Abstract:
‘Oscar’ is the best-known symbol of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But there is more to the Academy than the golden statuette. The Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, which has been in existence for 80 years, is widely regarded as the pre-eminent research and reference facility for the study of all aspects of motion pictures, as an art form and an industry. The non-circulating research and reference collection, located in Beverly Hills, California, is open to the public, free of charge, and is heavily used by students, scholars, industry personnel, journalists, filmmakers and the general public. Its holdings document the multiple facets of the film industry and its personnel, past and present, and include books, periodicals, clipping files and screenplays, as well as special collections of photographs, manuscripts, posters, graphic art materials, music and recorded sound, and oral histories.

Abstract:
Media environment, emerged from the traditional system of mass communications and enriched with new opportunities for the community, is intensively developing in the modern society. Scientists’ research shows that media defines modern existence, consciousness and values of anindividual and social groups. Media environment acts as the place of human existence and means of influencing his consciousness. The author characterizes the media environment as the social space for the library institution, reveals the possibilities of the public library as the leader of public opinion and identifies technological features of introducing information influence into the library media communications. With the development of the Internet technologies, mass communication has become open and accessible to the library community. Modern library simultaneously acts as an active user ofmedia content and as an actor creating its own media products for a wide audience. However, these opportunities are mainly used for internal purposes: to reflect the life of the institution and to disclose its information resources. The article justifies the possibility of strengthening the social position of the library by assuming the role of the local community information leader. The author comes to the conclusion, that social effectiveness of the library actor behavior in the media environment will be determined by two factors: the correspondence of the communication product to social demands and the power of information influence of the message and social consequences (actions).

Abstract:
Accurate metabolite identification remains one of the primary challenges in a metabolomics study. A reliable chemical spectral library increases the confidence in annotation, and the availability of raw and annotated data in public databases facilitates the transfer of Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC–MS) methods across laboratories. Here, we illustrate how the combination of MS2 spectra, accurate mass, and retention time can improve the confidence of annotation and provide techniques to create a reliable library for all ion fragmentation (AIF) data with a focus on the characterization of the retention time. The resulting spectral library incorporates information on adducts and in-source fragmentation in AIF data, while noise peaks are effectively minimized through multiple deconvolution processes. We also report the development of the Mass Spectral LIbrary MAnager (MS-LIMA) tool to accelerate library sharing and transfer across laboratories. This library construction strategy improves the confidence in annotation for AIF data in LC–MS-based metabolomics and will facilitate the sharing of retention time and mass spectral data in the metabolomics community.

Abstract:
The article introduces the national project Digital Library and Digital Archives (DIKDA) implemented between 2012 and 2015 by the Slovak National Library and its partner the Slovak National Archives. The European Union-funded project is remarkable for its complexity, integrating industrial-scale mass digitisation of printed cultural heritage materials with the improvement of preservation conditions of their physical copies, including their conservation and restoration. The amount of material digitised (over 55 million pages of monographs, serials, articles and special documents so far) and the robust technological infrastructure of mass digitisation make it one of the largest projects of its kind. The article summarises the basic facts about the project and its results and explains in detail its impacts in the area of making the digitised content available to the public, giving special focus to the cultural heritage portal of Slovakiana and related copyright aspects with regard to the out-of-commerce works legislation.

Abstract:
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry is an analytical method that detects macromolecules that can be used for proteomic fingerprinting and taxonomic identification in arthropods. The conventional MALDI approach uses fresh laboratory-reared arthropod specimens to build a reference mass spectra library with high-quality standards required to achieve reliable identification. However, this may not be possible to accomplish in some arthropod groups that are difficult to rear under laboratory conditions, or for which only alcohol preserved samples are available. Here, we generated MALDI mass spectra of highly abundant proteins from the legs of 18 Neotropical species of adult field-collected hard ticks, several of which had not been analyzed by mass spectrometry before. We then used their mass spectra as fingerprints to identify each tick species by applying machine learning and pattern recognition algorithms that combined unsupervised and supervised clustering approaches. Both Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classification algorithms were able to identify spectra from different tick species, with LDA achieving the best performance when applied to field-collected specimens that did have an existing entry in a reference library of arthropod protein spectra. These findings contribute to the growing literature that ascertains mass spectrometry as a rapid and effective method to complement other well-established techniques for taxonomic identification of disease vectors, which is the first step to predict and manage arthropod-borne pathogens.

Abstract:
Obesity rates have been increasing over recent decades, causing significant concern among policy makers. Excess body fat, commonly measured by body mass index, is a major risk factor for several common disorders including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, placing a substantial burden on health care systems. To guide effective public health action, we need to understand the complex system of intercorrelated influences on body mass index. This paper, based on all eligible articles searched from Global health, Medline and Web of Science databases, reviews both classical and modern statistical methods for body mass index analysis. We give a description of each of these methods, exploring the classification, links and differences between them and the reasons for choosing one over the others in different settings. We aim to provide a key resource and statistical library for researchers in public health and medicine to deal with obesity and body mass index data analysis.

Abstract:
Significant changes in the library network development of Tambov region have occurred as a result of reforming the administrative-territorial division. The counties and townships abolition has led to a change of the libraries typology. The Central Provincial Library was first transformed into the Central District Library (before 1934), then - into the Central Municipal one (until 1937), and, finally, to the Regional one (in 1937). A specific feature of the period under review was opening a central library in each district (with a network of mobile libraries), as well as the organizing stationary libraries at enterprises and large state- and collective-farms. Urban population was mostly served by a network of trade union libraries, rural inhabitants - by a library network of the People's Commissariat of Education. In 1940 the number of public libraries in Tambov region reached 552, including 453 ones in the countryside. The network of public (mass) libraries included the following libraries: state district ones - 42, state municipal ones - 4, state rural ones - 102, state children ones - 7, village state public library and reading rooms - 158, public libraries at the regional culture houses and other club facilities - 12, collective-farm ones - 56, trade union ones - 131, public libraries of other agencies and organizations - 27. Strengthening ideological pressure on library services resulted in the tightening of censorship, mass withdrawal of the ideologically harmful literature. Collections of seized books marked «do not give masses» were created in the libraries as special funds. New editions entered the region in a limited number. In general, in the 1930s the book composition in the library stocks of Tambov region is characterized by the following data by branches of knowledge: anti-religious literature was 2,2%, social studies - 19,5%, natural science - 4,6%, applied sciences - 6,2%, agriculture - 5,1%, history and geography - 6,5%, fiction - 28,7%, others - 27,2%. The total library fund had not enough fiction and books on natural history, book sections on technology and agriculture needed accession. By the beginning of 1941 the amount of the public libraries fund in Tambov region was totaled 843,948 copies. To improve significantly the level of library service the nation-wide measures have been taken, among them were the following: Library Campaign, All-Union Library Census, All-Union competition for the best area on performing the librarianship in the countryside. They were aimed at drawing public attention to the serious problems existed in the librarianship. However, the Library Campaign was not properly developed in Tambov region. Scanty funding, general unpreparedness, inadequate qualifications of librarians and other factors affected negatively to achieve this goal.

Are library privacy rights under assault again?Possibly. A new administration in Washington is sending signals that heavy-handed federal guidelines concerning library data may be on the way again. After the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington DC, a group of librarians known as the Connecticut Four stood up to onerous provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act, a brave feat but one of relative anonymity. In this new era, do libraries need a face or a campaign to elevate the fight for privacy in the eyes of the general public? This paper will argue "yes," and conclude with some thought on how such a campaign might manifest itself.

Abstract:
This article reviews the transformation of book culture in the context of activity of modern libraries, as well as the impact of government cultural policy upon this phenomenon. Special attention is given to the changes in the activity of libraries within the framework of national project “Culture” and model standard of the activity of public libraries. In The author underlines the transformation of the phenomenon of library, and the result of these processes reflected in blurring the distinctions between the upmarket and mass, and turning the audience into mass “consumer”. In the course of this research, the author applies functional analysis, dialectical method, and comparative analysis for consideration of the functions of modern library in relation to the historically first forms of their activity. The novelty consists in systemic and nonlinear analysis of the process of transformation of libraries, taking into account incoherence of this process. Emphasis is placed on the transformation of library as a cultural phenomenon, its essence, which leads to the vague understanding of the concept of library, and thus, result, loss of its uniqueness and dysfunction as a sociocultural institution.

Abstract:
One of the system-forming elements in the library sphere are central libraries of the Russian Federation subjects (national, territorial, regional), which provide methodical maintenance of library activities in their region. The main task of methodical centers is to develop and improve methods of work performed by library specialists. The Far Eastern State Scientific Library is the methodical center for public libraries in the Khabarovsk Territory. There is a specialized division – the Department of Research and Methodical work – in its structure. In the course of scientific and methodical activities, the division is implementing information, organizational, research and pedagogical functions, so the structure of the department includes a group of methodical maintenance, a group of specialists engaged in research work, and a licensed center for additional professional training. Well-organized professional communication is the key to the successful development of the region library sector. Consideration of methodological support as an activity to organize and maintain professional communication of library professionals will reveal how effectively such communication is organized, what types, forms and channels of communication are used in the process of methodological support of the library institution activities in the region. The Library gives great attention to the communication formation at various levels (interpersonal, group, mass), and strives to use all available forms (written, spoken, visual) and channels (spoken, document, electronic) of communication. The article objective is to elucidate the Library experience of methodical support of public libraries in the Khabarovsk Territory.

Abstract:
Objective – Analysis and discussion of attitudes of U.K. citizens toward the architecture and design of the country’s public libraries.

Design – Content analysis of essays submitted to the U.K. Mass Observation Archive (MOA).

Setting – Citizens of the United Kingdom.

Subjects – 180 respondents from a panel of 500 Mass Observation Archive (MOA) volunteers.

Methods – The MOA originated in the 1930s as a way to gather qualitative evidence regarding everyday life of the British public. Most of the data gathered takes the form of variable length essays written by a panel of 500 anonymous volunteers. The volunteers respond to specific directives, and in this article, Black summarized responses to a directive he originally posed to the 500 volunteers in 2005: ‘Public Library Buildings’. Black issued this particular directive to the panel of volunteers in the autumn of 2005 and results were made available to the public by mid-2006.The MOA received a total of 180 responses, of which 121 were from women and 59 were from men. Both users of libraries and non-users were included in the sample. The respondents were not a representative sample of the British public because men, ethnic minorities, lower socio-economic groups, and those living outside of the South of England were underrepresented.

The author analyzed the content of the 180 submitted essays to gain insight on attitudes regarding public library design and architecture. Respondents were asked about public library location, environmental fit, architectural style, sensory aspects of the building, and whether or not the building resembled other types of public buildings. Although he posed several questions, Black focused on answers to three questions: what do you think about the design of modern library buildings? Do you prefer them to older style buildings? Have you seen older libraries renovated into more modern libraries, and what do you think of them? Black then analyzed the responses and grouped them into four major attitudes toward the architecture and design of public libraries. The author chose not to code any of the responses and instead chose to analyze the ‘discourse’ in and not necessarily the ‘content’ of the essays. After analyzing the discourse, Black contextualized the evidence he discovered. He then discussed political and cultural issues with relation to the four major attitudes and how these issues affected the current landscape of libraries.

Main Results – The four major categories derived from the essays that Black analyzed included: preference for the new; preference for the old; preference for a mixing of the old and the new; architectural indifference, the library as ‘place’ and the concept of ‘libraryness.’ Those with a preference for the new preferred the newer, more modern building because it fit better within the world of information technology. These respondents also felt that the older buildings were too intimidating and cold. Those who preferred the older architecture and design felt that the buildings allowed them to access a piece of the past, and they thought an older library to be more impressive, historic, and generally have more elaborate and interesting architecture. These respondents pointed out the fewer places to hide in new libraries, and indicated that new architecture is boring and stolid. The third group of respondents preferred an older exterior, but an up-to-date interior with a more modern infrastructure. They enjoyed the large impressive buildings but liked the interior to contain comfortable, modern furniture, good lighting, as well as updated technological tools. Finally, the remaining group of respondents did not place importance on the physical space of a library, but more so the services and collections within the physical space.

Conclusion – The discourse derived from the MOA and analyzed in Black’s article summarizes the attitudes and preferences that citizens of the UK have regarding public library architecture. Among the 180 responses to the ‘Public Library Buildings’ directive, there is a clear tension in these attitudes and preferences. The information gathered in the MOA directive on public libraries could also provide political and cultural leaders with evidence of a need for renewal or rethinking of the country’s public libraries.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the formation and development of system of public libraries in India and their place in the educational, social, cultural and informational space of the country. The formation of the library system in India occurred during the complex colonial and post-colonial periods of its history. It took place in the conditions of underdevelopment, the uneven social, political and cultural development of the regions, ethnolinguistic disunity, and mass illiteracy of the population, dominating in the society of caste, religious and gender prejudices. The article demonstrates that public libraries in India, beginning with their appearance in the first half of the 19th century, had a special mission. They were considered not only as repositories of books, but, first of all, as centers of education, aimed to spread the knowledge, fight with ignorance by introducing to the reading, to raise the cultural and intellectual level of Indian society, thereby contributing to its prosperity. The article describes the main stages and directions of state policy of India in the field of librarianship from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century, recounts the history of the founding of the National library, emphasized the role of Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation. In separate section there is considered the contribution to the library and information science of S.R. Ranganathan, the outstanding leader of Indian culture.

Abstract:
Objective – To investigate the impact of collection size, student population, and faculty population on the use of an e-book collection.

 Design – Longitudinal quantitative analysis.

Setting – Mid-sized public university located in Ontario, Canada.

Subjects – Data from 79,821 e-books related to searches and viewings; data regarding number of e-books held, students enrolled, and faculty employed at institution.

Methods – Numbers of e-books purchased individually and in packages were calculated, followed by the acquisition of annual student and faculty numbers through the University Institutional Planning Office. Searches for and viewings of e-books conducted via vendor websites were obtained directly from vendors. Data for all variables represent years 2002-2010.

Main Results – Very high Pearson’s correlation coefficients of r = 0.96 for searches performed and r = 0.91 for viewings were found in relation to the number of e-books held. While the annual increase in number of viewings was at a rate similar to that of e-books available, a 7% decrease in searches and viewings occurred in 2010. In terms of user populations, doctoral students exhibited the strongest association with e-book collection size followed by undergraduate students and faculty.

Conclusions – Based upon examination of correlation coefficients, the study concludes that the e-book collection size is closely associated with the level of e-book usage. The author notes that the data suggests use of the collection may possibly have leveled off, implying that additional large increases in the e-book collection could incur unnecessary expenditure. “Viewings per e-book” and “searches per e-book” ratios were highest when e-books were obtained on an individual title-by-title basis, though the author cautions that this does not necessarily prove that selective purchasing results in increased use. A deeper quantitative analysis into e-book usage and academic program size is considered for future research, as well as a comparison between electronic reference books and monographs. The author recommends that similar research be performed at other institutions of varying size to determine whether the study’s results would be replicated.

Abstract:
Introduction. The issue of presence/absence of the consequences of technogenic space and rocket activity over the long period is on the agenda of the professional, social, and political communities, especially in regions were the certain territories have been appointed as the fall areas for the separated rocket vehicles parts, including the Republic of Altai.Aim of study. Identification of the chemical composition of snow samples, drinking water, and blood in the population residing in the fall areas of the separated rocket vehicle parts in the Republic of Altai.Material and methods. Identification of the chemical composition has been performed along with the quantitative determination of the content of N-nitrosamines in blood samples (n=50) in n the population who constantly live near to the fall areas of the separated rocket vehicles, as well snow samples (n=7), and drinking water (n=9). The samples were examined by a hybrid method using an Agilent gas chromatograph with a quadrupole mass spectrometric detector. In order to decrypt the results of the mass spectrometric analysis, we used the NIST Mass Spectrometry Data Library 08.L, WILEY275.L, PMW_TOX2.L., libraries of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, narcotic, herbal, toxic and contaminated substances. The quantitative determination of N-nitrosamines in the blood samples was performed by the method of chromatography-mass spectrometry.Results. During the library search, 94% of the studied blood samples in the population registered substances that can be identified as unsymmetric dimethylhydrazine and 6% of the samples contain its decomposition product N-nitrosodimethylamine. However, the probability of categorizing these impurities to the desired substances was of 4-26%. In the blood samples of residents in whom there were identified asymmetric dimethylhydrazine and N-NDMA by quantitative chromatography-mass spectrometric analysis, the tag (Alt+2) N-nitrosodimethylamine and N-nitrosodiethylamine was found in the concentration range of 0.00095-0.346 mg/dm3. In 100% of the studied drinking water samples, residual amounts of asymmetric dimethylhydrazine were identified with a low probability of matching the library mass spectrum of 12-33%.Conclusion. The conducted chromatography-mass spectrometry studies of snow samples, samples of the water, and blood of the population living near to the fall area of the separated rocket vehicle parts in the Republic of Altai allowed establishing the signs of residual quantities of dimethylhydrazine and N-nitrozodimethylamine.

Abstract:
In Technische Universität Darmstadt v. Eugen Ulmer KG, the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ or Court) addressed several important copyright issues stemming from a practice that continues to confound many legal practitioners and adjudicators: the mass digitization of library collections. The judgment adds to an emerging body of jurisprudence decided in the context of a trend toward greater digitization that could ultimately facilitate the development of a global, digital library. To date, the jurisprudence has largely been formed by cases challenging mass digitization that are percolating through the United States courts and have attracted international attention and criticism. The ECJ decision thus provides an important point of reference for evaluating how different jurisdictions balance the rights of authors against the public interest, as served by relevant fair use exceptions consistent with their international obligations under traditional copyright treaties, the 1996 WIPO Copyright Treaty, and the 1994 Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) applicable to all WTO member states.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to provide a systematic review on library and information science (LIS) profession’s image and stereotypes from 1999 to 2013. In particular, it aims to identify and analyze the prevailing images of librarians in various contexts and explore possible changes occurring over time. Design/methodology/approach – The method of systematic review is adopted to identify the prevailing images in LIS profession. Specifically, 60 papers were selected and five main themes emerged such as “public’s perceptions”, “librarians’ perceptions”, “students’ perceptions”, “mass media” and “image as an issue” after a thorough analysis of papers’ aim. Findings – It was found that librarians were negatively perceived by both the wider public and the students. In terms of mass media, the image of “the old maid” was dominant, whereas newspapers focused on the male librarian who was perceived as glamorous. Positive stereotypes were also found in children books. On the whole, librarian’s image and relevant stereotypes have not changed considerably over time. Research limitations/implications – This literature review considered only papers published between 2000 and 2013 and only in English mainly due to language restrictions. Originality/value – This review identifies, critically analyzes and discusses the literature on the prevailing images and stereotypes associated with LIS profession in the past 13 years. In addition, it attempts to identify and discuss any changes that occurred in this time frame.

Hazardous organisms may thrive on surfaces that are often exposed to human contact, including children’s library books. In this study, swab samples were taken from 42 children’s books collected from four public libraries in Texas and California. Samples were then cultivated in brain–heart infusion (BHI) medium and then in Luria broth (LB) medium containing either ampicillin or kanamycin. All 42 samples (100%) were positive for bacterial growth in normal BHI medium. Furthermore, 35 samples (83.3%) and 20 samples (47.6%) in total were positive in LB medium containing ampicillin or kanamycin, respectively. Bacterial populations were then identified in samples using an Orbitrap Fusion™ Tribrid ™ mass spectrometer, a state-of-the-art proteomic analysis tool. Identified bacterial species grown in ampicillin included Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia, Streptococcus, Escherichia, Salmonella, and Enterococcus. In contrast, identified bacteria grown in kanamycin included Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Bacillus. The presences of pathogenic bacteria species were also confirmed. The results of this study warrant follow up studies to assess the potential health risks of identified pathogens. This study demonstrates the utility of proteomics in identifying environmental pathogenic bacteria for specific public health risk evaluations.

Abstract:
AbstractObservations in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) have provided us with a useful set of data in the optical (COMBO-17), near-infrared (GOODS JHK), and mid-infrared (GOODS IRAC bands 1,2) wavelength regimes to test and improve a new spectral galaxy template library, designed to operate in the rest-frame wavelength range between 0.1 and 5 microns. In this range the stellar continuum and emission lines from HII regions dominate the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of galaxies. The new library is based on a self-consistent two-burst model, that has been developed in order to reproduce the star formation histories of different types of galaxies more accurately than single-burst histories and thus provides a better match to real galaxy spectra, as well as more reliable mass-to-light ratios. The spectral library is built by using a population synthesis code (PEGASE) assuming a Kroupa (2003) initial mass function. An old burst of exponentially decaying star formation with an initial metallicity of 0.1 solar is followed by a very recent (60 Myr old) second burst in order to reproduce the spectra of actively star forming blue galaxies. In addition, the templates include dust extinction of various strengths. For the multi-color classification the spectral library is red-shifted between z + 0 and z + 2.5 and converted into the 21 colors which have been observed by COMBO-17 plus its near- and mid-infrared extensions provided by the public GOODS data.

Abstract:
ObjectivesThis study combines chemical analysis and flavour descriptions of flavour additives used in tobacco products, and provides a starting point to build an extensive library of flavour components, useful for product surveillance.MethodsHeadspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to compare 22 commercially available tobacco products (cigarettes and roll-your-own) expected to have a characterising flavour and 6 commercially available products not expected to have a characterising flavour with 5 reference products (natural tobacco leaves and research cigarettes containing no flavour additives). The flavour components naturally present in the reference products were excluded from components present in commercially available products containing flavour additives. A description of the remaining flavour additives was used for categorisation.ResultsGC-MS measurements of the 33 tobacco products resulted in an overview of 186 chemical compounds. Of these, 144 were solely present in commercially available products. These 144 flavour additives were described using 62 different flavour descriptors extracted from flavour databases, which were categorised into eight groups largely based on the definition of characterising flavours from the European Tobacco Product Directive: fruit, spice, herb, alcohol, menthol, sweet, floral and miscellaneous.ConclusionsWe developed a method to identify and describe flavour additives in tobacco products. Flavour additives consist of single flavour compounds or mixtures of multiple flavour compounds, and different combinations of flavour compounds can cause a certain flavour. A flavour library helps to detect flavour additives that are characteristic for a certain flavour, and thus can be useful for regulation of flavours in tobacco and related products.

Abstract:
The article, based mainly on archival documents, considers the process of organizing the work of libraries in districts of the Orel province in the 1920s. Everywhere in towns and villages of the province, there were opened mass public peoples libraries, were created cultural and educational centres, village libraries and reading rooms, clubs, people’s houses and other cultural and educational institutions of new type. The author notes that during that period a lot of work was done in Oryol province to unite libraries into a single network. The article shows that the main “cell” of library network in the village becomes the volost library. Village libraries and reading rooms created in each locality were “the primary focus of cultural and educational work”.Special attention is paid to the study of forms and methods of library services to the population in the volost libraries and village libraries and reading rooms in the 1920s. The political and educational activities of the volost libraries and village libraries and reading rooms were very diverse in the studied period. Taking into account the high level of illiteracy of the population of Oryol villages, libraries preferred active forms of “living word and work with a book”: loud reading, conversation, agitation staging, drama club, illustrative evening, etc. The author notes that special attention was paid to the organization of work with children in the volost library. It is important to understand that along with the common cultural development of the rural population, active propaganda work was carried out in order to solve the current political problems. The 1920s is a separate period of library history, which is interesting for understanding by the modern Russian library science. The author concludes that this material expands and complements the existing understanding in regional library science of the librarianship of the Oryol province of the post-revolutionary decade, proves its stabilizing nature, which laid the basis for mass library construction in the following decades.

Abstract:
The secondary metabolite production of several fungal strains of Aspergillus creber, Aspergillus jensenii, Aspergillus penicillioides, Aspergillus protuberus, Aspergillus vitricola, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Eurotium chevalieri, Eurotium halophilicum, Penicillium brevicompactum and Penicillium chrysogenum were characterised by liquid chromatography tamdem mass spectometry. All fungi were isolated from both air and book covers as well as from settled dust from a contaminated library in Venice (Italy). For A. creber and A. jensenii, we identified sterigmatocystin, methoxysterigmatocystin, versicolorin A and related precursors/side metabolites from the biosynthetic pathways. Deoxybrevianamid E, neoechinulin A, pseurotin A and D, and rugulusovin were principally detected from the strains of E. halophilicum, an emerging fungal species implicated in book contaminations in specific indoor niches. The analysis of settled dust showed a wide range of toxic or bioactive fungal metabolites. Forty-five different metabolites were identified in different concentrations; in particular, high amounts of asperglaucide, alamethicin, andrastin A, terrecyclic acid and neoechinulin A were detected. Also one bacterial metabolite, chloramphenicole was detected. This study increases the knowledge about metabolite production of several fungal species, as well as on the indoor presence of fungi that are not detected by aerobiological sampling. These results emphasise how routine dusting operations are necessary and essential in order to prevent further microbiological developments in library environments.

Abstract:
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing. The unprecedented challenges worldwide implore the urgent development of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. Globally, pharmacists have been delivering important public health services as part of the COVID-19 response. It remains to be seen what role they will play once a vaccine is available. This review examines herd immunity and the potential role of the pharmacy profession in mass vaccination against COVID-19, particularly within the Australian context. Aim: A literature review was conducted to review the global development of COVID-19 vaccines, and the Australian healthcare workforce capability and existing policy for mass vaccination and the potential role of the pharmacist. Method: ScienceDirect, Scopus, The National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), Wiley Online Library, PubMed, and Google Scholar were used to search for relevant literature using keywords COVID-19, vaccines, immunisation, herd immunity, pandemic, pharmacist and Australian healthcare. Results: A large portion of the literature was journal articles, and information from governmental and international bodies such as the World Health Organisation were often referenced. Over 20 million Australians need to be immunised through vaccination or acquire immunity through natural infection for the country to achieve herd immunity for COVID-19. When examining state and territory pandemic plans, pharmacists are underutilised. Modifying legislation to allow pharmacists to administer approved COVID-19 vaccines will enable a trained and skilled workforce to be deployed to increase the rate of mass vaccination. Conclusion: In preparation for a successful COVID-19 vaccine, the Australian Government must consider various elements in their vaccination policy. This includes the estimated herd immunity threshold, methods of vaccine delivery, vaccine clinic locations, staffing arrangements and training, and strategies for vaccine prioritisation. Pharmacists can and should play a key role in the roll out of mass COVID-19 vaccination.

Abstract This article aims to evaluate the anthropometric equations developed by selected studies in order to estimate the body composition of neonates. The systematic review consisted in the research of published articles in the following databases: PubMed, Brazilian Virtual Health Library, Embase and ScienceDirect by utilizing the following descriptors: “fat mass, fat free mass, anthropometry, air displacement plethysmography, validation, neonate”. For doing so, the PRISMA protocol has been utilized. The bibliographical research resulted in 181 articles. However, only eight were selected for the present review because repetition in different databases and having been performed in adults, during pregnancy, in athletes, in preterm and children. There was discrepancy in terms of study method, mainly over the variables of the anthropometric equations, age and ethnicity of the neonates. All studies used the plethysmography method as a reference apart from one study. Only four studies had their equations validated. The studies that developed anthropometric models for estimating the body composition of neonates are scarce, and the use of these equations needs to be conducted carefully in order to avoid errors in nutritional diagnosis.

Abstract During the last decade, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has revolutionized the diagnosis of fungal infections. Recently, a new Conidia ID-fungi plate (IDFP) medium was introduced to facilitate growth and sampling of fungi. This study aimed to evaluate the IDFP for fungal MALDI-TOF MS identification by comparison with a standard fungal growth medium using two reference libraries. A total of 75 filamentous fungal isolates (including 32 dermatophytes) were inoculated on IDFP and Sabouraud-gentamicin-chloramphenicol (SGC) agar and identified by MALDI-TOF MS using formic acid/acetonitrile extraction. Both the commercially available Bruker library (version 2.0) and the public available MSI web application (version 2018) were applied. For 15% of the isolates, a faster growth was noticed on IDFP compared to SGC. IDFP enhanced the performance of fungal identification compared to SGC for both MSI (increase of 16% identifications to genus and 5% to species level) and Bruker library (increase of 22% identifications to genus and 8% to species level). In total, only 73% of the tested isolates were present in the Bruker library compared to 92% for MSI library. No significant difference (P = 0.46) in MALDI score between IDFP and SGC was observed for the MSI library, but scores were significantly (P = 0.03) higher for IDFP when using Bruker library, potentially explained by the prevention of agar contamination by using IDFP since the Bruker database was created from liquid media. IDFP is a promising alternative growth medium for MALDI-TOF MS fungal identification which would strongly benefit from optimizing the Bruker reference library.

Emergency management professionals over the years have realized that preplanning and coordination is essential when mounting an effective reaction to a natural disaster. During Hurricane Katrina, professionals learned that preplanning and preparation must include a plan for responding to the unexpected. Chesterfield County, VA learned this lesson in 2011 during Hurricane Irene when unexpected events required adjusting the plan. The amount of damage caused by Irene was minimal compared to Katrina but the impact of responding to unexpected needs was just as compelling. During Irene and other natural disasters that followed the Chesterfield County Public (CCPL) became a key component in meeting unexpected needs mass care and communications. CCPL can now serve as an information hub, double as a daytime relief shelter and participate in mass feeding if necessary during emergency situations. Abstract:
Background: Excessive use of antibiotics accelerates the acquisition/spread of antimicrobial resistance. A systematic review was conducted to identify the components of successful communication interventions targeted at the general public to improve antibiotic use. Methods: The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched. Search terms were related to the population (public, community), intervention (campaign, mass media) and outcomes (antibiotic, antimicrobial resistance). References were screened for inclusion by one author with a random subset of 10% screened by a second author. No date restrictions were applied and only articles in the English language were considered. Studies had to have a control group or be an interrupted time-series. Outcomes had to measure change in antibiotic-related prescribing/consumption and/or the public’s knowledge, attitudes or behaviour. Two reviewers assessed the quality of studies. Narrative synthesis was performed. Results: Fourteen studies were included with an estimated 74–75 million participants. Most studies were conducted in the United States or Europe and targeted both the general public and clinicians. Twelve of the studies measured changes in antibiotic prescribing. There was quite strong (P < 0·05 to ≥ 0·01) to very strong (P < 0·001) evidence that interventions that targeted prescribing for RTIs were associated with decreases in antibiotic prescribing; the majority of these studies reported reductions of greater than −14% with the largest effect size reaching −30%. Conclusion: Multi-faceted communication interventions that target both the general public and clinicians can reduce antibiotic prescribing in high-income countries but the sustainability of reductions in antibiotic prescribing is unclear.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a rational and sustainable division of labor between national libraries and the information industry for the preservation of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a based on remarks presented by the author at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the National Repository Library of Finland, held in Kuopio on May 21-22, 2015. Findings – Crafting a useful new role for libraries will require imagination and curatorial rigor, capabilities that the industry has found in the past, and can summon once again. No templates for such a role exist, but must be newly invented by the current generation of librarians. This is a tall order in an era of diminishing public funding for libraries and archives. But it will be essential if libraries are to continue to be key institutions of civil society. Originality/value – There are formidable challenges to ensuring a rational and sustainable division of labor for the preservation of knowledge and many of those challenges will not be solved by new technologies alone. But the discussion needs to move beyond dated, late twentieth century strategies like mass digitization of books and “web archiving”.

Abstract:
Objectives: In this study, we systematically synthesized scientific evidence on pork consumption in relation to body weight and composition among adults. Methods: We performed a keyword search using Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. We conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the pooled effect size of pork consumption on body weight and composition. Results: Overall, 12 studies met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review. Among the experimental studies without daily total energy intake restrictions, pork intake was associated with a reduction in body weight by 0.86 kg (95% CI = 0.17-1.55) and body fat percentage by 0.77% (95% CI = 0.11%-1.43%); pork intake was not associated with change in lean mass. Among the experimental studies with energy restrictions, pork intake was associated with a reduction in body weight by 5.56 kg (95% CI = 0.55-10.59), lean mass by 1.50 kg (95% CI = 1.39-1.62), and fat mass by 6.60 kg (95% CI = 6.42-6.79). Among the observational studies, pork intake was not associated with overweight/obesity. Conclusions: Findings on pork consumption in relation to body weight/composition differed by study design. Future experimental studies using representative samples are warranted to examine the effect of fresh/lean pork consumption on body weight and composition in the general population and by subgroups.
