The aim of this dissertation was to address a theoretical debate on belief bias. Belief bias is the tendency for people to be influenced by their prior beliefs when engaged in deductive reasoning. Deduction is the act of drawing necessary conclusions from premises which are meant to be assumed as true. Given that the logical validity of an argument is independent of its content, being influenced by your prior beliefs in such content is considered a bias. Traditional theories posit there are two belief bias components. Motivated reasoning is the tendency to reason better for arguments with unbe

Detecting animals during wildlife surveys underpins the validity of outcomes for pest control, conservation and research. Most surveys rely on animals deciding to engage with a device, hoping the reward outweighs any perceived danger. Animal personality, however, can shape risk-reward decisions by individuals, potentially driving heterogeneity in detection probability and undermining sampling reliability. In this thesis, I investigated personality as a mechanistic driver of detection bias and examined interactions between personality and the risk-reward properties of different survey methods.

Abstract:
Three common methods have been used to assess the existence of rating bias in performance ratings: the total association approach, the differential constructs approach and the direct effects approach. One purpose of this study was to examine how the direct effects approach, and more specifically differential prediction analysis, is more useful than the other two approaches in examining the existence of rating bias. However, the usefulness of differential prediction depends on modeling the full rater race X ratee race interaction. Therefore, the second purpose of this study was to examine th

Pou

Abstract:
This study compared three methods of detecting test item bias, the chi-square approach, the transformed item difficulties approach, and the Linn-Harnish three-parameter item response approach which is the only Item Response Theory (IRT) method that can be utilized with minority samples relatively small in size. The items on two tests which measured writing and reading skills were examined for evidence of sex and ethnic bias. Eight sets of samples, four from each test, were randomly selected from the population (N=7287) of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students enrolled in a large, urban sch

Abstract:
A method to perform implicit path delay fault grading on GPGPU architectures is presented. Experimentally it is shown that it is over 1200x faster than a single-core implicit path delay fault grading method previously in the literature for higher accuracy and can be shown to scale to multiple GPGPUs. A post-silicon test pattern generation strategy to maximize the efficiency of broadside tests applied to a sequential design for a limited test budget is presented. Arguments are made for this approach for detecting embedded Trojan ICs in the next-state functions of a sequential system; they are

Abstract:
A fault detection and correction methodology for user positioning systems based on Kalman filtering is presented in this thesis. To develop this methodology, various aspects of the design of positioning systems are taken into account, such as the dynamic models of the systems, the definition of the estimation technique, the available technology and the environment (to identify disturbances that can affect the systems).<br/>In the first phase, the available technologies were identified, and the algorithms and the physical-mathematical models were defined for the positioning systems for both ind

Abstract:
Modern physics largely relies on the power of colliders to investigate the fundamental aspects of nature. The search for new particles often implies looking for a resonance over a continuous background and it is essential to know the background's shape with high accuracy in order to detect a possible signal. In this work the impact of the background modelling on the signal yield is investigated. This is done by calculating the bias associated with an incorrect choice of the background function and how this systematic error depends on the collected luminosity. Fits are done using different func
