Over the last decade, sanctuary has been evoked as an alternative to the problems associated with an exclusionary statist asylum regime. In Canada, the United States, and Europe, a “cities of sanctuary” movement has emerged, articulated through various political vocabularies. This movement conceives of sanctuary not simply as a church-based site where asylum seekers may be secured but offers a host of welcoming practices within and beyond cities. This article specifically explores the UK-based City of Sanctuary movement, with a focus on the case of Glasgow, which has widely been read as exempl

However, our sources for pilgrimage, both literary and archaeological, vary widely in quality and volume, and modern scholarship has often depended heavily on the evidence from particular wellknown sites, most notably the sanctuary of St Menas at Abu Mina in Egypt. This site has revealed a remarkable density of archaeological remains, not only buildings but also the production and circulation of a wide variety of pilgrim souvenirs. The topic of the sanctuary pursued by Elizabeth Allen invites critical examinations of the relationship between the secular and the spiritual authorities in the Middle Ages and beyond. The desperate desire of a condemned fellow about to be executed or of a group of people facing nearly certain death to find sanctuary in a church, at a cross, a saint’s grave, or simply at the feet of a bishop was a source of much debate. If sanctuary was granted, then divine laws overruled worldly laws, and it pitted the representatives of the Church against the king, the royal court, or the legal courts. But a

Red-figure pottery first achieved prominence in the modern world through antiquarianism and the collection of souvenirs on the Grand Tour. This fundamentally shaped the scholarship of this class of pottery. Vases were valued for their completeness, their iconography—scenes depicting Greek myth and literature being particularly prized—and their aesthetic qualities. Famous private collections were formed, many of which subsequently entered the world's great museums. Less value was placed upon the vessels as archaeological objects. The contexts in which they were found, their associations with ot

AbstractAt the heart of the Thesmophoria festival lies the story of Persephone and the promise of agricultural fertility, but scholars point out that more seems to be at stake, suggesting that the scene of women ‘camping out’ in the sanctuary under the control of the female archons recalls a primitive time when women, perhaps, ruled the city or that the festival creates a place where women are at least beyond the control of men. There are hints, moreover, that during the Thesmophoria women were also actively involved in some kind of juridical activity, especially on the second day of the festi

Abstract:
This study examines the typological interpretation of the Seven Feasts of Israel through biblical exegesis and theological research, identifying their symbolic significance and ultimately illuminating how these feasts reflect God's redemptive plan and eschatological fulfillment. First, the fact that Israel’s earthly sanctuary was built as a model of the heavenly sanctuary suggests that the feasts are not merely annual observances but rather embody profound redemptive-historical meaning. This establishes a foundation for interpreting the feasts beyond their historical context through typology.

Abstract: Narratives about Alexander the Macedonian's life were extremely popular throughout the Middle Ages all over Europe and beyond. Crossing cultural boundaries, they were also adopted and adapted for a Jewish readership. In the latter context, the episode about the king's visit to Jerusalem served as a topos of interreligious encounter between the Jews and their non-Jewish rulers. It was first told by Flavius Josephus in the first century as a tale that sets idolatry in contrast with monotheism. Among other episodes, the text reports a dramatic encounter with the Jewish high priest. In m

With the 1990s, after the communist regime collapsed in Romania, the reading public could see the rapidly increasing publication of poetry composed by former prisoners of conscience. Still, to this day, such works have remained a somewhat peripheral concern of literary critics and the society alike. These writings, nevertheless, have a lot to offer in terms of meanings, beyond the aesthetic plane, in gaining further insight into the human condition and creativity amid traumatic circumstances. The internal orientation of the sanctuaries suggested by the cult image, however, shows a great homogenity and uniformity. The internal structure is organised on the possible axial line drawn from the entrance to the cult image, and continues beyond that. We can establish that the interior of a mithraeum is oriented along the ‘North-South – East-West’ frame of reference by the cult image. The idea of conscience is a key concept in both Western and Eastern theologies. Beyond fundamental similarities in content, the specific accents in Eastern Orthodox theology are also worth considering. Here, the phenomenon of conscience is never simply treated as an ethical, philosophical or psychological entity, but the patristic, liturgical and spiritual dimensions are also an essential part of the discussion, which is in this manner always theonomous. Instead of a law-centered approach, Orthodox theology is personalistic and liturgical: conscience is the sanctuary of an encounter with God.
