Abstract:
The question of the fate of Paulinism in late antiquity, a point of controversy in early Christian studies especially since Adolf von Harnack, has benefited from fresh attention in recent research, even as, simultaneously, there is ever less agreement among New Testament scholars on the question of what Paulinism actually is. This state of affairs comes sharply into focus in Todd Still and David Wilhite's edited volume Tertullian and Paul, the first in a new series from T&T Clark on the reception of Paul in the church fathers. Reading and assessing Tertullian and Paul is a sometimes dizzyi

Among the Taylor-Schechter Collection in the University Library Cambridge there are still Christian-Palestinian-Aramaic (CPA) fragments which have yet to be identified. One such fragment, T-S 12.742, was published for the first time in 1900 by A. Lewis and M. Gibson, though scarcely any of the text had been read.2 Like all the other CPA fragments of earlier date, T-S 12.742 is a vellum palimpsest, and has a small part of another page attached to it (see plates). The CPA script underneath the Hebrew square letters is very faint and consists of two unheaded columns of 24 lines each on both sides

Abstract This article presents the first comprehensive study of Syriac rhetoric in late antiquity. It builds on existing scholarship on the Syrians’ engagement with Graeco-Roman paideia and Christian rhetoric, but it also goes further in that it draws attention to the Syrians’ participation in Near Eastern rhetorical traditions (mainly transmitted through Aramaic) and in the rhetoric of the Hebrew Bible, which was translated into Syriac without Greek intermediaries. At the same time, this article demonstrates that Syriac rhetoric flourished in distinctive and original ways: It developed its ow

The Aramaic Targum of Isaiah is a part of the Targum of Jonathan, which is the “official” Targum of the Prophets section of the Jewish Bible. The creation of this text, written in literary Western Aramaic by various translators and editors, is debated among scholars. The Targumist transformed the Hebrew original to address exegetical problems known to them. While dating and theological features of the Targum of Isaiah have been studied, the translation techniques used by the Targumist are not well understood. This article aims to examine the techniques used by the Targumist when translating pa

The references in the Bible to Ararat and the interpretations and location of the Mountains of Ararat are carefully considered in light of evidence from the Greco-Roman world, the Bible versions, Josephus, Byzantine Chronicles, and the Armenian sources, particularly P‘awstos. Other biblical passages that have been taken to refer to Armenia and the Caucasus are analyzed, including Isaiah 37:38 and Jeremiah 51:27 as they are interpreted in the Greek and Aramaic translations.
