Abstract:
The SIMBAD astronomical database hosted by the CDS provides basic data, cross-identifications, bibliography and measurements for astronomical objects outside the solar system. The CDS receives the bibliographic meta-data of the articles published in the main astronomical journals directly from the publishers. How we receive the data and their format vary from one publisher to the next. These data are first extracted and stored in files with a standardised format. Then, to avoid errors or misprints, we perform different tests on these data: - Author names are compared to a reference list maintained at CDS, and the keywords are compared with the AAS list - Astronomical objects are verified by checking their name in the SIMBAD database - A completion test checks that all of articles of a journal volume are present The next step identifies whether an astronomical object appears inside a title, a keyword or an abstract, and if so, we add a link to the object in SIMBAD. Once all of the verifications and corrections have been made we add the meta-data into SIMBAD. We also add other information such as the number of different astronomical objects studied in the paper, the presence tables and their links to VizieR, any new acronyms, as well as some comments. New developments are in progress to automatically extract the data from the tables in the articles (that have not been processed by, or provided to VizieR) . In addition, each night automatic checks are executed to list the new data and to test the coherence of these data in SIMBAD.

"When approaching to the study on women’s artistic creation in Canary Islands for eighteenth century, the lack of bibliographical and documented references has to be added to the difficulty on finding their artistic works. In spite of it, we found the names and bibliographic references about women who carried on artistic activities in Canary Islands during the century, such as the case of María Joaquina Viera y Clavijo, Josefa Miranda and Juana Evangelista de la Cruz y Ríos."

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study is to synthesize the existing evidence on Goal Directed Perfusion Methods: The search for the existing evidence was made in the MEDLINE databases, using the PubMed search engine. The initial search term was “goal directed perfusion.” In order to narrow the search, MeHS terms such as “cardiac surgery” and “cardiopulmonary bypass” were used together with the initial term and the Boolean operator AND. Results: At first, 238 references were obtained, combined whit “cardiac surgery” there were 49 references and finally whit “cardiopulmonary bypass” 21. We read 23 articles. Levels of oxygen delivery (DO2i) > 272 ml/min/m2, minimize hemodilution an maintain hematocrit values > 26% decrease acute kidney injury. A carbon dioxide production VCO2 i > of 60 ml/min/m2 and DO2i/VCO2i < 5 are predictors of hyperlactatemia. The mixed venous oxygen saturation (SvO2) and the oxygen extraction rate (ERO2) are better predictors of transfusion during extracorporeal circulation than hemoglobin value. The majority of the bibliography refers to adult surgery, but the application of GDP to the pediatric perfusion is beginning. Conclusion: The improvement of “optimal” perfusion, considered the gold standard, towards goal directed perfusion is already in use. Many hospitals are incorporating online monitoring of the new perfusion parameters in order to apply a specific perfusion to each patient as well as his metabolic needs during extracorporeal circulation.

Abstract:
Purpose – The academic tradition of adding a reference section with references to cited and otherwise related academic material to an article provides a natural starting point for finding links to other publications. These links can then be published as linked data. Natural language processing technologies are available today that can perform the task of bibliographical reference extraction from text. Publishing references by the means of semantic web technologies is a prerequisite for a broader study and analysis of citations and thus can help to improve academic communication in a general sense. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines the overall workflow required to extract, analyze and semantically publish bibliographical references within an Institutional Repository with the help of open source software components. Findings – A publication infrastructure where references are available for software agents would enable additional benefits like citation analysis, e.g. the collection of citations of a known paper and the investigation of citation sentiment. The publication of reference information as demonstrated in this article is possible with existing semantic web technologies based on established ontologies and open source software components. Research limitations/implications – Only a limited number of metadata extraction programs have been considered for performance evaluation and reference extraction was tested for journal articles only, whereas Institutional Repositories usually do contain a large number of other material like monographs. Also, citation analysis is in an experimental state and citation sentiment is currently not published at all. For future work, the problem of distributing reference information between repositories is an important problem that needs to be tackled. Originality/value – Publishing reference information as linked data are new within the academic publishing domain.

Janari, Barbara. "From race to grace : the other J M Coetzee." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8020.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the notable features of JM Coetzee's work is the portrayal in his novels, particularly in his 1999 Booker Prize-winning novel, Disgrace, of worlds that often seem bleak and bereft of redemption. In this dissertation I will argue that there is a resonance in Coetzee's writing that goes beyond the political and historical and that adds another dimension to his work. The focus of my dissertation will be an attempt to account for this other 'dimension' within the broader socio-political-historical nexus that informs much of his work. I will argue that this other dimension represents an ongoing conccrn with the questions of redemption and salvation, particularly as they are manifested in his latcr works, Disgrace and Elizabeth Costello. These concerns, however, are not just a consequence of Coetzee's evolving thought. As I will show, they are present in his earlier texts as well. To this end, I will consider the ways in which the themes of redemption and salvation, in the specifically religious and Christian sense of these words, also resonate in In the Heart of the Country (1977) and Life and Times of Michael K (1983).

Rogers, Susan. "Art and Destruction : shared philosophies which shape the work of Iris Murdoch and A. S. Byatt." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8021.

Full text
Abstract:
The genesis of this thesis was the observation that water played a role in many Murdoch novels as did accounts of the wanton destruction of valuable possessions. Study of the works of AS Byatt revealed a similar interest in the human impulse to destroy and in the Byatt tetralogy published over a period of more than two decades fire is often the means of destruction. My academic training to date has taught me to attempt to account for such observations. I concluded that Murdoch's obsession with the imagery and activity of water and Byatt's with that of fire reflect their awareness that, despite the wide acceptance of the death of the idea of God, humans as individuals and in community still need a religious life - ritual, ceremony, nurture, blessing and a moral order to control the human impulse to destruction.

Schumann, Nina Veronika. "Two-piano performance : its classification, history, and challenges, with a compilation of a detailed catalogue of works." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8032.

Full text
Abstract:
Research into the art of duo piano playing has been severely neglected. Repertoire is generally incorporated into books on solo piano playing and is often omitted from chamber work listings. With the exception of one outdated, out-of-print book by Hans Moldenhauer, I no author has attempted to submit a recent repertoire listing or a complete examination of the complications of duo pianism. The growth in the number of duos and the increasing number of concerts devoted to their repertoire indicates a previously unmatched public interest in the genre. The aim of this thesis is to serve as a reference guide for educators and pianists, in understanding the classification problems of the duo piano genre and how it relates to other pianistic combinations, an examination of the history of two-piano works until 1950, a look at professional and artistic challenges of duo piano playing, and a catalogue of works written for the medium. Confusion exists about the meaning of the word duet. At issue is whether the genre refers to two pianists at one keyboard exclusively, or whether it incorporates two pianists at two keyboards. Various sources were consulted to show that no uniform definition is available. In this initial chapter background to the study is given, available literature is reviewed and research methodology is explained.

Abstract:
This study has set out to highlight and investigate the contributions, to the Afrikaans literature, by writers of ""Colour"", as marginalized writers, especially after 1990. It must be indicated that a special place in the thesis, chapter five, has been devoted to the female writer of ""Colour"", EKM Dido, and the invaluable contributions she has made to Afrikaans literature. This chapter deals exclusively with all Dido's novels to date, and includes detailed discussions and analysis of important issues and aspects in the said novels. The thesis has focused on various ""Coloured"" writers, both male and female, and their contributions. The fact that naming and terms denoted to and used for various racial groupings are such thorny in South African society, terminology used to refer to these writers of ""Colour"" in this thesis initially seemed to pose a problem, but motivating the use of certain terms, to highlight and not relegate to the margins, solved this problem I believe.

Claassen, Joel. "The role of a spatial-temporal deictic paradigm in literary analysis : an evaluation of Karel Schoeman's triptych "Stemme” ['Voices']." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8015.

Full text
Abstract:
Deixis has had a useful, yet fairly one-dimensional history in Linguistics. The core of traditional deixis is essentially the manner that the utterance reflects the spatial and temporal position of the narrator. The aim of this study has been to pursue a paradigmatic application of deixis to literature, much as Snyman (1983), Anker (1987) and Fludernik (1997) have utilised deixis as a stylistic tool in the analysis of poetry, short stories and shorter novels. What this dissertation proposes is that deixis could also be a viewed as a literary paradigm in the analysis of literary texts. The deictic paradigm can also be especially important, as a narrative structural principle, in the evaluation of literary texts where space and time causes particular difficulty. In order to develop deixis as a paradigm, a spatial and temporal deictic analysis, is emphasized.

Bennie, Marc. "Professionalism and teachers' response to computers in the classroom." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8056.

Full text
Abstract:
During the last twenty years, there have been telling changes in how teachers teach and schools are run. One major reason for this has been the growth of Information and Communication Technologies (lCT). A consequence of the growth of these technologies has been a change in the global economy, which has become increasingly interconnected and dictated by profits. Teachers have had to adapt to this new global landscape. The changes required have not been easy. This study sought to find out more about the implication of these changes in teachers professional lives. The key findings point to a change in the work that teachers do as a result of computer technology and increased attention to market related practices in schools. Teachers have also had to explore different approaches to teaching and learning . These changes have thrust teacher's professional identities into the limelight as the profession adapts to the prevailing circumstances.

Verwey, Adala Michelle Prévost. "Mute articulations representing the body when the self isn't what it used to be." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8028.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of my research is an exploration of the concept of the 'mute body. The mute body is the body which stages a certain inderminacy and distance from the viewer. It is a form of hiding, but also a form of play with narcissistic implications and perhaps even seductive intent. The mute body is a response to the fear of power and what power has done to bodies in history. Conversely, it is also the location of power - the exercising of the choice to remain silent is a wilful act of retention or withholding. The mute body is not the vacant body. It is the body of which we are unable to say with certainty whether it is unable to signify or unwilling to signify.

Koff, Rashida. "Tamarind - the Ethnic Minority Film and a way beyond." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8026.

Full text
Abstract:
Someone once told me: ""In order to write well, you have to write what you know"" - this piece of advice seems obvious and simple and yet - as it turned out, it was the most difficult piece of advice to process and follow. The reason: what I know was that I was a young, female, Cape Malay filmmaker. My experiences, has largely taken place within the Cape Malay community. Religious documentaries aside, I had never before seen any representation of myself, or may community on screen. The task I had set myself seemed impossible. I had researched Thirld world theory in cinema and the weight of expectation that I felt afterward seemed a burden too hard to carry. This was not because I was in unchartered territory, but because this path has been walked by many before me: African-American filmmakers; Non-resident Indian filmmakers; Pilipino-American filmmakers; Mexican-American filmmakers; Afro-Brazilian filmmakers; Asian-American filmmakers. The list goes on and on. The one common thread is that these people felt a need to provide another point of view other than the ones seen in mainstream film and television. Their films have been like voices for the token characters that we've seen in countless mainstream films.

Mandela, Tandile. "The revival and revitalization of musical bow practice in South Africa." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8031.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a formal study of musical bow revivals in South Africa, based on an assessment of the instruments' historical and current usage, and functions. This study is also the inevitable result of my responses to certain musical experiences during the past three years, and which generated in me a personal commitment to the practice of African cultural music, which I 'discovered' through studies with Dizu Plaatjies and other African music specialists, who also speak through this study. My growing interest drew me to musical bows, which have become my principal instruments for musical compositions, and also personal expression. The primary focus of the dissertation is current bow practice in the Eastern and Western Cape, and certain areas in KwaZulu Natal, and personal interaction with people who became my main informants and teachers.

Abstract:
This paper presents a study of bibliographical references cited in articles published by MathNet.Ru journals. Based on data obtained from mathematical portal Math-Net.Ru, we built a journals citation graph, with its vertices denoting journals, and edges representing bibliographical references (citations) between papers published in these journals. To increase the reliability of the constructed graph, we chose a 2010-2021 citation time interval, when distribution of citing papers (papers that have cited other works) had stabilized at 3500-4500 citations per year. The structure of citation ageing is investigated; it is shown that the half-life of these citations is 8 years. So, the publication date of cited papers (papers that have been cited by other works) was limited to the year 2002. The constructed citation graph was found to have a small diameter and high density, indicating that there is a high level of research collaboration in Math-Net.Ru. It is shown that there is no Matthew effect as a pronounced advantage in the citations of leading journals in relation to less well-known ones. The adequacy of the Math-Net.Ru journal citation graph as a scientific collaboration model is confirmed by comparing the ranking of journals included the citation graph with their Science Index ranking in scientific electronic library eLIBRARY.RU. The two rankings were found to have a direct moderate relationship between themselves. A number of substantive conclusions are drawn from analysis of the citation graph.

Abstract:
A reverse bibliography, i.e. a list of referring publications – is a dynamically compiled list of works published after the publication in question and contained a reference to it. Leading publishers of scientific journals, as a rule, post lists of referring publications on the web pages of their articles. In Russia, the placement of lists of citing publications has not yet become the norm, but it is gradually becoming widespread. The reverse bibliography is extremely interesting to the reader since it allows you to find out in which direction the research presented in the original edition is developing. A traditional bibliography, i.e. an ordinary bibliographic list of references, can successfully exist both in a printed publication and online. In contrast, the list of referring publications is essentially an exclusively online, dynamic structure formed “on the fly” on the screen of an online reader. The list of referring publications always brings the reader a fresh current state of accumulated bibliographic data. Publications appearing on the Internet and indexed in bibliographic databases containing a link to the scientific work in question in their bibliography are reflected here almost immediately. The implementation of the list of referring publications in a number of characteristic projects is considered. The terminology used is discussed.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: A scoping review with specific reference to the context of Deaf populations, in relation to Deaf people’s experience of health and mental health services, including the use of a questionnaire regarding their experience as a patient, is needed in order to assess and synthesise the current knowledge. As this is an exploratory type of review drawing on qualitative as well as quantitative work, the PICo approach Population, (Phenomena of) Interest and Context, will guide the question formulation. Following the identification of the gap in the existing systematic reviews and scoping searches concerning patient experience and Deaf people’s experience of using healthcare services, the research question is as follows: “What are Deaf sign language users’ experiences as patients in healthcare services?”. Information sources: The bibliographic databases that will be searched for this review will includes PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Medline. Grey literature sources (e.g., policy, practice, and guideline documents), including contacting the relevant investigators working in the field of Deaf populations, will be searched for this review study. Forward citation sources, from the relevant reference lists, will also be searched to ensure the process is thorough.

Abstract:
Objective. To update findings from previous Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)- and American Urological Association (AUA) funded reviews evaluating therapies for clinically localized prostate cancer (CLPC). Sources. Bibliographic databases (2013–January 2020); ClinicalTrials.gov; systematic reviews Methods. Controlled studies of CLPC treatments with duration ≥5 years for mortality and metastases and ≥1 year for quality of life and harms. One investigator rated risk of bias (RoB), extracted data, and assessed certainty of evidence; a second checked accuracy. We analyzed English-language studies with low or medium RoB. We incorporated findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified in the prior reviews if new RCTs provided information on the same intervention comparison. Results. We identified 67 eligible references; 17 were unique RCTs. Among clinically rather than prostate specific antigen (PSA) detected CLPC, Watchful Waiting (WW) may increase mortality and metastases versus Radical Prostatectomy (RP) at 20+ years. Urinary and erectile dysfunction were lower with WW versus RP. WW’s effect on mortality may vary by tumor risk and age but not by race, health status, comorbidities, or PSA. Active Monitoring (AM) probably results in little to no difference in mortality in PSA detected CLPC versus RP or external beam radiation (EBR) plus Androgen Deprivation (AD) regardless of tumor risk. Metastases were slightly higher with AM. Harms were greater with RP than AM and mixed between EBR plus AD versus AM. 3D-conformal EBR and AD plus low-dose-rate brachytherapy (BT) provided a small reduction in all-cause mortality versus three dimensional conformal EBR and AD but little to no difference on metastases. EBR plus AD versus EBR alone may result in a small reduction in mortality and metastases in higher risk disease but may increase sexual harms. EBR plus neoadjuvant AD versus EBR plus concurrent AD may result in little to no difference in mortality and genitourinary toxicity. Conventionally fractionated EBR versus ultrahypofractionated EBR may result in little to no difference in mortality and metastases and urinary and bowel toxicity. Active Surveillance may result in fewer harms than photodynamic therapy and laparoscopic RP may result in more harms than robotic-assisted RP. Little information exists on other treatments. No studies assessed provider or hospital factors of RP comparative effectiveness. Conclusions. RP reduces mortality versus WW in clinically detected CLPC but causes more harms. Effectiveness may be limited to younger men or to those with intermediate risk disease and requires many years to occur. AM results in little to no mortality difference versus RP or EBR plus AD. EBR plus AD reduces mortality versus EBR alone in higher risk CLPC but may worsen sexual function. Adding low-dose-rate BT to 3D-conformal EBR and AD may reduce mortality in higher risk CLPC. RCTs in PSA-detected and MRI staged CLPC are needed.
