Himanshu and Sunayana Sharma. "Role of Trikatu Gutika and Yoga Therapy Bhujangasana in the management of Madhumeh (Diabetes)." Journal of Ayurveda and Integrated Medical Sciences 9, no. 10 (2025): 123–26. https://doi.org/10.21760/jaims.9.10.20.

Full text
Abstract:
Trikatu Gutika is an Ayurvedic formulation composed of three potent herbs: Pippali (Piper longum), Maricha (Piper nigrum), and Shunthi (Zingiber officinale). Known for its heating properties, Trikatu is primarily used to enhance digestion, boost metabolism, and improve bioavailability of other medicines. This combination acts as a digestive stimulant, carminative, and aids in breaking down Ama (toxins), thus playing a role in detoxifying the body. Its utility in managing obesity, respiratory issues, and metabolic disorders like hyperlipidemia and diabetes is also recognized. By stimulating Agni (digestive fire), Trikatu Gutika helps regulate blood sugar levels, making it useful in managing diabetes (Madhumeha). This abstract highlights Trikatu Gutika's significance in Ayurvedic practice for its effectiveness in enhancing the body's metabolic functions and treating conditions related to impaired digestion and metabolism. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) is a beneficial Yoga posture in managing Madhumeh (diabetes). Practicing Bhujangasana helps stimulate the pancreas, encouraging insulin production and improving glucose metabolism. The backward bending of the spine in this pose stretches the abdominal muscles, massages the internal organs, and enhances circulation to the pancreas, liver, and kidneys, which are vital for controlling blood sugar levels. Regular practice of Bhujangasana helps reduce stress, a contributing factor to diabetes, and enhances the body's ability to utilize insulin more effectively. This abstract discusses Bhujangasana's role in managing diabetes through its physiological effects, supporting holistic health, and promoting better glycemic control in individuals with diabetes.

Abstract:
Background: Chronic Low back pain (LBP) is among the most prevalent conditions distressing the adult population worldwide. The use of complementary and alternative medicinal (CAM) therapies for the management of LBP have rapidly gained popularity, where Yoga is being widely used as mind-body CAM therapy for relieving back pain. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of Sphinx Yoga Pose (Salamba Bhujangasana), in managing CLBP and to measure the variations in the disability index, quality of life, and stress scores.
Methodology: A randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted including the Nurses and midwives. Numerical Pain Rating (NPR) Scale, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire, Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) will be used for initial screening. Subjects meeting inclusion criteria will be randomly assigned to either of the study group i.e. Group A (Experimental) and Group B (Control). The Group A subjects will be assigned with Sphinx Yoga therapy for 12 weeks while group B subjects will be assigned to usual care. Pre and post samples will be collected for Substance P (SP), Beta Endorphins (β-Endorphin), and Cortisol. Moreover, Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability index, World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) and Sadaf Stress Scale (SSS), will be used at baseline and after 12 weeks follow-up (post-intervention).
Discussion: Offering a 12-week Yoga therapy to the subjects with CLBP might give an insight into its application and efficacy. To be precise, the findings of this research will support the wider implementation of Sphinx Yoga as a lifestyle intervention.
Trial registration: The trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04721639).

Abstract:
Lifestyle diseases share risk factors similar to prolonged exposure to three modifiable lifestyle behaviors -- smoking, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity -- and result in the development of chronic diseases, specifically heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and some types of cancer. Hypertension is one of them. It is defined as the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the body’s arteries, the major blood vessels in the body. It is called a "silent killer". Most people with hypertension are unaware of the problem because it may have no warning signs or symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to disability or even a deadly heart attack or stroke. Treatment and lifestyle changes can help in reducing Hypertension. Yoga can be preliminarily recommended as an effective intervention for reducing blood pressure. Yoga improves flexibility, reduces stress levels, and causes strengthening of muscles. Certain asanas like Bhujangasana, Setubandhasana, Ardhachakrasana, Uttanasana, Padottanasana, Ardhachandrasana, Tadasana, Shalabhasana, and Shavasana are found beneficial in Hypertension. Shavasana was mostly used for relaxation or as the starting pose for asanas.

Abstract:
One of the most prevalent issues among patients in their middle years is vertigo. The existence of so-called cervical vertigo among the different causes of dizziness is still debatable. Based on the research of cervical vertigo was once believed to be caused by aberrant input from cervical sympathetic nerves. Later studies discovered that sympathetic stimulation has no effect on cerebral blood flow. Some studies made the hypothesis that diseases of vertigo of cervical origin can be associated to aberrant sensory input from the damaged joint receptors of upper cervical areas. Additional research revealed that cervical intervertebral disc disease appears to be the source of cervical vertigo. According to recent studies, vertigo of cervical origin may be associated to the in growth of many Ruffini corpuscles into degenerative cervical discs. Generally, the symptoms of Vertigo are not visible at the initial time, some time people consider it as epilepsy or brain related disease, first of all, it is necessary to diagnose and treat it properly. Yoga is an alternative therapy for any kind of cervical related problems, in which some special Asanas like Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Makarasana, Ardhamatsyendrasana, Akaranadhanurasana and Pranayama such as NadiShodhan, Bhramari, and Udgeetha. Which is helpful in this type of pain, it has been seen from many studies that yoga may work as a shield for spinal card related problems.

Abstract:
Thyroid diseases (TD) involve impaired secretion of thyroid hormones and are more prevalent in women. Risk factors include older age, family history of thyroid disease, hypertension, obesity, pregnancy, and diabetes. Psychological manifestations such as depression and mania are closely associated with TD, necessitating a mind–body-based complementary approach like Yoga. To examine the effectiveness of Yoga on the physiological and psychological symptoms of TD. A systematic search was conducted on three databases – PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science in September 2023 using the keywords (Yoga AND Thyroid Disease, Yoga AND Thyroid Disorder, Yoga AND Thyroid Disorders, etc.,) and 39 results were identified while 34 results were obtained through other sources, hence 73 in total. After removing ten duplicates, and 6 nonrelevant studies, 57 were screened. Finally, 13 studies were selected for the qualitative analysis after the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. 9 of 13 studies involving 389 thyroid patients focused on hypothyroidism cases only. Most common Yoga practices were suryanamaskara, bhujangasana, matsyasana, sarvangasana, halasana, ujjayi pranayama, anulomvilom/nadishodhana, bhastrika pranayama, bhramari pranayama, kapalbhati, and jalandhara bandha. Studies revealed a trend toward balance in thyroid hormone, reduction in psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety, and depression, and improvement in the quality of life of thyroid patients through Yoga. Yoga has shown beneficial effects in managing the symptoms of TD, especially in hypothyroidism management. However, more randomized controlled trials incorporating larger sample sizes are needed to establish the results. Furthermore, there remains a dearth of research on the efficacy of Yoga in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and other TD.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Infertility presents multifaceted challenges that encompass both physical and emotional burdens. Yoga, as a comprehensive system of mind–body medicine, serves as an effective intervention for managing male factor infertility, a complex lifestyle disorder with significant psychosomatic elements. This review explores the transformative role of yoga in addressing both the emotional and physical dimensions of infertility. By incorporating physical postures, breath control and meditation, yoga promotes emotional well-being and enhances reproductive health by improving the integrity of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes as well as the epigenome. In addition, yoga contributes to maintaining sperm telomere length through the regulation of seminal free radical levels and increased telomerase activity, which are crucial for optimal embryo cleavage and the development of high-quality blastocysts. Integrating yoga as an adjunctive therapeutic approach fosters a supportive intrauterine environment and facilitates physiological homoeostasis, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful fertilisation and implantation. Gentle asanas and flowing sequences promote relaxation, alleviate tension and cultivate emotional stability, while meditation aids in emotional healing and resilience during the infertility journey. Specific asanas, such as Baddha Konasana (bound angle pose), Bhujangasana (cobra pose) and Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), stimulate reproductive organs, enhance blood circulation and regulate hormone production. Pranayama techniques further support endocrine balance and overall vitality. Moreover, yoga provides a non-invasive strategy for managing fertility-related conditions leading to improved reproductive health and overall well-being. This review aims to elucidate the comprehensive role of yoga in improving male infertility, focusing on its impact on sperm nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, the epigenome and telomere health. In addition, it underscores the importance of self-care, open communication and shared experiences with partners. Practicing yoga regularly supports psychosocial well-being, promotes holistic healing, enhances physical and mental health and probably helps in improving reproductive health, thereby fostering resilience and self-efficacy throughout the journey of fertility and reproduction.
