Slevin, John Patrick. "The historical writing of Alfred of Beverley." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/14432.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the historical writing of the twelfth-century Yorkshire historian Alfred of Beverley, compiler of a Latin chronicle covering the history of Britain from its supposed foundation by Brutus down to the time of Henry I. From the late Middle Ages until the eighteenth century Alfred enjoyed a considerable reputation amongst chroniclers, antiquaries and topographers but by the mid-nineteenth century scholarly opinion had come to consider his work highly derivative, uninformative and of little historical value. The chronicle was printed by Thomas Hearne in 1716, but was never edited in the Rolls Series and the text has remained largely neglected until today. Alfred’s sources in the chronicle have been identified and his use of them examined. The circumstances and date of compilation have been reconsidered and supported by internal evidence from the text, a date of compilation of c.1148 - c.1151 x 1154 is proposed. Alfred’s purpose and intended audience of the work has been considered and evidence for the work’s dissemination and reception from the twelfth to the seventeenth century has been gathered in order to assess the place of the work in medieval historiography. This study finds the Historia to be a text of considerable historical interest and value. It shares common features with historical narratives of the first half of the twelfth century in attempting to provide a comprehensive account of the island’s past, but does so in a more concise, less discursive literary manner. It reveals the application of the methodologies of scholastic exegesis to the writing of history, in its language, textual organization and in the interrogation of authorities that it engages in to determine the veracity of historical data. The text is an important witness for the dissemination of the important twelfth-century source texts it uses. It is the first Latin chronicle to incorporate Geoffrey of Monmouth’s British history into its narrative fabric (Henry of Huntingdon’s c.1139 abbreviation of Geoffrey’s history was inserted as a self-standing ‘Letter to Warinus’). Alfred’s critical reception of the Galfridian material is examined in the thesis. The extensive borrowings from Henry of Huntingdon, Geoffrey of Monmouth, John of Worcester and the Durham Historia Regum, provide important evidence for the dissemination of these texts, which the thesis examines. A finding of the study is that the Historia has been powerfully influenced by Henry of Huntingdon’s Historia Anglorum in its structure and thematic approach. The later reception of Alfred’s Historia by Ranulph Higden in his Universal Chronicle Polychronicon is examined and the impact that this had on Alfred’s later reception in historiography, from William Caxton to William Camden is traced and explored.

Webb, Thomas Andrew. "Power losses in spiral bevel gears." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/27950/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes a numerical modelling strategy for characterising the windage of a spiral bevel gear rotating within a static shroud. The techniques employed include the use of a parametric solid model, and flow field modelling using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. A number of hypothetical physical alterations are made to a control system consisting of a gear and a shroud, based on those found in a Rolls-Royce aero engine. Windage is a parasitic power loss that occurs when a gear does work on air and oil within a gas turbine internal gearbox. It leads to degradation of the oil, which wears turbo-machinery and bearing components, shortening their lives. Windage power losses also impact upon the fuel consumption of an engine, reducing its environmental credentials. The requirement of the oil is to cool and lubricate the meshing location of a pair of gears and for it to then be removed from the vicinity of the gear - preventing its re-ingestion and recirculation. The best solution to these issues of reducing windage and managing the oil is to shroud the gear effectively. Additional cooling of oil can mitigate the damage of too much heat generation, but this adds weight and expense to an engine. A parametric model of a shrouded spiral bevel gear is created, which allows for changes to be made to single or multiple dimensions of the gear and shroud. A control volume CFD approach is used, with a single tooth of a gear modelled to reduce computational time. Four gear size variables are tested: inner diameter, outer diameter, cone angle and module (number of teeth). Findings for air-only show that windage can be reduced by: increasing the cone angle; increasing the number of teeth; or decreasing the outer diameter. The effect of changing the inner diameter on windage was found to be complex due to the interaction of gear and shroud upon the system results, but far less significant than the outer diameter, as windage was seen to scale by this variable to the power of 4.3. Changes to the design of the shroud are made, with a comparison of five inlet and five outlet designs. It is found that a sudden restriction at the inlet to the shroud is the most effective way of reducing single phase windage, with additional shroud features that make the flow path more tortuous also helping. The outlet of the shroud is shown to increase windage as it is opened up and permitted to be less restrictive. A series of investigations using a Lagrangian discrete particle model (DPM) to simulate the presence of oil droplets within the system are also presented. It is shown that the destination of oil within the domain is predominantly dictated by the source location of the oil, with little sensitivity to initial velocity or size. Film modelling on the surface of the shroud, using the DPM-based film model, allows the motion of a thin layer of oil to be studied. In conjunction with the five shroud outlet designs, it is shown that a less restrictive, more open shroud outlet design will help prevent re-ingestion of oil that is present within the shrouded area of the gear.

Abstract:
Spiral bevel gears are used widely in the transmission systems of several mechanical applications. The design of spiral bevel gears is very complicated. This is due to the complexity of the gear tooth geometry. This research concentrates on a special type of spiral bevel gears, the Palloid spiral bevel gears. The design methodology is based on the concepts of the machine kinematics. This delivers a numerical model of the spiral bevel gear tooth surfaces. The concept of a three dimensional vector analysis is applied. In addition, the condition of the tangential contact between the meshing surfaces of the cutting tool and gear blank is utilised. This is performed using the mathematical modelling software package MATLAB. The data points of the gear tooth surfaces obtained from MATLAB are defined as the nodes of the finite element mesh avoiding using a CAD package. In order to achieve high accuracy of gear geometry CAD software has to be avoided as the loss of accuracy is a problem combined with using CAD software. In addition, Hertzian contact problem for spiral bevel gears is studied using traditional Hertzian contact theory. Further more, finite element model is also investigated to compare the stress to that achieved from Hertzian analysis. Finite element analysis is applied in order to determine the response of the structure and bending stresses. Finite element analysis code ABAQUS/Standard is employed.

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the comparative study of three minster churches, those of Beverley, Ripon and Southwell, in the period 1066-c1300. It will seek to establish the course of their institutional development in the period, the role they played within the Archdiocese of York, and the effects of change in this period on their institutional identities both individually and collectively. As a study of non-cathedral institutions after the Conquest, it will also necessarily touch upon the relationship between central and local power, the dynamics of institutional change, and the mechanisms employed for the extension of archiepiscopal authority. Kermode, Jennifer Isobel. "The merchants of York, Beverley and Hull in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1990. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1848/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines three main aspects of the merchant class of York, Beverley, and Hull: their economic activities, political dominance and social and religious concerns. It argues that in each town, merchants played a significant role, and as their commercial fortunes were affected by endogenous factors, so was their position within each town. Chapter 1 gives a brief historical outline of each town's development, up to and including the period under study. Chapter 2 offers an overview of the fluctuating patterns of international trade, and of the changing fortunes of each town's investment in overseas trade. Within that context, chapter 4 focuses on individual merchant's business 'biographies', using them as a basis for a general discussion of the range and quality of the involvement of each town's merchant class in overseas trade. The second part of the chapter explores the evidence of capital accumulation by individuals, assessing the role of real estate, cash and credit in their enterprises. This analysis reveals the wide range in levels of commercial success to be found within the merchant class. Chapter 5 looks at the degree to which merchants dominated the government of each town, highlighting the notable differences between them. It concludes that the merchant oligarchs of each were tenacious in defending their position, until their commercial failure inexorably lead to their political demise. Chapter 6 offers insights into the ways in which merchants underpinned their commercial and political association through social networks. Inter-marriage, the poor survival rate of male heirs, household structure and family provision, all reflect a high degree of interdependence. The second section of the chapter concentrates on merchant benevolence and piety, concluding that their priorities were similar to those of other townsfolk and their religious beliefs as conservative.

Rapley, Steve. "Computational investigation of torque on spiral bevel gears." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2009. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10803/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a numerical modelling strategy for simulating the flow around a shrouded spiral bevel gear. The strategy is then applied to a series of parametric variations of key shroud parameters. The shroud and gear in question are generic, although based upon those employed in the internal gear box of a Rolls-Royce aeroengine. The need to shroud the gear comes from the fact that a spiral bevel gear, when rotated, acts like a fan. Work is done by the gear to move the surrounding fluid, usually air with oil particles suspended in it, which creates a parasitic loss, referred to as the windage power loss. The work within this thesis is part of a larger project which has investigated how windage power loss can be affected by geometric features of gears and shrouds. This is important as for large diameter (>200mm) bevel gears running at high speeds (>10,000 RPM) the windage power loss forms a substantial part of the total power loss. The modelling strategy has been developed in this work by studying 4 different fluid flow settings: Taylor-Couette flow, Conical Taylor-Couette flow, an unshrouded spiral bevel gear, and a shrouded spiral bevel gear. Work on Taylor-Couette flow provided a basic setting in which to trial various numerical techniques and gain familiarity with the commercial CFD program which would be used throughout this thesis (FLUENT), along with the meshing program GAMBIT. It gave an understanding of the flow, which was then used to simulate the flow in a modification of Taylor-Couette flow where the cylinders are replaced with cones, called Conical Taylor-Couette flow. Comparisons were made between 4 popular turbulence models, allowing a decision to be made on the `best' turbulence model to use in the modelling of a shrouded gear, and to start to develop the strategy. This strategy was then applied to the more complex geometry of an unshrouded gear, simulating experimental data which had been created on an in-house rig. To confirm the applicability of the strategy to modelling shrouded spiral bevel gears, it was applied to two shrouds for which experimental data was available. It showed that numerical modelling can capture the relative performance of the shrouds well. The work then continued by considering a series of parametric variations, whereby 3 key shroud parameters are each varied in 3 manners, producing 27 variations. Each of these parameters can affect the windage power loss: an assessment of how much each parameter affects windage power loss has been given. A description of the flow field in `good' and `bad' cases has been given, and through approximating the flow by using the compressible form of Bernoulli's equation, reasons for a `bad' shroud being `bad' have been presented.

Abstract:
Hand held power tools have enabled craftsmen and skilled workers in general to increase their productivity while cutting, assembling, and grinding. Atlas Copco Tools has been at the vanguard of ever increasing product performance in hand held power tools. One product module which has been thoroughly studied is the bevel gear transmissions present in Atlas Copco angle head nut runners. For these gears a large variation of service life has been observed due to difference in the running procedures and different service intervals. To extend the service life of nut runners, Atlas Copco Tools has started to investigate the effects from running-in of gears. Running-in is a procedure of reducing the surface roughness which can help to enhance the contact conditions. The impact of running-in can be measured either by the steady state of wear or steady state of friction. In this master thesis, different procedures of running-in have been investigated. The changes in contact pattern, surface roughness values and efficiency losses were measured step-vice during the different running-in setups. In addition, the minimum lubricant film thickness has been calculated analytically and a commercially available gear software provided the contact pattern for perfectly smooth gears which was compared with the real contact situation. The different running-in procedures resulted in one optimized running-in procedure where an increase in gear life was found. The biggest change in surface roughness happens at the very first running-in step. Hence, running the gears for one longer period of time, with low torque and specific speed range, gives the best running-in effects. Moreover, starved lubrication conditions were found which are most likely linked to the present gear design. A redesign is suggested to further increase the gear life.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the possible relationship between diaphragmaticintercostal breathing (DIB) and the occurrence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) in singers who specialize in Western art music (classical music). It is the product of a research project that had its origins within the contexts of vocal performance and voice pedagogy. An increasing number of voice students present with symptoms relating to GERD, and informal conversations with professional singers have also indicated that this is a medical condition with which many have to cope. Because GERD has a definite influence on the singer’s voice, it is necessary for the voice pedagogue to not only be aware of the symptoms of GERD, but also to guide the student in seeking help. Therefore, this article has a dual purpose, namely providing singers and voice pedagogues with sufficient information on the nature of, and the relationship between DIB and GERD on the one hand and, and on the other hand, to make some suggestions on how a voice pedagogue can assist a student in attempts to minimize the occurrence and effects of GERD.

Martanto, Wijaya. "Microinjection Into Skin Using Microneedles." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/11645.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of microneedles that penetrate the skin barrier, but are small enough not to stimulate nerves, has the potential to deliver drugs across skin in a painless way. Controlled injection by convective flow into skin using hollow microneedles, however, has remained a challenge. To address this challenge, the goals of this study were (i) to provide experimental measurements coupled with numerical simulations to quantitatively describe fluid mechanics of flow within microneedles over a range of experimental conditions and needle geometries, (ii) to demonstrate and study the effects of diffusion-based delivery of insulin to diabetic rats in vivo using solid and hollow microneedles and (iii) to determine the effect of experimental parameters on microinfusion through hollow microneedles into skin to optimize drug delivery protocols and identify rate-limiting barriers to flow. Experimentally, we quantified the relationship between pressure drop and flow rate through microneedles as a function of fluid viscosity and microneedle length, diameter, and cone half-angle. Microneedle tip diameter and taper angle were the primary controlling parameters for flow through conically tapered microneedles as shown by numerical simulations. Flow rates over a range of 1.4 56 l/s were achieved through microneedles (in the absence of skin) with pressure drops in the range of 4.6 196.5 kPa. This work also studied the use of solid and hollow microneedle arrays to insert into the skin of diabetic animals for transdermal delivery of insulin. Blood glucose levels dropped by as much as 80% in diabetic rats in vivo. Larger drops in blood glucose level and larger plasma insulin concentrations were shown due to higher donor solution insulin concentration, shorter microneedles insertion time and fewer repeated insertions. The final scope of this work was to determine the effect of microneedle geometry and infusion protocols on microinfusion flow rate into skin in vitro. Infusion flow rates ranged from 21 to 1130 l/h was demonstrated using glass microneedles. The presence of a bevel at the microneedle tip, larger retraction distance and insertion depth, larger infusion pressure and the presence of hyaluronidase led to larger infusion flow rates.

D'Antonio, Tracy A. "Esthetic blending: visual vs. spectrophotometric data analysis for different bevels in class IV dental composite direct restorations." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5450.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine which type of bevel in a class IV dental composite restoration is the most esthetic and has the best blend to natural tooth structure via clinical and spectrophotometric evaluations. The null hypotheses were as follows: (1) there is no difference in visual evaluation rank scores among five groups of evaluators for each type of bevel; (2) there is no agreement in the visual evaluation rank scores of the seven groups of bevels among all evaluators or within each group of evaluators; (3) there is no difference in the lightness values among seven types of bevels at each of eight measurement points or for the whole tooth as measured by a spectrophotometer; and (4) there is no correlation between the visual evaluation and the spectrophotometric evaluation. The class IV samples were made via CAD/CAM milling for standardization. There were seven groups: negative control (no bevel); short (1mm) and straight bevel; short (1mm) and scalloped bevel; long (2mm) and straight bevel; long (2mm) and scalloped bevel; infinite (3+mm) and straight bevel; and infinite (3+mm) and scalloped bevel. The fractures were restored with the same type of dental composite via a digitally designed mold fabricated with a 3D printer. Once completed, the samples were randomized and evaluated visually by 91 people in five groups (faculty, graduate residents, pre-doctoral dental students, assistants/hygienists, and auxiliary staff). Evaluators placed the samples in the order they deemed least to most esthetic within a lightbox set to CIE Standard Illumination D65. After the visual evaluation, the lightness (L*) values were measured optically with a reflectance spectrophotometer at eight points on each of the seven bevel groups, as well as on an un-prepared typodont tooth used for reference. One-way ANOVA on ranked data with the post-hoc Bonferroni test was conducted to detect a significant difference in median rating score among five groups of evaluators, and Kendall’s W was used to evaluate an agreement among multiple raters. One-way ANOVA with the post-hoc Tukey’s HSD was used to find a significant difference in mean lightness values among seven types of bevels. Dunnett’s test was used to compare the reference group with each of the seven bevel groups when evaluating the lightness values. Pearson Correlation test along with the simple linear regression analysis were used to determine whether a significant relationship existed between visual evaluation scores and lightness values. The groups were ranked from least to most esthetic as follows: no bevel, short and straight bevel, short and scalloped bevel, long and straight bevel, long and scalloped bevel, infinite and straight bevel, and infinite and scalloped bevel by the 91 evaluators and Kendall’s W was 0.80 (strong agreement). Moreover, no significant difference in rating scores was found among the five groups of evaluators regarding each type of bevel (p>0.05). The overall mean lightness values observed in groups 1-3 were significantly higher than those in groups 6 and 7 (P< 0.05), but no significant difference was noted among groups 1-5 or among groups 4-7. As the lightness values measured by the spectrophotometer decreased, the overall visual evaluation score increased. The Pearson Correlation Coefficient of -0.89 indicated there was a strong negative correlation between the two variables (p=0.0066). Linear regression analysis revealed that the predictor of lightness was significant (strong negative correlation, R-square 0.99, p< 0.0001). The first null hypothesis was accepted and the second, third, and fourth were rejected. There was no difference in median visual evaluation rank scores among five groups of evaluators for each type of bevel, however, there was agreement in the ranked order as the findings of this study indicated that infinite and scalloped bevel was the most preferred and no bevel was the least preferred via a strong agreement the evaluators. There was a significant difference in lightness values among the seven bevel groups; the shorter bevels had higher L* values that were closer to the L* values of the reference tooth while the longer bevels had lower L* values. The correlation data showed that placing a longer bevel (3+mm) allowed for a more gradual transition and better blending capabilities between the tooth structure and dental composite. The overall conclusion from this study was the longer the bevel, the more gradual the change in Lightness (L*), which correlated to the more esthetic restoration, as determined by the evaluators.

Abstract:
Sexuality education has been introduced into the South African syllabus, on a very elementary level, in the Life Orientation learning area of Outcomes- Based Education widely known as Curriculum 2005. Unfortunately outcomes based education ends in Grade 9, leaving learners from Grade 10 -12 with the old syllabus that includes academic subjects only. Very few schools follow a sexuality education programme in Grades 10 - 12 on their own initiative, because it is not compulsory in these grades. The Health Promoting Schools' policies do not include a comprehensive sexuality education programme outline as yet, but when the life-skills approach that is taught in Life Orientation is considered, many similarities in these approaches are identified. Therefore, sexuality education should not be purely factual, but should be taught in conjunction with important life-skills. The two skills investigated in this study are the ability for adolescents to identify and avoid risk behaviour and to be able to make more responsible decisions. Two schools in the Bronkhorstspruit area were identified to take part in this project. School A has implemented a comprehensive sexuality education programme for all its learners and School B has not. The results of the data collected from the questionnaire completed by 100 respondents from the two schools indicated that those from School A had a significantly higher level of knowledge regarding sexuality and appeared to have far better life-skills than the respondents from School B. There was, however, no indication that that this knowledge affected their behaviour in any way. This doesn't mean, though, that the programme has been unsuccessful because the programme doesn't only teach abstinence, but also various methods of precaution. The long-term effect of comprehensive sexuality education has not yet been established because there are so few schools implementing it the way it should be and it is currently not implemented at a young enough age. Unhealthy behaviour patterns, reinforced by years of traditions and taboos, as well as the contradicting information given through the media, cannot be changed overnight. The process of intensive comprehensive sexuality education has only started in South Africa and, with time, a change in the behaviour patterns of adolescents and adults is anticipated.

Fiber-optic Fabry-Pérot interferometers (FFPIs) have several advantages such as small size, high resolution, and simple structure. Among them, open-cavity FFPI sensors have high potentials in applications of refractive index (RI) sensing due to the high RI sensitivity. Previous study has proposed a FFPI formed by splicing fibers with a lateral offset, which requires precise alignment and enhances the fabrication difficulty. Moreover, some studies utilize femtosecond lasers to manufacture FFPI sensors, which results in high cost. As a result, we propose a method to simply splice a beveled single-mode fiber (SMF) to a cleaved lead-in SMF to fabricate an open-cavity FFPI. We have also employed chemical etching process to enlarge and control the cavity size. The utilized method is shown to reduce the fabrication difficulty, and no high-cost femtosecond lasers are required. The characteristics of our FFPI are demonstrated through measuring the reflection spectra. It is found that the free spectrum range of the interference fringes decreases with the etching time, and the calculated etching rates of the 3.5°-tiled sample and the 4°-tiled sample are 36.96nm/min and 49.36nm/min, respectively. We then apply the 3.5°-tiled FFPI to environmental parameter sensing. The RI sensitivity of the FFPI is 1202.77nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.3330~1.3478. The temperature sensitivity of the FFPI is only 8.64pm/°C between 25°C~85°C, which indicates that the FFPI can be used without temperature disturbance. In the frequency range of 200Hz~5000Hz, our FFPI exhibits signal-to-noise ratios of 42dB~46dB, which is higher than other FFPI vibration sensors. From the experimental results, our fabricated FFPI sensor indeed has good potentials for the measurement of RI and vibration.

To firmly clamp the workpiece on the table is the most fundamental and important work in milling. You can’t perform precision machining without clamping properly. Use beveled wedge to clamp the workpiece in the vise can achieve the goal of precise clamping. In addition to faster loading and unloading in the vise, beveled wedges can reliably make the bottom of the workpiece attached to the parallel blocks underneath. This study will use five-axis machining center to process beveled wedges of various angles and explore their holding status. Hoping this study can enhance the accuracy and stability of clamping. It is showed by the experiment that the workpiece can steady clamp while the beveled wedge angle is set to 4 ° .

The Coniflex® straight bevel gear (SBG) characteristic is the lengthwise crowning tooth flanks, and thus achieves the advantages of low assemble sensibility and high precision. When the deformation, assembly deviation or manufacturing deviation cause the displacement of assembling position, Coniflex® SBG could preserve the contact situation. This method uses two interlocking disk cutters to generate tooth flanks. The profile of the cutter can generate lengthwise crowning tooth flank. By change the cutter pressure angle, the contact length of gear can be adjusting. Gleason provides No. 102, No. 104, No. 114 and No. 134 straight bevel cutting machine for this gear. Gleason also provides the blank design, cutter design and machine setting calculating instructions. However, the detail of the Coniflex® cutting method is not provided because of commercial considerations. The main goal of this paper is to establish a mathematical model of the tooth surfaces of Coniflex® gears produced by machine No. 104. First, using calculating instructions calculate Coniflex® straight bevel gear blank parameters and tool, mathematical model. Machine settings of the machine are determined from the formulas provided by the machine calculating instructions. The locus of the cutter can be derived using the coordinate transformation method, and their envelope constructs the tooth surface which is solved using the equation of meshing. Two evaluation methods, ease off and tooth contact analysis, are adopted to confirm the correctness of the proposed models. Lastly, to correct the manufacturing deviation. We establish the flank correction method by the optimization method. KlingelnbergP40 export flank deviation report which used for calculating correction of machine setting.

Abstract:

This dissertation is the first architectural history devoted to Beverley Minster, a large and ambitious Gothic church located in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Beverley is one of the most important medieval buildings in England, but it has been almost entirely ignored in the literature. The church is composed of three parts: choir and transepts (c. 1225-1260), nave (c. 1308-c. 1370), and west façade (c. 1380-1420).

The thesis begins with a description of the destroyed buildings that occupied the site during the Saxon and Romanesque periods. The remainder of the dissertation focuses on the work completed at the Minster during the fourteenth century, in the so-called Decorated style. First, the nave is analyzed and its construction is assigned to six campaigns between the years c. 1308-c. 1370. Much discussion is devoted to the "historicism" of the nave's conservative design, which is a subtly modernized version of the east end that preceded it. Contemporary documents also permit discussion of the financial contributions of the laity, canons, and municipal leaders who paid for the nave to be built.

Finally, a detailed analysis is offered for the furnishings made at Beverley between 1292 and c. 1340: the reredos (high altar screen), sedilia (seating for priests), and the destroyed shrine which once contained the relics of St. John of Beverley. Like the nave, they are all neglected masterpieces of the Decorated style.

In recent years, fiber-optic Fabry-Pérot interferometers (FFPIs) have been widely explored in many fields due to their advantages such as small size, simple structure, and the ability of probe sensing. In addition, due to their high sensitives, FFPIs with open cavities have high potential in environmental refractive index (RI) monitoring. Previous studies have proposed open-cavity FFPIs formed by femtosecond lasers or offset fusing method, which results in high cost or enhances the fabrication difficulty. In this thesis, we simply splice an etched beveled multi-mode fiber with a cleaved single-mode fiber to fabricate an open-cavity FFPI. The proposed method can reduce the fabrication difficulty, and no high-cost femtosecond lasers are required. We employ the fabricated open-cavity FFPI sensor to perform the RI, thermal, and pressure sensing. The RI sensitivity of the FFPI is 1219.6nm/RIU as the RI ranged from 1.3330 to 1.3463. The maximum deviation is only 5.15×10-5 RIU, which shows the high sensitivity and great stability of our FFPI. We have also measured the pressure response of our FPI sensor, and the sensitivity is 28.2 pm/psi as the pressure is from 10 psi to 100 psi. Compared with other all-fiber pressure sensors, our fabricated open-cavity FFPI sensor has a higher pressure sensitivity. From the experimental results, our fabricated FFPI sensor indeed has good potentials in the environmental monitoring.

Abstract:
The plays of Beverley Rosen Simons, written over the past thirty years, have had a contentious and underprivileged relationship with Canada's professional theatre companies. Her most famous work, Crabdance, was, however, included in a 2001 anthology of British Columbian plays, bringing Simons' text into the contemporary landscape of Canadian drama. Although the anthology printed her most well-known play, it was written in 1969. Today, she has many scripts that are ready, and have been ready, to be brought to the stage, but they remain unproduced. In 1994, the late Urjo Kareda, Artistic Director of the Tarragon Theatre, cited a specific reason as to why he was unable to support a production of Simons' latest play, now you see it.... The charge levied against the text is that Simons' "technique of simultaneous scenes... exists only in her own imagination ... placing iron clamps around the creativity of both the actors and the director," and thus this play is virtually impossible to produce. The purpose of this thesis is to offer a rediscovery of Simons' work, placing her in the context of Canadian theatre history and providing a brief background on some of her earlier texts. I then provide a comprehensive dramaturgical analysis of her newest unproduced and unpublished play, now you see it.... Since I am preparing this play for production, I will specifically examine the charge laid by Kareda. He was a champion of new Canadian work and a major theatrical force in Canada before his years at Tarragon and beyond. This analysis is specifically geared towards the question of whether or not Simons' challenging dramaturgy, in terms of content and form, is truly too difficult to produce. Through a detailed dramaturgical analysis of the text including characters, setting and synopsis, an examination of thematic devices that Simons employs, and a discussion of the staging issues that arose in a pre-production workshop of the text, I hope to illuminate some of the complexities surrounding the production of this play.

Face-hobbing method is a continuous cutting process. It has high productivity, precision, and produced gears with better contact bearing. Nevertheless, this method is implemented in the hypoid gear and spiral bevel gear cutting process, and generates extended epicycloidal flanks. In 2009, the German company Klingelnberg disclosed a new face-hobbing method for manufacturing the straight bevel gears. Klingelnberg introduced a hypocycloidal straight mechanism for cutting straight bevel gears. In this mechanism, setting the radius of the rolling circle equals to half of the radius of the base circle yields straight lines. The mathematical model of the face-hobbed straight bevel gear developed based on a universal cradle-type face-hobbing bevel gear generator is given. We want to make an experiment to verify the correction of the established mathematical model of face-hobbed straight gear. However, this universal cradle-type generator is a virtual machine, which cannot be used in the real manufacture. Instead, we use the six-axis CNC bevel gear cutting machine as the experiment machine. In this thesis, the machine settings of the six-axis CNC bevel gear cutting machine are derived from the universal cradle-type generator. According to the Gleason Works technical report about the face-hobbing cutting system for spiral bevel and hypoid gears, we program the NC codes for manufacturing face-hobbed straight bevel gears. Furthermore, a flank topographic correction method is developed based on the six-axis CNC bevel gear cutting machine. Finally, in order to verify the six-axis machine settings and the NC codes, the cutting experiment is implemented. The flank deviations of finished gears are obtained by the gear measuring center. And according to the proposed correction method, The corrections on the cutter parameters and machine settings are calculated. The results of experiments verify the correction of proposed mathematical models.

The ConiflexR cutting method developed by Gleason is used to produce straight bevel gear (SBG). This method uses two interlocked cutters to generate a combination of profile and lengthwise crowning in the tooth flanks, and thus achieves the advantages of low assemble sensibility and high precision. However, it is only operated in the dedicated machine. The traditional machine is difficult to be setup as a result of low repeatability. To address this problem, Gleason recently announced that this cutting method can be applied on the modern PHOENIXR CNC machine. However, the details of the ConiflexR cutting method are not provided because of commercial considerations. The main goal of this work is to transform the technology of ConiflexR cutting method to a six-axis CNC bevel gear cutting machine. A mathematical model of ConiflexR SBG is first developed based on the universal bevel gear cutting machine. This model contains three modules: a cutter, an imaginary generating gear, and the relative motion between an imaginary generating gear and the work gear. The correctness of the model is confirmed using the ease-off and tooth contact analysis. Moreover, the cutting NC data is programmed according to the six-axis machine settings which are obtained by the conversion from a universal cradle-type to a six-axis Cartesian-type machine. Finally, the 3D NC simulator developed by our research team is used to verify the correctness of the generated NC data.

Abstract The problem of over ash dispersion through the chimneys of the Hsiehho Thermal Power Station was identified as the degradation of the EP efficiency. According to the specifications set by the PRI, the research program consists of three parts: (1) field tests of flow, temperature, and particle distributions, (2) experimental modeling. In the field test, with home-made bi-directional pitot tube, particle sampling probe, and temperature probe, the flow, temperature, and particle distributions were measured and analyzed. The results of field diagnostics reveal few facts. (1) Temperature distribution is quite uniform. (2) Velocity in the inner part of the cross section of the duct is larger than that in the outer part before the flow is directed into EP. (3) The number 1 and number 2 ducts possess same gas flow rates. However, the particle loading in duct 2 is 30% more than that in duct 1. (4) Particle distributions in the ducts before transferred into the EPs are not seriously non-uniform. The experimental study in the laboratory with 16:1 models of ducts showed several results. (1) Guided vanes installed in the turning angle are proper. The uniform velocity distributions are obtained immediately behind the turns. (2) Some cross blockage bars installed in the outer half of the guided vanes were found when the field test was undergoing. The cross blockage bars make the flow distributions distort both in the field test and the laboratory modeling. (3) Two design methods of the guided vanes were developed in this study. With the results obtained from the field diagnostics and laboratory experiments, concise conclusions and suggestions are numerated.

The use of a porous, hollow polypropylene fiber for sample microextraction in paper spray-mass spectrometry is described. After the microextraction process, one of the end of the hollow fiber was cut into a bevel-shaped, and then used directly for electrospray ionization. Since analytes can be extracted from a very dilute solution using this liquid-liquid extraction process, the limit of detection can be dramatically improved, compared to an ordinary paper-spray mass spectrometry in which a triangular shaped piece of chromatography paper is used. Three types of abused drugs, including p-chloroamphtamine, ketamine and 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine were selected as the test samples. When these abused drugs were spiked into a urine sample, the limits of detection can be improved to 232-fold, 32-fold and 52-fold, respectively. Furthermore, when the optimized experimental conditions were used, the extract can be eluted and ionized during ~1 min. This method is simple and economical, and is suitable for use in the rapid screening of drugs, since it has a high degree of sensitivity, the operating procedure is simple and an ion signal can be observed immediately. We believe this method has the potential for use in practical analyses and can also be regarded as a helpful tool for use, not only in forensic and clinical analysis, but also biomolecules. Further applications are currently being explored.

The electronic products are impacting the whole world in nowadays of the twenty-first century. For instance, using internet by personal-computer or smartphone, it was quite fast and popularly. It is the reason why these electronic devices could show up mainly due to the semiconductor manufacturing's technology and the semiconductor integrated circuits. As the convergence and complexity of electronic devices increase, semiconductor technology has attracted greater promise for function, that benefit by the cost and the time market need. As time goes by, the development of semiconductor and the reason for saving prime cost, the size of silicon wafer gradually increases from 4 inches at the beginning use in industries, to 6 inches, 8 inches to nowadays 12 inches.Quality in the margin zone of wafers is more and more important while the size of devices continuously shrinks and device density continuously enlarges.By the bigger size of silicon wafers, it will bring more challenges to fabrication process, for instance, including precise control of uniformity in film deposition. The remarkable development in etching techniques, although, provides users to perform etching process with increment in etching depth, however, it also induces more by-products and lowers etching quality in the margin zone of wafers.Due to product selling price is proportional to fabrication quality, worldwide manufacturing corporations strive to elevate fabrication quality in the margin zone of wafers. Manufacturing corporations largely invest in numerous researches and methods trying to ameliorate fabrication quality in the margin zone, such as WEE and EBR methods. In this study, we used novel wafer-edge etching technique to remove deposition impurities and by-products during process before development of defects attribute to stress difference between materials and thermal-induced structural flaw, which based on results of in advance observation and analysis of forming defects. We also analyzed effects of cleaning capability of novel etching technique on product quality. The results show that margin zone quality after wafer-edge etching process is indeed better than wafer without treatment under other same controlled conditions. The margin zone quality could be improved up to 10% in 65-nm fabrication. According to the experimental outcome, application of this technique to further process fabrication, significant increase in fabrication quality and beneficial income can be expected eventually.

Fiber-optic Fabry-Pérot interferometers (FPIs) have been widely applied in many fields due to their superior properties such as compact size, high sensitivity, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. In previous research, open-cavity FPIs are usually fabricated by chemical etching or high power laser machining, which potentially has dangers and is expensive. In this thesis we used polished machining to make an open-cavity FPI. The double-polished single-mode fiber (SMF) is spliced with a hollow-core fiber (HCF) to form an open-cavity FPI sensor. The sensing material can be easily placed into the cavity to realize the refractive index (RI) sensing. We used the fabricated FPI for RI, gas pressure, and temperature sensing. In the RI range of 1.333 to 1.3403, the RI sensitivity of our FPI is 1189.80nm/RIU. The sensing response time is 80 ms, and the RI sensing deviation is only RIU. As we control the gas pressure between 0psi to 80psi, the gas sensitivity is 28pm/psi. Compared with other all-fiber gas pressure sensor, our fabricated open-cavity FPI has a larger sensitivity. In addition, after the anneal process to release the residual stress in the FPI, the temperature sensitivity is 3.4pm/℃ as the temperature is between 30℃ to 70℃, which illustrates the FPI can be used without temperature disturbance. As a result, our open cavity FPI sensor has high potential for RI and gas pressure sensing.
