In doing the translation, the translator should be able to retain the meaning in the target language to make an equivalent translation. According to Catford (1974: 50) translation equivalence occurs when a SL text and TL text of items are relatable to the same features of substance. He also states that the aim in total translation must, therefore, be to select TL equivalents not with the same meaning as the SL items, but with the greatest possible overlap of situational range. From that statement, it can be concluded that the translation is the process to transfer the same function by using th

Most public communication in the ancient world was oral. Given that the first-century world of the Bible can be labeled as a period where people preferred the spoken word over the written word, and Jesus’ parables were shared by word of mouth, it seems crucial to analyze the oral traits found in the written text of the parables. Biblical performance criticism is a methodology which analyzes texts that were intended primarily for oral delivery. Utilizing performance criticism, this article will investigate the so-called banquet parable recounted in Luke 14:15–24, with the intent to discover its

Dick T. Cole's critique of our integration of Piagetian learning theory and Christ's parabolic method focuses on two primary concerns. The first concern is that the Bible should not be used as data, and the second that current psychological concepts cannot be meaningfully related to biblical times. In response to these concerns it is argued that the parables are recorded lessons and not theological concepts as Cole suggests, that the underlying structure of biblical lessons is relevant to modern learning theory, and that cultural specificity does not hinder the learning process but rather is a

The parables of Jesus in Luke are the object of investigation. The witness of the Church Fathers in the form of their allegorical exegesis of the text of the New Testament is employed to explain variant readings of the Bezan text. The notion that the harmonising tendency in the accounts of the Gospels is simply due to embarrassment is challenged. AbstractThis chapter examines further considerations derived from the research.Institutional factors related to religion exert a stronger structural and long-term influence on prosperity (competitiveness and corruption) than the cultural influence of religion (adherents).Prosperity and educational differences between Protestants (higher) and Roman Catholics (lower) are still evident in Germany and Switzerland. Such differences are even more prominent comparing national levels (cross-country) throughout Europe and the Americas.Thousands of years of hegemony characterise the Roman Catholic Church as a global political-religious institution. The associated corruption in all the countries under its influence may well be related to the corrupt fruits for which “we shall know them” in the parable of Jesus (King James Bible, 1769, Matthew 7:15–23). Among others, these fruits have also been the abuse scandals, maintenance of ignorance, and persecution of God’s Word, in the name of Jesus Christ. The results of this study open up various avenues for future research. The QCA evidence generated here allows further analysis of every country in Europe and the Americas. Future research might also continue to apply the vast amount of information collected and already codified in this study.

Abstract Eighteenth-century deists imagined they had deflated the overweening pretensions of Christian theology. Toland, Chubb, and Tindal figured they had exposed traditional Christianity’s universal claims as in fact restricted to a small corner of the planet .and shown the volumes of Calvinist thought to have been the product of fanciful imaginations. The deists’ challenge to orthodoxy was a formidable one: the God of orthodoxy, they avowed, had not revealed himself in history and the Bible. The true God whose will was enshrined in a few simple moral dictates could be discovered by the human mind. But the God of Calvin and Edwards was nowhere to be found in the real world because his supposed revelations were in fact chimerical. To put it charitably, he was silent.

Abstract:
The novels of three female Victorian novelists are compared in this chapter: George Eliot’s Adam Bede; Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South; and Margaret Oliphant’s Kirsteen. From different religious perspectives (agnosticism, Unitarianism, and a broad orthodoxy) each connects to the Prodigal Son in different ways as they seek to explore the conflict in their characters between family responsibilities and the drive for independence. The role of the Bible, and of parables in particular, in each novel is discussed, before the identification of characters with figures in the parable of the Prodigal Son is compared. It is argued that each novelist reads the motivation behind the Prodigal’s leaving differently, and raises the question of whether or not his departure was justified.

Abstract:
This book chapter explores relevant data on diversity in the Bible and the life, ministry, and teachings of the historical Jesus. It is evident that the Bible, both in its contexts and contents, is replete with diversity. Starting from the creation narrative, the social and ethnic make-up of the biblical world is marked by diversity. The creation narrative in Genesis 1-2, the progenitor is simply called “adam,” which means “humankind.” Adam and Eve were not Europeans, Jews, or Africans. Their tribal default and ethnic identity are unknown, they were simply the progenitors of all peoples and tribes. Israel was ethnically diverse, which mirrors the ethnic configuration of the biblical world. Likewise, the historical Jesus ministered to both the Jewish people and the Gentiles. In his teachings and parables, Jesus made reference to non-Jewish individuals in commendable ways. Paul followed this similar path by emphasising active unity in the church, the type of unity that joins together diverse ethnic groups because of their common identity and position in Jesus Christ.

Abstract:
Biblical stories, tropes and images, and also the diction and syntax of the King James Version, are manifest throughout Lawrence’s oeuvre at the levels of form, plot and character. By approaching formal and thematic borrowings through the prism of recent developments in studies of Biblical aesthetics, this chapter demonstrates how Lawrence’s textual dynamics proceed from a sustained dialogue with the Bible that both demotes conventional beliefs and articulates his vision of the world. First, Lawrence’s pervasive use of Old Testament features and Hebrew poetry is reassessed to show how he valued the Bible as an aesthetic text. The chapter then instantiates how the Parables’ rhetorical strength is embedded in Lawrence’s narratives. Lastly, it examines how Lawrence’s artistic appropriation of Hebrew poetic forms and pagan imagery from the Book of Revelation restores pre-Christian image-thought.

Abstract ssThis chapter highlights African American actor, writer, director, and producer Tyler Perry, whose films show the grace of Jesus being manifested amid gritty and often graphic portrayals of the human condition. These are not sanitized versions of middle-class evangelical Protestant Christian families, but depictions of familial and community loyalty in the face of hardships. Such portrayals, as in the romantic drama Why Did I Get Married?, tap into the message of the Bible itself as well as a long Black Protestant Christian tradition of Jesus as an ever-present help in times of need. Perry’s Black characters—who are generally more complex than church lady Madea, his famous screen alter ego—enact cinematic parables that interpret Jesus as consistently present, accessible, and One with oppressed Black men and women in their darkest times.
