Skinner, Susan Margaret. "A history of the Cornish male voice choir : the relationship between music, place and culture." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2894.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis documents and examines the history of Cornish male voice choirs from their origins in the late nineteenth century through to the present day. The evolution of the choirs has hitherto been charted largely through scattered oral testimonies, whereas this work traces the rise, decline and resurgence of the male choral tradition by drawing from a range of primary sources, including newspapers and repertoire in addition to oral history. The thesis is organised chronologically and the main chapters chart the development of Cornish male voice choirs from the Methodist point of origin, to the subsequent expansion of the male choral movement between the wars and thereafter its seeming atrophy. The opening two chapters focus on the background and emergence of the choirs from c.1820 to 1918. The interwar period is covered in three diverse but linked chapters, assessing the socio-economic context, musicological influences and the importance of geographic locality or ‘place’. The impact of the Second World War on the choirs is examined in Chapter Six. The following chapter traces how the choirs remained vibrant in the face of encroaching secularisation during the 1950s and 1960s, and the final chapter assesses the detrimental effects for the choirs of changed musical behaviours and generational issues in the late twentieth century choir. Four key themes which run throughout the chapters are the influence of Methodism, its teachings and choral hymnody; the significance of repertoire and musical directorship; the importance of the male demographic within the local economy; and secularisation and mass popular culture. The connecting thread of the argument for the thesis as a whole is that male voice choirs both reflect and help shape Cornish identity. As will be seen, identity is a fluid, multi-layered concept, but analysis of the changing role and influence of male voice choirs contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between music, place and culture.

The children are sensible to differences, to listen and respect it, to loving listening between us and they are willing to approach the border and if is necessary to transgress it, and try to be in between voces (ês) (voces of voice in Spanish and vocês of us in Portuguese). Everything refers to a displacement of time and space in which the other doesn’t need to be present for the construction of identity / otherness in thath symbolic territory. The alterity is a dimension of simultaneity in time, it is a responsive act which, doesn’t have a unique hero and where polyphony is achieved between the different voces and between others (between voces (ês)). The speech doesn’t have only function communication, it defines the individual and reelaborates it, leading him to be an inhabitant of a symbolic territory. Roberts, Jason L. "Place Perception, Cognitive Maps, and Mass Media: The Interrelationship Between Visual Popular Culture and Regional Mental Mapping." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33020.

Full text
Abstract:
There can be little dispute that todayâ s society makes extensive use of mass media. Movies, television, and radio are far more prominent today than ten years ago, both locally and globally. We rely on these forms of communication for news and information and entertainment and recreation. New technologies increase our access and our dependence on mass media. In fact, in the U.S. the average person spends 40 percent of their time attending to television at some level (Adams, 1992). Adams then goes on to say that culture and television are clearly involved in reciprocal relations: television affects culture, but culture also affects television (Adams, 1992). It should come as no surprise, therefore, that generational differences in recreation are far more prominent today than they were twenty years ago. Indeed, we are a passive society dependent upon technology and the creativity of others for pleasure. The Internet and television of today have replaced the bicycle and board games of yesterday in terms of babysitting the young for hours on end. Almost all major types of entertainment come from the viewing of some sort of screen or monitor, with children spending vast amounts of time engaging in these passive activities. By the age of sixteen, a contemporary child has probably spent more time watching television than he/she has attending school or doing chores. However, entertainment is only one use for mass media. For example, the term â Information Ageâ refers to much more than recreation. Large quantities of information can be acquired through these forms of transmission. Unfortunately, false representations are sometimes the goal of those who produce these data media. In addition to the deliberate distortion of truths, those who consume mass media obtain many falsities inadvertently. A perfect example of this is stereotyping. All too often, oneâ s only exposure to certain regions and/or peoples is obtained through television and movies. Instead of becoming familiar with specific facts about cultures, conclusions are drawn based upon viewing and hearing popular culture material. Stereotypes of cultural groups create myths about their respective geographic regions and vice-versa. We are well aware of these myths (for example, the idea that all Southerners are dumb) but what is their link to place perception? How are mental constructs of regions related to cultural stereotypes? How have popular culture and mass media affected stereotypes?<br>Master of Science

Davis, Nathan E. "Looking more deeply into the Link between Art and Place within the Salish Tribal Culture of Northwest Montana." The University of Montana, 2008. http://etd.lib.umt.edu/theses/available/etd-05302008-172318/.

Full text
Abstract:
In northwest Montana, there exists a rich tribal culture and vibrant physical environment. The Salish tribal culture that exists in this environment holds an immense knowledge of the landscape that surrounds it, and the Salish people are intimately tied to this place. They have unique and fascinating culturally informed ways of looking at and interpreting the landscape. It is evident in their artistic traditions and expressions, both in the past and in the present. This research examines the importance of local knowledge in indigenous communities. The intent of this research is to identify links between Salish art and sense of place. The purpose of this research is to develop a curriculum guide that addresses the role art plays in establishing and expressing a sense of authentic human attachment and true belonging in a special or unique place. The curriculum guide will focus upon the artistic traditions and expressions of the interior Salish tribes of northwestern Montanas Flathead Indian Reservation. This study will take a particular interest in exploring how art has changed and how Native artists creatively re-imagine themselves in order to reclaim traditional strength and voice. There will be a focus on the Indian Education for All Laws and Policies, giving teachers an understanding of the policies and laws that affect all people in Montana. The basic research question being asked is: What is the relationship between Salish artistic expressions and sense of place? To answer this question we must develop a good understanding of art, sense of place, and the relationship between art and sense of place. Art and place both have a past, present, and future. The recognition of beauty is found not only in art but also in sense of place. Place is a center of meaning and the same can be said of art. Place and art are both different things to different people. Art and place can be animated, but both express only what their animators enable them to say. Both place and art can only give back to one equally as much as the amount of thought, feeling, and attention which one has devoted to them. Art, as well as place, is animated by the people who attend to it. So, even in total stillness, places or works of art can speak to one. People have relationships with places. These relationships are expressed in numerous ways. Some are expressed through political ritual, religious ceremonies, myth, prayer, music, dance, and architecture. Art can be the place where the tangible and the mythical become the same. Through artistic traditions and expressions conducted daily, monthly, seasonally, or annually, places and their meanings are continually rewoven into the fabric of our life. Art and place both change, while at the same time stay the same.

Friesen, Jonathan Jared. "BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE: URBANORMATIVITY AND RURAL LOCATED PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/sociology_etds/41.

Full text
Abstract:
As urban areas have come to increasing dominate the social landscape, rurality is often defined in negative ways such as being backwards, simple, or even deviant. Urbanormativity is a theoretical approach developed to capture the normative and structural impacts and implications of privileging the urban. The result is not only the construction of urban as correct and positive and rurality as abnormal and backwards, the cultural ideology impacts the structural flow of resources which negatively impacts and results in a marginalization of rural areas. The primary question motivating this research is how does urbanormativity shape the interactions between rural towns and private institutions of higher education located in these towns? In particular, this research examines how the rural anti-idyll and idyll concretize the urbanormative cultural ideology in a local context. Additionally, this research investigates how everyday processes of inequality are enacted adding complexity to how urbanormativity plays out in a particular setting. While much research has examined the role of higher education in urban areas, very little research has examined private higher education in rural places. Still, rural located higher education is important for rural locales as an employer, as a gathering place, as a source of job skills training, and for economic development. Emplacing rural higher education in its respective locale is also important because as an institution, rural located higher education is one mechanism through which rural localities are integrated into larger urban-focused normative and structural systems. Using a case study, this research examined the effects of urbanormativity on local constructions of rurality and the impacts for both the rural locale and the rural located private higher educational institution. In particular, urbanormative cultural ideology played out in concrete ways for both local residents and for faculty and staff of the local private university as they explained the anti-idyllic and idyllic aspects of the local context. These conceptualizations of rurality and their place within the local context hold concrete implications for decision making by residents, those employed by the institution, and the institution itself. Viewed within urbanormativity as an institution that integrates the locale with the larger society and system, this research found that the impact and implications of urbanormativity resulted in challenges including employee and student recruiting and retention as well as becoming a regional university rather than a local college placing both the local community and the private university between a rock and a hard place.

Prentiss, Apryl D. "For the Love of God?! Is there a place for Gay Christians between Faith and Fundamentalism?" VCU Scholars Compass, 2010. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/88.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing from observation, autoethnography, ethnographic research and audio-taped interviews, this thesis explores the complicated and emotionally charged relationship between homosexuality and Christianity. The current culture war being waged in the media between the Religious Right and members of the LGBT community often results in the isolation and rejection of those who would define themselves as gay Christians. This thesis explores the role of the Bible as it informs and catalyzes this war and other foundational beliefs used as weapons in this rhetorical conflict. Additionally, this thesis analyzes the current battle between the church and the social movement for change in light of the historical battles fought over similar movements. The rhetoric of Christianity, specifically Fundamentalist rhetoric, has been emphatically defended and then dramatically changed in every such battle. Is this a possible resolution for today’s current battle? The thesis explores the historical basis and current application of rhetorical effects on this conflict through the author’s insight as a veteran of both worlds, interviews with major players in the battle such as Randy Thomas and Kristin Tremba of Exodus International and interviews with people who step on the battlefield everyday as pastors, congregants or observers in the fight. With each interview or rhetorical analysis, the viability of dialogue between these two groups is questioned and investigated.

Abstract:
Thesis: M. Arch., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2017.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 148-149).<br>In a fast-forwarded Brooklyn, the over-building of luxury towers leads to a real estate bubble burst. Waterfront rents stagnate, and entire buildings sit abandoned. In a city defined by divisions, a social movement emerges. An architect and her band of social subversives descend on an empty tower. They begin altering their living spaces with deviant acts of connection. United by an opposition to divisions, they wage a war on the party wall. The ideology of the existing plan is at odds with the ideology of its occupants. The plan relies on privacy and separation, leaving social programs near the street and far from everyday living spaces. The social subversives are wary of the intolerance produced by the echo chambers of their Twitter feeds and believe that home can be a space of resistance to neo-tribalism, if daily ritual is interrupted by interactions with the other. Their manifesto reads, "We aim to reveal, to conceal, to upend the everyday through a new set of architectural operations." The operations take on the redundancies of side-by-side private programs and elicit new types of social interaction. An opening in the wall above a dining room table, for example, allows neighbors to momentarily become company for a meal. The manipulation of the interior imbues the minutiae of domestic life with unexpected social forms. Over time, as markets shift and members of the group move on and out, the afterlives of these interventions vary. Some new neighbors accept them as idiosyncrasies of the city's housing stock. Most fight to undo them, but the acts have already been committed. However short-lived, they have already produced their intended effect, a disruption of the everyday.<br>by Kristina E. Abstract:
This dissertation is an Investigation into the Tuareg involvement in violent conflict in the Sahara and the Sahel of North Africa from a sociological psychological perspective of unmet human needs. The research begins by establishing the structure and texture of the sociological, psychological, and emotional life patterns of their existence when not involved in violent conflict. This is followed by an examination of the pathology of Tuareg social structures that are engaged in intra and inter communal violence as perpetrators, victims, and bystanders. The first part of the research establishes normal conditions of the sociological life cycle and highlights natural areas of conflict that arise from exposure to rapid and/or external changes to their physical and social environment. The second part establishes parameters of expected damage from trauma, extended conflict, and failure to adapt to rapid environmental, social and political changes. The research methodology relies on a case study format that uses collaborative ethnography and phenomenological inquiry to answer the research questions and validate propositions made from existing literature and pre]existing research. The research questions focus on aspects of the sociological structure and failing psychological and emotional needs that are relevant to the subjectfs involvement in violent conflict. The research propositions are in part shaped from existing knowledge of tribal sociological structures that are related to the Tuareg by ethnicity, environment, and shared psycho]cultural attributes. The expected contribution of this research is the development of an alternative praxis for tribal engagement and village stability operations conducted by the United States Special Operations Command.

Abstract:
I am from Dearborn, Michigan, home to one of the largest populations of Arab immigrants in the United States. This mixing of cultures, of peoples, of identities has informed my writing in many ways. Narrative themes of immigration, exile and isolation inspire my writing and my thesis represents chapters from my first novel, tracing the Arab American immigration experience from 1914 until 1967; and, my second novel, set in Detroit, continues this narrative through the perspectives of two characters, drawing on the post 9-11 Arab American community and experience. The poet Hayan Charara has spoken of “the absence of a ‘personal history’ of the Middle East. . . for those whose families were among the first waves of Arabs to immigrate to the United States.” As an Arab American writer, my fiction attempts to create threads of memory, of family, of stories, that connect us back to a similar space.

Abstract:
- Libraries are institutions of learning - They represent the cultural heritage and values of a society. Public libraries are often located at places of urban significance or, in the course of time help to establish the latter. They may be landmarks in the urban landscape and help to orient oneself. A public library serves the people, and its spirit should be truly public. A City and University Library in particular, is a highly frequented place where students and citizens meet. It can therefore easily become more than just a place for obtaining information. It can become a place for human interaction, offering spaces to enjoy a concert, to exhibit art or to go there to have lunch or dinner. In that sense, it could be transformed from an institution which is usually used during the day into a vital place which is also used in the evening and on the weekend. The following project pursues the notion of breaking with the traditional image of a public library, expanding its service and thus increasing its position as a place of public interest. This notion is a result of my thesis work, rather than the initial idea from which I started. The location of the project at the edge of the university campus in Frankfurt, Germany and the existence of a theater next to the existing library offered the possibility of establishing a cultural meeting place in one of Frankfurt's city districts.<br>Master of Architecture

Abstract:
Esta constatação tem importância vital para o desenvolvimento da rotina narcotraficante, influenciando diretamente a vida da população carioca.<br>Think about urban space in Rio de Janeiro first refers to thoughts of violence and fear. Thus the city has been through a strong and intense process of fragmentation of its socialpolitical and spatial dimensions. Compounding this violent scenary emerge the drug dealers factions that dominates most of Rio’s favelas, the state forces – in fact just the police – and ordinary people who watch terrified and afraid, the intense armed conflict, especially the population living in favelas. The sociopolitical and economic power reached by criminal gangs in metropolis of Rio de Janeiro is so influent that legitimates itself at young offenders internment units and adult prisons. Thus these places of confinement connected with the favelas configured territories of intense political and war dispute and play a crucial role in the conduct of the daily dynamics of the city. This correlation is perceived and analyzed through a trans-scalar study which allows us to see the space not only in their territorial feature - as a contention, a prison - but also as a place of life and place of confinement simultaneously. Therefore we are witnessing the formation and its subsequent transescalar interconnection of different prison territories such as young offenders internment unities and places of residence like the favelas and exclusive condominiums. This finding is vital for the drug dealers faction routine development , directly influencing the lives of people in Rio.

Abstract:
The empirical data that lies behind this survey comes from field work between 1992 and 1995. This field work represents work I made myself as a sales-man for the company, Malmberg Original Water. The task was to implement the Malmberg mineral water brand on the restaurant market of the South-Swedish area. Our aim was to reach the upper-scale, premium market of restaurants. The mission was successfully completed, and at 1996 we had completed the position as the most exclusively positioned mineral water brand in Skåne (Southernmost Sweden). How could we fulfill this mission so fast, and with a very limited marketing budget (=0)?The secret key was that we managed to work and be in line with the values of our targeted customer group. We lived close to the customers and developed what was in line with their needs. This follows the research of Porter (1980) and Philipson (2011), serving the customer groups´ needs. Despite lack of money and budget from PR and promotion we made a large effort of serving and doing service towards our targeted customers. The thesis also focuses the target group´s importance for the construction of the brand identity. Strategic brand management-literature normally considers the target group taken-for-granted. Consumer research-literature, on the other hand, considers it as something vague and undefined. By applying a perspective of cultural values between the company, the brand and the target group it is possible to qualify the target group more than just refer to it as consumers or customers. The thesis also point to the conclusion not to consider brand identity as an independent entity, but dependent on the customers and the consumers. The consumers give birth to the brand. Finally since the target group is a group that is constantly set in motion, the brand also should reflect and represent change.

Abstract:
Increasing attention in the conservation sciences is being paid to the existence of a ‘gap’ between research and action. Although much research has implications for management, rarely does it have real impact on the problems it seeks to address. As a result researchers are increasingly concerned with demonstrating that the impacts of their research go beyond academia. Recent scholarship has proposed various solutions for ‘bridging the gap’. However, missing from the debate is a closer analysis of who lies within the gap and what happens in that place: What kinds of encounters and misencounters occur between scientists and non-scientists during the practice of doing scientific research, especially in situations that include ‘everyday’ activities and communication (i.e. fieldwork)? This thesis approaches the issue by enacting a Participatory Action Research methodology in the Amazonian region of Madidi National Park in Bolivia, that includes a quantitative analysis of past research, semi-structured and unstructured interviews (n = 137), and workshops and focus groups (n = 12) with local inhabitants, scientists and park guards. The study demonstrates the significance of currently unacknowledged or undervalued components of the research-action gap, such as power, respect and recognition. It explains how and why within spaces of encounter and misencounter between scientists and local people, knowledge can be exchanged or hidden away, worldviews can be expanded or further entrenched, and scientific research can be welcomed or rejected. It reconceptualises the gap as a crucial, productive space within which asymmetrical relations of power between scientists and local people have the potential to be transformed. In additional, the thesis discusses the implications of these spaces for the future of conservation science and practice in postcolonial contexts, with an explicit call to action for researchers to reprioritize the who at the gap between research and action.

Abstract:
The concept of organisational culture has been the subject of considerable debate within the literature on corporate culture and organisational behaviour. Central to the issue is whether or not managers can create, manage and change culture in the workplace. Some commentators are clear that it is within the sphere of management control; others are equally clear that it is not; others support the idea that managers can influence the dominant culture within their organisation. Organisational culture has become closely associated with the concurrent development of the models of human resource management (HRM). Employee commitment is frequently a stated aim and aspiration for both corporate culture initiatives and HRM practices, both seeking to affect employee behaviour at work. This research investigates how culture within the workplace affects the behaviour of service industry employees and their intentions regarding whether or not to leave their job.

Thank you.<br>This study was based upon the understanding that as important and essential as the technical and management dimensions of teacher evaluation are, efforts to address these dimensions alone are not enough to create effective teacher evaluation systems. Rather, the research and literature suggest that a third and critical dimension - school culture- and its relationship to the technical and management dimensions must be investigated and resolved to create an effective evaluation system. This study investigated this recent line of inquiry, describing and explaining the relationship between teacher evaluation and school culture. The procedures included a review of teacher evaluation documents, interviews with administrators, surveying 43 teachers, and focus group interviews with non-tenured and tenured teacher groups at an independent school in central Ohio. Interviews with the school's administration provided an explanation of the schools teacher evaluation documents. Data from the questionnaire provided information for how teachers' describe and explain 4 subcategories: (1) purposes and use of teacher evaluation information; (2) foundations and criteria used in evaluation; (3) procedures of evaluation; and (4) school culture. Focus group interviews provided further description and explanation of teacher evaluation and the culture of the school. Analysis of frequency distributions indicated the number of times each Likert-type response was obtained for the sample, non-tenured, and tenured teacher groups. Paired Sample T -tests determined the level of significance of resulting differences between non-tenured and tenured teachers for each questionnaire item. Pairwise correlation tests provided the measure of relationship between teacher evaluation and school culture for the sample, non-tenured, and tenured teacher responses. Pairwise Total Means of teacher evaluation and school culture subcategories provided an overall measure of the relationship between teacher evaluation and school culture. The results of the statistical tests support the conclusion that there is a relationship between teacher evaluation and school culture. The results also support the conclusion that, overall, the non-tenured and tenured teachers describe the relationship teacher evaluation and school culture similarly.<br>2031-01-01

Abstract:
This is a qualitative study of how school culture in relation to student identity affects students’ academic performance, especially in a low-income community. The study was conducted in southern Malmö at an elementary school where 9th graders were given the opportunity to participate. Nine students answered a survey anonymously which I then analyzed using identity theory. My conclusions indicate that school culture does play a part in affecting students’ performance. The findings suggest that high performing students more strongly identify academically than low performing students. Finally, this research indicates that more studies on the topic need to be done. I hope this study contributes to a broader interest in how schools can create a culture where students become more motivated and performs better academically. Possible areas to further investigate would be how low performing students are included by schools and what actions schools take, or could take, to create an academic culture for all students.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to discuss the influence of national culture in leadership within military organizations and also to explore the effectiveness of a specific leadership model in a multinational context. Developmental leadership (DL) is a model used by the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) since 2003. However, the aim is not to answer the question of if a certain leadership model has an effect or not and therefore legitimize or discard the use of it. It rather raises the question of why this leadership model has been chosen to become such an integral part of an organization. This thesis analyzes DL by classifying its components using Hofstede’s theory of cultural dimensions as a basis and compares the results with Sweden’s cultural dimensions to find a correlation. The results show a high correlation between DL and Sweden, but DL does not correlate with Belgium’s cultural dimensions. Sweden’s characteristics are also complemented by empirical data collected for the purpose of this thesis. According to this interview study with Swedish officers, even though DL is not consciously applied to their leadership styles, it coincides with the characteristics of their vision of an ideal leader. Moreover, DL consists of components that are suitable foundations for an effective multinational leadership.

Abstract:
This thesis explores successive police reform agendas over the period 1979 – 2012 in terms of the relationship between political ideology, police reform and police occupational culture. The thesis addresses the interplay between ideologically driven police reform and the reception of reform agendas within the central mindset of policing. It examines the significance of political and economic drivers in police reform agendas and literature on police occupational culture, with emphasis upon change and reform and the response within the police. As a means of exploring the relationship between reform and police culture the thesis gathers data through empirical research based upon documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews. Research upon street and management cops (Reuss-Ianni 1983) and the analytical model of cultural knowledge and change outlined by Chan (1997), was used to analyse and present the research findings. The main conclusions concern how ideology in police reform agendas was received by police occupational culture. Utilising the theoretical frameworks of Reuss-Ianni and Chan, the thesis argues that the ideology in police reform agendas is received and assessed through cultural knowledge. This places into context documented features of police occupational culture such as the sense of mission, conservatism, resistance to change and the street – management divide. As a result, this thesis contributes to the understanding of police occupational culture through the prism of reform and the implications for practice, outlining how ideologically driven police reform agendas are received and interpreted through police occupational culture.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was toexplore organizational culture in a digital context, so that a greater understanding of the relations between the two subjects could be developed. The interest for the subject came from reflections and observations obtained during a prior internship at a small organization using the digital collaboration platform Slack in their daily work. To answer the purpose of the study, one main research question; ‘What is the relationship between organizational culture and a digital communication platform as Slack?’ and two sub questions; ‘How is Slack used to solve problems with internal integration? and ‘How is Slack used to solve problems with external adaption?’ was formulated. The two sub questions came from an operationalization of Schein’s (2010, p.18) well used definition of organizational culture. By using the qualitative method netnography to study the behaviors and interactions of the members of a small organization through participating observations, in combination with the field notes and observations from the prior internship, the research questions were successfully answered. The results showed that Slack was used as a tool to maintain structure and order during problems with external adaption in form of a re-organization creating an unsecure time-period. Decrement in activity also showed that the usage of Slack was limited in time and easily could be exchanged, but that appreciated cultural rites and behaviors created from using it could live on outside of Slack. Results also showed that Slack successfully functioned as a tool to solve problems with internal integration. By allowing new members to efficiently come in contact with both the formal and informal cultural elements, the very essence of culture as in underlying assumptions was quickly taught. The efficiency of using Slack for internal integration was also shown to rely on a new possible problem in form of a disintegration between the private and work. The answer to the main research question was that Slack is an artifact, inhabiting other artifact, living in symbiosis with the organization. Even though Slack could help an organization to cope with problems of external adaption and internal integration, Slack on its own did not serve as a one single place for understanding and becoming a part of an organization and its culture, as the organization and culture still will live and develop outside of the digital medium.<br>Syftet med den här studien var att utforska organisationskultur i en digital miljö, så att en ökad förståelse för de två ämnena kunde utvecklas.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the cultural bargain; the balancing relationship between author monopoly and user affect desires, as applying to the ambiguity of characters. Character culture is a hybrid of the characters that are created and sold by authors with artistic and legal concerns, and the character-affect-relationship of the audience users of those characters. This study examines the law and industry practices in the United States and Canada as it relates to character and the limited scope of the law in defining just what exactly a character is. Also, I examine the major issues in the cultural bargain between the ownership of characters of authors, and the appropriation of characters by audiences, through the dominate arguments for both authors and audiences and the issue of privileged accessibility to characters. By "appropriate", I am referring to any act of an audience member, utilizing a character they do not own, in new ways, that the original author of the character did not give permission for, or approve. Finally, I present my analysis of how the cultural bargain may experience a balance between both authors and audience, by defining characters using the audience affect interpretation as criteria.

Grobler, Du Preez. "Alignment between brand and company culture within Hollard Namibia." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/97613.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Within the service industry, the brand is portrayed directly through the people within the organisation. Employees operating by the company’s central value system will live the values of the brand in their daily activities. A company that focuses on aligning their brand values and company culture as a strategic differentiator will be in a position to gain a competitive advantage. This study was conducted within Hollard Namibia and investigated if an alignment exists between the brand values and company culture and if so, to what extent. The investigation comprised a literature study on the alignment between brand values and company culture and included the concepts of organisational culture, models on organisational culture, brand as an equity, brand values, and brand alignment. Quantitative research methodology was applied to evaluate the existence of an alignment. A questionnaire designed by the Barrett Value Centre was used to collect the data. The results of the survey would then illustrate if there is an alignment and if it can be used as a strategic differentiator. The research proved that aligning your brand values and company culture can be used as a method to enhance an organisation’s competitive advantage and create successful future sustainability. This strategic alignment focus is not a once-off action plan. As the business changes, so must the values be amended to follow the changing demands of the employees and the industry it services. The research also proved that the stagnated gross profit margins in Hollard can be due to the absence of an active internal branding process within the organisation. After finalising the research assignment, it was concluded that the personal values, current cultural values and desired culture values of Hollard’s employees differ from each other. A high level of entropy was found and there was only a small alignment between the brand values and organisational culture within the organisation. The study recommends that the leadership team of Hollard Namibia develops and implements a strategic brand value awareness programme. This strategic plan must incorporate a culture of employee centricity within the organisation. Hollard Namibia (Pty) Ltd will maintain and extend its competitive advantage if it implements the suggested changes.

This essays focuses on analyzing Embratel (a large telecommunications company) cultural management, in the post privatization period, when organizational values got aligned with the values of the finance subculture, that emerged as the dominant subculture, and identify its impact in organizational performance. The organization, confronting with an hostile environment, faced a crisis in its results, that drove to a reformulation in its strategic objectives, that gained a financial focus. Through qualitative analyses, a case study was conducted relating the emergence of subcultures, culture change and performance. The research was based on a documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. The cultural agreement process and its impacts in financial performance were investigated. The conclusion of this study reinforces the hypothesis in the organization theory that indicates a strong correlation between the emergence of dominant subcultures, periods of external and internal turbulence, changes in the organization structure, showing the key influence of some variables in the cultural changing management process with focus on performance, such as: power structure, training, communication, reward, selection and evaluation systems and decision process.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the correlation between cultural values and the semantic content of words over time; toward this purpose, the research focuses on Judeo-Christian religious terminology in the English language. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is of central interest to this study, and the implications of the hypothesis, including a bidirectional interpretation allowing for both the influence of language on worldview and culture on language, is of great relevance to the research findings and conclusions. The paper focuses on the etymology and sources of religious terminology in the English language, the prominent category of terms with both religious and secular applications attained through semantic shift, and the role of religious words as English taboo. The research findings imply that a bidirectional understanding of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is the correct one. This is achieved both through analysis of historical events and linguistic development which emphasize the speaker's role in language development and through the study of societal values that are reinforced through linguistic practices, namely taboo.

Forssman, Timothy Robin. "The spaces between places : a landscape study of foragers on the Greater Mapungubwe Landscape, southern Africa." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2014. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:11823954-08f8-4c0a-ae8d-77d7a8a855a3.

Abstract:
Our understanding of the Later Stone Age (LSA) on the Greater Mapungubwe Landscape has until now been fairly limited. However, it is a landscape upon which foragers witnessed and partook in agriculturalist state formation between AD 900 and 1300, altering their cultural behaviour to suit their changing social and political topography. Nowhere else in southern Africa were foragers part of such developments. For this project a landscape approach was used to study the various changes in the regional LSA record as well as the way in which foragers interacted with farmers. In order to address these issues, data were obtained from an archaeological survey followed by an excavation of seven sites in north-eastern Botswana, part of the Greater Mapungubwe Landscape. These finds indicate that the local forager record varies chronologically and spatially, which had not previously been recorded. Foragers also used a variety of site types and in each a different forager expression was deposited, providing indications of their changing settlement pattern. Notably, this included a gradual movement into agriculturalist homesteads beginning by at least AD 1000 and concluding by AD 1300, when the Mapungubwe capital was abandoned. Thus, interactions, at least in some cases, led to assimilation. There is also clear evidence of exchange with agriculturalists at many of the excavated sites, but this does not always seem to be related to their proximity with one another. Performing a landscape study has also made it possible to make two general conclusions with regard to LSA research. First, these data challenge ethnography, displaying its limitations particularly with linking modern Bushman practices, such as aggregation and dispersal patterns or hxaro gift exchange, to LSA foragers. Second, a full landscape understanding combines the archaeology of multiple cultural landscapes and in this case also crosses national borders, two themes often neglected in southern African archaeological studies.

Abstract:
Globalisation has always been researchers' main concern and interest over a long period of the time. One effect of globalisation is that the composition of project teams had become increasingly diverse. The differing national cultural backgrounds of members increases the complexity of team composition, which regulates the success of the project performance. Research has shown that diverse teams outperform homogenous ones. Other studies have investigated the impact of national culture on projects. But our knowledge of how effectively companies can manage a complex, multicultural team project is inadequate and limited. Furthermore, theoretical and empirical studies concerning how the national cultural diversity of teams can impact project performance are limited. Most of the studies are qualitative, either focusing on one country or discussing one aspect of culture, and mainly considering team performance. To fill this gap, this study investigates the national cultural factors that influence multicultural project teams and determine the cultural dimensions that impact on project performance. In particular, it examines the influence of five national culture dimensions developed by Hofstede on multicultural team complexity variables including integration, communication, trust and knowledge-sharing, and to recognise how these factors are related to project performance. The territory chosen for this study was the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, as all of these nations rely intensely upon an expat workforce because of the lack of both skilled and unskilled manpower in the local market. A survey instrument was extracted and developed from previously validated questionnaire scales. Pilot testing was conducted to ensure the scales, format and contents of the survey instrument were appropriate. A range of project team members were targeted, and 329 valid questionnaires were returned. The data obtained was analysed by using two widely used statistical software tools, SPSS and AMOS. The data analysis steps included reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and validity (Confirmatory Factor) analysis. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the entire model. By using SEM, it was possible to test the parsimonious nature of the model, identify the model, determine whether it makes theoretical sense, and examine its fit to the data. The relationship between national culture, team performance and project performance was analysed using path analysis as part of the SEM. The research outcome showed that national culture has a significant impact on the team performance, especially on integration, communication, trust and knowledge sharing, which will also moderate the relationship between national culture and project performance. The finding of this research study confirmed that there is a relationship between national cultural differences and project success. Understanding the cultural differences among team members, who are from different national cultural backgrounds, is an essential aspect of managing projects successfully. Moreover, mismanaging or ignoring cultural differences of the team members may lead to project failures. Furthermore, the outcomes have obviously shown that the optimal project performance is accomplished when the entire project team is thoroughly integrated and incorporated with the project purpose. This study contributes to the literature by delivering a deeper understanding of the cultural issues that influence the performance of multicultural project teams in GCC countries. In addition, it provides greater insight into national culture within projects context, in particular providing empirical evidence that different nationalities have different cultural orientations and that these different cultural orientations are associated with different levels of performance. In practice, the findings will assist project directors and managers in similar countries to further recognise the role of national culture in the context of enhancing project performance. In particular, project directors and managers can undertake an assessment of their teams' national cultural background and based on that, forecast the probable team and project performance. Where necessary, action can be taken to manage or even change the cultural orientation in terms of the attitudes and behaviours of project teams. This research expressed the views of professionals who work in a multicultural environment on the extent to which national cultural dimensions may affect the outcome of a project.

Abstract:
<p>A study presenting the differences in corporate culture between South African and Swedish airfreight industries with focus on the excess baggage sectors of the industry. This industry is very competitive and very international as goods are being exported and imported in vast amounts around the world.</p><p>Using a web questionnaire and personal interviews, this gave me a better understanding of the present corporate culture and to highlight the differences between the countries in question. Once these differences are laid down the study shows the possibility of mutual interaction between the industry and the countries. It provides the major differences between the countries and brings forth a hypothesis for the report. The study shows that hierarchy levels play a huge role in the South African company; the relatively high uncertainty level of South Africans is a result of the high power distances between management and employees. A South African employee would try to find a solution to any problem while a Swede would discontinue when the first attempt fails. Furthermore my study provides a general idea of each of the countries, but what is evident is that the airfreight industry follows a certain corporate culture of its own and finally due to the countries diversity, South Africa seems to have an advantage when working with different cultures.</p>

Abstract:
First-generation college students are less likely to attend and complete college than their peers whose parents have completed college. Among the reasons cited for this disparity is lack of parental familiarity of the college admissions process and financial aid opportunities. First-generation youth wishing to pursue a college education must rely on others for this knowledge. This study examines first-generation college students' perceptions of support and whether their places of origin have any bearing on their future plans. The study examines interviews with participants through the lens of Tinto's (1993) model of student departure to examine whether their responses, and whether their places of origin, point toward likelihood of student retention. This study finds that students cite parents and high school faculty and staff as most supportive when preparing for college. After arriving in college, there are no differences among students based on place of origin and likelihood of retention. Participation in a retention program appears to help the students meet the criteria for student retention as outlined by Tinto's model.

Abstract:
International relations can be reviewed from different perspectives. One of them is through culture. In general, a lecture and an analysis of it from this specific point of view has been neglected, attracting much less attention comparing to other issues, like the political science, the international law, or the economics. The cultural perspective offers a mirror of the reality and can contribute to a better understanding of the external relations and on what is happening at other levels, usually considered as more relevant in the foreign policies and the traditional diplomacy, like politics, trade and commerce, or military issues. At the same time, this cultural perspective needs a transversal focus to offer a real insight and overview of the actual scope, due to the multifaceted feature of culture considered in its broad approach. The international presence and the role of culture within the bilateral relations is conditioned by the definition of the external cultural policies and the priorities and strategies in its bilateral relations with third countries. Sometimes the external cultural policies can have a close link with the internal cultural policies as well, being a projection of the internal priorities in the international context. The institutional structure and the competences of the different institutions can also influence in the role of culture in the bilateral relations of a specific country. Aside of that, there are other relevant factors that can be determinant in the bilateral relations, like the historical background or the bilateral political and commercial relations, among others. Culture in the context of the international relations and cooperation between Europe and Egypt includes from the institutional level, the bilateral and multilateral relations of the European Union, and its 28 Member States at an individual level as well. Otherwise, some of these European countries have had a long presence during the colonialist period, maintain historical ties, or have economic interests in Egypt. Within this framework, the different cultural policies are embedded in the external actions of the bilateral cultural relations and cooperation, where the cultural projection is a component of the public diplomacy as a form of soft power. The present research has as primary objective to get a deep inside of the bilateral relations, and the identification of some quantitative indicators and qualitative aspects of the European bilateral relations from the public sector, and makes a detailed analysis of which is the present situation of culture in the context of the international relations with a strategic country of the Arab world like Egypt. Getting an insight into the different facts, parameters and indicators allows to identify the different exogenous and endogenous factors which can have a determinant role, jointly with the explicit and implicit objectives, and other elements to consider, including priorities, strategies, instruments and activities. Actions taken into consideration are those from the European Union, and some of its Member States, which are reviewed and compared in a systematic way. This research takes as case study five of the European countries, the most populated of the European Union, and several specific fields. It starts checking the way how each individual country is presenting its external cultural policy in the official web, and followed by the cultural bilateral relations with Egypt. Then it is verified the role of the national cultural institutes, the archaeological cooperation, the higher education, the research and scientific cooperation, the presence of culture in the cooperation to development and the media. Finally it is revised the European Union's cultural presence through actions and initiatives in Egypt, and checked how the individual cultural bilateral relations of the selected countries fit together with them. The result offers a broad and comprehensive perspective of the presence of culture in international relations and cooperation in the particular case of Egypt. The analysis carried out allows concluding an insufficiently structured place of culture in the European external relations and cooperation with Egypt, the missed coordination among the different actors involved, the individual interests, and some incoherencies as well.<br>Les relacions internacionals poden ser examinades des de diferents perspectives.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the reception of literature, cinema, and the theatre in the inter-war Sunday press, and in particular how the concept of a "national culture" of inter-war Britain was reflected and defined in five specific newspapers of the time. Drawing on a vast amount of previously unexamined material, it provides the fullest picture to date of this widely neglected area.

Abstract:
This study is a cultural history of the charro cantor who appeared with the development of the mass media in Mexico: the "talkies" and the radio in the 1930s. The emergence of the films known as the comedias rancheras, the use of rural images such as the charro and of songs in these films renders them appropriate to study within the context of the relations between mass media and popular culture. Three main questions will be addressed: 1) To what extent was the charro cantor a creation of the media? 2) At the time when these films were first shown, what was the relationship between the media and the government? 3) How do we account for the popularity of these artists in their day? In this work the term mediations is used as a conceptual framework for the study of the media and popular culture in Mexico as forming part of a process of cultural evolution. Thus, the charro cantor and the canciones rancheras are examined within the concept that mass culture did not appear suddenly and in confrontation with old popular expressions, but was part of the process of the massification in society which had started in the nineteenth century. This work traces various elements of melodrama in the comedia ranchera, especially the image of the charro, back to previous popular forms. The Introduction sets out the framework of study and offers a brief discussion of the literature concerning the charro cantor and a descriptive account of the elements which constitute the charro cantor and his music, the canciön ranchera. Chapters 1 and 2 look at the charro in his role of bandit in the nineteenth and early twentieth century serials and corridos. Chapter 3 studies the development of the charro in popular theatre and the entrance of the mariachi band in the radio industry from 1930 to 1952. Chapter 4 concentrates on the development of the cinema from the time of the post-revolutionary governments of the 1920s, to its expansion in the 1940s into a partnership between the state and the private sector. Chapters 5,6 and 7 analyse three key films between 1930 and 1952, in order to look closely at the development of the charro cantor in the comedian rancheras filmsand the way songs were used in these films. These chapters permit the study of the ranchero repertoire within the context of the films. This sheds light on how in the Mexican cinema songs were used in specific realistic settings such as the palenques (cockfight rings), cantinas and pulquerias; the serenade and the family party. This facilitates the analysis of the song narratives within the context in which they were presented to the audience and examines the types of songs included in the ranchero repertoire: corridos and serenades both old and new, canciones mexicanas from popular theatre, and canciones rancheras, the songs specially written for these films. The Appendix includes the biographies of two of the main representatives of the Charro Cantor, the stars Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante. This dissertation contributes to the field of cultural studies by the application of the concept of mediations which allows for the study of popular culture and mass media as part of a process of development, avoiding the division between high and low culture. This also permits an examination of the changes in the relationships between the media, the audience and the government. This approach makes it possible to bring together the various pre-electronic elements of the charro cantor such as the characteristics of melodrama in the narratives of the nineteenth century folletines and novelas por entrega. These forms together with popular theatre and corridos are studied with reference to their influence upon the emergence of the charro cantor image in radio and cinema. This will explain how the charro cantor was for the audience, many of them rural immigrants, a mediation, a vehicle for their transition from their rural culture to life in the city

Abstract:
An exploration and analysis on the connections between identity, culture and contemporary art. A number of critical race theories are examined as possible constructions of Asian-American women identities. This paper seeks to understand how Asian-American women reconcile with these strivings and limitations and how they maintain their native racial identities despite their conflicting desire to conform to the mainstream culture. This paper also examines two contemporary women artists who promote a dialogue regarding transcultural identities.

Abstract:
This research explores the relationship between leadership and organisational culture in an organisation. Organisational culture is often an important factor influencing the competitive strength of an organisation. Leadership is also a critical component in the success of an organisation. It is important to understand how these two powerful determinants of organisational performance affect each other. Research determining that specific types of organisational culture favour particular styles of leadership is important as it aids organisational leaders to identify which styles of leadership are more likely to be successful in their culture. In the organisational culture, leadership deals with creating a clearly articulated vision and possessing the skills and the resolve to recruit and develop followers who are committed to carrying out the vision. Having the ability to see the bigger picture and maintaining a balance between high–level strategies and front–line tactics. Inherent to the organisational culture are many values as task–related and relational values that deal with people as individuals and as organisation members. Leaders act as builders, as maintainers, and as watchdogs of organisational culture and values per se (as cited in Bass, 1990: 586–588). Organisational success in achieving its goals and objectives depends on the leaders of the organisation and their leadership styles. By adopting the appropriate leadership styles, leaders can affect employee job satisfaction, commitment and productivity The results of this research indicate that there is a significant relationship between specific types of organisational cultures and leadership styles. Leadership orientation and organisational culture dimensions proved to be significant predictors of job satisfaction, organisational commitment and intention to quit. The research concludes with a number of implications and recommendations for theory and practice.<br>Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Abstract:
Several important developmental processes occur in the young adulthood period. Young adults form their identities, determine trajectories regarding careers, and typically they form intimate relationships. Erikson (1963) stated that healthy identity development during adolescence is a necessary precursor to intimacy in romantic relationships during emerging adulthood. Although findings from cross-sectional and short-term longitudinal studies somewhat confirm the proposed link between identity and intimacy development, none of them addresses the role of culture in moderating Erikson's tenets of developmental ordering. The primary goal of the present investigation was to determine the role of cultural orientation in identity and intimacy development among emerging adults today. Participants included 422 university students (mean age = 20.80, sd = 3.63) were recruited from one urban university in Delhi, India (n = 96), two urban universities in Beijing, China (n = 180), and one urban university in Orlando, USA (n = 146). Among this sample, 36.7% were males, and 63.3% were females. All participants completed a battery of measures, including a Demographic Questionnaire, the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, and the Cultural Orientation Scale. Our first hypothesis that identity would predict intimacy in relationships was confirmed. Our second hypothesis that identity development will be a negative predictor for both relationship anxiety and relationship avoidance in romantic relationships was also confirmed. The third hypothesis that females would endorse more collectivistic cultural values compared with males, who will endorse more individualistic cultural values was also confirmed. Finally, our fourth hypothesis that the relationship between identity and intimacy would be moderated by cultural orientation, such that it will be stronger among those that endorse more individualistic cultural values compared to those who endorse more collectivistic cultural values was not supported. Results from the multiple regression analysis indicated that although identity and cultural orientation considered alone were significant predictors of intimacy in relationships, the relationship between identity and intimacy were moderated by cultural orientation only for relationship anxiety, such that a strong sense of identity along with a collectivistic cultural orientation predicted less relationship anxiety. Further analyses and implications for professional practice are discussed.<br>ID: 031001324; System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.; Mode of access: World Wide Web.; Adviser: Steven L.
