsletters, printed ads, display advertisements and many others, through multiple media channels. Given all the information to which consumers are exposed, it frequently happens that they do not pay much attention to ads, making the job of advertisers much harder. Many advertisements today are designed to “cut through the clutter”, in order to distinguish themselves from the others. Often advertisers do so by using controversial advertising to arouse discussion among consumers and the audience exposed to it. Controversial adverting though has a twofold effect, it can elicit positive reactions, but can also lead to negative ones when it becomes offensive. This thesis aims to investigate the effects of offensive advertising with sexist appeal among women. In particular the analysis concerns the attitudes of women belonging to two different generations to see weather age is a factor which affects how potentially offensive advertisements impact women’s attitudes towards the ads, the brand and if this has an effect on their purchase behaviour.

Abstract:
Nowadays the respect of the environment is an obligation in maritime works. Vertical concrete caissons with porous plates are often the number one technical solution to enlarge existing ports and/or to improve the agitation of the basins. The footprint is reduced and the demand in quarry materials is less important compared to classical riprap breakwaters. Recently, alternative systems to vertical concrete caissons have been designed. Vertical riprap breakwaters are made of a metal framework enclosing blocks. This kind of structure offers environmental benefits, permeability for currents and a good hydrodynamic performance. This thesis work looks at developing a new 3D-BEM code that is easy to use and integrates porous media. Innovative geometries are tested like spaced gabions with damping chamber or a mix of porous plates and porous media.Describing flows in porous media is an complex issue. Volume averaging method is the common mathematical process used to model porous media flows without drawing every grain of a porous medium. The well-known extended Forchheimer equation describes the volumetric forces applied to the flow by a porous medium through resistance and inertial coefficients. These researches were the occasion to look into this coefficients, especially the one of poorly understood inertia in the case of a porous medium. It plays a major role in very low-KC flows currently occurring in porous breakwaters apart from armour layer.First, a literature review on porous media flows was undertaken. In parallel, the numerical code called Diffra3D was produced. It was then used to look for resistance coefficients of porous media through data coming from three experimental campaigns : one sloshing test on hexapode and two classical reflection-transmission studies in a wave tank. These campaigns were also the occasion to test and calibrate the code. New geometries of porous structures were then tested experimentally and numerically. Two new values of resistance coefficients of a porous medium are proposed. Some interesting features concerning the inertia coefficient CM of a porous medium are also developed. In simulations, we observe that the hydrodynamic behaviour of porous structures in low-KC flows is very sensitive to the coefficient of inertia. This research topic would still deserve further studies in order to find empirical law(s) for the inertia coefficient of a porous medium. The code Diffra3D performs well to model porous media flows. However, it is limited to waves with low steepness. The challenge is to properly characterise the porous medium. This research has shown that innovative porous structures like spaced gabions have proven their place as environmentally-friendly damping breakwaters. They may be commonly used in the future

Abstract:
Due to a demographic change in today’s society, it often occurs that people from different generations cohabitate in workplaces with each other. Due to this change, we observe a re-orientation of society and its beliefs and values, which affects not only organizations themselves, but also the work relationship between younger and older generations and explicitly the relationship between a leader and a follower. Generational diversity evolves, which can have a positive but also a negative impact on the workforce in organizations. The aim of this master thesis is to give an insight of how generations experience their leader-follower relationships in multigenerational workplaces, on the example of Millennials and Baby Boomers. For this purpose, a tendency to an inductive research approach was chosen. Firstly, a theoretical background is comprised, which includes a description of generations as well as leader-follower relationships. Secondly, a qualitative empirical study was pursued, with interview participants of the Millennial as well as Baby Boomer generation, in either leading or following positions. Based on the empirical data, nine areas of experience were discovered. These include open communication connected with honesty, work climate, mindset towards change, learning from each other, appreciating each other, respect, trust, intensity of relationship and preconceptions. The experiences of Millennials and Baby Boomers in leading as well as following positions can be categorised in these areas. The findings shall serve as a contribution for leaders as well as followers who cohabitate with each other in multigenerational workplaces. The study provides an insight of what Millennials and Baby Boomers value and expect in their workplace today, with the help of which a positive work climate can be ensured.

This thesis investigated what influenced student at Malmö Högskola in their choice of train or plane travel between Malmö and Stockholm. The thesis proposed four hypotheses that were investigated: maximization of leisure time, substitute goods, comfort and environmental concern. Data was collected by manufacturing and distributing a questionnaire to 248 students which was analyzed statistically. Environmental concern was found to have less of an influence on the choice of travel means than the other investigated factors, a result consistent with previous research. Cost was found to be the most important factor. Train travel was more common among the sampled population than in the Swedish population. The results were associated with some uncertainty as the population was likely to change their choice of travel means after graduation. The thesis aimed to carry out an initial measurement of the above variables to allow the resulting material to be used in future studies with a generational replacement approach.

Abstract:
As the digital age matures, we seek to understand the Generation X and Generation Z, precisely their visual perception and emotional responses to the different dimensions of online aesthetics - classical and expressive. The development of digital products and environments with a specific user experience in mind is beneficial for creating the most suitable outcome. Emotional responses to the different aesthetics can have an impact on consumers' behaviour as well as on their opinion and the image of the digital content presented. Previous research has proven that age has an impact on visual perception and online experience, but little is known about differences in needs and approaches between the important web user groups of Generation X and Generation Z when presented with a web interface. Our research focuses on their emotional responses and initial reactions towards website interfaces that have been influenced by a specific aesthetic style and seeks to find observations to improve the online experience of these two generations. The study examined individuals from Generation X and Generation Z by conducting semi-structured interviews. We focused on two aesthetic extremes - classical design and expressive design. Participants were shown websites with high levels of the two contrasting aesthetics and asked to review their feelings caused by the websites and thoughts about the designs. Three categories of sites were used to expand the scope of websites: e-commerce, articles, and portfolios. This study found no major concrete differences between the generations and how they perceived the aesthetic extremes and reacted to them. Both generations preferred web interfaces with classical aesthetics. However, we have identified some critical structural needs that our participants have expressed irrelevant to the aesthetic direction of the page. Pages with entertainment value benefited from a more expressive aesthetic and the sites where functionality is a higher priority benefitted from a more classical aesthetic. We also came to the conclusion that none of the generations preferred a single specific aesthetic direction, therefore, no definite aesthetic preferences for either generation could be drawn. Nonetheless, small differences in emotional responses were defined. Generation Z was more open towards more expressive and visually engaging sites compared to Generation X which sought comfort in their online experience and therefore preferred classical aesthetics.

Abstract:
College administrators have been in the business of employing students as RAs or an equivalent position for many years. Over those many years, the students and the type of students hired for this position changed. Once again, it is time for a generational change. Gen Y students are currently entering at least their second year of college and are now eligible to apply for RA positions. The present study operated on the assumption that student motivations to seek the RA position may have changed over time as new generations of students have entered higher education. The perceived benefits of student employments in positions such as the RA position may shift with the change in the characteristics, needs, motivations, and desires of the students to seek employment. Researching employment motivations periodically to gauge shifts in reasons for seeking employment in the RA position may be helpful. The present study has significance for both future practice and future research in student affairs. In terms of future practice, three constituencies might be interested in the results of the study: Residence Life practitioners (RLPs), RAs, and student affairs practitioners. In the current study, there were several significant findings. First, Gen Y students sought the RA position for the following reasons (by order of importance), Helping Behaviors, Career Development, Financial Obligations, RA Cohesiveness, Personal Growth, and Desire for Power. Second, Gen Y females reported Helping Behaviors as an important reason for seeking the RA position significantly more often than did their male counterparts. Third, the research found no statistically significant differences in the reasons majority and minority Gen Y students sought the RA position. Finally, statistically significant differences were found when the reasons Gen X and Gen Y students sought the RA position were examined. Although the study examined only a limited number of Gen Y students, the results indicate that Residence Life professionals and RA staff selections teams may want to reconsider the way in which RA applicants are recruited.
Master of Arts

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare two visually opposite design techniques: skeuomorphic design, recognizable for its realistic presentation, and flat design, an abstract design option that has gained popularity in the last years. The two designs were compared using two generations of Internet users to find out what the preferences were for each generation. A knowledge gap was found in which design that would be the most beneficial to use for each generation. Methodology: To fulfill the purpose of the study, two methods were used; a literature study and an empirical study. The empirical study included experiments, interviews and questionnaires. The participants were contacted personally or via social media. All participants were in the age of 20-30 or 65+. Findings: Based on the collected literature and empirical evidence, it was concluded that the older generation of users might tend to prefer the skeuomorphic, realistic design online. Bright colors and a pedagogical style creates a good visual for elderly eyes and inexpert of using internet. The younger generation might tend to prefer the flat and abstract way of design online. A modern appeal with less clutter compared to the skeuomorphic style is considered beneficial. This opens up for further investigation. Implications: The empirical study included 20 people, who all participated in the experiment, interviews and answered questionnaires. The study groups consisted of 10 persons at the age span 20-30 years and 10 persons at the age span of 65+ years. Limitations: The study was only focused on two specific age groups with a small population found through convenient sampling. This means that in the future, the research could be conducted in a broader matter including more age groups and a larger population with a more specific sampling. The study's extent was affected by the time period in which it was executed. A longer period of time could have contributed to a more extensive study, perhaps with additional age groups and more participants in each group.

Abstract:
There is evidence to suggest that an impaired ability to process distressing and threatening emotional stimuli may result in a callous-unemotional (CU) and thrill-andadventure- seeking (TAS) personality. In this study we examined emotional processing in fifty community children, each with one parent, using the emotional pictures dot-probe task, which is a computerized task measuring attention to emotional pictures in the form of a facilitation score. The relationship between emotional processing, CU traits, and TAS were examined to determine whether individuals high on CU traits would also be more TAS, and show a lack of facilitation to emotional pictures. The results generally did not support study hypotheses; however, post-hoc analyses comparing children based on ethnicity found that Caucasian and minority children with CU traits show different and often opposite affective responses to emotional pictures, as well as different behavioral correlates to these traits.

Sweden is a country with an increasing foreign born population, where more and more people growing up with two parents born outside of Sweden. In this paper I examine the different labor market outcome for native Swedes and the six largest groups of second generation immigrants in the ages 30-39 years. The analysis is divided in two part where the first examining the level of gainful employment and the second the distribution in line of work. By using data from population register there was possible to perform detailed analysis. The gainfully employment rate are lower for the different groups of second generation immigrants. Unlike earlier studies regarding employment differences depending on parental origin, there are however not as distinct pattern of ethnic penalties. The result regarding line of work from the second part of the analysis show that some groups of second generation have a higher risk of being in less-qualified jobs after controlling for education, personal- and parental variables.

Abstract:
Despite increased awareness and consumer interest in green products and a pre-disposition to purchase more environmentally friendly products and services, we can often notice the lack of correspondence between consumers speech and their actions. Therefore, there is an inconsistency between attitudes and behavior, also called gap. It can be said that there is often an environmentally friendly pre-disposition (attitude) which does not often turn into action (behavior). Thus, although several studies have been conducted on consumer behavior, not a definitive explanation of the gap phenomenon and not a precise behavioral model for its compreehension was found so far. The present study aims to contribute to the literature for a deeper understanding of this phenomenon in a new light by analyzing the influential factors on the gap from the perspective of different generations. The study seeks to understand the main influential factors that contribute to increase or reduce this gap between attitude and environmentally conscious behavior that occur in members of Baby Boomers (BB) generation and Y generation, as well as their similarities and differences. For the development of the thesis thirty in-depth interviews were conducted with consumers residing in Rio de Janeiro; fifteen belonged to the Baby Boomers generation and fifteen to the Y generation. The analysis of the results used the Atlas ti software in order to facilitate interpretation and data organization. The results show the main influential factors on the gap on both generations (BB and Y), by analyzing five consumption activities: environmentally friendly products, energy, water, transportation and recycling / disposal. The results show the main similarities and differences between the behavior of the BB and the Y generations indicate greater concern and more conscious behavior by individuals of generation Y in terms of some consumption activities. At the end, a model of ecologically conscious behavior is proposed to better understand the phenomenon called gap. The main factors that contribute to increase or reduce this gap in both generations are highlighted.

Abstract:
The concept of the covenant between the generations was proposed by Pope John Paul II in the document “Evangelium vitae” paragraph 94 as a means of expressing love and solidarity for the elderly in the family and in the community against the growing treat of marginalisation and the acceptance of euthanasia. The aim of the thesis is to affirm the love and responsibility of adults for their parents and the parental generation in the community and to provide for a renewal of the bonds of love and solidarity that begin in the family between the generations, especially for its weak and vulnerable members such as the young and the elderly. The research brings to light the rich theology of the covenant between the generations based upon Karol Wojtyla’s key philosophical and theological ideas. Wojtyla’s perspective of the human person is covenantal, one of being-in-relationship that is founded on love of God and love of neighbour which begins in the family. Finally, in the thesis this is contrasted with Peter Singer’s utilitarian ethics which is based upon independence, personal preference, the minimisation of suffering, exclusion and the acceptance of euthanasia. The concept of the covenant between the generations can lead to an understanding of intergenerational solidarity beginning in the family. It has implications for policy development in healthcare, pastoral care, and ethics for healthcare professionals. Also, the concept can contribute to the promotion of intergenerational solidarity in politics and government legislation, in order to protect the human person, especially the elderly as a subject of rights and the just allocation of healthcare resources. The love and solidarity between the generations that the concept of the covenant between the generations promotes ensures that every human being is the subject and object of love beginning in the family.

Abstract:
In the early twentieth century, the urban setting of Rhodes was characterized by the coexistence ofOrthodox, Muslims, Jews and Catholics. In 1912, this Ottoman provincial center was occupied by Italy. After the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, the Italian military occupation changed to a civil administration, and Rhodes became a protectorate of the Fascist state. The historiography has dealt with this settingeither by focusing on one confessional community, or on governmental structures, tending to see the lateOttoman and the Italian administration as two mutually exclusive objects of analysis. This dissertationoffers a more inclusive approach through the combination of sources of different origin, type, andlanguage. Situated at the crossroad of social and cultural history, the narrative is centered on lifetrajectories of individuals belonging to all confessions and their encounter with institutions from Ottomanto Italian rule. Next to changes in institutions and practices of governance, several innovations related tospaces and forms of socialization are observable in this period. This dissertation investigates such doublelevel of change through a perspective inspired by studies in social sciences about generations and youth. In other words, the study focuses on practices of demarcation and circulation of resources between thegenerations of a family. Additionally, figurations expanding outside the boundaries of a family – schools, associations, parties, etc. – but reflecting such generational interplay are taken into account. Since formost families children socialized differently from their parents, local institutions were concerned aboutregulating this divergence. The corresponding communalization and statalization of resources are trendspersisting, with different modalities and motives, from the Ottoman to the Italian period. This processaimed at domesticating forms of sociability, and it relied on evoking “youth” as the object of thisdomestication. Thus, the term “youth” served the purpose of prescribing norms of behavior andlegitimizing institutional intervention in regulating the management of resources

Abstract:
This descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship between the measure of parental conjugality as perceived and experienced by children, the levels of subjective well-being and the satisfaction in romantic relationships displayed by these children, as well the variation of this relationship as a function of marital status of children (married, single and dating and singles who do not date). It was selected a convenient sample comprised by three independent groups: (1) two-year-old married people (Group A, N = 118, mean age 41.55, SD = 10.01); (2) single people who have dated over at least one year (Group B, N = 140, mean age 21.99, SD = 3.16); and (3) single people who had not been in a relationship since one year earlier (Group C, N = 116, mean age 21.52 , SD = 4.25). The total sample was non-probabilistic, summing 374 subjects. The following instruments were applied: Questionnaire for the Identification of Participant including a general question of satisfaction in current relationship (SR); Abipeme Criterion; Scale of Subjective Well-being (EBES) to assess positive affect (AP), negative affect (AN), satisfaction with life (SV) and well-being (BES); Satisfaction with Couple Relationships Factorial Scale (EFS-RC), which evaluates satisfaction in relation to physical attraction and sexuality (SAFS) and satisfaction with common interests and behaviors (SAIC) and the Parental Questionnaire Conjugality (QCP). The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 17.0 for Windows. After applying the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, it was run a statistical non-parametric correlation analysis (Spearman). The data were normalized for comparison between groups (ANOVA and ANCOVA) and multiple regression analyzes (stepwise method), considering the variables of satisfaction in the relationship (SR, SAFS, SAIC), along with subjective well-being (AP, AN, SV and BES) as dependent variables. The significance level was p < 0.05. In the total sample, the perception of parents\' marital (PCP) was significantly correlated with the SAFS (rho = .20; p < .001) and among married, with SAIC (rho = .22; p = .017), although associations are considered weak. For the group singles who date, no significant correlations with the PCP were found. The PCP was one of the predictors 22 Fabio Scorsolini-Comin of SAFS, SAIC, AP, AN, SV and BES, not rejecting hypotheses 1 and 3 of the study, according to which the PCP was correlated to the satisfaction of the children in their love relationships (H1) and their well-being (H3). The variables of satisfaction in the relationship are factors associated with the BES, not rejecting the hypothesis 2. The average levels of PCP were significantly different between single and married, not rejecting the hypothesis 4. Considering the age differences between groups and to control the possible effects of this variable, it was performed an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), considering age as a covariate. This analysis allowed to better understanding the role of the age variable in the PCP and the results support the interpretation that age would be a powerful developmental variable, which redeem accumulated experiences throughout life. It is suggested that additional studies should be conducted to support this initial conclusion. Married participants have considered parents\' marriage more negatively compared to single participants, possibly by evaluating in a less idealized way besides a more mature judgment of the parental relationship. It was concluded that perception of parental conjugality, as one of the variables that explain the subjective well-being as well as satisfaction in romantic relationships of their children, is a phenomenon that should be associated with marital quality and the establishment of positive interpersonal relationship, which could be a landmark for future research and intervention practices with couples.

Abstract:
Since the end of the Second World War, race relations and immigration have become major subjects of debate in the political, social and cultural life of Britain. The presence of immigrants from Britain's former colonies and the subsequent arrival of economic migrants and asylum seekers have triggered discussion of many issues, not least those surrounding difference, assimilation, diversity and identity (Gilroy 1993). It is these particular issues (and the tensions that they engender), often articulated through the depiction of mother-daughter relationships, which are dramatized in the work of contemporary Black British female playwrights such as Winsome Pinnock, Trish Cooke, Paulette Randall, Maya Chowdry, J. B. Rose, Tanika Gupta, Rukhsana Ahmad, Jackie Kay, Grace Dayley, Jacqueline Rudet, Maria Oshodi and Zindika2. My thesis is thus about the construction of mother-daughter relationships as presented in the work of these playwrights. It places particular emphasis on how mothers and daughters negotiate their relationships, positions and identities in the context of their respective experiences as first- and second- generation female migrants in Britain.

Abstract:
The co-branding strategies are gaining attention from research due to the special difficulties of implementing a collaborative strategy. Hence, this paper evaluates the effect of the co-branding strategy between a luxury brand and a high-street retailer on the luxury consumers’ brand equity of the luxury brand post-co-branding. Additionally, this study aims to find differences between the generation Y and X cohorts in terms of brand equity impact from co-branding. This effect was evaluated from three brand equity dimensions: perceived quality, brand image and brand loyalty. To conduct this research the data was collected at the department store Harvey Nichols in London where luxury fashion brands are sold. Later the data was analyzed with a regression, analysis and t-test. The consumers showed differences in terms of their attitude towards the co-branding strategies between a luxury fashion brand and a high-street retailer. In addition, this research found that all the brand equity dimensions suffer a direct influence from the attitude towards co-branding for all the consumers in the study. Direct influence means that the co-branding strategies may cause positive or negative spillover effects. Moreover, the results conclude that there is only a difference in the brand equity dimension of brand loyalty between the generation cohorts Y and X.

Abstract:
The study examines survey of grandparents caring for grandchildren. The main objective was to understand the considerations of the grandparents when they are assigned the task of caring for grandchildren whose parents work outside. For research we used the methodological approach of focus groups, preceded by the bibliographical survey on the topic. The theoretical content explores themes related to changes in contemporary family, the effects of intergenerational relationships and behavior of grandparents today and in Western societies. On this theme, the discussion about the thought of some authors argued reflections reached from the results obtained with the focus group meetings. Two focus groups were conducted with grandparents caring for grandchildren in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi. In the four meetings grandmothers participants reported and discussed issues and situations related to their experiences with their grandchildren, exchanging experiences and impressions. The data were processed through the content analysis and presented in categories drawn from the theoretical study. The results suggest the grandparents difficulties in dealing with the allocation of caring for grandchildren. At the end of the meetings the participants themselves come to the conclusion that each one must find the best way to be a grandmother in the contemporary, combining personal development and good family relationships. It was observed in groups of grandmothers difficulties in dealing with this topic in social relations. It was evident that in countries like Brazil there is no public policy sufficient to drive the contemporary changes in family group. Also notable was that providing a focus group to grandparents caring for grandchildren has allowed, in addition to data collection, the possibility of being a technical resource available to grandparents. It was evident that this technique helped the participants to express their opinions and encouraged self-reflection among them. Finally, the study indicates the need to provide grandparents caring for grandchildren, through public policies and social actions, which conditions they may have an interaction with their grandchildren in a more playful, based on values that their own grandparents consider paramount in the relationship with the children.

Ruby, Mahera. "Family jigsaws : how intergenerational relationships between grandparents, parents, and children impact on the learning that takes place between the generations, and how this contributes to the child's learning experiences at home and at school." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/11745/.

Abstract:
This study investigated the intergenerational relationships between grandparents, parents and children from Bangladeshi British families in East London, and the impact these relationships had on the learning that took place between the generations. The study also investigated how this contributed to the child's learning experiences at home and at school. I collected data within an ethnographic framework using participant observation, interviews, questionnaires and video recordings. Through an ethnographic approach and an approach to analysis which I refer to as an ‘analysis of verbal and non-verbal interactions’ I was able to analyze the data from the four children, their grandmothers, mothers and teachers who participated in the study. The analysis highlights the complexities of their interactions and the way learning took place as each child completed a puzzle with the help of their mother, grandmother or teacher. The study reveals how the children negotiated their way through the different intergenerational interactions to complete the puzzle activities, bringing together the jigsaw pieces of their learner identities to construct their ability to be ‘Flexible Learners’ as a whole. I argue that children consciously adapt their learning styles depending on the adult they are interacting with and the context in which that learning experience takes place. I emphasize that their ability to do this and the contribution of the grandparents to this role are not adequately acknowledged at present. There is also evidence that participants bring their ‘funds of knowledge’ (Gonzalez et al, 2005) to the way in which they think learning should take place, and this enables the child to develop what I refer to as ‘learner flexibilities’ which is a skill that needs recognition within families and schools in order to improve children’s educational and cultural experiences.

Klicker, Karl D. "The edifice complex : a study of the causes and effects of conflict between generations of marines, and of cultural changes in the United States Marine Corps." Virtual Press, 1990. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/720398.

Full text
Abstract:
The title of The Edifice Complex presents two metaphors which combine to form the focus of this study's research. The first of these refers to the Oedipus Complex of Freudian psychology: metaphorically, Marine recruits fall in love with the folklore of the Marine Corps they wish to join, yet unwittingly change that Corps over time, thus figuratively killing the older generations of Marines--their forefathers in uniform. In the second metaphor, the edifice is the structure of informal folklore and recorded history; the complex is the rites of passage or maze traversed in time by Marines. As Marines are indoctrinated in the Marine Corps' culture, they internalize the meanings of the edifice's building blocks: its symbols, rituals and myths. Bit by bit, generations of Marines individually and collectively alter the shape of the metaphorical maze and change the meanings of some elements of folklore. The purpose of the study was to analyze the causes and effects of cultural change affecting Marines and the Marine Corps from the mid-1950s to the mid1980s. Using ethnographic field methods and content analysis, the researcher investigated internal and external planned and unplanned changes in the Marine Corps. Cultural data was collected during 1984 and 1985 from print, motion picture and other media, and through interviews with Marine infantrymen, recruiters, journalists, drill instructors, historians, musicians and others, in several cultural settings. The study focused on the cultural reality of primarily male, enlisted Marines. Findings support the working hypothesis that folklore is a behavior-shaping tool which the Marine Corps effectively uses to control the behavior of Marines. Findings reveal that cultural changes have allowed or caused some Marines to value the Marine Corps materially as a source of valuable competencies and material rewards rather than professionally or patriotically as the calling of the profession of arms. Conclusions of The Edifice Complex parallel conclusions in organizational change theory, in that changes in the symbolic realm of the organization's culture are most difficult to change but have significant impact upon members of the organization. Findings and conclusions are also mutually supported in the educational, social and behavioral psychologies.

This is a qualitative study that used the clinical method. We interviewed four mothers whose children were treated by the researcher, cases in which there was detected problems or changes in mother-child bond. Data collection occurred through interviews in the form of "History of Life." The data analysis was performed by systematic reading of the interviews and understanding the dynamics of utterances, from which each cases described by categories. The discussion of the cases was based on psychoanalytic theory and concepts of psychic transmission between generations. The work also presents a historical overview about motherhood. The results showed that motherhood has experiences that tare common to mothers interviewed, however own gains settings from the life story of each one. The establishment of an affective bond between mother and child health arises as a result of numerous factors, among which the existence, for the mother of the parental affection in his childhood, a harmonious marital relationship, a pregnancy with a predominance of positive experiences and the ability to reframing of conflicts, which avoids the projection of pathological feature sin the child, preventing changes in the bond with the same. As concluding remarks, stressed the need to develop programs of psychological support during and after pregnancy, both mother and baby to the father, to strengthen family bonds.

Abstract:
This study deals with couples that remain married for many years. The general objective of this dissertation is to study the psychical transmission between generations and its interference in the constitution and maintenance of the marital bond. The purpose is to understand the influence couples receive from their originating families and how it interfered with the possibility of the couple to develop their own marital identity, focusing on both conscious and unconscious influences, dealing with the intergenerational and the transgenerational mechanisms of psychical transmission in the construction and maintenance of the marital bond. The theoretical reference is based on Freud; specifically, the theoretical formulations of René Kaës. The method used was the clinical-qualitative, proposed by Turato (2003). The research was performed with two couples, married for 20 to 30 years and were not participating in therapeutic treatment. Data was obtained through a semi-open interview with the couple, and the application of cards 2, 4, 7RH, 7MF, 19, and 16 of the Thematic Apperception Test. Based on the collected material, it became evident the decline of the male persona in the various generations of the couples originating families and the psychical transgenerational transmission of male fragility. The main conclusions indicate the mental transgenerational legacy was a determinant in the marriage constitution of the studied couples, making the establishment of their own marital and family identity difficult.

Abstract:
Among the concerns and studies on the aging process, there is an area that has been getting much attention, viz. the “femininization of poverty.” Women are living longer and consequently have a higher life expectancy. Estimates indicate that the female senior population will continue to grow in the future and the male senior population will undergo a relative decline. These indices not only reveal the existence of a larger number of women in old age, but also lead us to reflect on the need to get to know and to take into account the demands of this growing population segment. This research project was developed in a context of urban families in a low income neighborhood (“Vila Fátima”) of the city of Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Its main goal was to analyze the roles that senior women of that neighborhood are playing in their families in the present. The secondary goals were to identify the socio-economic profile of the families living in “Vila Fátima”, to analyze the family structure and the families’ social support network and to understand the senior women’s perception of themselves within their families and community. The study’s participants were nine women aged 66 to 93 who live in that neighborhood and are members of the Senior Citizens’ Group of the Extension Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. The study has a qualitative and ethnographic character and used the following data collection tools: interviews with open-ended questions (conducted at the participants’ homes), that were recorded and then transcribed; a field diary and notes on the Senior Citizens’ Group. The research project showed that the process of chronic illness, imprisonment or early loss of the spouse, either because of death or separation, led seven out of the nine interviewed women to constitute family units made up of mother and children and to become providers of their homes. Neighbors, local day care centers and the health care station are their social support network in the community. As they grew older, some of them continued to live in that form of family unit and others constituted family units made up of mother, children and grandchildren. They continued to play a central role in the functioning and support of their families. Many of the senior women took on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their children are their main source of social support today. Co-residence is common phenomenon in this context. It has led to an increase in the schooling rate, a reduction of child labor and the possibility of intensive and prolonged exchanges between the generations. The exchange of affection, open dialog with grandchildren and their availability as resource persons are outstanding features in the senior women’s utterances. The affective relationship with the younger generations enables the elderly to critically reread their life stories and to construct a new meaning in life.

Abstract:
Intro: The aerospace industry as a whole is facing a challenge with the upcoming retirement of the baby boomer generation. The generation that helped bring a nation together during uncertain times, and grow the US economy to the goliath it has become today, is the same generation that could help unravel the aerospace industry they were so pivotal in creating. The large departure of the senior workforce is inevitable yet so many Aerospace companies do not fully understand the magnitude of this phenomenon. However, many companies see this shortcoming and are taking actions to mitigate risk. These mitigation factors generally have been very reactive and not preventative enough. A study was initiated in hopes of looking at the breadth of the issue around the industry, how companies are handling the issue, what the potential impacts are to a company and to the industry, as well as to try and find a solution to the problem through the use of knowledge management. Results: During the course of the study a survey was conducted to poll users within the industry about their experiences regarding the aging workforce, mentorships, and how they learn as well as what knowledge management techniques they believe would be helpful in transferring knowledge between people. The results of the survey paralleled indications that aerospace retirements are a very real concern for companies as well as employees. Many workers in the industry feel that their workplace is unequally balanced amongst the age groups, featuring many employees on each end of the spectrum from very old employees to very young employees without having a good balance of employees between the two age groups. Furthermore, many workers believe that the young employees in their work groups do not contribute or have the necessary technical knowledge to take over for their senior workforce on the verge of retirement. These workers believe that this is due to many reasons, especially the lack of a real structured program for transferring knowledge between generations within the workforce. The survey results address how the individual participants learn, as well as training techniques they feel are most effective, were then combined with knowledge management best practices to develop a proposed solution for how to effectively transfer information from older employees to younger employees in a timely manner. The proposed solution combines a backbone software system which is integrated with external hardware offerings to offer companies a fully functional linked system called KMinfoshare. KMinfoshare will offer companies a way to easily and effectively transfer information by utilizing audio, video, and text files integrated together for seamless linking and quick referencing. A full description of KMinfoshare is presented along with an extensive business case outlining the necessary funding needed to create the KMinfoshare software, a start-up company, and the marketing campaign needed to begin penetrating the market. The business case will also focus on pricing of the software as well as returns on investment for the companies looking to purchase KMinfoshare and the forecasts for yearly income when the software would become available for purchase. A process flow was then developed for KMinfoshare to describe how a company would implement the software system and how a junior engineer direct out of college would prosper by using the software system. In addition to the descriptions of the product details and the process flow for the company's implementation, a partial systems architecture is presented for KMinfoshare using the DODAF system. The views described for the software will give an overarching perspective on how the software will work and interact with all the other modules in the KMinfoshare system as well as all the hardware that will be used to populate the systems database with the pertinent information. A sample website was also created to show what the finished KMinfoshare software interface might look like as well as show some of the key capabilities of how the software system will work. A sample product website was also created to show how the KMinfoshare software could be marketed. All of these details are presented in an attempt to showcase the issues of the upcoming retirements as well as provide an integrated solution for the knowledge drain issue that the industry is currently facing.

Abstract:
It was the objective of this research to analyze the processes of resilience in black women, taking into consideration the influences in content deriving from psychological transmission (black female relatives, descendants, ascendants, ancestors), from the symbolisms associated with black women, and from the meaning deriving from affiliation in black expressions (cultural, political, intellectual, religious). The methodology for the research included interviewing (with strategy with scenes) with four black women from different generations in the same family. The data collected went through content analysis, with the collaboration of the interviewees. The research also took into consideration the interest and demand for potential for health, approaching the problem focused on the points of resolutions and strengthening. It gives emphasis to the prevention, overcoming, personal growth and potentials. This research also goes beyond the main or only concern on adversities and on causing a negative impression impacts. It was chosen a posture at a widening of the view considered in the analysis of the phenomenon, combining individual, social and historical contexts of the problem. Such attitude is tuned to the followed theories, going through psychoanalysis, social psychoanalysis, psychoanalysis of family bonds, social psychology, afro-centered psychology, among others, including race and genre specially and the psychosocial approach. The dissertation begins with the introduction, together with justifications, of the political and epistemological framework and the description to the researcher and the other chapters. Chapter two approaches the problem of the research, its general and specific objectives. The third chapter refers to black women, with a profile (historical, present context and the health of the black population in the first item, and about black women on the second) and psychology and race relations (from a general view and with a race profile). In chapter four, resilience is divided into definitions and a critical discussion. Chapter five, resilience in black women and its influences, including the items psychological transmission, symbolisms associated with black women, meanings resulting from affiliation to a black expression, resilience in black population and resilience in black women. In chapter six, the methodology: collaborators, tools, procedures, ethical care and data analysis. The seventh chapter is dedicated to the results and discussions, with categories for the analysis. In the first category, \"Hurts to the heart\", experiences of facing adversities and exposure to vulnerabilities are put together, discussing the ill effects of those situations that go from organic compromising, through psychosocial up to familiar and affective relations. \"From the ancestors\" covers the heritage passed on by black women, by psychological transmission and resulting from the symbolism. The third category, \"On traditions\", shows and analyzes stories related to affiliation to the black expressions, where it is possible to identify points of coherence or discrepancy in relation to the theoretical aspects regarding the idea of putting down roots and affiliations, and discussing its influence on boosting the process of resilience, through the reconciliation with their origins, getting more awareness of their history, giving a new meaning to their self image, re-orientation for the resistance and potentialization of the resilience. The fourth category Raise themselves black women warriors illustrates and analyzes the clash and overcoming. The fifth category, \"From resistance to resilience\", studies the influence of the aspects above on the potentialization of resilience. It questions about how resistance can encourage resilience, means, costs and effects. Once the proposed goals be achieved, the eight and last chapter brings about lessons learnt and recommendations. Then, the references and the annexed terms of acceptance free and elucidated are presented, as well as the questionnaire for social classification and the list of questions for the interviews

Abstract:
The current social link mutation raises multiple issues about its impact on the subjectivity processes. Considering this we studied identity’s construction of children and teenagers, and in particular oedipal problematic and connected questions: identifications, oedipal promise and temporality. Using projective tests (drawings and « Pattenoire Test ») these processeswere investigated among 5-15 years old French children. Peer figure appeared in our results as a main identification reference and relationship with parents keeps archaic pre-oedipal nature. This horizontal link complicates the access to the difference between the generations and to the psychical temporality as well. Thus Oedipus complex « bug » troubles the development of the «transitional» capacity which gives access to the creativity. Thisphenomenon is especially evident at the teenage, when subject has now to seek for new arrangements to get out of the temporality suspended to the relationship with parents in the imaginary register

Abstract:
Magister Commercii - MCom
Diversity management in South Africa, post 1994, has increasingly become a focal area when considering strategic human resource issues in the corporate environment. To date "traditional" diversity topics have largely centered around the differences in employees' race, culture, gender, language and disability status, and scores of academic and management text has been produced in this regard since the birth of democracy in this country, sixteen years ago. Whilst change on the political front has been vanguard, resultant societal change has largely been ignored by corporate South Africa. The era of equal opportunity has led to changes in income levels, consumer buying power and demographics and has paved the way for a new breed of human capital in the workplace. One particular breed, having been raised in the New South Africa, has shared experiences and backgrounds which are completely different to that of their parents and their grandparents. Their common location in history has dramatically shaped their belief systems and their expectations of life in general, with work life being a major facet thereof. These generational differences has resulted in tensions in the workplace where it has become evident that employees of varying ages are finding it difficult to 'speak the same language'. The concept of generational diversity has its roots in Generational theory, the underlying hypothesis on which this study rests. This hypothesis, as postulated by American researchers, Strauss and Howe (1993), states that every generation has a common set of beliefs and behaviours, a common location in history and a common perceived membership. These in turn shape the generational group's core values and view on life and work. Authors such as Zemke, Raines & Filipczak (2000), Kupperschmidt (2000), and Lancaster & Stillman (2003) point out that understanding the differences that exist between employees of varying ages can potentially enhance organizational culture, increase productivity and minimize conflict. However, very little academic research on this topic has been undertaken in the South African context, and it is against this backdrop that this exploratory study endeavoured to test the hypothesis in a local context. The study surveyed a national group of employees of varying ages, who work for a large financial services organization, headquartered in the Western Cape. The major aim was to develop a hierarchy of work values, suggesting a relative ranking and ordering of important workplace attributes, per generational cohort to either support or disprove the hypothesis.

It s main objective was to identify and understand the affection patterns passed through family generations in it s speeches, narratives and member s memories troughs systemic theory. A qualitative research was made with a case study and a semi-structured interview in which the speeches of the family members (three families) were analyzed through verbal and non-verbal communication during their life span. In the study with the families, it was considered the aspects related to the establishment of the affective values within the family, gender roles and culture. The conflicts that emerge from the fear of being separated from people, relational attachments and how it can be lived with less distress, unpleasantly feelings an it s expressions with an enormous emotional weight. In practice, during day-by-day routines, there is an intention to absorb new knowledge, chance communication attitudes, and review the construction of affectivity, looking for the comprehension of places and conflicted values found in the partnership lived by different generations. This study demonstrated that patterns of affection are formed and transmitted through family generations, and the impossibility to express and talk about it s feelings at the same time and importance is a obstacle in the construction of better family relations. To deal with pleasure and unpleasant situations, closeness to people, different kinds of attachments, the family members bonds can be shaken, showing the attachment s intensity. It was also clear the importance of the communication signs linked to the relational area, even with the families considered very affective and expressive of its feelings. Accordingly, the importance to have an intergerational look in the study of the feelings of affection transmitted inside the same family reveals important values in the family relationships patterns that are priceless to the human being and better family relationships

To understand this accessed reality it used the Historical-Cultural Theory from Vygotsky as theoretical outline. The theoretical categories focused on this thesis are gender, violence, family, childhood, adolescence, youth, subjectivity, consciousness and repetition. The methodological tool used to access the focused reality from the mothers looking on their daughters victims of interfamilial sexual abuse was the Speech Analysis proposed by Bakhtin. Was used an interview screenplay which related about the interfamilial sexual abuse of their daughters and then about the knowledge of other victimization histories, searching for knowing the women who also had victimization history through sexual abuse on their childhood or adolescence, as well as the subjectivities which emerge from these experiences. Following, it was constituted an interview corpus and then, the analysis proceeded. The Bakthin Speech Analysis elements analyzed on the participants speeches were dialogism, discursive genders, polyphony and statements. The participants speeches were categorized as a) Victimized mother: the participants speech about the interfamilial child-youth sexual abuse suffered by her daughter; b) Victimized woman: the speech about interfamilial child-youth sexual abuse the participants suffered; c) The repetition sense of feminine interfamilial child-youth sexual abuse between generations from mothers voice. Through participants speech can be perceived constituted subjects from the interfamilial sexual abuse repetition experiences between generations, hers and the daughter s. They are women, mothers and victims who as confronted with their daughters sexual abuse reality; they suffer as women, who feel themselves doubly victimized for the fact of realizing the repetition between generations in their family of the male dominance and the interfamilial sexual abuse. Furthermore, the fact of having the knowledge of the interfamilial sexual abuse of their daughters served as a reflection for the memory of their own interfamilial sexual abuse suffered on their childhood, making them relive the experience from the past and to emerge the child-youth interfamilial sexual abuse repetition between generations reflected in the fact that the mother and daughter had been abused on their childhood, having the same level of affinity with the abuser, repeating behaviors which their mothers had at the time of their victimization in the childhood, of seeing the repeated behavior on their daughters against the victimization and decisions as not to reveal to nobody the abuse.

Darbe analizuojamas tarpukario Lietuvos, t.y., I respublikos katalikiškosios visuomenės senosios - jaunosios kartų visuomenininkų bei politikų konfliktas, kuris atspindėjo to meto lietuvių visuomenės politinio brendimo evoliuciją. IV-ojo dešimtmečio pradžioje, baigę Vakarų Europos universitetus į Lietuvą grįžo nauja katalikų intelektualų banga. Pastarieji remdamiesi modernia Vakarų tradicija svarstė Lietuvos santvarkos tobulinimo projektus. A. Smetonos autoritarizmo metais nesant galimybių aktyviai veikti politinėje opozicijoje, pastarieji pradėjo Lietuvos modernizacijos planus skelbdami kultūros ir viešojo gyvenimo lituanizaciją. The theoretical reference used to understand and analyze the data produced was based mainly on Freirean categories and on authors who research the profiles of the Youth and Adult Education. The field study had a qualitative approach and was developed through a case study in a school unit that specifically offers the Youth and Adult Education. The procedures used were semi-structured interviews with teachers, students, management team and pedagogical guides. The elements identified, from the answers of the different subjects and in the light of the Freirean categories, were analyzed and compared with the documents produced by the Municipal Department of Education of São Bernardo do Campo. We highlight the factors that colaborate for a school that engages itself to work with a critical-liberating proposal in order to meet the circumstances of the EJA’s intergenerational classrooms. This is a qualitative study based on interviews with elderly and on data collected from letters written by students of adult education (Education for Youths and Adults) with ages ranging from 18 to 72 years in literacy process and the regular education children aged between 8 and 10 years who attended one of the units of the network SESI-SP - Social Service Industry of São Paulo. The exchange of letters between these students occurred during the years 2008 and 2009. The matters covered in the letters started several discussions, and to facilitate understanding, in this study they are presented in the form of topics such as religion, dreams, the right words, the world of work and retirement, the otherness, the pictographic communication, the communication by symbols and the exchange of glances, all equally compelling, because they caused reflections by both the children and the elderly. The analysis of the data makes it possible to determine the characteristics of the subjects involved and indicates that the exchange of letters promotes interaction among students, as well as the process of changing attitudes and building ethical values that are very important in school, family and social life of both the elderly and the participating children. The changes through these experiences can provide or facilitate a healthier coexistence between different generations within the school and the various social spaces of everyday life. These findings indicate the importance of interdisciplinary studies with focus on the question of the relationship between generations

This research analyzed the meanings and values, expectations, experiences and educational practices of successive generations (three women and their mothers) concerning about the relationship between school and family, taking into account the social mobility aspirations of the researched people, through each individual’s life course analysis. This study discusses education in human development perspective, characterized by multidimensionality attributed to human emancipation process in order to overcome the conditions of vulnerabilities present in poverty. This research also discusses some life course events with an emphasis on education, marital, maternity and work: the admissions, discontinuities and readmissions of the women interviewed in schools, as well as the role played in families and in society. The survey was conducted in a municipal public school of Ensino Fundamental I, on the outskirts of Salvador, in 2015, taking as criteria the selection of three families within which at least two generations of women have studied and, currently, whose children (third generation) are effectively enrolled. The methodological approach used was qualitative, based on case studies, by means of the technique of life stories, using as a tool for data collection a field diary and interviews, in addition to observations in loco. This longitudinal study brought together researcher and researched in specific place and time and could notice variations and characteristics developed in these subjects through the education process, as well as the changes in families and in society that emerged in this process. The main results show the recognition of female leadership in these three cases, even with a presence of a man in two of them. Teen pregnancy of these mothers was identified as the most important factor for school leavers, despite all support given by their mothers. However, their children are currently attending school, living in a context of eradication of child labor and was admitted in school at the right and stay there, despite of a few periods of absence. These families recognize as major advances the acquisition of books in general, schoolbooks and uniforms, today provided by educational policies. It’s evident how much mothers valorize and invest in children’s study, which goes against the idea that poor families do not value education. Instead, the research concludes that families use the studies as a basis for investing their resources and build high expectations of rise and access to new opportunities in work and social life, despite the need for subsistence and observed vulnerabilities. However, some aspects related to the flexibility and communication between school officials and families, directly related to the school bylaws standards, emerge as complains by the respondents, who argue they have become obstacles to family participation in the educational community, through which opportunities realization of future projects for social mobility could be realized.

The arrival of 4G technology takes place simultaneously with the technology we have today (2G and 3G). In order to answer these questions, it is necessary to search predicting if there is possibility of failure in the future. And that s how we explain interference, which is a problem that always exists and precludes good quality of service. In Brazil there is discussion about the use of 2.5 GHz frequency for 4G to better meet the users’needs. This will happened if in some way we use other frequencies as the case of 900 MHz band which is considered a hard fought in Europe. There are carriers that have begun to experiment with this band, and this makes us think that in any way we will live with different technologies in the same band. Thus, this work presents a simulation study of several cases of interference, in which each will affect the performance of 4G systems coexisting with older systems.

The phenomenon of delayed home-leaving can be understood as a new family structure that responds to the instability of the current context. The contemporary youth cope with the lack of security in their professional and emotional lives, and find support in family life. Thus, they face the contrast between the helplessness of the outside world and the comfort of the family home, since contemporary families tend to have an open dialogue. This study aims to investigate the motivations, obstacles, professional life, emotional life, and plans for the future of young adults living with their parents. To this end, we turned to the fields of psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology and history. Qualitative method and semi-structured interview were used, which included relevant issues concerning the phenomenon of delayed home-leaving. The subjects of our study were 8 middle class adults living with their parents in Rio de Janeiro, between the ages of 26 and 35. We found that the subjects highlight the economic issues, organization, practicality, dialogue, and support as advantages of living with their parents. As disadvantages, they point out the lack of privacy, and feeling that they do not belong to the family home. Their professional lives are characterized by short-term employment and fear of the future. However, some subjects seek public employment to ensure a more stable life. Yet, the love life of interviewees is characterized primarily by the frailty of bonds. The instability of our time produces insecurity and fear in the subjects. We verified that given this reality, it is common for young adults to avoid making plans for the future in order to protect themselves from potential frustrations.
