Abstract:
In the traditional statistical framework, nonsignificant results leave researchers in a state of suspended disbelief. In this study, we examined, empirically, the treatment and evidential impact of nonsignificant results. Our specific goals were twofold: to explore how psychologists interpret and communicate nonsignificant results and to assess how much these results constitute evidence in favor of the null hypothesis. First, we examined all nonsignificant findings mentioned in the abstracts of the 2015 volumes of Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General,

Abstract:
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are often characterized by atypical sensory behavior (hyper- or hyporeactivity) although evidence is scarce regarding olfactory abilities in ASD; 16 adults with high-functioning ASD (mean age: 38.2, SD: 9.7) and 14 healthy control subjects (mean age: 42.0 years, SD: 12.5) were assessed in odor threshold, free and cued odor identification, and perceived pleasantness, intensity, and edibility of everyday odors. Although results showed no differences between groups, the Bayes Factors (close to 1) suggested that the evidence for no group differences on the threshold

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:Replicated evidence indicates that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show disproportionate increases in hyperactivity/physical movement when their underdeveloped executive functions are taxed. However, our understanding of hyperactivity’s relation with set shifting is limited, which is surprising given set shifting’s importance as the third core executive function alongside working memory and inhibition. The aim of this study was to experimentally examine the effect of imposing set shifting and inhibition demands on objectively measured activity le

Abstract:
Alcohol and study list repetition were used to manipulate encoding quality to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying false memories. The DRM paradigm (Deese 1959b; Roediger & McDermott 1995) was used to elicit false memories. Participants studied lists of words (veridical items) which were semantically related to a critical non-presented item, which, if erroneously endorsed, served as the measure of false memory. Implicit and explicit tests of memory were used, and remember know judgments were also taken. An anterograde impairment of memory after alcohol was obtained for veridical items u

Abstract:
Dopamine and 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate-regulated neuronal phosphoprotein (DARPP-32) is a critical mediator of neuroplasticity in striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs). The work presented in this thesis used a global gene knockout (KO) construct to investigate the role of DARPP-32 in reward-based learning and performance. Global deletion of the DARPP-32 gene disturbed performance during the intertemporal (delay) discounting procedure. DARPP-32 KO mice were less sensitive than their wildtype (WT) littermates during long delays to reinforcement. In comparison to WT mice, DARPP-32 KO mic

Davies, Geoff. "A metacognitive account for the relationship between neurocognition and functional outcome in first-episode psychosis." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61167/.

Abstract:
Neurocognitive and functional outcome deficits have long been acknowledged in schizophrenia and are considered a core feature of the disorder. Neurocognition has been found to account for functional disability to a greater extent than psychopathology however much of the variance in functional outcome still remains unexplained. How functional outcome is measured also requires clarification. By investigating the relationship between neurocognition and functional outcome in First-Episode Psychosis (FEP), much can be learnt about the trajectory of disability and the course of illness in schizophre
